A new year has arrived. I wish you all peace and prosperity in 2011!
Thanks to everyone who made Susan and my holidays even brighter with
your generous gifts. A special “Thank you” also goes to Shirley Accardi
and her Christmas decorating committee for doing a wonderful job.
PICKLE BALL
I will be holding a Pickle Ball Demo Day to teach anyone interested in
how to play this fun sport. I will explain the rules and get you out on the
court so you can experience it for yourself. Sign up with Susan for this
complimentary clinic on Sat., Feb. 19th @ 9:30 am.
COURT REMINDER
Please use the tread blaster, brush, and/or tenni-two-step to wash the clay
from your shoes before entering the Pro Shop and locker rooms! It’s
especially important to remember to keep our restrooms and Fitness Center
free of clay! Dashing to the restroom during your match requires a pause
to wash your shoes off first.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
It’s not too late to enter the Palm Aire Club Championship. Sign up with
your partners or we will help you find one. This event is offered in classes
A,B, & C. Partners of different levels must enter the higher level. Last
year’s winners are required to play up one level. Please do not enter
unless your schedule is clear for all three days- Fri. afternoon, Sat. and
Sun. morning. If you lose in the first round, you will play a consolation
match. The Men’s and Women’s Doubles event runs Feb. 4th - Feb. 6th,
and the Mixed Doubles event runs Feb. 11th - Feb.13th. The cut off date
for entry is the Wed. before the event starts. All players must call Susan in
the pro shop the following day (Thur.) for their match schedule. The
entry fee is $5.00 per person. Fear not. Grab a partner and test your skills!
DINNER DANCE
Once again it’s time for the Tennis Association’s Annual Dinner Dance
on Sat., Feb. 26th. $31.25 ++, 6pm Cocktails, 7pm Dinner. This is our
biggest tennis event of the year. The food, music, and dancing are always
fabulous so don’t miss out. All club members and guests are welcome to
attend. Call the Pro Shop to reserve your table.
STROKE-OF-THE-DAY
I am offering two one-hour clinics both on Wednesday at 3:00pm. This
first one is Feb. 2nd on the “Return of Serve” and on March 2nd we’ll
tackle the dreaded “Backhand”. The cost is $10.00 per person per clinic.
A minimum of 4 people is required to run these clinics so sign up today.
Focused on Fitness
by Rebecca Campbell, CPT, RTS &
Sr. FIT, Fitness Nutritionist
(941)704-1273
The new year has started, which brings about desires
for change. Our minds may desire change
but the key tochange is action! Keep in mind, “if you don’t move
it you lose it!” This simply means, exercise has no age limit applied to
it. While studying for my Senior Fitness Certification there was a
quote that said, “Instead of people seeking doctors permission to participate
in an exercise program, they should seek permission not too!”
We need to move our bodies, they were meant for it, our lives depend
on it.
A great way to begin is determine what you notice that has
changed, and any problems you are having or experiencing. Not all
exercise needs to be done in the fitness club but there is so much one
can do there. The thing I have noticed in great numbers is balance and
strength in legs. Keep in mind when you sit, don’t just drop into the
chair, allow your muscles to contract and slowly lower you down.
When rising from a seated position restrain from pushing yourself up
with your arms. Once again let your leg muscles do it. As far as
balance, that changes on all people with age. There are so many reasons
for “loss in balance,” such as: a weak back, weak abdominal
muscles, weak leg muscles, weak gluteus muscles (buttocks), lack of
sleep and more. Many coming in are looking for exercises to help this
situation and my words to you would be to begin an all over fitness
program. Yes, there are exercises to hit that specific area, the core,
but all the muscles work to gather for stabilization of the body. Your
fitness program doesn’t have to be long just complete. I am available
to help answer your questions as well as set up a fitness program to
meet your needs.
Men’s 9-Hole Golf News
by Dr. Phil Warren
Our focus for this month is Dr. Mike Gable. Mike, well known
to our group, is the co-founder of the 9-holers and, with Fred
Faulkner, the tireless organizer of our weekly games. And, of
course, he is the innovator of the yardstick known as the “Gable”
which measures the length that a golf ball may be moved away
from a hazard or out of the rough. This measure is, of course,
still awaiting final approval by the P.G.A.
Mike was born and educated in New York City, receiving
his B.S. in 1947 and his doctorate in business in 1970 all
from NYU. He worked initially in sales for RCA before returning
to NYU for his Doctorate. He taught marketing at
Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania, where he worked
until retirement, achieving the rank of professor.
He co-authored a textbook, Retail Buying Practices
and Policies which is to be published in 2011. Notable is that
he authored this textbook during retirement.
Another notable achievement is that Mike is one of
eight professors listed in the Hall of Fame of the American
Collegiate Retailing Association, reflecting his mumerous publications
and presentations.
Mike and Ruth have been married 62 years, have 2
children and 3 grandchildren.
Report of Weekly Play
Our ranks are swelling with the expected return of snow
birds. We welcome Richard Anderson as a new member.
On Dec. 1, Drinks were hosted by Dave Lafferman in
honor of his many birthdays.
The annual 9-holer dinner was wonderful and enjoyed
by all.
REMINDER
Please ensure that you keep your cart on the cart paths
or roadways traveling to and from the club. Please
repair your ballmark and one other to help keep our
greens smooth and as nice as they are.

With every good there always seems to be an associated bad. I once won a closest to
the pin contest held on the baseball field of a Texas Rangers spring training game that
advertised a Cruise for two as first prize. After winning I envisioned cruising the
Mediterranean on the Queen Mary and it turned out to be a broken down gambling boat built
to hold 10 with 20 people stuffed on it with 3 slot machines and blackjack table. So we go through life
living and learning. But when it comes to new programs or making changes at a country club it’s very
challenging, especially if you make a mistake. It’s always easy to give, but difficult to take away and every
mistake seems to be magnified. This is why it takes time and many committee discussions before any
move is made and why the FREE RANGE BALL program had been tossed around for many, many years.
In 2011 this finally became a reality, but with good and bad. Hitting as many balls as you want is good;
having to wait to his is bad. Swinging as much as you want is good; finding grass because of all the divots
is bad. We all see the good, but the bad should be equally obvious. We need everyone’s help to make this
program a success by your awareness to the following: Space is minimal so please be courteous to those
waiting. Prior to Shotguns is a time for warm up and not the time to practice or fix your swing. Divot
takers, try to confine your practice to a small area. After a divot, the ball for your next shot should be a the
back end of the previous divot. This will dramatically save the quality of the turf. Although we have a
program to fill divots, we ask you use the green buckets of sand after hitting to fill any divots when you are
done. We appreciate your help.
With every good there always seems to be an associated bad. The greens are too slow; you can’t get
your ball to the hole. The greens are too fast; you just putted your ball off the green. We never seem to be
perfectly satisfied. I would have bet against the day when complaints would be about our greens being too
fast. A few thoughts which may help alleviate some anguish.
* Always try to leave the ball below the hole. Uphill putts are easier than downhill putts.
* The size of the hole is still the same regardless of green speed, 4.25 inches.
* Fast greens will always break more than slower greens.
* Most three putts occur because of poor pace of the first putt. Since the probability of making a 15
foot putt is less than 20%, focus your attention on pace instead of over thinking the break.
* Relax your shoulders and hands and trust your stroke. Tension causes inconsistent results.
We thank those of you who are using the website when requesting, booking and checking your tee
times. A large number of you are now utilizing the site as an information source and hopefully enjoying the
ease of use at the sames times.
The unusual ‘cold’ spells of recent months are finally behind
us - right? Of course a little chill in the air doesn’t deter the
diehards from layering up and hitting the course.
Our Breast Health Day was a huge success thanks to
the efforts of Chair, Barbara Robinson and her team of volunteers,
Marge Jones, Georgia Chapman, Mary LaRue, Ruth
Gable, Kathy Siegrist and Mollie Lafferman. Rita Probst
also did a great job on the poster. This was a joing NHWGA/
WGA effort. Breast Health of Sarasota, Inc. was the recipient
of $3,770. These funds benefit women of need and stay in our
community. Thank you to all that participated and a special
thank you to the WGA, the MGA, the 9-hole MGA and all of
the other groups and club members that contributed to this
event. The winner of the raffle for Spring Training Season
tickets for the Baltimore Orioles at the new Ed Smith Stadium
was Claude Nash.
February events include individual Low Putts; an
Interclub at University Park (Nancy Kovalchik is our interclub
chair); our Valentine Mixer with our honeys; and our Member/Guest
event on February 24.
March begins with a Business Meeting and Luncheon
on March 3 and Individual Tee to Green on March 10. Our
NHWGA Championship rounds take place on March 17 and
24 and the month concludes with Team Quota Points on 31st.
We are not lacking for events.
THE BREEZE
Art Association
by Donna Vasko
Our December and January events were quite varied.
Our speaker at the opening luncheon was Elizabeth Van
Riper who gave us a wonderful insight into the evolution
of an artist. A very talented lady, she convinced us
that we can be many different people in one lifetime.
Then we carpooled to Solomon’s Castle on a cold day
in December. Howard Solomon and his crew of docents
introduced us to his self-designed and self-built
castle with his fascinating artwork inside. He also built
a huge boat, surrouned by a moat in which he set up his
restaurant. As they say, “You have to be there!”
Many members of our association volunteered
to decorate the clubhouse for the holidays. We were
very proud of our efforts and then, before you knew it,
we were taking down all the decorations and packing it
away for next year. Thanks to all who gave of their
time and energy.
The member gallery is now presenting works by
the late Ruth Levin. Ruth was a founding member of
the association and our first president. Also included is
a sampling of her first class of watercolor students from
1989. The next member collection will be hung on
March 27th. If you wish to be a part of it, please contact
Donna Vasko at 358-5065
On February 21st we will attend a presentation
by famous watercolorist, Ann Abgott, at Keetons in
Bradenton, followed by a docent-led tour at ArtCenter
Manatee of the National Watercolor Society and Florida
Suncoast Watercolor Society Shows. A sign-up sheet is
on our bulletin board in the golf lobby.
On March 14th at 10 a.m. in the Lakes Room,
we will host Kevin Costello from the Ringling College
faculty. He will be showing and critiquing a movie of a
famous artist.
This highlight of our year follows on March 21st
through March 27th when we present our annual art
show in the clubhouse lobby. If you are an artist, we
hope you are getting your pieces ready to be received
on Monday, March 21st. You will receive entry forms
and information later. And, last but not least, our Gala
is on March 26th. A wonderful dinner dance with live
music and fun for all, it is an event you will not want to
miss. Guests are more than welcome.
Computer Stuff
Stu Samet
webhelp@palmaire.net
From now on, each issue of the Breeze will contain an article relating to computer topics such as Internet
(both Palm-Aire and non Palm-Aire), maintaining your computer, keeping it safe, the best programs and
applications....most anything you want to know about computers.
The column name was chosen to assure you and me that the articles will not be highly technical or scary. I
will be creating (and legally stealing) articles that apply to topics that YOU tell me you want to learn about.
HOW TO TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT
1.) The Club has established a help email address, webhelp@palmaire.net, that is primarily for getting help with our internet site,
but you can also use it to inform me of what computer topics you would like more information on.
2.) There is a table in the hall between the lobby and the locker rooms where you will find Help/training request forms. You can
complete one of the forms and leave it with the receptionist.
3.) We will be conducting follow-up internet help sessions in and around the clubhouse and you can address your thoughts to any of
the training cadre who will be recognized by their propeller beanies.
4.) You can go to the directory on our website and get my phone number in the listing for Stu Samet.
We are also arranging, if interest exists, a Computer/Technology Lecture given by an officer of the Sarasota PC User group
which will provide a broad brush sample of what you can do with your computers (in addition to emailing your grandkids.) It will
probably be scheduled for a Wednesday afternoon in late February or early March. This may be a one time event or a series if
interest exists. Meantime, you can learn about the Sarasota PC Users Group at the website www.SPCUG.org. You will be receiving
an eblast from the club with details but please use the webhelp@palmaire.net to let me know if you are interested.
The cold weather is here. The golf course is off color, this is due to the drop in both air and soil
temperature. Soil temperature is more critical. Since warm season grasses go into dormancy i.e. stop
actively growing when soil temperature is 55F or lower.
The greens are in relatively good condition. They have good density, color and smoothness. This can be
attributed to a weekly foliar fertility program, properly maintained cutting units and conscientious operators.
We have started doing some tree pruning and cleaning of the palmetto palms. We will start edging of the
bunkers and re-work the sand to create a more favorable lie.
Please remember to repair your ball marks on the greens and fill your divots.
Tell me something good!!!
If you have spent any time around me you may have heard me say this a time or two...There are so many
great things about Palm Aire. I always prefer to focus on the positives...Palm Aire Pride.
We have a lot to be proud of at Palm Aire. Whenever there is a worthy cause our membership and
staff stand tall and give from the heart. Witness the recent food, toy and clothing drives, Rally for a Cure,
Breast Health Day, Arnies Army, Blood Drives to name a few. How about how this club rallied to support
Steve Yates during his health struggle. Pride with a capital “P”.
How about our golf courses, tennis program, excellent food and beverage programs and dedicated
staff PRIDE. The continued support our members have shown by chosing to make the club their first
choice for spending their discretionary dollars on recreation and dining PRIDE.
I urge you all to take all this good and share it with your friends and neighbors....Show your PRIDE
and urge them to come and be a part of it. One prospect each is all we need with Summer Membership
right around the corner. See you at the Club.
President’s Report 2010
Jim Lehmann
President
Trish Richards, Banquets & Catering
trichards@palmaire.net
As a business your Club’s 2010 year remained within a very challenging environment. The
overall national economy, and Florida’s economic environment continued in recessionary mode,
and has affected all area Country Clubs. We have been keenly aware of this and have attempted to meet
this challenge “Head On,” as follows.
First - Membership! Your Membership Committee developed and recommended to the Board several additional
new initiatives on top of last year’s start of going beyond and outside the traditional approaches and have achieved
several successes in doing so. The initiatives addressed both the acquiring of new members and the retention of existing
members and has attempted to motivate our membership to be involved as well.
Financial Performance - Our operating financial perfomance is crucial in keeping us competitive in our Dues
& Fees structure, and in assuring the long term future of the Club. Despite the loss of revenue associated with the net
loss of 60 equity members in 2010, we have concluded the year virtually achieving our budgeted breakeven goal. We
are pleased with this performance overall and a great deal of credit must go to our management team. That performance
was accomplished with a mixture of some disappointments but a greater number of successes as we tried several new
revenue producing ideas, and further cost reduction efforts in a number of areas. We achieved a positive operating cash
flow. Also of note is the Food-Beverage performance, wihich is a VITAL part of the Club’s “Social Fiber,” with so
much being experienced by our members in sharing friendships and camaraderie in a frindly atmosphere. We had a
great year with many programs and events and financially achieved what we believe was the best year in the Club’s
“F & B” history thus validating our decision the last two years to retain full control and management of such.
Capital Reserves & Capital Expenditures - Our overall Capital Reserves stands at $621,886 at year end,
which is better than our projected expectation, and compares to $662,410 last year. We made a conscious decision to
scrutinize our Capital Expenditure outlays carefully and to utilize leasing when it made sense to do so. 2010’s total
Capital Expenditures were $202,000 vs. a budget of $225,000 and a prior year outlaty of $244,000. Of this total,
$107,000 was invested in upgrading our bunkers on both courses. That, combined with concentrated operating expense
efforts to improve our greens and deliver general improvements in all other aspects of the courses, has yielded positive
comments from both members and visitors. That was precisely our goal when making a decision in the Spring of the
year to make our courses the best ever. We believe our Golf Course Maintenance Facilities, Kitchen Facilities-Equipment,
and Clubhouse Buildings remain in good condition.
General - We continued our efforts to communicate with our members with two Town Hall meetings, articles
in the Breeze, regular and email communications, and continual ongoing responses to members’ letters or questions.
Many thanks to members who have volunteered their time and talents and “Sweat Equity” to the STANDARD and AD
HOC committees which contributed in a positive way to a successful year.
While there are some small postive indicators that the economy may be at the bottom and we can begin an
