Our very own Shul will be the epicenter of a special
celebration of the world-renowned architect, Eric
Mendelsohn, and one of his crowning jewels - Park
Synagogue Main. The event will include a delicious
brunch and tour just for Park members and guests,
as well as public events. Explore our history and learn
the fascinating symbolism behind the design choices
Mendelsohn made 65 years ago. Watch the awardwinning
new documentary about Eric Mendelsohn,
"Incessant Visions," and meet its director Duki Dror. And
don't miss viewing the recently discovered original
Mendelsohn sketches of Park Synagogue Main!

This event is held in partnership with the Jewish
Federation's Cleveland Israel Arts Connection and
Case Western Reserve University. We're thrilled to host
Duki Dror and show his film in a Mendelsohn building.

Teaching fulfills the mitzvah, which can be found in
Deuteronomy (6:7) and is part of our Shema prayer,
“V’Shinantam L’Vanecha.” This phrase translated, “And you
shall teach them diligently” is one of our most recognized
values of our Jewish faith. Our teachers have the awesome
responsibility of teaching Jewish knowledge and traditions
to the next generation. Recently, Renee Schonhiutt, a
member of our educational staff, received the very first
award for Special Needs from the Jewish Education Center of
Cleveland.
We are fortunate that Park Synagogue has a faculty filled
with people who dedicate themselves to learning and
teaching our children. Parents of children in our religious
school have the opportunity to honor their child’s
outstanding teachers by nominating them for the Libbie
Braverman Award. This award recognizes teachers who have
demonstrated dedication and devotion to teaching. We
encourage you to nominate one of our fine teachers. For a

50/50:
On 50 Years in the
Rabbinate
June 4, 1963 – I can still feel the hands
of Dr. Nelson Glueck on my shoulders,
on the bimah of Temple Emanuel in
New York, granting me “smichah.”
I almost levitated as he told me that I was now a Rabbi in
Israel, a teacher, a guide in Torah, a commentator on the
laws, values and ethics of Judaism. I had spent six years at
the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Jewish Institute of
Religion in New York preparing for this most meaningful and
inspiring moment.
Fifty years have passed since I stood with my six fellow
ordainees facing the sacred ark on the bimah at Temple
Emanuel. My first pulpit was Temple Beth Shalom in
Colorado Springs, CO. It was fortuitous that in late 1963 I
received my first assignment from the Commission on Jewish
Chaplaincy as military chaplain at Fort Carson.
Fifty years have gone by as a Rabbi like a moment in
eternity. I have conducted services, counseled troubled
souls, taught Torah, given eulogies, married those in love,
impressed on congregants the need for ethical behavior,
and molded young military men and women into religiously
observant and practicing Jews.
What a wonderful and meaningful life I have had being God’s
partner in spreading and teaching His word in towns and
cities, and on many ships and naval installations. It has been
my great privilege to serve the Lord and my country. I have
worn the Rabbinical robe and the naval officer’s uniform in
carrying out the mandates of Judaism.
It has been my great pleasure and honor to serve on the
Park Synagogue staff and to be a faithful and participating
member of the Park minyan. May God grant me a few more
years of life as an active retired Rabbi to still serve my people
and my God as well as I can. Amen.
Rabbi Frankel was recently awarded the Honorary Life
Membership from the Central Conference of American Rabbis for
his achievement of 50 years in the Rabbinate. He is also a guest
columnist for the Plain Dealer. Rabbi Frankel has been part of
the Park community for 10 years, and is an active participant in
minyan, Mizvah Day and other congregational events.

Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle
Distribution Program
Sunday, March 3 • 9:30 am • Park Synagogue East
Once again, the Park Synagogue Men’s Club is organizing the
Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle program, in which they package
and deliver yellow candles to Park Synagogue families in
our community. Throughout North America, families light
one Yellow Candle the night of Sunday, April 7, Erev Yom
HaShoah, in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
Thank you to those who have donated their time and money
to this important program in previous years.
They need many volunteers to deliver candles to
approximately 30 households each. This can be a fun activity
with the kids or grandkids. Your help is much appreciated. If

Greater Cleveland
Congregations Update
Medicaid Expansion: The GCC is strongly lobbying our
state politicians to support Medicaid Expansion in Ohio
(Affordable Care Act, a.k.a Obamacare). There was a meeting
on January 24 at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church where
close to 1,000 people from the Cleveland area showed their
support for Medicaid Expansion and urged our legislators to
support it. GCC is the convener of 27 organizations in our
community who support this effort.
Education: The GCC is monitoring the Cleveland Metropolitan
School District's promise to responsibly spend the school
levy money to improve education.
Criminal Justice: Now that Tim McGinty, the new Cuyahoga
County Prosecutor is in office, we are holding him
accountable for the promises he made to the GCC to improve
how the justice system works for its citizens. We need
people to follow up on letting the community know how
the collateral sanctions bill will affect people re-entering the
community after incarceration.
There is also a group working to see if the GCC should take
up the issue of gun violence reduction, and what, specifically,
should be done.
We need more Park members involved in the Greater
Cleveland Congregations and its important work! To

to others by making and delivering shaloch manot, gifts of
Purim treats. Come with your children or grandchildren to
help decorate, pack and deliver Purim Shaloch Manot bags
to Park members who reside in area nursing homes and
senior facilities to brighten their day. All children must be
accompanied by a parent or other adult to participate.

Bag Lunch for the Homeless
Mitzvah Project
Sunday, February 17 • 10:00 – 11:00 am
Park Synagogue East
Help make 200 brown bag lunches for the homeless. All
adult members and elementary-age children and older are
invited to volunteer! Children must be accompanied by a
parent or grandparent. Community service hours for
students are available.
Participants will be asked to donate kosher food needed
to make the lunches (list sent with RSVP) or monetary
donations to purchase these items. We are also collecting
and packing travel-size personal care items this year.
Please bring new, unopened bottles of shampoo, lotion,
conditioner, mouthwash, etc.
Even if you can’t volunteer, we welcome food and
monetary donations. Please note: All food donations
must be kosher and unopened.
RSVP’s are required by February 8th. Please contact

Comet Fund Helps Make
Chanukah Special for Park’s
College Students
Thanks to the Faye and Sol Comet Chanukah Fund,
this year 20 of Park’s college students, who are freshmen
or new to the College Outreach list, received a beautiful
personalized brass menorah to use while in college and after.
They, and the other 60 students whose parents signed them
up for the Park College Outreach program, were mailed
Chanukah care packages complete with Chanukah candles,
chocolate gelt, a dreidel, goodies, and a Chanukah guide
with the Chanukah story and meaning, candle blessings,
and instructions for playing the dreidel game. Thanks to
Park’s College Outreach Committee co-chairs, Charlene
Chelnick and Karen Rukin, and the other parent volunteers
who helped shop for the contents, pack, and seal the boxes:
Leonid Baron, Robin Benis, Stacey Berebitsky, Carol
Collins, Danene Legarth, and Patty Rubin.
After receiving her Chanukah care package, freshman
Lauren Lipsyc sent the following thank you note:

New Fund Established
The mitzvah of tzedakah lives on through generous
donations made in honor of our members’ special causes.
Trust funds are used for specific purposes, overseen by the
Rabbis and staff. Funds have been used to coordinate special
programming for children, host guest speakers, subsidize
event costs, and provide the “icing on the cake” for many of
our programs. The Myron & Rose Glass Chanukah Fund
and the Myron & Rose Glass Educational Endowment
Fund have the renown of being our oldest funds – since
1940 – providing the gift of Chanukah candles to our
congregants, as well as enhancing religious and educational
programming.
We pleased to announce our newest fund, the Sanford
Juntoff Religious & Education Fund. Sandy Juntoff, who
passed away last June, was a much beloved member of
Park. He was a teacher to adults and children, a minyanaire,
a leader of services, a volunteer, and spent much of his
life in service to our congregation. The fund in his name
will enrich and deepen selected religious and educational
programming.
If you are interested in donating to the Juntoff fund,
establishing a new fund, or have questions regarding
supporting Park Synagogue, please contact Development

Bereavement Support Group
Park Synagogue is sponsoring a Bereavement Support Group
which will meet for six Thursdays – from February 7 through
March 14. Time is 7:00 - 8:30 pm at Park Synagogue East.
Ieda Warshay, LISW, will facilitate the group. Group members
will also find support, strength, and hope from each other.
The Park Synagogue Bereavement Support Group is free

families facing the challenges of raising young children.
Our presenter, Randi B. Wolfe, has more than 35 years of
experience as a leader and trainer in early childhood, family
support, parenting education and teacher preparation.
She offers both theoretical and practical understanding of
children and families, having taught preschool, directed a
childcare center and developed and directed a communitybased
family support center.
This evening is free and open to the community -
