Large Holz-Her edgebander installed
at David Urquhart Joinery
The heavy duty Holz-Her
edgebander, Arcus 1336
with patented ‘Glu Jet System’.
DAVID Urquhart Joinery of Portsoy,
Banff, has recently invested
in a large, high spec Holz-Her
Arcus 1336 Premium edgebander.
It is a heavy duty and
exceptionally stable and precise
machine returning near zero
setup times and glue lines, ideal
for the high class panel and joinery
products it manufactures.
David Urquhart has always believed
in moving his company forward
by using the latest new
generation technology available.
Prior to this investment, the company
installed the Weinig Powermat
500 planer moulder, the OptiCut S50 cross-cut saw and before that, the
Profimat 23 — all high precision German engineered machines. The Holz-Her company
is part of the Weinig Group, and the technical backup service to customers is
the same — guaranteed service Weinig is renowned for, on its moulders and tool
room equipment.
Well known and highly reputed in the woodworking industry for quality joinery,
David Urquhart mainly supplies products to builders’ merchants, building contractors
and individual customers. By using the latest CNC machines, it is able to deliver
bespoke, solid wood joinery, to the highest quality standards, quickly, and at
highly competitive prices, without increasing staffing numbers. Flexible production
and meeting delivery promises is the key to the company’s success.
The company has now expanded into the panel market. Says David Urquhart, “I
wanted to penetrate the top quality end of the market, so I researched the panel
machine manu facturers that offered reliable heavy duty edgebanders, incorporating
the most advanced new panel technology, with a proven and dependable
backup service. Holz-Her met all my detailed needs and, as part of the Weinig
Group, I feel secure with their training and prompt service from past experience of
Weinig UK. With this new addition, it will complement our door set production for
bespoke solid core and the laminated faced doors. We have found the Holz-Her
very user friendly with the setup times and change over for different products all
done from the screen taking away operator error in the set up.”
The Arcus 1336 Premium offers precise and rapid setup facilitated by servo
motors orchestrated by the machine’s touch screen controller. A key advantage of
William Urquhart (‘Wullie’ to his friends), production manager of David
Urquhart Joinery setting the Holz-Her edgebander.
David Urquhart, managing director of David Urquhart
Joinery of Portsoy, Banff, manufacturers of high class
panel and joinery products.
Holz-Her edgebanders is its patented ‘Glu Jet System’. It allows
the use of granulates or cartridges, with a choice of capacity of
330 g to 2 kg. Its thin film technology produce ‘invisible joints’,
giving an impressive quality finish. This feature is so reliable, it
carries a three-year guarantee as standard.
The benefits to manufacturers are countless: three-minute
heat up time, saving time and money; no loss of glue power,
saving hassle of re-edging; colour can be changed within three
minutes; EVA or PUR glue can be used; no need for a nitrogen
tank for PUR clean down taking up four minutes; near zero glue
line; no discolouration; and it uses a third less power.
All types of edging can be used — solid wood lipping,
veneer, ABS, PVC, melamine or acrylic.
David Urquhart is a good example of combining experienced
craftsmanship with new technology, to continue its
steady growth in the supply of high quality bespoke joinery
and panel products.
Valuable time saver
STUART Groves Furniture of
High Wycombe has been making
bespoke furniture and “anything
anybody wants in wood”
for the past 20 years or more.
Recently, owner Stuart Groves
invested in a refurbished gluesetter
purchased from Alan
Lamont.
Stuart’s relationship with Alan
goes back five years, when his existing
gluesetter was in need of repair.
He went first of all to the
company he had purchased it
from, but was told that it was no
longer trading as the owner had
died. Following up on a personal
recommendation, he contacted
Alan Lamont, and this was the beginning
of a long-term business
relationship.
Alan had repaired the previous
gluesetter on several occasions,
and Stuart says: “He is the chap I always
turn to for advice on them. I
trust him to give me impartial advice.
The glue welder I had before
was not one he had supplied, but
he gave me honest advice regarding
it.” So when the time came that
Alan advised Stuart that parts for
his existing gluesetter were no
longer readily available, and that it
might cost more to repair in the future
than it was actually worth,
Stuart was more than happy for
Alan to bring down some refurbished
gluesetters from Scotland
for him to have a look at. From
these, he selected one to purchase.
Stuart says, “Alan is not a chap
to give a hard sell. If I had chosen
to carry on with the old one, he
would have continued to do the
repairs. And from those he
brought with him to the demonstration,
I could have had a
cheaper machine if I had wished.”
The gluesetter is a valuable
time saver in Stuart’s workshop. “It
is quick to set the glue off and it’s
simple to operate. It does a good
job. You don’t have to wait for ages
for the glue to go off and stack
cramped pieces all around the
workshop: you can just cramp it,
zap it, lift it up and put it in a stack.”
It is known in the workshop as
‘Frank’ after Frank Zappa …
Stuart says that it is used for a
wide variety of projects: “Anywhere
we need to set off glue
quickly: cramping up joints, lippings
and doors, etc, so we can
reuse the cramps. In fact, we are
just getting an air cramp to really
take advantage of it.”
Asked if he would recommend
the product, Stuart replied, “Yes,
and I would recommend Alan as
well. He is such a good chap: you
can ring him any time for advice
and he will do his best to help you.
He will put himself out to come
down and demonstrate the machine.
You are still under no obligation
(apart from a moral
obligation, as he has come down
all the way from Scotland!). He is
knowledgeable and, if you have a
problem, he will do his damnedest
to sort it out.”
Completing 25 years’ service with Weinig
WEINIG’S service engineer, Edward Lucas, has
completed 25 years’ service with Weinig UK.
Edward is married to Jane, with a son, Adam,
and daughter, Laura. He started as a toolmaker
and before joining Weinig he worked at Bowater
Rippers, window and kitchen manufacturers.
At Weinig, he has serviced and installed
every model of moulder — stand alone and
countless high speed lines, Finn Forest being
the most challenging.
“My work at Weinig has been enjoyable,
interesting and sometimes, exciting,” said
Edward. “My hotel was once blown up; I’ve
been threatened at gunpoint in Iran; eaten dog
in Korea; and still survived to tell the tale. I’ve
been fortunate to have had such a supportive
wife and family to enable me to enjoy my
work.”
Weinig has always given service backup its
highest priority and has built an enviable reputation
worldwide for itself.
The company believes that service is the
lifeblood of woodworking manufacturers —
everything flows from it.
Customer service in Weinig is not just a ‘department’
— it is an ‘attitude’. It guarantees
prompt service cover on its whole range of solid
wood processing machinery — its speciality.
There are now three people in the service
department with 25 year awards and two others will be announced by
the end of the year — making a very experienced team.
AXYZ routers in demand
IN SPITE of arguably the most
damaging and prolonged economic
downturn in living memory,
AXYZ International has
reported a much higher than
was expected demand for its
high performance CNC routing,
engraving and cutting systems.
This has been especially evident
in furniture production, industrial
woodworking, joinery and
panel processing industries.
Much favoured by these industries
are the AXYZ 6000 and in particular
the 4000 series of
machines. These offer a host of
both standard and optional production
enhancements and have
been shown to greatly assist
owners of these routers by way of
faster throughput, higher volumes
and commensurate profitability
during what have been difficult
trading conditions.
In charge of production at
Cardiff Theatrical Services, Darren
Joyce commented: “We chose the
AXYZ 4010 router because it
ticked all the boxes in our ‘must
have’ list of machining requirements.
We use the router to cut
out components for scenery and
stage constructions involving
everything from formers for
Edward Lucas (centre), who has just completed 25 years’ service with Weinig UK. Shaun
Crump (left) and Chris Gasson (right) are the other two in the Service Department with
25 year awards.
wooden boxes to complex shapes
fixed to timber or steel frames.”
At Wood & Wood International
Signs, the 4010 router was purchased
to supplement the 6010
machine already installed. Procurement
manager, Gary Adams,
commented: “The 4010 router has
run continuously for 10 hours a
day, six days a week without any
problems or maintenance requirements.
The machine was an excellent
choice. It is easy to use and
totally reliable and is supported by
the on-site training and ongoing
technical back-up provided by
AXYZ International, both of which
were outstanding.”
Interior design specialist Stringer
installed a 4008 router to process
components used in, amongst
others, the point-of-sale displays
and office workplace systems it
manufactures for multiple retail
and office/studio environments, including
blue chip companies such
as the John Lewis Partnership.
Founder and principal designer,
Dick Stringer, commented: “Installation
of the 4008 router has enabled
a total production capability
to be introduced, with fast and reliable
processing of a wide range of
both solid and composite woods.”
Two models of the same router
have been installed at Leedsbased
Sound Leisure. Chief development
engineer, Phil Patterson,
commented: “The accuracy and
versatility of the routers and the
speed of production provided
means we can deliver our specialist
products to key customers
within a time frame of days and
even hours rather than weeks
when we used conventional
methods of production.”
At Dorset-based Minster Joinery
an AXYZ 4004 router is used to
create architecturally sensitive
wood-based constructions such as
an elegant staircase installed at a
Grade 1 Arts & Crafts building in
London. Founder and managing
director Martin Stones commented:
“The router is used for a
wide range of disparate applications
including, for example, cut
out formers required for curved or
shaped veneer work and inlaid veneers
of wood and metal featuring
silver and mother of pearl as well
as more general machining requirements
such as hinge sinking,
shelf holes and any repetitive
component requirement.”
All AXYZ routers offer a raft of
both standard and optional production
tool enhancements, including
an enlarged 21-station
Automatic Tool Change facility.
SCM’s Open House attracts many visitors
THE LATEST Open House was for
SCM Group UK’s Distributors to
meet and demonstrate to their
customers a number of new machines
being shown in the UK
for the first time, including CNC
machining centres models
Pratix S15B and Tech Z5-31, new
edgebanders K230 and K400,
wide belt sanders Sandya 9RCS
and 300RCS plus classical woodworking
machines from the SCM
and Minimax ranges.
SCM’s manager responsible for
distributors, Roger Gabb, comments:
“We were very pleased
with the number of customers visiting
our Open House and this was
mainly due to our distributors’
own promotional activity. Of main
interest were the CNC machining
centres, edgebanders, a beam
saw, wide belt sanders and planer
moulders as well as the range of
classical machines. We have received
quite a few enquiries for
the new Pratix S15B in particular
and I’m sure we’ll have some orders
in the next week or so. Blyth
Woodworking Machinery took an
order for a Pratix S22-31 ‘Jumbo
Sheet’ CNC at the show.”
The five-axis Tech Z5-31 CNC
machining centre also produced
many enquiries and demonstrations,
in particular sizing and machining
a heavy duty solid wood
door proved of great interest. High
performance is guaranteed due to
new ‘photobumpers’ safety protections
(SCM patented solution)
and the electrical cabinet is
mounted in the machine base saving
valuable factory floor space.
Maximum operator convenience
and flexibility of use is due
to the Prisma 5 5-axis routing head
that allows easy operation in reduced
spaces without the risk of
collisions. There are no limits to
the possible uses of this versatile
group which, with the patented
SCM solution, ensures the overall
dimensions in each direction of
travel are kept to a minimum.
Another machine of great interest
was SCM’s model K230 EVO
single-sided edgebander as it is
very easy to use and comes with
all inclusive and necessary equipment
provided, due to its advanced
technological solutions
designed to ensure optimal panel
finishing. It is considered the perfect
edgebander for companies
setting up and requiring professional
edgebanding solutions immediately
after purchase.
Many advantages include cutting
and radius of the edgebanding
with a two-motor end cutting
unit, for the best quality finishing
of panels even with thick solid
wood lippings with a straight cut
or chamfering with thin edgebandings.
The best quality finish of
the edge is due to the ‘Megaline’
feed belt (an SCM patent) which
allows the panel feed without the
typical pulse generated by the
pinion of a traditional feed track.
“In all we were very pleased
with the quality of the enquiries
we received from all the customers
who attended our Open
House,” commented Roger Gabb.
“We and our distributors are now
busy chasing up all the new leads
and we are very optimistic several
orders will result in the near future
in addition to those taken during
the show.”
Recycling wood waste creates marketing benefits
AN EXHIBITION company in Coventry has purchased a wood waste
heater from Wood Waste Technology to reduce its carbon footprint
whilst saving money on waste disposal
and heating bills.
Established 22 years ago, exhibition contractors
Exmedia specialise in building and
installing conference and exhibition displays
and stands for clients around the globe.
After making a decision to relocate Exmedia’s
production facility in autumn 2010,
managing director, Peter Gibson, was keen
to improve the company’s environmental
performance as part of the move, and researched
the possibility of installing a wood
burning heater in the new premises.
An associate recommended Wood Waste
Technology. The team at Exmedia liked the
fact that the heaters produced by Wood
Waste Technology did not need an oil or gas
afterburner, making them very economical
to run compared to some of the other
heaters on the market.
A WT15 heater was installed in October
2010 by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced
engineers, just before Exmedia
moved into its new 28,000 ft 2 premises.
Peter Gibson says, “We are delighted with the heater we purchased
from Wood Waste Technology. We have had a great return on our investment,
as the payback period was around 12 months. We have drastically
reduced the amount of wood waste we send to landfill, and our running
and maintenance costs are now at an all-time low from saving money on
waste and heating bills. We are also finding that our reduced carbon footprint
and enhanced environmental credentials are proving to be a valuable
asset in our marketing strategy.”
Managing director of Wood Waste Technology,
Kurt Cockroft, says, “Most companies
only see the financial benefits of reduced
heating and waste disposal bills when buying
a wood waste burner — but there are
other advantages, too. Forward thinking
clients like Exmedia understand how green
credentials can help with marketing a business,
giving an advantageous point of difference
over what the competition is
offering.”
Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise
in wood waste solutions have helped
many companies reduce their waste disposal
and heating costs. As well as offering
site survey, design, manufacture, installation
and on-going maintenance for new units,
the company also services all types of wood
waste heaters and supplies genuine spares
up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers.
In addition, Wood Waste Technology is
the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau
GmbH, a German manufacturer of
dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available
in various sizes and specifications to suit all business applications.
Felder-Group In House Show 19th & 20th July
2013 WILL BE another year of massive growth at the
Felder-Group. Despite stagnation in the economy over
the past few years, with investment in the factory, new
production techniques, products and machines, Felder
has continued to go from strength to strength.
At the annual January New Year’s Meeting, Mr Hansjörg
Felder announced the start of a wave of new products that
were to be launched in 2013. The first release of products
included the newly designed range of 900 series and Format-4
planer thicknessers.
In autumn 2012 the new Felder D963 was presented, with
630 mm thicknessing width and a wealth of high quality
standard specifications including power drive adjustment.
Then in January this was followed up with the launch of the
new A951, AD951, Dual 51 and Plan 51. A simplified design
for the lifting of the planing tables and a more solid machine
chassis are two of the immediate improvements that strike
Mirka donates tickets
at first glance. Numerous changes have been made to the machines and
SOFTWARE FOR DESIGNERS & MANUFACTURERS
Joinerysoft’s CE Marking Workshop a great success
OVER 150 ATTENDEES from
throughout the UK joined
Joinerysoft to learn about the
company’s complete solution
for CE marking.
Joinery manufacturers travelled
from Northern Ireland, Norfolk,
Sussex, Scotland, Kent and
Northumberland, to name just a
few, to attend the two hour workshops
held in the morning and
afternoon of Thursday 13th June
2013. Utilising the superb conference
facilities at NFU headquarters
in Stratford upon Avon, the auditorium
provided tiered seating for
up to 100 attendees at a time.
During the workshop Joinery -
soft’s managing director, Alan
Turner, demonstrated how to set
up the JMS factory production
control system and explained the
intricacies of when to CE mark and
when not to. Representatives from
BWF, Leitz Tooling UK, Felder,
Coastal, Mighton Products and
Timbmet also exhibited and networked
with delegates during session
breaks.
The design, quoting and manufacturing
software which has for
the past two years lead the way
with u-value compliance with
building regulations part L has
now been upgraded to include a
factory production control system,
declaration of performance certificates
and printing of CE labels. The
latest CE marking update from
Joinerysoft is also a free release to
all customers who subscribe to
Joinerysoft’s support and maintenance
contract.
Andrew Gray, Brookeswood Ltd,
who uses the JMS software for
quoting and manufacturing, says:
“We had previously received information
on CE marking from a
number of different sources but
the Joinerysoft workshop provided
the most comprehensive explanation
so far and filled in the
final pieces of the jigsaw. The full
implication of CE marking became
apparent and enabled us to go
back and re-look at our preparation.
There were some areas of the
legislation that we hadn’t quite interpreted
correctly and following
the workshop we are able to fine
tune our systems before the 1st
July deadline. I certainly wouldn’t
have missed the workshop.”
Managing director, Alan Turner,
explained, “Joinerysoft has been in
close discussions with several UK
notified bodies responsible for enforcing
the new CE marking legislation
to ensure that our software
contains everything necessary for
joinery companies to comply.”
Taking its responsibility seriously
to provide a total solution,
Joinerysoft has negotiated
with printer manufacturer
TSC Bar Code
Solutions to provide CE
label printers at a reduced
price for Joinerysoft
customers. The
queues of customers attending
the workshop
who patiently waited to
collect advance orders of
CE label printers showed
the level of commitment
to ensuring that they
would be ready for the
legislation start date on
1st July. As what is believed
to be the largest
supplier of software to
the timber joinery industry
in the UK, Joinerysoft
has been able to negotiate
reduced rates for labels for CE
marking too.
John Berry, Joinerysoft’s support
manager, was on hand at the workshops
to ensure that the joiners attending
had a thorough understanding
of the software to enable
them to set up their systems before
the 1st July deadline. John added,
“Customers were amazed at how
informative the workshop was and
how much JMS does for them.
There was an outstanding positive
response to what joiners saw and
acceptance of the need to embrace
this new regulation.”
Due to demand for the CE
marking workshop Joinerysoft has
released a second date for another
CE marking workshop on Monday
15th July 2013 at the same venue
in Stratford upon Avon. To book a
place visit Joinerysoft’s online
booking as soon as possible as
places are limited.
Comments after the workshop
included a response from Glyn Burgreave,
The Cabinet Makers: “Thank
you to the Joinerysoft team for providing
the CE workshop, you have
obviously put a lot of work in here
and continue to do so.”
SOFTWARE FOR DESIGNERS & MANUFACTURERS
Cabinet Vision vital for one-off specialist
A MANUFACTURER of handmade
bespoke furniture says
the right software is vital to
maintain its reputation. Oakleigh
Cabinets has been working
with Cabinet Vision for
about 15 years and always embraces
the updates in each new
release.
“We don’t offer a standard product
range,” says owner, Maurice
Leigh. “Customers come to us because
they want something different;
a one-off.” The family-run
business operates with 14 employees
out of 9,800 ft 2 premises
just South of Manchester, supplying
bespoke kitchens, utility
rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms,
studies and family rooms.
Customers include kitchen and
bathroom showrooms, interior designers,
housebuilders such as
Bellway Homes, and the public.
Oakleigh now uses Cabinet Vision’s
flagship, Solid Ultimate, taking
full advantage of its solid
modelling technology — along
with Screen-To-Machine, believed
to be the most powerful automated
CAM solution in the woodworking
industry, which sends all
the designs as machine-ready G-
Code straight to the Anderson
Stratos Pro CNC router.
And Label-IT helps them keep
track of which panels belong to
which job when they come off the
machine.
Maurice Leigh, who runs the
company with wife Linda and
daughter Gemma, says they were
quick to take two enhancements
in particular on board; one of
which, the updated 3D customer
rendering feature using global illumination,
was introduced in the
latest release, V8.
“This is very beneficial for us as
it gets everything across to the
customer in a much clearer way,
showing them exactly how their
room will look in situ.”
The other feature which he
finds especially useful is the ability
to produce drawer boxes on the
router.
“It gives me more control when
I set out a job.
“We use six or seven different
styles of drawer box, and I can simply
put those into Cabinet Vision,
edit them and run them through
the system, instead of having to
draw everything manually and
then tell the shopfloor how to
shape the front or sides.”
As their work regularly incorporates
bespoke curved and shaped
cabinets, it can take around eight
hours to design a full kitchen.
“If we haven’t drawn the part in
Cabinet Vision initially, we use the
order entry system to put the information
from the customer’s
drawing, and manipulate the cabinets
or joints if necessary, before
nesting, and running the job
through Screen-To-Machine.
“The CNC operator loads the
machine and the panels are cut. We
have a take-off table and printer, so
as the sheets come off we print labels
using Label-IT, which include
all the edge-banding information
and correct descriptions.”
Jobs involving mainly square
panels are nested using block
nesting. For panels needing angular
shapes or curves they use Cabinet
Vision’s True Shape nesting
capability to get maximum usage
from their material, which includes
melamine faced chip board, veneered
and standard MDF and
plywood, along with hardwood
boards to make oak, maple and
walnut drawer boxes. Job sheets
are produced with each order, and
a booklet goes to the workshop so
the craftsmen can see exactly
what they are making.
“Because Gemma and I use
Cabinet Vision on a daily basis, it’s
just second nature to us.”
INTERZUM REVIEW
Textured, linear and ridged structures
THE TREND for rustic romanticism
is stamping its mark on the
decorative landscape: oak designs
take centre stage, while
highly structured surfaces
evocative of split wood and
matt surfaces give a natural feel.
With 29 new stock range additions
and a variety of innovative
make-to-order designs, RENOLIT
has based both its 3D and 2D
products on these trends.
Weathered Tones
The highlights among the new
products which appeared at Interzum
are the natural looking
Magellan oak door and three-dimensional
Veralinga emboss.
Veralinga is a deep, dynamic
wood structure with a smoothly
matt finish. It makes the perfect
partner to the Magellan oak decor
with its rustic image.
Magellan Vintage P has a warm
grey shade with light touches of
beige to make it look like it has
been bleached by the sun and a
discreet shimmer of silver lends a
hint of exclusivity. In combination
with the three-dimensional structure
of Veralinga, the finished effect
takes on the character of
freshly split wood.
Looking very sculptural and so
even more rustic is the make-toorder
decor Inedito Oak in combination
with Melinga emboss.
Rich knotting and gnarling give
life to the streaks of oak.
The rough-sawn planks produce
a shingle effect with their different
lengths.
The uneven joints and overlaps
cast shadows and give added
depth to the décor with a dramatic
effect.
The streaked wood structuring
of Canyon Monument Oak (MTO) is
both lively and rustic.
Slight finishing marks suggest
planing and with different light
areas they give the effect of
bleaching.
With narrow cracks and a few
knots, Canyon Monument Oak conveys
an aged and rough look while
its S-Coat surface gives a comparatively
matt feel.
Above, Roca Cream: left, Brabant.
Elegant oak
Thermo A oak is considerably more
discreet: a blacken oak with finely
grained areas, its richly dark colour
with red undertones provides
a charismatic and sophisticated
design.
The elegant surface structure
gives a discreet touch. Additionally,
Thermo B offers a slightly
browner effect tinged with a
lighter golden hue.
Also following the line of elegance
is the Brabant oak decor,
available in two colour ways, each
combined with different matching
surface structures to give both a
unique appearance.
A warm mid toned adaptation
is styled with a velvety sanded surface,
while the fresh design of the
sun bleached lighter coloured version
lends itself to the deeply
structured Linea emboss.
The most beautiful combinations
The new Elmo decor is a linear interpretation
of the highly characterful
elm, which also gives the
Veralinga emboss a strong feel.
With its slender stripes, Elmo produces
some fine lines. Elmo is
available in two elegant nuances
of grey.
A unique combination of ash
and oak is created by the Okasha
emboss: here you feel what you
see. Widely spaced sections of distinctive
ash alternate with an authentic
oak woodgrain in the
interlaying flat areas. Its striking
nature gives the impression of real
open-grained wood, completed
by a slight texture to its surface
finish.
Among the representatives of
antiquity is the new decor Roca
with the appearance of rusty
metal.
In two different versions which
unite an intensive array of colours,
Roca is making its entrance in the
home and increasingly also in
kitchens.
The reddish brown Roca Rust,
with brown tones inter-mingled
with burgundy red as an accent
“The Complete Solution”
NEVER a company to rest on its
laurels, Ney is keen to continually
develop its product range
and, in the process, cement its
name in the industry as a leading
UK component supplier.
This year’s Interzum saw several
of Ney’s principals launch new and
innovative products that will be
available to order from Ney later
this year — a welcome addition to
the portfolio, according to managing
director, Gerd Ney. “We want to
be able to offer a small business
everything it needs under one
roof,” said Mr Ney.
“Evolving our pro duct range
not only gives us the most advanced
products on the market, it
also brings us one step closer to
being a complete solution.”
Ney Ltd
www.ney.co.uk
In addition to its established brushed look edgebanding, German manufacturer
Heitz has introduced a new range of 3D textured, real-wood veneer at this year’s
Interzum. The new collection, which is available in four distinctive designs, has been
created to meet the growing demand for natural and palpable surfaces in the UK
and Europe. Available in Sandblast, Wormhole, Rough Cut and Wave designs, each
cut, which can be added to any common wood species, enhances the natural appearance
of the wood whilst adding depth and structure to its appearance.
Exclusively available in
the UK through Ney,
Polish engineering
company Laguna has
launched a new range of
LED lighting frames and
two new sliding door rail
systems, one that takes
the weight entirely on
the top rails, allowing for
a rail-free area. Perfect
for walk-in dressing
areas, the rails have been
designed with easy-toconceal
components
which are in keeping
with modern day
furniture designs. A
reliable favourite for all
sliding operations,
Laguna offers easy to
assemble systems, neatly
boxed in kit form.
A concept believed to be unique for shop fitters and designers, Bausch
Linnemann’s new Teco Smart self-adhesive foil is a quick and easy way
to update and customise furniture. Ideal for repair projects, the scratchresistant
foil leaves no residue if removed and does not lose its stick,
allowing it to be reused at a later date.
The Impro hinge, which was launched at this year’s Interzum by Turkish
fittings company Samet, has a five-stage damping system which allows
furniture doors of different sizes and
weights to be adjusted so they soft close
uniformly. The cushioning mechanism,
which is integrated into the hinge arm, can
be adjusted from 1-5 on the hinge arm
under the cap, allowing for slow or fast
movement and soft or silent closing. Characterised
by a clip-on assembly tool, gentle
pressure is all that is needed to engage
the hinges with the mounting plate, lessening
overall fitting time considerably.
HEALTH & SAFETY
Makita M-class dust extractor
DUST EXTRACTION is now a key industry challenge as the health risks associated with
dust are recognised as important as the HAV concerns that that have been addressed
in recent years. Dust from wood, welding and silica pose respiratory, skin and other serious
health risks. The latest Makita M-class dust extractor can be integrated with many
Makita power tools to greatly reduce these health risks in the work place.
The new Makita VC3211M has a large, stainless steel tank with capacity for 32 litres of dry
and 27 litres of wet material. The 1,050 W motor generates a maximum airflow of 3.5 m 3 /min
and a maximum suction of 22.0 kPa. Suction power can be varied by a simple power dial on
the control panel. A new design of automatic self-cleaning filter system includes twin threestage
filters comprising pre-filter, damper and powder filter. Reverse air-flow is used to clean
the filters in turn so that on this new Makita extractor is least one filter always in operation.
This very effective filter system includes an air-flow sensor that emits a warning alarm
when the air-flow is reduced by a near full tank or blocked filters.
Coupling Makita power tools to this new M-class dust extractor is simple. The suction hose
connects to the dust intake port, or extractor accessory on the power tool, and the power
cable is plugged directly into the extractor. This “power take-off” provides both a 110 V and 240 V connection. With the Makita VC3211M extractor
powered up, the on-off switch on the power tool controls the parallel operation of the extractor so that any time the power is generating dust in operation,
the extractor is automatically working to gather the dust for optimum operator protection.
Weighing just 17.6 kg, the Makita M-class extractor is easily manoeuvrable on two main wheels and a forward castor which also has a locking brake.
This extractor meets the exacting standards embodied in the pan-EU standard EN60335-2-69. This requires a class-M extractor to remove dust so that
the occupational exposure limits are equal to or greater than 0.1 mg/m 3 of air.
DCS fits the bill at North Offshore
ABERDEEN-based North Offshore Ltd, a leading fit-out specialist serving the offshore
accommodation, office, hotel and commercial property sectors, has recently invested
in new energy-saving dust extraction from Dust Control Systems Ltd.
North Offshore’s joinery workshop has a team of skilled craftsmen who operate an assortment
of woodworking machinery used in the manufacture of all kinds of bespoke joinery
and furniture including desks, bars, doors, screens and wall panelling.
The company decided that it was time to replace its existing extraction equipment with a
modern system that would fully comply with the latest COSHH regulations. Lee Garden, operations
director, says: “We were ready to replace our existing three-bag filter unit which was
housed in the workshop and had to be regularly emptied. Also, we were mindful of changing
legislation and were keen to improve the quality of the working environment by efficiently
extracting all dust at source. DCS was one of the four extraction companies which we
brought in to assess our particular needs and to put forward proposals for a new extraction
system.”
Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at Dust Control Systems Ltd, carried out a thorough evaluation
of the workshop’s dust extraction needs before proposing a scheme that would deal
with all dust generated in the workshop and would save on running costs. The DCS proposal
centred round a compact yet powerful filter system, located in a small space outside the
workshop and complying with the latest ATEX directives. System control would employ ECO-
GATE® energy-saving ‘on-demand’ technology and the scheme included a vacuum system
for use at work benches in assembly and finishing areas where sanders, hand tools and snip
saws are used.
Lee Garden
adds: “DCS was
by far the most
ECOGATE greenBOX12 controller monitors machine usage and adjusts
fan speed accordingly.
DCS compact filter fits in a small corner of the yard.
professional of the companies we talked to. Every detail and benefit of
their proposal was fully explained and we have been very impressed with
the way they have managed the project. Installation and commissioning
of the new plant was carried out extremely efficiently with little or no disruption
to our production.”
The compact DCS filter is an NFSZ modular unit, fitted with high-performance
‘Superbag’ polyester filter bags. it has an airflow capacity of
16,000 m 3 /hr and is capable of efficiently coping with varying loads of
wood dust and chips. The filter plant incorporates a rotary valve and
waste conveying system which transfers woodwaste directly to a box cart.
An ECOGATE greenBOX12 controller, in conjunction with a variable speed
drive, automatically adjusts the speed of the main extraction fan as woodworking
machines come on line or shut down — resulting in projected
power savings of over 50% versus a traditional system.
Decorative Panel Components chooses Trend Saw Blades
DECORATIVE Panels Components
Ltd of Huddersfield, West
Yorkshire, have recently
switched saw blade suppliers to
Trend Industrial Tooling.
The blades are supplied and
serviced by Trend’s main Industrial
Tooling Centre in Yorkshire, RS Saw
and Tool Ltd, Halifax.
The Decorative Panels Group is
believed to be the largest paper
foil laminator and trade supplier of
paper laminated board and panel
components to the furniture manufacturing
and allied industries in
the UK and Europe, and currently
has four sites in the UK.
The saw blades were initially
tested against three other saw
blade manufacturers on a new, recently
installed, Selco panel sizing
centre where their performance
was carefully monitored.
Decorative Panels Components,
based at its new site in West Yorkshire,
produces a diverse range of
cut, edged, shaped and drilled
panels with component production
currently at 500,000 panels
per week.
Decorative Panels was looking
for a combination of saw blade
and servicing quality that would
offer the company the best value
per metre of panel cut. Trend’s
quality of beam saw, in conjunction
with the sawing expertise of
RS Saw and Tool, proved to be the
winning formula.
Richard Sanderson, owner of RS
Saw and Tool, commented: “We
took the decision in 2009 to invest
in Vollmer’s new CHD270 five axis
saw grinding machine along with
a three-carriage robot loading facility
to enable us to compete in
an increasingly demanding market.
This was a very large investment
for our company to make
and many people thought I was
mad to do it at the time.”
The machine allows fully automated
grinding of up to 100 saw
blades with unrivalled grinding
quality from the first blade to the
last. The new Vollmer machine can
also be run un-manned overnight.
Richard added, “The new
CHD270 has proved to be absolutely
the right investment to
make and has allowed me to compete
for business that previously I
wouldn’t have been able to
handle. Our company has won
business from some of the largest
panel manufacturing companies
in the North of England and we
are now in a position to easily
compete with our European
rivals.”
Andrew Aistrop, factory manager
at Decorative Panels, commented:
“RS Saw and Tool
provided a brilliant customer ser -
vice and the blades that are supplied
are excellent value for
money. We are extremely pleased
with RS Saw and Tool and would
highly recommend them.”
RS Saw and Tool have been selling
the Trend range of router cutters
and accessories for many
years and was approached by
Trend when the company
launched its Industrial Tooling
range in 2004.
“I started buying Trend’s new
range of Industrial Saw blades and
was particularly impressed with
the quality of their beam saws, “
Richard continued.
The beam saws include a special
dynamic balancing process, a
straightening operation believed
to be unique, increased sharpness
compared to the industry standard
and ultimately give a long
lasting quality cut.
Trend’s Industrial Tooling manager,
Ian Small, commented: “Our
beam saw range is a result of
many years’ research and development
and it is critical to the blades’
overall performance that the servicing
company has the necessary
equipment to sharpen the blade
correctly.”
RS Saw and Tool is such a company,
that has invested in the latest
sharpening technology and
has proven the quality of the
beam saw blades in a number of
different board and panel manufacturers/suppliers
throughout
the country.
Ian added, “Trend has proven
that it has the right products for
the industrial market. We
launched our Modular Window
System for small to medium sized
joinery companies in 2008 and
have now shown that we have the
products for the panel processing
industry.”
New router head
for Zapkut ZM
vertical
panel
saw
BRITISH vertical panel saw specialist
Zapkut Ltd has announced
an all-new floating router head
option for its ZM moving column
vertical panel saw range.
The new router head will be of
particular interest to those whose
manufacturing process includes
the grooving or edging of timber,
timber-related sheet products or
signmaking materials. Switching
between saw and router heads is
quick and easy, allowing a single
operator to swiftly size and rout
sheet materials with no workpiece
repositioning. Depth of groove is
set with a simple twist dial, while
the router head’s ‘floating’ design
ensures a consistent depth of cut
even on flimsier materials, which
may bow and bend. In conjunction
with the robust, precision engineering
in the ZM frame, this
makes accurate grooving rapid
and straightforward.
Keith Bunker, Zapkut’s managing
director, believes the new
router head will be popular with
the ZM range’s key customer base
— smaller signmakers and woodworkers
with limited space, budgets
and cutting requirements.
“For decades, vertical panel
saws have largely been the sheet
cutting tool of choice for larger
businesses with significant cutting
loads, and workshops and budgets
to match,” he noted. “The ZM
range is designed specifically for
the smaller operator; it is compact,
simple to set up and operate, and
is competitively priced.
“The floating head makes the
already versatile ZM range even
more capable,” he continued. “It allows
users to smooth, streamline
and accelerate workflow without
compromising on quality. That
adds up to happier customers and
healthier bottom line.”
The ZM moving column vertical
panel saw range caters for sheet
sizes ranging from 2.5 m x 1.5 m to
3.1 m x 2.1 m, offers cross, rip,
plunge and bevel cutting with no
workpiece repositioning and cut
depth of 38 mm. Sheet supports
are movable from the bottom of
the frame to the mid-point, for
work on smaller pieces. Switching
from saw head to router head takes
just seconds, allowing the user to
precisely cut, groove and edge a
workpiece in one operation.
Signmaking applications will include
the V-grooving of composite
materials such as Dibond prior
to folding to create light boxes
and similar products, while woodworkers
will find the router head
invaluable for the creation of
grilles and decorative edges.
30 m/min, and 24 m/min for the
rear pusher and clamps.
Long-life high performance and
quality is due to the use of THK
guides instead of round bars for
the raising and lowering of the
saw carriage and the base derived
from the top of the range models.
The saw boasts strong ‘H’ shaped
beams and rack and pinion for the
rear pusher movement with very
high positioning precision due to
the reading system utilising a
magnetic band.
The automatic side aligner, included
as standard, slides on THK
guides, ensuring maximum precision
when cross cutting panels,
therefore reducing cutting times.
The saw carriage, driven by rack
and pinion, ensures top finishing
quality and long life performance,
which are typical features of much
larger industrial machines.
Waste reduction is ensured by
special openings in the pressure
beam, which eliminates all interferences
with the panel grippers
and ensures that the entire panel
is utilised. Two rack and pinion systems
connected by a torsion bar
ensure that the vertical pressure
beam movements are perfectly
aligned. The beam saw is controlled
by the latest PC/PLC control
system, with several software options
available, such as Wincut
(PC/PLC operator’s interface) and
graphic editor, Cutty (first level
cutting optimiser program), 3D
Simulator, label printing, Ottimo
Perfect Cut (optimiser defined to
be used in the office), etc.
SAWS IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES
Starbank Panel Products invests in Schelling
THE SECRET to Starbank’s success
is its continued investment
in state of the art technology including
a brand new saw and
board storage system from one
single source: that is, Schelling.
The combination of the FH6 cutto-size
saw with the VS16 board
storage system is considered to
be the perfect marriage.
Paul Atkinson, production director
at Starbank, commented:
“Production technology is growing
even more powerful and it is
the combined intelligence of the
FH6 cut-to-size saw and VS16
board storage solution that has
improved productivity, optimised
floor space, reduced manual handling
and ultimately improved our
working practices.”
This system has helped Starbank
achieve its aim for continuous
improvements in all areas.
Starbank Panel Products Ltd, a
family owned and operated business,
established in 1976, is one of
the leading companies specialising
in high pressure laminate fabrication,
postforming, state-ofthe-art
CNC component manufacture
and solid surface fabrication
for a variety of industries. As
the current owner of a Schelling
FT-H Evolution 430 cut-to-size saw,
Starbank was very familiar with
the service levels and build quality
delivered by Schelling. This gave
the company confidence to reinvest
in the Schelling brand once
again.
Look behind the façade of an
industrial building on Sankey Valley
Industrial Estate, and you will
be surprised at the high level of
technology and craftsmanship.
For Starbank the excellent build
quality has been achieved in part
by its continued investment in the
latest production technology.
It is important, however, not to
forget the contribution made by
the loyal workforce: it is this hand
built input which adds to the appeal
of the Starbank brand.
Philip Darbyshire, managing director
at Starbank, says: “We are
immensely proud that what
began as a six man team has
grown into a 100 strong workforce
and our investment in state-ofthe-art
technology is part of a conscious
policy to invest in what we
consider to be the best technology
on the market.”
Against a background of factory
space limitations, the importance
of organising the cutting solution
with board handling was vital to
achieving the production targets
set by Starbank.
Philip Darbyshire adds, “Let’s
face it, it’s challenging to see
where opportunities for improvement
may lie, particularly when
you see the same factory space
delivering over 30 per cent more
production — it’s amazing.”
With storage zones up to 16 m
wide and 20 m long, with only 10
cm between each individual stack
up to a height of 2 m and a system
height of only 3.6 m — this compact
design has delivered storage
space benefits, resulting in considerable
cost savings for Starbank.
Paul Atkinson points out that
the automated board storage system,
which covers 320 m 2 , copes
effortlessly with urgent orders, because
there is no more searching
and driving around in a forklift
truck: up to 2,500 board options
are automatically collected by the
area storage system and delivered
to the saw, saving a great deal of
time. The Schelling VS16 benefits
from a travel speed of 150 m/min
in the X and Y axis, while in the Z
axis (up and down) it is 60 m/min.
Also, thanks to powerful servo motors,
the trolley runs quietly and
smoothly on vulcanised high performance
running wheels.
Starbank customers can select
from hundreds of different materials
and colours. This was previously
managed with countless
wooden pallets that swallowed up
approximately 450 m 2 of factory
space. This has changed with the
Schelling VS16 area storage system:
by using ‘chaotic stacks’ a
wider range of board sizes and
types can be stored in just one location.
The flexibility of the
Page 22 Panel, Wood & Solid Surface June/July 2013

SAWS IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES
’s board storage system and saw
Schelling vacuum carriage means
work pieces from 2.1 m to 4.1 m
long and 0.6 m to 2.1 m wide can
be transported directly onto the
infeed aligning table on the FH6
cut-to-size saw.
Just to drive efficiency even further,
the vacuum carriage can load
material onto the infeed aligning
table while the saw is still cutting
the previous job.
For Starbank, even further productivity
was achieved by designing
the area storage system to
accommodate the FT-H Evolution
430 saw, by delivering material to
a separate infeed driven roller
track. Basically, boards are fed directly
to either Schelling saw at exactly
the right time and in the
correct quantities.
As Markus Freuis, managing director
of Schelling UK Ltd, explains:
“Up to 50% of a panel
cutting process can be taken up
by manual panel handling.”
For Starbank, the VS16 board
storage system is now capable of
reading the complete cutting list
and facilitates the loading of the
cut-to-size saw in the most productive
manner. This ensures that
boards move quickly from the
warehouse to the machine and are
cut efficiently.
The High Performance Optimisation
(HPO) software calculates
the cutting planes to minimise
material and production costs. For
the operator there is even a visual
presentation of the cutting planes
on a large 22” TFT screen.
At the heart of the board storage
system and the cut-to-size
saw is the MCS Evolution saw control
system and the Storage Manager
board control software. No
other communication is required,
ensuring all the benefits from a
single communication platform.
The Storage Manager software is
clear and easy to use, and can be
adapted to any storage strategy,
from conventional to chaotic.
To ensure the vacuum carriage
collects just one board at a time,
weight sensors built into the vacuum
carriage automatically detect
the correct material weight. Also
the vacuum carriage has corner
suction units, which are designed
as bellow suction pads, permitting
separation of the boards to ensure
that only one board is collected.
Some material at Starbank has
a high gloss double sided surface,
which is sensitive and need to be
‘handled with care’. The material is
protected using frictionless suction
pads, servo motors delivering
gentle acceleration and deceleration
of the vacuum carriage, and
no lateral movement of the board
when placing it down on a stack.
“For us the associated risk of
damaging any material resulting
from stock movement has been
eliminated by the VS16 board storage
system,” says Paul Atkinson.
Starbank was already familiar
with Schelling’s Austrian engineering:
in particular, the double
strip aligners placed before and
after the saw line, which remain
on the material to provide accuracy
even when cutting.
For Starbank, the speed of the
saw was vitally important: the FH6
had to deliver the same impressive
performance as the VS16. And it
did: with a saw blade diameter of
460 mm it provided a saw bladed
projection of up to 135 mm, an insert
speed of 80 m/min and a saw
travel speed of up to 150 m/min.
In addition to standard FH6 machine
features, Schelling offers a
range of options designed to suit
individual requirements.
Starbank chose the air flotation
machine table-bed option, which
helps protect the sensitive high
gloss surface, brass air nozzles in
the machine table-bed provide a
cushion of air which helps eliminate
the possibility of scratches
during the transfer movement
from rip to cross cut. Achieving a
high degree of automation was the
reason for including the internal
turning device, which allows for
head cut patterns without any interruption
to the production flow.
Also, Starbank chose to include the
DUPLUS2 system and a sophisticated
aligning device to accommodate
overhanging laminates.
To summarise, Philip Darbyshire
explained: “We realised that material
loading and handling were essential
performance characteristics
which would increase the efficiency
of our cut-to-size saw. So
working with Schelling the aim
was to create a storage, handling
and cutting solution that delivered
improvements in productivity
and efficiency, better warehouse
utilisation, a reduction in
manual handling and safer working
conditions: the solution has
achieved everything and more.”
F 45 ELMO III D from Altendorf at Ligna
THE F 45 ELMO generation of
sliding table saws manufactured
by Altendorf has long
been renowned within the
industry. And now these machines,
so named because of
their three motorised adjustable
axes, have even more
to offer. Altendorf presented its
new F 45 ELMO III D model
equipped with tiltable saw unit
at the Ligna trade fare.
With a saw unit that can be
tilted to 46° in either direction, the
F 45 ELMO III D offers even greater
flexibility, sawing straightforward
bevels and compound mitres. As
soon as the start button is pressed,
the electric motor system sets the
height of the blade, the tilt angle
and the position of the rip fence as
configured on the 12” touch
screen. The operator can choose
whether to position the workpiece
against the rip fence or the crosscut
mitre fence.
The tiltable saw unit offers a raft
of benefits: The fact that the saw
blade tilts relative to the workpiece
means bulky, heavy items
can be cut without awkward
manipulation. Workpieces with
delicate surfaces can be processed
on the sliding table with the
external (good) side uppermost.
The saw unit tilt mechanism not
only opens up new applications, it
also breaks new ground in positioning
speed, travelling through
90° in a mere 12 seconds. The
ability to tilt quickly in either direction
enables matching angles
to be cut precisely and efficiently.
As with other Altendorf sliding
table saws, the F 45 ELMO III D features
just two safety hoods (narrow
or wide) to ensure safe working.
Designed to maintain optimal
flow, the hoods use a parallelogram
system for easy height adjustment.
Switching between the
narrow hood and the wide model
is a matter of just a few manual
steps and the hood can also be disengaged
and swung out in one
manual action from the front of
the machine for special tasks.
The saw drive unit already used
in the Altendorf 2 model raises the
bar in terms of performance and
quiet operation and the synchronous
servo motors fitted are up to
15% more efficient than the electric
motors previously used. How
much power the motor draws depends
on how hard it is made to
work, so no energy is wasted. The
drive unit, which has power reserves
of up to 120%, offers infinitely
variable speed control
between 1,500 and 5,000 rpm and
with its minimal saw blade wear,
optimum cut and high energy efficiency
makes it ideal for a broad
range of new applications.
The machine’s control system
already has a proven track record,
having been used for many years
in the F45 ELMO III, where its
straightforward and intuitive operating
concept and the 12”
touchscreen (310 mm diagonal)
are highly valued features. The
control system has been designed
with ease of use to the fore, with
only the functions currently in use
being displayed on screen, for intance,
and all axes positioned directly
for easy tracking and fast
operation.
New Scotch-Brite unitised wheel from 3M
DIVERSIFIED technology company,
3M, is bringing together
two advanced technologies in
the latest addition to its portfolio.
Carrying the leading, heritage
Scotch-Brite brand, the new Rapid
Cut unitised wheels offer a cut rate
as much as three times higher than
competitive unitised wheel brands,
according to the company, and can
perform tasks that would otherwise
need several speciality abrasives.
This latest development blends
3M non-woven abrasives expertise
with 3M’s own proprietary precision-shape
grain to deliver an
exceptionally long life and a faster,
cooler cut that eliminates burnishing
and heat stress.
Scotch-Brite Technology binds
together synthetic fibres and abrasive
particles to create a conformable
three-dimensional material.
Its open structure reduces the risk
of warping or discolouration of
the part and resists loading to help
improve finish and prolong product
life. While traditional Scotch-
Brite products use conventional
abrasive particles, in the new
Rapid Cut wheels, these have
been replaced by 3M precision
shaped grain. This comprises uniform
multi-replicated structures
which fracture as they wear to
form sharp points and edges, enabling
the new wheel to stay consistently
sharp for longer.
DESIGN & INNOVATION
RW Machines launches ’new stand alone business’ —
FOUR DAYS, two shows, a major
sale and a raft of serious enquiries
— this was the entry of
RW Machines’ new CoJet 1631
ink jet printing system into the
UK marketplace. Two open
house shows — one at RW’s
Bicester headquarters and the
other at its Leeds showrooms —
unveiled a new machine that
David Thompson Rowland believes
will ultimately change the
UK panel processing market
sector for ever.
CoJet 1631 is the next big opportunity
for stand-alone businesses
decorating wood-based
panels and other materials across
a huge range of markets. It is the
new 1442 dpi high-speed ink jet
printer with a 10 x 5 work table and
ultra high print speeds — big
brother to the smaller 760 dpi
model that launched at W12 in October.
David Thompson Rowland
said the dedicated demonstrations
were a powerful way to exhibit a
uniquely powerful machine.
“It’s a breath-taking departure
from panel-processing machinery
norms,” he said. “Superb decorative
printing of wood-based panels and
components is the minimum standard
by which this new technology
will ultimately be judged. But to
demonstrate what a bombshell
CoJet is, I wanted to show how its
capabilities can be expanded to include
other essential cabinet-based
or panel-display finishing options.
Standard 8 x 4 wood based panels can be accommodated on the
10 x 5ft work table; a range of other materials can also be printed.
Designs involving deep-pored hardwood woodgrains with contrasting
panels plus complex decorative inlays can be easily inkjet
printed and UV dried at rates of 20 metres per hour.
“There are so many applications
this new technology can address:
it truly is a stand-alone business in
its own right,” said David. “It was to
wood and panel processors that I
wanted first to show the new machine
because I know almost all
the companies that can benefit,
many in a fairly major way, from
what it does.”
The new CoJet 1631 produces
flat or textured wood-grain patterns
that still have the feel of the
forest about them. Complex and
sometimes raised surface images,
including deep-pored wood
grains in a huge range of shades,
are a minor part of its capabilities.
The same touchy-feely qualities
can also be applied to graphics —
from Pop Art or figurative wall
decor to washroom doors, kitchen
and bathroom tiles, sink and
cooker splash-backs, display
from CoJet!
graphics, corporate and other signage
— even head stones! Anything
with a flat surface (and it
doesn’t even need to be flat!) can
be addressed by CoJet, including
textured and even routered surfaces
like cabinet frontals and architectural
doors in softwood,
blockboard, MDF and composite.
The opportunities are limited only
by the imagination of the user —
or their drawing office!
This new high speed CoJet machine
packs eight print heads instead
of four, with two further
print-head options plus a 10 x 5
working table and 1442 dpi highspeed
printing capabilities. For
comparison, the images on this
and other pages of this and other
magazines were almost certainly
printed at 300 dpi using a coarser
screen for high print speeds.
Inkjet print heads will overprint
an image up to eight times, building
a surface with depth and texture
while still covering around 20
m 2 /hr in normal production mode.
The resulting finish of a natural
wood grain like oak, or other
deep-pored timbers, is convincing
to both eye and touch. CoJet
prints onto almost any flat(ish) surface
on wood-based panels of all
types plus many other relevant
All controls are easily accessed on the front panel of the machine.
materials including metals, ceramics,
glass, foam-boards, acrylics
and even concrete.
Double UV print-head lamps cure
inks almost immediately, making
CoJet a seriously productive machine
for any manufacturer requiring justin-time,
custom-designed décors up
to 100 mm thick. Printing for tiles and
kitchen or bathroom splash-backs,
and other even more specialised interior
work, generated a lot of interest
at both shows, said David.
Anderson engineer Silae Heckele demonstrates easy access to
inks stored under the machine in a pull-out drawer.
Exclusion of part of an image is easy to achieve saving on both
inks and time; UV bulb life is estimated at 500 working hours.
“Tiles can be a wicked price,” he
said. “By printing with seven
colours plus variations, we can
produce handsome designs with
lots of colour and detail — probably
more than will ever be seen at
a ceramic tile house — at around a
fiver a tile. CoJet can print ceramic
tile emulations, glass splashbacks
for sinks and metal ones for cookers
and can print on plastics and
virtually any other substrate
media.”
Vital stability of the working
area is provided by a phenolic suction
table divided into six zones. It
is mounted on a solid steel frame
and the powerful vacuum grips
single large or multiple smaller
work pieces for precision printing
that may involve multiple passes.
Large and complex graphics or
single-colour images can be created
and multiple smaller work
pieces printed simultaneously, to
produce complex and colourful effects
for products such as tiles or
cabinet frontals.
Environmental management
and protection are key principles
of Anderson’s CoJet project: inks
come in clearly marked one-litre
containers that plug in for easy
use and disposal, and they are all
UV curable. The table supports 500
kg and eight print heads deliver
black, cyan, magenta and yellow.
Light cyan, light magenta and —
crucially — white are also available
for background and for often
crucial contrast colours and wiring
is provided for two additional and
optional print heads.
Scanning and repro of complex fine art images was one of the demonstration high points of RW Machines’ open house events.
ing hard on random shapes and
sizes for bespoke-order customers
could expect inks to last several
weeks between changes, David
Thompson Rowland confirms
Production costs quoted at the
shows were about £4/m 2 for flat
work and high-definition or 3D
comes in at around £8. It isn’t hard
to imagine what could be
achieved in connection with very
many proprietary household
products or surfaces across the
board.
Day-to-day maintenance involves
purging of inks through the
heads and full flushing and a ‘wipe
and swipe’ takes around 10 minutes.
The heads themselves are
from the likes of Minolta: Anderson’s
policy is for the best technology
available. CoJet is designed and
manufactured in Sweden by Anderson;
it is based on its proven
CNC running gear and supported
by a seven-year working guarantee.
often at the mercy of third-party
suppliers. However, CoJet enables
theoretical production on demand,
perhaps for same-day dispatch
and with consequent
reductions in stock holding costs
and storage damage risks.
Three days of operator training
are included by Anderson with the
sale and commissioning of a machine.
Training covers maintenance,
software and machine
operation; it is provided free on
the customer’s own shop floor for
a minimum of three people when
CoJet machines are installed.
Attendance and serious sales
enquiries at the April 25 and 26
open house show in Leeds outnumbered
those in Bicester by six
to one — evidence, said David, of
the continuing shift in manufacturing
from south to north. One
order is now in the bag and there
are many other enquiries: from
small, specialist operators on bespoke
project work right on up to
the big boys of the decorative
panels sector.
CoJet is now becoming increasingly
widely seen as anything from
a panel-finishing workhorse to a
one-off signature design business.
David Clouting reinvents the wheel
WHILST WOODGRAIN has become the
most popular effect in many areas, this
has also seen it become a commodity
product with the danger of suppliers
being forced into competing on price
alone.
By concentrating on delivering the
highest quality products at highly competitive
prices, David Clouting Ltd allows
its customers to match the needs of the
fashion-conscious interiors market while
continuing to make profits and reinvest
for the future.
The company’s Rijeke Oak G3606-Z5 is a
perfect example of this. The design was introduced
as an MFC/MDF by Kronospan
last year, with the David Clouting version
providing an exact match in PVC.
Rijeke Oak blends both print and texture
to represent a light, straight-grained
linear oak. The end result is a highly commercial
effect with a fresh tone, creating a
timeless and classic design, destined to
become the next generation’s leading
straight-grained oak, according to the
company. The use of the new Z5 embossing texture, created through
considerable investment by LG Hausys, enhances both natural appearance
and tactile effect. Versions of both horizontal and vertical texture
are available to match all requirements.
Yet another example is provided by Sand Lyon Ash which, through its
simplicity of design, provides a natural look that will sit comfortably in
virtually all room settings. This high quality
product combines subtle warmth and
soft light colouring, resulting in a superb
colour combination that will easily blend
with a wide selection of interior designs.
Further proof of David Clouting’s close
collaboration with LG can be seen in the
example of Sand Lyon Ash UQ614-Z5
(edging melamine M84780, PVC
PR949LRV), resulting in the creation of a
contemporary texture that works perfectly
in tandem with the linear nature of
the wood print.
There is a third combination from which
manufacturers can benefit, that of the
flexibility of PVC and MDF to fit any shape
and style of fully wrapped panels, providing
limitless options to match customer
requirements and offering a wealth of opportunities
for companies to deliver valueadded
service.
Sand Lyon Ash is matched to Egger
MFC Sand Lyon Ash and David Clouting
Ltd is delighted that Pfleiderer has introduced
Coimbra Ash R5028-RU — the original
name of Sand Lyon Ash — into its 2013 range, which means that is
also an exact print match. Complementing this further, David Clouting
Ltd also stocks matching edging tape.
DESIGN & INNOVATION
New DEROS from Mirka is electrifyingly
efficient
WHAT IS BELIEVED to be the
world’s lightest electric sanding
machine in its class, featuring a
brushless motor combined with
patented driving technology,
was launched by Mirka on 1 May
2013.
The Direct Electric Random Orbital
Sander or DEROS plugs into
an ordinary power supply, making
it easy to move around, and is suitable
for multiple sanding operations
to produce a highly effective
smooth finish.
The DEROS is designed to deliver
a rapid, efficient, consistently
powerful performance compa -
rable to a conventional 500 W
electric machine, even under
heavy load. It is economical to use,
reducing energy costs.
This low-maintenance, extremely
reliable sander has a long
lifespan and features a ‘closed construction’
preventing dust from
entering the motor, avoiding typical
wear and tear damage experienced
by electric machines.
The DEROS has a low profile so
the hand is close to the vertical
surface, delivering good control
over the sanding process. Its long
body encompasses a two-hand,
ergonomic grip, effective for
heavy sanding applications. It has
low noise and vibration levels, reducing
arm fatigue and minimising
the risk of Hand Arm Vibration
Syndrome.
Its innovative features also include
a soft start function, a builtin
electronic motor brake and a
smooth, easy to operate level to
control and maintain a constant
motor speed. A new backing pad
brake acts like a seal minimising air
leakage between the pad and the
shroud, and making dust extraction
more efficient. This is particularly
important due to the increasing
levels of dust associated with
some woods and the potential additional
work created by extraneous
particles during the painting
process. In addition, its power cord
is removable and interchangeable.
Craig Daycock, managing director
of Mirka UK, says, “DEROS is the
new convenient solution for a
multitude of sanding operations
that is very easy to manoeuvre
and use wherever there is a power
supply. Its powerful performance,
innovative features and ergonomic
design will pack a real
punch for end users.”
DEROS is delivered in a Mirka
case, including both 125 mm and
150 mm pads.
DESIGN & INNOVATION
Decorative Panels Components raises
the bar with edgebanding performance
NOTHING stands still for long at Decorative
Panels Components. Following the opening
of the state of the art 175,000 ft 2 new production
facility in June last year, further investments
have been made to widen the product
offering into new and diverse markets.
Recognised as a market leader for high
volume manufacture of kitchen, bedroom, bathroom,
shelving and storage panels, Decorative
Panels Components has identified areas of the
market that require more stringent performance
criteria in terms of panel performance than a
traditional EVA edged panel can safely deliver.
Whilst EVA is suitable for the vast majority of
edgebanding applications and will perform well,
certain areas of the market both in the UK and
abroad can benefit from the use of a PUR
(polyurethane) adhesive system. In response to
this, Decorative Panels Components has invested
in a PUR double sided edgebanding line that was
fully operational by the end of May 2013.
Working in conjunction with Nordson, a tried
and trusted partner to the company, it has been
decided that the PUR resin will be applied by a nozzle slot system, rather
than roller, to achieve the ultimate in coat weight control and clean glue
line. This type of application system is particularly suited to the production
of high quality fascia panels, including High Gloss and in conjunction with
the fast setting characteristics of PUR, eliminates glue line smearing.
Working closely with Henkel to find the right PUR for the system has
been key to the success of the project, as achieving the correct flow rate
is critical to the end quality of the glue line. There are many advantages
in using a PUR adhesive system, not least the far higher heat and water
resistance values when compared to a traditional resin system as well as
increased cold temperature resistance and deep chemical penetration
into wood based substrates, which contributes to the excellent bonding
characteristics. As PUR is a moisture curing resin, the initial bond strength
achieved is superb, the moisture available in the air triggers the chemical
reaction to make the bond.
The combination of these greatly enhanced performance characteristics
make panels edged with a PUR system particularly suitable for use in areas
that have high heat, moisture or humidity such as bathroom and certain
kitchen fascia applications. Of course, such arduous conditions are commonplace
in many other countries of the world, and it is in these export
markets that PUR really is an essential component of any panel product.
Following the investment, Decorative Panels Components has already
secured a prestigious contract to supply a development company in
Hong Kong with a range of kitchen and bathroom products safe in the
knowledge that PUR will perform to the highest possible standard in a
country that has humidity levels approaching 100%.
DESIGN & INNOVATION
It’s a Chelsea affair
AT THIS YEAR’S Chelsea Flower
Show, a number of Medite Tricoya’s
customers’ products were
on show, including MOD105,
HSP Garden Building, Oxford
Planters, The Garden Trellis
Company Ltd (illustrated right)
and Gaze Burvill. Each uses
Medite Tricoya for its extreme
durability in external conditions.
Medite Tricoya, an extremely
durable MDF, is well suited to external
as well as internal applications.
The acetylation process of
the wood naturally alters the
chemical structure, so that the resulting
product is not affected by
moisture in the same way as other
wood products. This gives it its extreme
durability and its ability to
provide a 50-year guarantee, all of
which are underpinned by BRE coordinated
test results to EN350-2
of 1 (the equivalent of oak). The
panel also has all the versatile machining
properties of environmentally
sound MDF.
MOD105 designs, fabricates and
installs innovative, eco-friendly
modular buildings with a difference.
For Oxford Planters, Medite
Tricoya enables planters to be machined
in various shapes. HSP Garden
Buildings, had its bespoke
gazebo and buildings featured by
The Cutting Edge Collection.
The Garden Trellis Company,
which uses Medite Tricoya for both
planters and fence panels, had its
planters on display at the show.
W14 and Timber Expo
co-locate for 2014
W14 AND TIMBER EXPO have
announced the co-location
of their exhibitions and
conferences for
2014. The respective
owners of the
shows, Huddlestone
Events and
TRADA Technology,
are co-operating
to stage the
events together at
the NEC Birmingham
in October 2014.
W14 will run from 5th until 8th
October 2014, while Timber Expo
2014 will be open in adjacent halls
during 7th and 8th October 2014.
The co-location will be supported
by joint marketing initiatives to
highlight the further increased opportunities
and value for visitors.
Angela McGowan, exhibition
director of W14, said: “Both shows
obviously have their unique focus
in the industry — W14 is the UK
event for the joinery and furniture
manufacturing industry and Timber
Expo provides the focal point
for specifiers, engineers and architects
focusing on sustainable applications
for timber technology in
the built environment. This move
is great for the many visitors who
would like to see both shows in a
single visit. W14 is already planning
for expansion following 85%
immediate re-booking from the
successful 2012 show and the colocation
will now provide an
added dimension for manufacturers
interested in the possibilities
of timber as a material.”
Timber Expo event director,
Loretta Sales, comments:
“Collaboration has always
been at the
core of Timber Expo.
We listen to our exhibitors
and visitors
and try to respond
to what they want
from our event. The
move of Timber Expo
to the NEC in 2013 is a
major stepping stone for
the show, but the collaboration
with W14 in 2014 will add a further
dynamic and permit visitors to
both shows to maximise their time
investment.
“For 2013, Timber Expo is
adding lots of new content in
terms of features and seminar programmes.
We are focusing heavily
on overseas exhibitors and are attracting
a lot of interest from innovative
structural timber companies
looking to access the UK market.”
Both shows will be making further
significant announcements in
the coming months as the details
of the collaboration are finalised.
In the meantime, registration is
now open for Timber Expo 2013,
which will be held at the NEC
Birmingham on 24th and 25th
September 2013.
MAKITA power tools are being
used by apprentices at The Living
Furniture Project, a social enterprise
organisation based in workshops
off Brick Lane in the London
Borough of Tower Hamlets.
It exists to provide paid jobs
and training for the homeless, giving
specialist commercial support
to help them rebuild their lives.
The main activity of the workshop
is producing bespoke, high-end
furniture, designed by an attached
creative studio, and all materials
used in the making of the furniture
are reclaimed and recycled.
Headed by Alastair Sloan, grant
funding has been secured which is
being used to invest in power
tools, equipment and training, allowing
the apprentices to earn
London Living Wage and benefit
as much as possible from their
time on the project.
“We work mainly to commision,”
says Alastair, “and we rely heavily
on our supporters. Our training
laminated with a high pressure
laminate, for all the carcassing material
in its cabinets.
Peter Clifton, Medite Tricoya
Product Manager, commented,
“The wide ranging use of the material
really is a testament to its exceptional
flexibility and how its extreme
durability makes it the ideal
choice for so many applications,
both internally and externally.”
Living Furniture Project
sessions with Makita are invaluable
as some of the apprentices
have limited skills or knowledge of
using power tools and it is also assisting
their buddies and volunteers
to achieve the best.
“Our first Collection, ‘Emerald’,
has been shown at major design
events such as Clerkenwell Design
Week, Pulse and the May Design
Series, and has been very well received.
It’s been a great experience
for the apprentices,” he adds.
Items are sold and the monies
raised are used to source more reclaimed
materials and to pay overheads
and wages.
“We currently use Makita cordless
drills, belt sanders, jigsaws and
circular saws and their quality is
fully appreciated here in the workshop.
We are indebted to our supporters,”
says Alastair.
DESIGN & INNOVATION
The evolution of MDF: Valchromat from James Latham
TIMBER and panel products distributor,
James Latham, is now
stocking Valchromat, an innovative
and award winning material
which offers almost limitless
decorative applications.
Valchromat is a coloured Engineered
Fibreboard which is believed
to be completely unique, in
that the colour runs throughout
the entire board. This highly effective
and impactful result is
achieved by adding organic dyes
and a specially formulated resin to
the wood fibre before pressing.
With eight vibrant colours in
the range, Valchromat is certain to
be popular with the UK shop fitting
and furniture manufacturing
sectors, where bold and impactful
colours are part of the specification.
Plus, Valchromat has also
been approved by the British Standards
Association as safe to use in
the manufacture of children’s toys.
Andrew Wright, director of
James Latham, commented: “We
have a history and expertise in
bringing new and innovative
products to the UK market and
Valchromat ticks all the boxes for
us. I am sure it will have a big impact
in the UK market, not only
within the shopfitting and furniture
making sectors but also
within hospitality and commercial
interiors as well as for exhibitions.”
In addition to its unique appearance,
Valchromat boasts a
number of time and cost saving
features and benefits; it’s easy and
quick to finish — no edging is required
— and being moisture and
UV resistant, non-toxic and load
resistant, the possibilities for use
are endless. Plus, scratches and
marks on the finished product go
largely unnoticed because the
colour runs evenly through the
board.
Valchromat is available in the
following board sizes: 2,500 mm x
1,850 mm/1,250 mm and in 8 mm,
12 mm, 16 mm, 19 mm, 25 mm
and 30 mm thicknesses.
James Latham now offers one
of the UK’s widest ranges of innovative
surface solutions — all
available from one supplier — and
directly from stock at all nine of its
nationwide panel distribution
sites. All wood used is FSC certified
and is sourced from forest waste,
residue from timber mills, pine
and recycled pine.
Makita supports National School of Furniture
MAKITA UK is proud to announce a new collaboration with the National School of Furniture
(NSF). The NSF is a partnership between Bucks New University and Oxford &
Cherwell Valley College, based at the historic home of furniture, High Wycombe.
Makita’s power tools will be available for undergraduates of the BA (Hons) Furniture degree
courses from specially equipped workshops at the University. There will also be provision of
practical training sessions in the safe use and familiarisation of these high performance products
and technologies. Equally, workshop technicians at the University have an open invitation
to join Makita’s training centre at the Milton Keynes headquarters for training and
product evaluation of new power tool introductions.
The first event to mark the new relationship took place in June at the Bucks End of Year
Show 2013, a showcase for second and third year undergraduates of the furniture degree
courses to display a selection of outstanding projects, many of which have been three years
in the making. At this event the company sponsored the Makita Award for Design Innovation
2013, which will be made annually to the overall Winner and Runner Up at the Bucks End of
Year Show.
The judging was based on three specific criteria: the intelligent application of creative
thinking; appropriate use of materials and processes; skills in execution and manufacture of
the product. The overall winner of the Makita Award for Design Innovation was presented to
third year student, Tim King (pictured right), 22 years of age, of Lechlade, Gloucestershire,
who received a gift voucher to the value of £600 of Makita power tools.
Tim comments: “Winning the Makita Award has meant a huge amount to me, personally
and professionally. It has given me the confidence and knowledge that I can achieve a high
level of work and I hope my skills and hard work can be appreciated. Professionally it will
help as I now have an award-winning piece of furniture under my belt. I would not have been
able to afford these Makita tools and I’m really happy with what I have achieved as a designer
maker and grateful for the opportunity that Makita has given.”
The runner up award was made to second year student Ross Kinnaird (pictured below), 20
years of age, of Ashford, Kent, who received a gift voucher to the value of £300 of Makita
power tools.
Ross comments: “I started at the NSF in September 2011 on a full time
basis. This has allowed me to concentrate on developing my hand skills
more intensively which has given me a good base to prepare for my second
year. This year consisted of making a hall statement piece and a chair,
both firsts for me. These projects taught me many new techniques, such
as laminating using a vacuum bag, but also allowed me to speed up existing
traditional skills such as cutting joints and planing. I plan to try and
sell ‘Flo’, the hall statement piece. I have decided to keep the chair and
may well make another to keep as an example of my work.”
Mr Andrew Bowden, Technical Director, Makita International Europe,
says, “This is a very satisfactory relationship and Makita UK is delighted
and honoured to provide commercial support and sponsorship to the
furniture designers and makers of the future. We hope that this will be a
long and mutually rewarding relationship and our very best wishes and
congratulations go to those embarking on their professional career path.”
LIGNA REVIEW
Ligna orders for Combilift
WITH 15 EXHIBITS including world and European premieres of new models, there was
never a dull moment on the two Combilift stands at Ligna 2013.
Probably best known for its range of four-way forklifts and sideloaders with capacities
from 2.5 t upwards, the level of interest shown in Combilift’s latest and smallest model to
date shows that once again the company’s R&D department has tapped into even more market
potential.
The Combi-WR4 (Walkie Reach) is Combilift’s first multidirectional pedestrian truck, developed
in response to feedback from customers in the timber and DIY sector for a smaller
unit for handling loads of up to 1,450 kg. In areas where the general public or employees
may be present, it also offers a very safe way of handling loads such as packs of timber or laminate
as well as palletised goods in confined areas.
“We took an order for one of these trucks on the very first day of the show from a customer
who had not previously used any Combilift products, which neatly illustrates the potential
of the WR4 in this sector,” says managing director, Martin McVicar. “Overall, in a climate
where actual orders placed at trade fares are increasingly rare, we secured orders on each
day of the event from mainland Europe, Chile and Nigeria, for example.”
Vollmer recognised
THIS YEAR, Vollmer took part in
the Ligna international woodworking
fair in Hanover for the
20th time. For this reason, the
Swabian specialist for sharpening
and eroding machines was
honoured with a certificate and
a thank you speech. Vollmer
therefore ranks among the veterans
of Ligna and has been part
of every trade fair since 1975,
the year it was established.
“Vollmer is one of the few companies
to be represented at every
fair since Ligna began, says Alexander
Wurst, manager of the international
trade fairs division at
Deutsche Messe AG in Hanover.
“Over the decades, the loyalty and
dedication of the Swabian sharpening
specialist has contributed to the
success of the woodworking fair
and has fundamentally shaped it
and for that we warmly thank them.”
At Ligna, Alexander Wurst
handed over the ‘Certificate of Appreciation
to Sieglinde Vollmer, the
daughter of the company founder
and a member of Vollmer’s supervisory
board to this day, who
travelled specially to pick up the
certificate. Since 1975, the international
forestry and woodworking
fair has taken place in Hanover
every two years. As a specialist in
sharpening and eroding machines,
Vollmer uses Ligna to present the
latest technologies and services in
relation to the sharpening of band
and circular saws as well as PCD
(polycrystalline diamond) rotary
tools. This year, the focus was on
the new eroding machine QXD
250, with which PCD tools can be
produced up to 30% faster than
before.
Thanks to Ligna’s international
focus, the trade fair is the ideal
platform for Vollmer to speak directly
to its customers and partners
worldwide. 2013 was a
particularly successful fair for
Vollmer, as around 40% of the
trade visitors came from abroad. In
total, the fair included 90,000
trade visitors from 100 countries.
For Vollmer, the global expansion
of the business is of central importance
in order to continue to grow
in the future. The technology and
service company therefore boasts
over 30 sales locations worldwide
and has its own branches in a total
of 11 countries outside Germany:
these are located in Austria, Great
Britain, France, Italy, Poland, Spain,
the USA, Brazil, Japan, China and
The new four-wheeled two directional sideloader
was also a focal point for visitors, impressed with its
design features which counteract the problems of
overheating often found in other sideloader makes
when faced with long distance runs at high speed.
The by now familiar sight (and sound) of the
Combi-CB display team, manned this year by
brothers Sam and Josh Moffett, was a further attraction
on what was probably one of the busiest stands
in the outdoor area.
Martin McVicar adds: “Our success this year proves
that not only does Ligna remain one of the best international
events of its kind, but also that our tailor
made products are just what the timber sector
requires.”
“Ligna’s international character
was also reflected in the visitors to
our stand,” says Dr Stefan Brand,
managing director of the Vollmer
Group. “We had more guests from
all over the world than ever before,
particularly from North America
and Russia.”
concept: Leitz stand at Ligna in
Hall 12. (Photograph: Leitz.)
LEITZ presented six innovations
at Ligna this year and has
strengthened its internationally
leading market position with
significant after-fair business.
At Ligna 2013, Leitz exhibited
six innovative tooling solutions for
the wood, plastic and non-ferrous
metal processing industries.
Leitz’s concept for its two large
exhibition stands incorporated interactive
exhibits with touchscreens
to allow visitors to
experience the tools first hand and
provide clear information.
Sven Haag, head of central marketing
at Leitz, said: “Today, successful
manufacturing companies
depend on Leitz for efficient production
processes. We focus on suitable tool solutions and services for
our customers, making processes more intelligent.
“Ligna was a brilliant start to the second half of the year,” continued
Haag. “It was great to see how popular our product innovations and stand
presentations were with the visitors. According to the organisers, more
than 90,000 visitors from 100 countries came to Hannover during the
week and at peak times it seemed like most of them were on the Leitz
stands! There was also a noticeable good mood amongst the visitors.”
(Photograph: Leitz.)
Leitz presented six product innovations,
among them the coated
ProfilCut knives Marathon.
(Photograph: Leitz.)
The six innovations presented by Leitz
in Hannover have common strengths: all
increase process efficiency and quality.
For example: The Marathon coated Profil-Cut
knives for profiling furniture and
window components and plastic and
non-ferrous-metals yield significantly
higher performance times, increase machine
productivity, reduce tungsten carbide
consumption and decrease tooling
costs. The special profiling profiling technology
gives finish cut quality until the
end of the performance time. The other
Leitz innovations have similar performance
profiles.
Two videos have been uploaded to
LIGNA REVIEW
SCM’s design & technology features at Ligna
THE SCM Group’s exhibition
area at Hannover Ligna 2013
covered over 2,600 m 2 in three
halls. As usual, the SCM Group’s
stands were very busy for all five
days of the show with several
new machines and working cells
making their debuts.
From the “Housing” division
were technologies for those dealing
with house building and renovation
with new versions of the
“Accord” CNC Machining Centre
series for window frames, doors
and solid wood. Of particular interest
were the Dogma CNC
Angular Machining Centre for windows
and the powerful Superset
NT Planer Moulder.
For the first time at Ligna, the
SCM Group presented a number
of working cells or true “factories”.
Among these is the innovative cell
dedicated to the production of
window frames and solid wood
machining that is able to work
without operator supervision.
Accord WD, SCM’s machining
cell, revolutionises this trend. As
well as the advantages of high
productivity levels thanks to the
automatic loading and unloading
of work pieces, it maintains the
typical flexibility of a machining
centre without sacrificing anything
in terms of performance.
Manufacturing special windows
or other types of products is extremely
simple, because the cell is
fitted with the “Pro Speed” safety
system introduced on SCM’s latest
range of FX CNC machining
centres, which ensures access to
the worktable with manual loading
and unloading with the utmost
freedom of movement. The
possibility of pendulum machining
ensures that the productivity
is at the highest levels for this category
of machinery.
Three working cells were presented
by the “Furniture” division,
designed for a market now seeking
more integrated production
systems. Not to be missed was the
cutting cell shown by Gabbiani,
the boring cell from Morbidelli
and the “Easy Order AZ” from Stefani,
a “smart” one-batch edge
banding cell which checks a thousand
times per second all the operations
being carried out,
reaching unthinkable levels of efficiency
and versatility, whatever
the daily production volume, from
three kitchens to a living room or a
single shelf for furnishing an office
— using the “Easy Order AZ” is always
cost-effective.
The SCM Group has paid great
attention to the “historical” side of
things too, with the further evolution
of woodworking machines
and machines for customised production.
Some things that really
stood out were the latest innovations
on the Nova, Class and “L’Invincibile”
classical machine
ranges. The Nova saws now have a
larger and stronger squaring
frame with a wider roller and two
adjustable panel supports, a new
frame support and squaring fence
with new stops. The new SI 400 EP
Class Panel saw has three blade
speeds, a 50 mm parallel fence bar
and comes complete with “Ready”.
The new Tech Z1 Pro CNC machining
centre for drilling and profiling
offers a better performance
due to an increase in capacity with
a 180 mm component clearance
and a 250 mm stroke in the Z axis.
Several new edgebanders were
SCM Accord 20 FX
CNC Machining Centre
Stefani Easy Order
edgebanding line
SCM Profiset 60 planer moulder
making their debuts. The new
Olimpic K560 single-sided edgebander
is a compact and productive
edgebander designed to
operate for many hours/day with
a 16 m/min feed speed. It is a perfect
solution for all companies that
require high productivity when
edge banding a large number of
panels at the same time.
SCM was proud to present the
new Sandya 9S EVO Wide Belt
Sander that combines all the features
of a machine able to satisfy
all machining and sanding requirements,
obtaining high quality
results in a very short time.
SCM’s Profiset 60 planer moulder
is characterised by a sturdy
structure and the maximum versatility
and safety guaranteed in all
types of machining. Powerful, efficient
and linear feeding is ensured
by the gearbox feed drive system
and the Cardan joints combined
with the pneumatic pressure on
the feed rollers. Simple and intuitive
management of all machine
functions by means of the “Easy
Plus” electronic control with 7”
colour display.
From universal combined machines
to single-function machines,
Minimax offers products for
any panel or woodworking requirement.
The new “CLASSIC” series,
with a wide range of technological
accessories, improves and
customises the machine’s performance
for any machining requirement,
such as the digital
readout for the fence position for
parallel cuts that allows precise positioning
due to the use of the
magnetic strip sensor.
The Minimax Classic series includes
the incredible cutting of both
very thick solid wood and panels,
even those that are veneered, due
to the new saw unit with a blade
that has a maximum diameter of
315 mm with the scoring blade fitted.
Easy and more precise cutting
is possible due to a perfectly stable
support that is guaranteed, even for
large work pieces, by the wide sliding
table and the large squaring
frame with telescopic fence provided
as standard.
The SCM Group has developed
a number of “Save Energy” devices
including the consumption of
power, compressed air and dust
extraction systems on all their machines
for a “greener” factory environment,
including feed speed
controls and machines into “Stand
By” when not in use.
LIGNA REVIEW
Wood-Mizer unveils new sawmill products
WOOD-MIZER filled its stand at
Ligna with so many new and
popular products that the company
had to reserve more space
than ever before at Ligna 2013.
Wood-Mizer’s orange line of
personal and professional saw -
mills drew continuous attention.
Wood-Mizer’s LT70 sawmill is a
popular choice among professional
sawmillers who process logs
into green lumber in high output,
and like all Wood-Mizer equipment,
the LT70 features narrow
band blades that remove minimal
kerf, resulting in maximum yield
from every log. Computer setworks
and hydraulic log handling
make sawing lumber with the
LT70 an efficient process that is
easy on the body.
The LT20B and the LT15
sawmills, two of Wood-Mizer’s
smaller mills, are designed to be
economical solutions for smaller
enterprises. The LT15 was featured
at the show with a new
planer/moulder head option. This
new option allows an end user to
turn a rough log into a finished
planed or moulded beam, without
ever having to remove the log
from the machine.
The premier new product exhibited
at Ligna was the new small log
processing line (SLP II) that generated
great interest from visitors
who attended from around the
world. The SLP II has been redesigned
to provide enterprises
that have an excess of small logs
with a more effective, efficient and
profitable system for utilising them.
Dozens of SLP installations around
the world are proving their effectiveness
daily, and the new SLP II
offers even more benefits — only
two or three workers are needed to
run the system, waste is removed
at all points in the line, and the
whole line is operated from one
central command console.
Also debuted at the show was a
yet unnamed wide band sawmill
that represents a first for Wood-
Mizer — larger capacity, wide-band
machines. This heavy duty sawmill
was well received by attendees to
the show. According to Wood-
Mizer, the project was developed in
cooperation with a well-known
and highly respected European
wide band sawmill manufacturer.
Wood-Mizer plans to have this
model on the market in 2014. It
runs a 90 mm (3.5”) band blade,
and can cut a 900 mm (36”) log in
half. Bed capacity is rated at 4 tons.
Yet more advancements were
displayed in Wood-Mizer’s Blades
tent, where a new line of sawmill
blade sharpeners and tooth setters
were unveiled. The range of
models are designed to meet the
needs of the professional wood
producer, down to the needs of
the small scale enterprise. As the
wood products industry looks for
ways to increase profitability,
Wood-Mizer is offering more and
more products designed to help
businesses meet these goals.
LIGNA REVIEW
Weinig at Ligna: Innovative technology
for sustainable solid wood processing
IN KEEPING with the slogan
WEINIG WORKS WOOD, Weinig
was in Hanover to exhibit innovative
production technology with
which wood processors will be
able to produce cost-effectively
and profitably in the future.
Weinig’s core expertise of planing
and profiling puts the spotlight
on modern processing
technology, which can achieve
significant savings, increase timber
yield and open up new markets.
The Powermat series,
exhibited in full with the 600,
1200, 2400 and 2500 models, offers
an ideal platform in this area.
The entire range is equipped
with the PowerLock tool system,
that minimises set-up times while
ensuring excellent surface quality
at a wide variety of feed speeds.
Weinig also took the tried and
tested Powermat 600 to Hanover
to demonstrate reliable and precise
processing of short parts. The
machine is equipped with a
groove guide for this purpose.
The Powermat 1200 offers a
range of options and is therefore
suited to a wide variety of profiles.
The outstanding feature of the
machine at Ligna is the new
PowerCom PLUS controls which,
together with Power Set, ensures
quick and precise set-up of even
complex profiles via six CNC-controlled
axes.
The brand-new Moulder Master
software (illustrated) celebrates its
world premier via this demonstration.
The Moulder Master combines
all processes upstream of
production. The software enables
profile and tool drawings to be
created in a CAD interface and efficient
management of data
records. The paperless throughfeed
also offers complete process
reliability.
Also in Hanover was the newest
version of the Weinig 3D structuring,
which can create almost any
customised surface using Alpha-
Cam CAD software. Flexibility is
further increased via the router
and the fact that the structuring
spindles can be moved across the
entire working width. The new,
electronically controlled EM 100
magazine provides for continuous,
gapless charging of the Powermat
2400. The charging speed is automatically
harmonised with the
planing machine and the feed
force is set in accordance with the
workpiece size.
The Powermat 2500 represents
the top-of-the-range model in its
performance category and is designed
for planing lamellae at feed
speeds of up to 300 m/min. Heavy
steel pressure elements above, 30°
angled spindles below and above
as well as weight reducing floating
spindles left and right provide for
maximum wood yield.
The new Conturex 125 Vario (illustrated,
top) shows just how
user-friendly full production of
large-scale elements can be and
the profitability and productivity
that makes this possible.
The single-portal machine,
which is equipped on both sides,
has five-axis technology and is designed
for double part processing.
This allows part lengths of up to
1,600 mm to be produced with
tear-free joint technology.
Minimised tool changing times
and an optimised process sequence
increase performance by up to 20
per cent. The patented Weinig
PowerGrip single-clamp table enables
optimal precision via complete
processing of workpieces in a
single clamping operation. A refeed
unit and sophisticated energy management
make the Conturex 125
Vario a pioneering development in
terms of resource efficiency.
Weinig demonstrated the broad
range of applications for the new
machine at Ligna, including the
production of the IV78 window
system, rabbet joints, round arch
and older design with separation
of glazing beads as well as studio
windows. The Conturex 125 Vario
can also produce a range of other
products, such as conservatories,
house doors and furniture parts.
Weinig exhibited what is believed
to be the world’s first fullyautomated
pre-cutting system in
Hanover in OptiLink, the Weinig
software solution for 2D optimisation.
The line includes a Combi-
Scan+ R 200 scanner for ripsawing
and cutting, a ProfiRip 450 Speed
optimising circular saw and an
OptiCut 450 FJ+ III high-speed optimising
cross-cut saw with ST 10-
1500 automatic stacker. The entire
system is connected via the Opti -
Link software, which was initially
presented as a concept in 2011
and now comes to the market as a
solution for the networked production
process of production
lines with several scanners.
The compact combi-solution
with EasyScan scanner and OptiCut
200 Elite optimising circular saw
celebrated its trade fair premiere.
The system is Weinig’s standard solution
for simple applications in rip
optimising. OptiCom Direct enables
the system to be consistently
operated and controlled.
The new OptiCut S 90 XL Super-
Drill pushfeed saw combines the
work processes of cutting, drilling
and milling in a single machine.
The integrated drilling/milling unit
allows additional vertical drilling or
transverse milling to be performed
on the workpiece before cross-cutting.
Four design versions were
available for the product launch.
Weinig also used Ligna to present
what is believed to be the
fastest compact finger jointing
line on the market in the glulam
production segment.
The new PowerJoint 8 allows
timber with up to eight connections
to be centrally milled and
pressed per minute. With additional
models, such as the Profijoint,
Ultra and Turbo-S with
dividing saw, Weinig covers a
broad spectrum of finger-jointing
lines that cater equally for newcomers
to wood finishing and industrial
operators with high
capacities.
LIGNA REVIEW
Successful Ligna experience for Kündig
KÜNDIG AG reports an extremely
successful experience at
Ligna 2013, with the latest innovative
technology attracting
considerable attention and with
the promise of more to come in
the future.
Kündig UK’s Carl O’Meara spent
time on the Swiss sanding specialist’s
stand, having primary responsibility
to meet and greet visitors
from the UK and see how Kündig
can assist in their machining requirements,
and also to work as
part of the Kündig team, in Carl’s
words, “to ensure that people do
not get neglected when they visit
the stand, however busy it is”.
Carl reports that the Kündig
stand was so busy that there were
occasions when all twelve sales
staff were demonstrating machines
to potential customers, so
all that he could do was arrange
meetings or take business cards
from interested parties, so that the
sales team could follow them up
in due course.
Carl adds, “My personal observation
was that a lot of visitors to
the stand looked first at the performance
of the machines and
what they could achieve: only afterwards
did they look at the
price.” He reports considerable interest
from continental Europe in
Kündig’s offering, as well as from
further afield, for example Libya,
Afghanistan, Cameroon and India:
“they came to the show, and to the
stand, from every continent in the
world”.
Visitors showed particular interest
in the Brilliant wide-belt
sanders (at least one of which was
sold off the stand) and in the
demonstration using a purposely
damaged sanding belt to show oscillation
marks when straight line
sanding: then, by simply placing
the same sanding head to give
a shear cut, these marks simply
disappear.
It was the Technic Precision that
had been “under wraps” before the
show. Carl comments, “There is no
machine like it for the way it is
constructed, the way it works and
the accuracy it gives”.
During Ligna, the Technic Precision
was demonstrated sanding
raw veneer to a calibrated thickness
of 0.4 mm. The sander offers
an accuracy of 0.02 mm and can
be utilised on various materials either
fed sheet by sheet or from a
roll, including composites, veneers,
aluminium, high pressure
laminates, duroplastics, cork fibreglass,
carbon fibre, honeycomb,
rubber and insulation, and serves
a wide range of industries.
In addition to the Technic Flash
for the edge-sanding market, the
Technic is offered in three widebelt
configurations: the Technic
Precision, the Technic BOTOP and
the Technic CNC. The range offers
bespoke machines designed to
meet individual manufacturers’
specific needs, making it hard to
describe a typical Technic machine.
Options available include
top and bottom sanding systems
with two to six units (or more if required),
extra large machines for
panel manufacturers, special machines
for processing plywood,
cutterheads, and machines designed
to work with very thin material,
ideal for those working with
laminates.
The Swiss-based parent company
reports that, due to the excellent
reputation that Kündig has
built up over the decades, it regularly
receives enquiries concerning
potential applications for which
there is no pre-existing machinebased
solution. Kündig welcomes
such enquiries, which allow its engineers
to demonstrate their creativity
and innovative way of
thinking, as well as the quality of
the Kündig range.
The Brilliant wide-belt sanders
come in four designs, numbered 1,
2, 3 or 4, depending on the number
of sanding heads, and can be
equipped for solid wood, veneer
or lacquer sanding. Designed so
that it is the sanding group that
raises and lowers rather than the
workpiece, the Brilliant range can
be supplied in a wide range of
configurations to suit individual
customer needs, coming with a
standard working height of 3-200
mm and being available in working
widths of 1,100 mm, 1,350 mm
and (2, 3 or 4 only) 1,600 mm and
wider upon request (Kündig has
built a number of machines with a
2,200 mm working width).
As well as the Technic, the edge
sanding range from Kündig includes
the Uniq, Uniq-S and Basiq,
offering a variety of options to
meet all edge sanding needs including
high gloss requirements.
Carl O’Meara returned from
Ligna very positive about the demand
on the Continent for
Kündig’s range of quality sanders,
commenting that it was “A very rewarding
show”, and adding that
he is looking forward to the next
set of innovations that will be
emerging from the Kündig stable.
He adds, “Although the presence
from the UK was less than
from other European countries,
the quality of the enquiries received
was high,” and he is looking
forward to sharing with British
customers “the secret of quality
sanding that is so well known and
appreciated on the Continent.”
melt edgebanders were exhibited
at this year’s show. Available
through leading supplier Ney Ltd,
the top-of-the-range machines
have been cleverly designed to
edging. The Rapid also offers
10-25 m/min processing time,
automatic gluing and multi-coils.
Fravol’s Fusion system can also be
added, enabling laser edgebanding
materials to be used without
the cost of a laser.
Leading manufacturer of machines
and automatic horizontal
