SAWS IN ALL SHAPES & SIZES
Opticut benefits enhance Turner’s services
E W TURNER & Company Ltd, a
small pallet and packing case
manufacturer in the West Midlands,
provide proof of the benefits
of a Weinig CNC OptiCut
optimising cross-cut saw, which
the company had installed a
year ago.
Packing case and pallet manufacturers
perhaps gain the most,
because crosscutting is a major
part of their production process,
but every type of manufacturer —
furniture and joinery — can enjoy
even more benefits: Increasing
production efficiency, speeding
up response to the customer, making
more savings in waste by optimising,
increasing yield and
improving profitability, are just
some. The more the timber
throughput is, the greater the
profit achievable.
E W Turner was established in
1854 in West Bromwich. The company
specialises in the manufacture
of bespoke pallets, packing
cases and plywood boxes, for export
worldwide.
Eighty percent of products are
bespoke, so modern machining
methods became essential to remain
competitive and meet the
demand for faster deliveries and a
growing order book. The company,
therefore, invested in the
highly reputed Weinig OptiCut optimising
cross cut saw, to replace
some of the five manual cross cuts.
The company have since realised
considerable benefits.
The managing director of Turners
is Nick Clarke. Nick was a footballer
in his early days and played
centre back for Wolverhampton
Wanderers, but injury forced him
to retire from football. He then
worked in the woodworking industry
and steadily gained considerable
experience. He was well
known in the Midlands due to his
football fame and worked as a
sales representative for Turners for
four years. Later, he set up his own
successful company, Mercia Contracts,
but after a period of time
Turners, who had the advantage
of being better know for over a
century, made him an attractive
offer to join them as Sales Director.
The installation of the Weinig
OptiCut CNC cross cut saw, S 50,
has ensured faster and higher production
and replaced three of five
manual cross cuts, with spare capacity.
Turners still uses the two
manual saws but only for a few very
special jobs. The OptiCut is safer,
easier to use and much less tiring
for operators — precluding the
need to lift heavy timber. It is faster
and easier to change over jobs and
is ideal for ‘one off’ production.
Turners now meets all its orders
without having to work overtime.
Turners has their own fleet of lorries for despatching countrywide.
David Sandland, Production Manager (right) talking to Dean
Grimbley, local Weinig representative.
Said Nick Clarke, “We definitely
would not have been able to meet
the increased number of orders on
time, if it wasn’t for the OptiCut. And
it has attracted more orders. We
have the confidence of knowing
that we have the spare capacity to
fit in urgent new jobs at any time.”
Nick adds, “It’s highly flexible,
and is able to cut 250 mm short
pieces up to 2 m lengths in singles
or packs. Setting time is negligible
and eliminates human error. Accuracy
is guaranteed to 0.5 mm. It is
a powerful saw and can cut 4 x 4
timber, with up to 40% moisture
content on home grown timber,
like cutting through butter. I can’t
fault it. We have had the machine
for a year now and never had a
problem — it’s so reliable.”
Production manager, David
Sandland, says, “Since we installed
the OptiCut, we are able to product
75 m 3 per week (6 packs per
day) and still have spare capacity.
We can guarantee a 24 hour turn
round, and pallets that would
have taken us two hours to produce
we can now do in twenty
minutes.”
