Power Capacitors to the rescue!
POWER CAPACITORS Ltd featured
on Grand Designs, broadcast on
Channel 4 on 19 September 2012.
The programme featured Celia
and Diana and their plans to build a
state-of-the-art home from scratch
on a plot of land in Hertfordshire.
The couple decided to pioneer
an entirely new way of building
and construct what is believed to
be the world’s first computer-cut
house, acting as guinea pigs for a
team of young industrial designers
from London who came up
with a complex yet simple to
assemble structure.
The centrepiece of the build
process is the Facit Mobile Production
Facility (pictured). This
“workshop in a container” is believed
to be the first of its kind
anywhere in the world, allowing
the whole structure to be produced
and assembled on site
(small team, low overheads, high
output) — “the facility just keeps
rolling until we have enough to
keep us busy for a day, or until it
stops raining!”
However, few sites have access
to mains 415 V 3-phase power —
this site in Hertfordshire was no
exception.
Bruce Bell at Facit Homes contacted
Power Capacitors Ltd who
provided a TRANS WAVE Rotary
Converter to facilitate the operation
of the Multicam CNC router
equipment including a large vacuum
pump from the single phase
240 V mains supply.
This was achieved at a fraction
of the cost of the installation of a
3-phase supply or an alternative
generator option.
The build was completed inside
seven months. The Mobile Production
Facility has since moved
on to the next site.
What’s in a name? Plenty, says Norbord!
NORBORD, a leading panel products manufacturer,
has relaunched its MDF range with new
product names designed to help customers
choose the right board for their requirements —
quickly and easily.
The new range offers the same variety of high quality
boards yet these are now grouped logically into
just three basic lines so that the purchaser can identify
the best board for specific requirements: Caberwood
MDF Trade, Caberwood MDF Pro and Caberwood
MDF Industrial MR.
MDF is one of the most widely-used materials in interior
fit-out, general building and furniture manufacture.
Made from wood fibres bonded together in a
resin matrix, its fine, even texture and excellent workability
make it ideal for many applications traditionally
calling for natural wood.
Norbord currently produces three basic types of
MDF, ranging from a lightweight general purpose
board through to a relatively high-density grade designed
for use in manufactured components.
Previously marketed at “Light”, “Standard” or “Deep
Rout”, these three basic lines were further supplemented
with “Moisture Resistant” (MR), “Moisture
Resistant Light” and “Industrial MR”.
“The new structure means that the focus of the
three new names is on typical end users, not the MDF
grade. Ease of selection for the end-user was our
objective,” explains Norbord regional sales manager,
David Webb.
“Trade” is a term widely used to describe products
designed for general use by tradesmen carrying out a
range of small building works.
The term “Pro” or “Professional” is widely used to denote
professional carpenters and joiners who specialise
in high-end applications such as interior fit-out
work. They will be using Caberwood MDF on a daily
basis, procuring their supplies through both builders’
and timber merchants.
“Industrial” indicates the suitability of the product
for use as a stock material in a manufacturing process.
Caberwood MDF Industrial is, therefore, aimed at
manufacturers of doors, furniture, architectural
mouldings and other added-value products which
involve extensive machining and the application of
specialist surface finishes.
American Softwoods launches new species brochure
AMERICAN Softwoods has published a new brochure to provide
importers, architects and specifiers with information on the
range and diversity of American softwood species, and which
are best suited to a wide variety of different applications.
A Guide to American Softwood Species presents details of the
botanical name, properties and uses of the commercially important
American softwood species. Physical and mechanical
properties are described and each species is given a durability
rating according to BS EN 350-1 (European Durability Classes).
Architects and structural engineers can also refer to tables
which list and compare mechanical properties, such as the
specific gravity, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity
and compressive strength of American softwood species
with the properties of European species such as Scots pine
(Pinus sylvestris), Whitewood (Picea abies) and Sitka spruce
(Picea sitchensis). Southern Yellow Pine and Douglas fir perform
particularly well on these measures.
As well as better known species, the new guide to
American softwood species also lists and describes less
common species such as Engelmann spruce, California
redwood, Alaska cedar and Incense cedar.
The brochure is an indispensable aid for importers
and specifiers when choosing timber from what is believed
to be the world’s largest producer of sustainable
softwoods. Renowned for their strength and beauty,
American softwoods are harvested from sustainably
managed forests. Every year 1.6 billion seedlings are
planted in the US — the equivalent of 4.4 million
trees every single day of the year. As a result, America’s
forests currently produce over 80 million cubic
metres of sawn timber a year, but the success of its
forest management and conservation has ensured
that forested land is now greater than it was 75
years ago, and is increasing year on year.
The carbon sequestration during each tree’s
growth more than offsets the total combined
emissions from harvesting, processing and
even transport of the timber to the EU from the
US. American softwoods also offer a sustainable, fast growing
and, when pressure treated, durable alternative to much more expensive
tropical hardwoods, which can take three times as long to mature.
Six more Combilifts
for James Latham
JAMES LATHAM started to introduce
Combilift 4-way forklifts
into its depots over ten years
ago when it decided to replace a
combination of sideloaders and
counterbalance trucks to
achieve better storage density
and improve overall handling
procedures.
The initial projects were so successful
that Combilifts are now
Latham’s preferred trucks, with
around 50 in operation at the
company’s 10 sites across the
country. The latest addition is a
fleet of six 4 tonne machines for
the newly opened Leeds depot.
With a footprint of 69,000 ft, the
Leeds depot is slightly smaller
than the former Ossett site, but an
impressive 39% more storage
space has been achieved.
“The key element for the extra
capacity was the ability to store
the whole of our wide product
range as high as possible,” says director,
Andrew Wright, “and close
collaboration with Combilift’s
Tommy Cadden and the company’s
design engineers, racking
provider Stakapal and Latham personnel
such as Andy Duffin enabled
us to realise this by installing
the top beam of racking to 9.3 m,
the highest at any of our depots.
“Guided aisle systems have also
enabled us to
keep aisle widths
at a minimum in
certain areas of
the warehouse to
further maximise
available space.”
James Latham
has a standard
specification for
its Combilifts —
the C4000 4
tonne capacity
LPG powered
model, which enables
trucks to be
moved around
from one depot
to another if
necessary.
Due to the demands
of lifting
full loads to the
top bay of racking
it was initially
thought that
larger trucks
would be needed
for this particular
application, but
Combilift engineers incorporated
extra capacity into the Leeds
trucks, which have a 9.3 m mast
height, whilst maintaining the
same physical dimensions as the
rest of the fleet.
The combination of guide rails
fitted to aisles and rollers on the
trucks offer the advantages of
quicker access and travel down
the aisles for drivers as well as a
greatly reduced risk of product
damage. Combilift and Stakapal
came up with a new system to replace
the traditional steel elements
with new style larger
dia meter polyurethane rollers and
rubber mounted lead-in sections
which improves shock absorption,
reduces steel on steel wear and
which also results in much quieter
operation.
Other features on the Combilifts
include hydraulically operated
fork positioners for easy
in-cab adjustment to handle the
varying sizes of panel products
and packs of timber, and telescopic
forks have been fitted to
some of the trucks for manoeuvering
larger panels with a depth
of 2,050 mm.
CNC MACHINERY & EQUIPMENT
Creative diversity from Weinig with structured surfaces
WHETHER for interior fittings,
furniture or the external sector,
structured surfaces for solid
wood are in fashion.
This opens up a lucrative business
area for wood processing
companies. Profitable production
is best achieved when value enhancement
is generated as an additional
benefit on a universal
machine and, as a pioneer in structured
planing, Weinig has already
laid down the blueprint for how
this can work. Now, with the new
generation of technology, Weinig
is going on the offensive once
again. Besides the renowned functionality
in S4S planing and profiling,
the Powermat 1200 and 2400
models now offer the customer
two options for the creation of
structured surfaces.
The first option allows “random”
structures to be produced, whose
finish resembles “hand-scrubbed”
panels or boards. A wave-like surface
is created using oscillating
spindles at a feed speed of up to
100 rpm. Processing is performed
in a single pass. Decisive influencing
factors are the shape of the
profile knife, the range of travel of
the spindles and the oscillation
speed. Multiple oscillation is also
possible in a single pass to create a
very lively and diverse surface finish.
The axial and radial structuring
motion of the spindles is controlled
via special software by random
generator. The principal
applications are flooring and furniture
production. However, a further
area of application is interior
fittings, eg for wall cladding or exposed
beams. “The random structuring
is working completely
reliably for many customers but
we are not resting on our laurels,”
says Peter Martin, technical director
of the profiling product division
for Weinig.
With 3D structuring, Weinig
presents a second stage of development,
which significantly expands
possibilities for the customer
yet further. Building upon
random structuring, the 3D version
enables any three-dimensional
structure to be
programmed freely. The technology
allows both the design of creative
decor by the wood
processing company itself as well
as problem-free production of individual
designs according to customer
requests. In addition,
technical parts can be produced
to high precision specifications.
Previously, this would have required
special machines and the
use of special tools, such as immersion
spindles. Thanks to 3D
structuring, there is now universal,
freely programmable technology
available. Peter Martin: “We are
looking here at the elite class of
surface structuring, which is now
almost without limits.” There is no
restriction on the length of the
workpiece to be processed. The
3D structure is programmed using
Excel, which can be undertaken either
by the customer or by Weinig
itself.
The 3D structures are based
upon special, precise measuring
systems that measure the start
Diversity of design thanks to freely programmable structures.
Ideal basis for surface structuring:
The new Weinig Powermat models 1200 and 2400.
Structured workpiece in a single pass via random generator.
and end of the workpiece prior to
chip removal. Only then is a controlled
transition possible between
smoothly planed and
contoured surfaces. The tools used
are multi-toothed, CNC-controlled
cutters that move axially at a
speed of 30 rpm and radially at 15
rpm. The production speed is dependent
on the complexity of the
structures and tolerances of the
workpiece to be observed. As with
random structuring, processing is
performed in a single pass.
Among the many benefits of
Weinig 3D structuring is the fact
that the same materials can be
processed as on a customary planing
and profiling machine. “Even
MDF and plastic are no problem,”
underlines Peter Martin. Furthermore,
no difficult clamping of the
workpiece is required by the operator.
It simply has to be fed into
the machine, which safely accepts
and guides it. 3D profiling is also
impressive in terms of cost-effectiveness.
Thanks to the throughfeed
technology, an impressive
processing speed is achieved
when it comes to producing large
volumes. Conversely, small batch
sizes and even individual pieces
can be produced without a problem.
If you add in the higher
automation potential of the automatic
moulder, the benefits for
productivity are significant. The
versatility of the machine configuration
means that the technology
can also be easily integrated into
existing production lines.
Thus Weinig technology not
only ensures the investor’s competitiveness
via a new, sought
after application. The universal
machine also means a company is
best equipped for the requirements
of the traditional market.
Whether planing and profiling,
random structuring or creative,
controlled diversity — flexibility is
the outstanding feature of the
Weinig solution. And if the trend
for structured surfaces establishes
itself further, there is an additional
option: A Weinig Powermat 1200
or 2400 as an auxiliary machine for
pure structuring.
Euroskills wood event benefits from Alphacam and Proteus
EUROPE’S leading event for promoting
vocational trades and
crafts to young people relied on
the Alphacam CNC software and
its Benelux reseller, Proteus, in
the Woodcrafting Technology
competition.
Alphacam donated free licences
to the nine competitors in
Euroskills 2012’s wood machining
event, while Proteus set the CNC
part of the competiton and drew
up training modules for it.
Proteus sales manager, Henk
van Heuveln, says: “Euroskills is extremely
important for the future of
craftsmanship and trades
throughout Europe.” Over 450
youngsters were involved in more
than 40 skills-based events including
CNC machining, hair dressing,
plumbing, cooking, website design,
electrical installation, landscape
gardening, bricklaying and
roadbuilding.
The competitors in the wood
event had to create a cabinet,
which included working with
Alphacam and a CNC router, to
produce an insert panel containing
the word ‘Euroskills’ and the
The task was to create a cabinet in wood, utilising both a CNC router
and Alphacam, complete with an inset panel including the word
The Alphacam training provided
by Proteus ahead of the were surprised how well the
Henk van Heuveln says Proteus
competition consisted of four youngsters worked with Alphacam
and how much knowledge
modules, Drawing, Editing, Art
and a final tutorial and exercise they had of it during the competition.
“Maybe this is because it is so
comprising all three aspects.
It included modelling, geo-
easy to learn how to use the software
effectively. Their initial
knowledge of Alphacam varied
considerably; for one competitor it
was part of his schooling, but another
hadn’t used it at all.
“We’re glad to say the results of
the competition were very good,
with above average marks.”
As part of its sponsorship of the
wood event, Alphacam donated licences
to the competitors — who
came from Hungary, The Netherlands,
Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia,
Slovenia, Spain, Latvia and Portugal
— so they could practise programming
and machining, and
then continue using the the software
after Euroskills.
“There were many extremely
favourable comments about
Alphacam during the competition,”
says Henk van Heuveln. “The
Woodcrafting Technology event
was particularly attractive to
watch — it was very lively and dynamic,
and drew a lot of attention
from visitors.”
ToughPly: the tougher choice
COILLTE Panel Products has launched SmartPly ToughPly: a fully certified, legal and sustainable
OSB3 alternative to tropical plywood. The new general builders’ board provides a
solution for a variety of applications such as roofing, sheathing and boarding. The product
can even be used where a structural solution is required by the building regulations.
ToughPly, which is a double-sided, pre-coated structural OSB3 panel, is sanded and finished
on both sides. The product’s coating allows considerable time saving onsite since it can be
painted directly with no further surface preparation. As with all panels in the SmartPly range,
ToughPly panels are manufactured in accordance with EN 300, which confirms the pro duct’s attention
to quality and detail. This allows the panels, which are easy to cut, plane, route and
work with, to be nailed as close as 10 mm from the edge, with no risk of splintering or failure.
Smartply understands the importance of legality and sustainable compliance when it
comes to wood products. ToughPly importantly with all new legislation for wood-based
panel products including forthcoming legislation such as the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR).
The EUTR will mean that, as of March 2013, it will be illegal to buy or sell illegally harvested
timber and wood products. It will therefore be paramount that products have full documentation,
in the form of a paper trail, to prove where the timber was sourced from originally,
providing a history that traces the timber all the way from its harvesting, through the production and handling process, to reaching the merchant
branch. This documentation will need to carry not only the FSC stamp, but also an FSC Chain of Custody number, which should be kept by the contractor
to show to the end client to reassure them of the legality and sustainability
of the timber.
BBA assessment received
As with all SmartPly panels, the timber used in the manufacture of
ToughPly is sourced from the company’s own FSC-certified forests with
fully audited chain of custody. This gives merchants, DIY retailers and
builders the reassurance that the product will provide a fully documented
and reliable specification alternative to tropical plywood products in structural
applications. As such, ToughPly meets the requirements of the EUTR.
In structural applications, ToughPly also fulfils all the legal requirements
where the building regulations call for materials to be tested for
durability, strength and loading in structural applications. It is also fully
tested in accordance with EN 13986 and bears the CE mark to verify this.
MANUFACTURED TO THE HIGHEST STANDARD
FOR PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY
COILLTE Panel Product’s Medite
Tricoya has now received a
British Board of Agrément (BBA)
assessment. The extremely
durable MDF can be specified
with confidence.
Medite Tricoya benefits from
the latest advancements in acetylation
technology, which naturally
alters the wood’s chemical structure
so that water absorption does
not affect it. This results in a more
dimensionally stable MDF meaning
it won’t swell, shrink or decay
— making it extremely durable. It
is also incredibly versatile — it can
be cut, coated, coloured, sanded,
glued, machined and fastened.
The assessment report, which is
recognised by building control, government
departments, architects,
local authorities, specifiers and industry
insurers such as the NHBC,
confirms that the product is fit for
purpose. The BBA’s impartial and unbiased
information on the performance
of the product complements
Medite Tricoya’s own technical data.
In order to achieve the assessment,
the product successfully
passed a comprehensive review of
the testing co-ordinated by the
Building Research Establishment
(BRE), on-site evaluations and inspections.
The manufacturing
process was also audited to ensure
that a suitable quality management
system is in place. Regular
monitoring of the manufacture of
Medite Tricoya will also take place
twice a year by the BBA with a full
and comprehensive reassessment
every three years.
“Gaining the BBA assessment
has really underpinned the high
quality and durability characteristics
of Medite Tricoya. It’s a great
achievement and gives our customers
peace of mind that the
product will deliver on expectations,”
Latest laminate collection goes on parade
ABET LAMINATI has introduced
the Parade Collection,
created by Giulio
Iacchetti. This is an innovative
and quirky range of 12
digitally printed laminate
decors each available in
three colour shades.
Parade is made up of two
major groups of decors. One
comes from the study of six
different units developed
through a strong digital
approach.
The other is the result of
freehand drawings subsequently
scanned and
processed in order to complete
the graphics of the entire
laminate panel.
Each decor effect is rich in
purpose and is designed to
cross bi-dimensional boundaries to achieve a well-rooted third dimension.
The six digital-age inspired decors are entitled ‘The Moduli family’ and
include Tartan, Fishbone, Rockets, Paesemio, Knock-Out and Artichoke
while the ‘Fatto A Mano family’ includes Furrows, Betulla, Yayoi, Massaua,
Derby and Canvas.
Paesemio, for example, depicts small white houses clinging to the
sides of an imaginary hill creating
a sea of roofs, doors and
windows. This is a tribute to
the Italian landscape dotted
with many such small villages
and celebrated in a popular
Italian song.
Fishbone is a suitably
schematised and simplified
fishbone which gives life to a
graphic design of both iconic
and ironic impact. Yayoi, on
the other hand, is the name of
the Japanese artist whose signature
style is represented by
polka dots. In this graphic, the
dots give life to a type of chromatic
projection obtained by
the superimposition of different
coloured ink drops.
The versatile and unique
Parade Collection has been realised
using ABET’s digital printing technology. It reaffirms the important
link between the company’s corporate philosophy of working with some
of the world’s best designers and its design-led approach to the manufacture
of high pressure laminates.
New training courses from Cabinet Vision
LEADING manufacturing software
for cabinets and casegoods,
Cabinet Vision, is
launching three new advanced
training courses in the autumn.
Looking in detail at the Screen-
To-Machine, the Bid Centre, and
CAD title blocks and drawings, the
new courses are aimed at helping
users manage their software without
having to dip into its extensive
helpfiles or contact the support
team.
They will form part of Cabinet
Vision’s wider training strategy,
which includes elearning courses,
webinars, esupport forum and the
global support portal. The subjects
are also included as bitesized
tasters in Cabinet Vision’s
basic course, but a survey, run by
Business Manager Marie Cassidy
among customers, highlighted
the three topics as a priority for additional,
advanced training.
“The basic course explains the
software’s broad aspects, then we
provide more specific, customised
training for each customer during
installation and integration, along
with giving additional training on
a consultancy basis where required.
This new training will help
customers use Cabinet Vision to
take their business to the next
level much quicker than at the
moment.”
Elearning
A number of self-pace elearning
courses are geared towards advanced
users. Subjects include
how to produce perfect rendering,
User Created Standards, and the
Bid Centre showing the best way
to price materials and jobs. “Customers
download any of the six
courses from the Cabinet Vision
website, and can learn at their
own pace, at any time they
choose.”
Webinars
Following the success of Cabinet
Vision’s popular webinars in the
United States, they were launched
in the UK in the Spring. The hourlong
sessions are held every fortnight,
each covering a particular
feature or aspect in detail. Recent
topics include how to back up and
restore data, how to transfer data
from one computer to another,
and Advanced CAD and drawing
templates. Delegates watch the
live presentation on their computer
screen, and have the opportunity
to ask questions via the
phone link.
“All aspects of our training combine
to put users in total control of
their software, enabling them to
get the very best out of it.”
Global Support Portal and
esupport
The Global Support Portal is a twoway
communication channel. As
well as customers logging requests
for support — of which 84
per cent currently receive an initial
response within an hour and 55
per cent are actually resolved
within three hours — they can
also use the portal to access helpfiles
and upgrades.
“Around 30 per cent of customers
use it regularly for all its
functionality, while a further 15
per cent download builds of the
software and documentation but
prefer to log support cases by telephone,”
says Marie Cassidy. “It
gives customers greater flexibility
to do what they want, when they
want — they have 24-hour access
for logging calls, downloading
software and finding information.”
Esupport is Cabinet Vision’s fastgrowing
online community, now
with more than 9,500 users
around the world. Queries are
logged on the forum and can be
answered from anywhere in the
world by other users who have resolved
the issue. The queries range
from simple design questions,
through to technical aspects.
“Another user provides the answer
almost every time, but if it
hasn’t been resolved within an
hour, then technical support staff
who monitor the forum from the
UK and USA will log a response to
ensure the service remains instantaneous.”
Celebrating 60 years of Weinig ExpoCenter
THIS YEAR, Weinig looks back on
an event that is inseperable
from the meteoric rise of the
company since World War 2: the
foundation of the ExpoCenter.
With its permanent exhibition,
Weinig created a central location
for its ever-increasing international
customer base, where its entire
range of machines and production
lines for solid wood processing
were available at any time. Even
back then, it was clear that a premium
product requiring intensive
consultation needed to be demonstrated
in operation. It was also essential
to make the fascination of
Weinig production technology tangible,
to substantiate the promise
that “Weinig offers more”.
Sixty years on, the exhibition has
long since become an institution
under the name “ExpoCenter”. The
facility brings professional visitors
from all over the world to Tauberbischofsheim.
Since its beginnings,
some 60,000 interested parties
have attended demonstrations at
the ever-expanding installation.
Many become fervent Weinig customers
who return again and again.
There are many reasons for the
incredible impact of the Expo -
Center. The primary reason is the
opportunity for the customer to
experience processing “live” via
the individual application as if it
were in their own factory. They can
even bring their own materials for
this purpose. However, there is another
secret to the success: “The
entire concept wins people over,”
says Klaus Müller, who has observed
developments for over 40
years and was formerly responsible
for the ExpoCenter before becoming
Head of Marketing and
Communication for Weinig. By ‘entire
concept’, he means the combination
of the exhibition, training
The Weinig ExpoCenter today.
centre and production plant. Visitors
to Tauberbischofsheim not
only see the latest production
technology in action but can gain
an insight into how premium
providers Weinig work during a
tour of the production facility.
Glancing over the shoulder of the
man at the workstation is evidence
of what the claim “Weinig
offers more” means and what constitutes
Weinig quality.
The Expo Center package also
includes the adjacent training
centre. A team of experienced applications
engineers is on hand
here to deliver individual or group
training to customers.
The Weinig ExpoCenter currently
comprises two halls covering
How it used to be: the Weinig machine exhibition in Tauberbischofsheim
in the 1960s.
a total of approximately 1,400 m 2
and accommodating 36 machines
and systems along with peripherals
ready for demonstration.
The exhibition space has expanded
in line with the growth of
Weinig as a company. Initially, a
space the size of a large garage was
Keeping the optimal solution in mind: intensive exchange between
customer and Weinig specialist.
sufficient to exhibit the planing
and profiling machines that constituted
the entire Weinig range at
the time.
These facilities were supplemented
in the 1960s by a Weinig
demonstration vehicle. “This enabled
us to demonstrate Weinig
technology on site throughout
Germany,” recounts Klaus Müller.
Weinig also displayed breathtaking
powers of innovation: Firstly
came four-sided processing in a
single pass. Then followed high-capacity
spindles for ever-increasing
feed speeds before Weinig
brought a first generation of automation
systems to the market.
Further pioneering developments
followed from hydro-planing technology,
jointing, development of a
Weinig tool and tool grinding system
and frame-type window production
through to CNC control.
The pioneering technology
prompted constant increases in
customer visits to Tauberbischofsheim.
And so, in the early 1980s,
Weinig moved the machine exhibition
into larger accommodation.
Shortly after, the next Weinig
era dawned. Not only did a number
of successful independent
companies in Waco, Dimter, Grecon
and later Raimann and Lux-
Scan join Weinig, but the size of
the portfolio increased considerably.
The all-round expertise in
solid wood processing that developed
at this time, and is still promoted
by the company today via
the slogan “Weinig Works Wood”,
pushed the Expo Center to its limits
yet again. Besides the familiar
planing and profiling machines
and window machines, additional
space was now required for precutting
solutions, wood optimisation
systems and end profiling.
The company seized the moment
and commenced a total refurbishment
of the existing exhibition
space at the start of the year 2000.
In addition to the required extension
of the space, the facilities
were also upgraded to modern requirements
and appropriate presentation
technology was installed.
A test laboratory was also set up,
where new products could be
subjected to extensive verification
in series of tests, often in conjunction
with industrial partners.
Besides its main function of
hosting machine demonstrations,
the ExpoCenter has since also
been used for events. Weinig’s international
in-house exhibition In-
Tech, in particular, benefits from
the installation’s outstanding facilities.
In the multimedia area, almost
all giants of the sector have
given guest presentations.
Klaus Müller concludes: “The
name Expo Center is a brand with
global resonance.”
Pasquill engineers complex roof truss solution for Scottish school
PASQUILL, a leading supplier of
trussed rafters, has completed
the design, manufacture and
delivery of a complex hip-ended
roof at a school in Fife, where
extremely restricted site access
has meant meeting elaborate
logistical requirements.
St Leonards school at St Andrews
is in the final phase of seeing a
major development of its junior section
in the form of a £2.5 million new
build project, which will result in enhanced
facilities for the school’s 530
pupils when completed.
Pasquill worked very closely
throughout the roof design
process with the project’s timber
frame kit provider, Fleming Buildings,
and the architects on behalf
of the main contractor, CBC. Providing
considerable technical
input over several design changes,
Pasquill helped to engineer a costeffective
interpretation of the architect’s
requirements. The result
is a complicated vaulted roof configuration
featuring modified scissor
and vaulted hips of varying
Hitting all the right notes
complexity with raised ties also included.
The roof over the development’s
gym hall was formed using
a complex three part truss configuration.
The design solution for
this section of the project was one
of the main factors contributing to
Pasquill having won the contract.
Forming the only access point
to the site for all building materials
and equipment is an archway
built into what were once the
walls of a medieval abbey. The feature
may be historically interesting
and visually appealing, but it presented
Pasquill with quite a challenge,
thanks to its height and
width restrictions.
The decision was taken to survey
the site carefully, before working
out the logistics of an efficient
delivery and off-loading system.
This meant unloading the roof
trusses off-site before carrying
them by hand through the archway
and onto the site.
A STUDENT finished his education at the HMC Wood and Furniture
College in Rotterdam with a unique final project: a wooden guitar
which is specially designed to let musicians play it in a more natural
position. And he used Alphacam CNC software to ensure accurate
milling of the complicated shapes.
The body of the electric bass guitar is twisted 15 degrees upwards and
the neck 20 degrees downwards. It is made of four different kinds of
wood, and all four parts — the neck, two cheeks and the keys — were
processed and milled with Alphacam.
Student Alex Blok, who was at HMC for six years, spent many hours drawing
the guitar, thinking how to mill the special shape and working on countermoulds.
A drawing programme helped him create the 3D drawing which
was easily imported into Alphacam. “I’m kind of an Alphacam fan,” he says.
“During my time at college I’ve used various software packages for milling,
but most of them are hard to control, and while one of the systems worked
very well for 3D shapes, it didn’t for 2D. Alphacam has the perfect balance.”
Because of the non-standard design, Alex encountered some challenges in making the guitar — not with the college’s Biesse five-axis CNC router
programmed with Alphacam, but with the postprocessor. Although HMC got the postprocessor with the CNC machine, he says it was very limited in
simultaneously controlling five axes.
He knew that with the CNC machine and Alphacam’s extensive five-axis capabilities, he
should be able to create the guitar exactly as he designed it, but the original postprocessor
would not let him.
“The postprocessor got confused when I wanted to mill five axes simultaneously. I was
sure the CNC machine could handle the Alphacam five-axis program, because it worked
when I controlled it manually.”
The college’s CNC Technology lecturor, Anton van Veldhoven, realised Alex would not be
able to complete the guitar with the old postprocessor, so purchased a new one from
Alphacam reseller, Proteus Systems Europe BV. With the new postprocessor in place, the fiveaxis
Alphacam program was readily communicated to the Biesse, and easily created the separate
pieces of the guitar.
Alex’s guitar takes in concepts from five different styles, producing a unique end product
that has drawn extremely favourable comments from bass guitarists who have trialled it.
Following his graduation from college Alex landed a job with an interior designer in the
Netherlands which focuses on design, creation and renovation. The company recently purchased
a CNC machine, panel saw and edgebander, and hired Alex to set up the work preparation.
And there was some additional good news for Alex — he will be teaming up with
Alphacam again. His new employers are so convinced of the possibilities Alphacam can offer
to the company that they have decided to buy the software for him to work with.
SANDING & FINISHING
Kündig Brilliant sander is “worth its weight in gold”
DAVID J HADDOCK has been a cabinet maker for over 30
years, working on everything from small jewellery boxes to
the recently completed library at Wadham College, University
of Oxford. He has never advertised, building his success
on word of mouth recommendations.
David recently invested in a Brilliant-2 1350 REd-L sander
which, he says, is “worth its weight in gold”.
His existing Taiwanese sander was good, but could only cope
with solid timber. With projects on the horizon including the
Wadham College library and a marquetry dressing room, David
investigated the market for a quality sander that could cope
with large quantities of panels.
Seeking personal recommendations from his local contacts,
David shortlisted two sanders: Kündig, and a German competitor.
First, he visited Switzerland to see the Kündig factory and
very much liked what he saw: this was followed by a visit to
Germany, shortly after which he committed to the German
machine, the deciding factors being the large number of extras
it offered and a better financial package.
Following the delivery of the German machine, David identified
three key problems. David reports that it was too complex
David is delighted with the results when lacquer panels, such as
this one, are sanded on the Brilliant.
The library at Wadham College, University of Oxford.
for the workshop, could not cope with small timber components and, in
David’s words, “did not do the job it was meant to.”
He comments: “It was over engineered. It would have been fantastic if
we had just been doing panels, but our work is incredibly diverse, including
both small timber components and large panels.”
With the marquetry dressing room and then the University library
coming up fast, David urgently contacted Carl O’Meara of Kündig UK to
see what was available.
Time was short, so David took what was in stock: a machine with the
option of lacquer finishing. David says, “It was more money, but it has
proved it is worth its weight in gold. I never would have believed a sander
could sand lacquered panels so well!”
David is delighted with the finish achieved with the Kündig Brilliant-
2 sander which, he says, is spot on. He continues: “It is so easy to use, any
of my lads can use it without really thinking about it,” and has found that
the sander has significantly speeded up production in the workshop.
The Brilliant-2 1350 REd-L sander has a first contact roller for accurate
calibration of the material and a second head, which is an electronic segmental
sanding pad, which can be used for sanding veneer and, on the
“-L” series, also lacquer.
It also has a vacuum bed, belt blowers for cleaning the abrasive and
variable speed to the abrasive, which is electronic inverter
controlled: the segments in the pad are 22 mm.
The “1350” in the machine’s title refers to the width of
the sanding belt, 1,350 mm.
Although the machine has only been in place for a
few months, it has already proved its worth, having
been used in the University library project, not one
but two marquetry dressing rooms, and special projects
such as the new inlaid BA logo for Gatwick Airport:
a project which took advantage of the ability of
the Brilliant to sand lacquered panels.
With lacquer sanding, the amount removed can be
as little as 0.01 mm. The precision of the Kündig Brilliant
range allows a result to be achieved at a depth
often invisible to the unaided human eye.
When asked if he would recommend the sander,
David’s response was: “100%, yes. In fact, I have recommended
it to a colleague also looking around at
machines, who took delivery of a Kündig sander on
Monday. He is a local chap who I work with, and on
my recommendation has gone with the Kündig.”
SANDING & FINISHING
Makita’s first cordless sander “has the
performance of a mains machine”
THE NEW Makita BBO180 and
BBO140 cordless 125 mm random
orbit sanders give the
same level of performance as AC
mains powered models, according
to the company, and being
cordless have even greater
manoeuvrability.
Powered by a quick 22-minute
recharge 18 V or 14.4 V Lithium-ion
3.0 Ah battery, these two cordless
sanders are a major new addition
to the Makita range which boasts
over 450 power tools designed for
construction professionals.
Aesthetically, the Makita
BBO140 and BBO180 sanders are
compact and stylish. The compact
body design puts the top of the
machine just 153 mm above the
sanding surface whilst at the same
time the low position of the motor
lowers the centre of gravity making
these sanders comfortable to
use, well balanced and easily controllable
with one or two hands.
The ergonomic design of the
handgrip adds to the comfort and
control. The battery is mounted
alongside the machine body and
is easily accessible for changing.
Ready to operate, these sanders
weigh just 1.6-1.7 kg.
Technically, these new Makita
sanders bristle with innovations
and performance features. High
productivity is achieved by the
high orbit speeds of up to 11,000
orbits/minute. There are three
speed settings, which are easily
and conveniently selected by a
push button control on the front
of the handgrip. A choice of 7,000,
9,500 and 11,000 rpm can be selected.
The corresponding sanding
stroke rates are 14,000, 19,000
and 22,000 spm. The stop button
is also located in this convenient
forward position and this activates
an electronic pad brake. The orbit
dia meter is 2.8 mm.
The new Makita Lithium-ion
powered cordless sanders have a
123 mm pad size to carry 125 mm
diameter sanding discs from the
Makita accessory range. Hook and
loop abrasive attachment is a feature
on the BBO140 and BBO180
machines. A high rate of dust extraction
is achieved with waste
material being extracted through
eight holes in the pad and captured
through a nozzle that can be
set at 12 different angles.
Dust is discharged into a dust
bag supplied with the machine or
alternatively, these cordless sanders
can be connected directly to a
Makita dust extraction unit to maintain
safe working environments.
The Makita abrasive range offers
a wide variety of abrasive discs
with many alternative grit levels,
pads and wool polishing mops.
SANDING & FINISHING
Mirka launches Pneumatic Random
Orbital Sander Mirka® PROS650CV
MIRKA (UK) Ltd continues to expand
its range of advanced
sanding and polishing machines
with the launch of its Pneumatic
Random Orbital Sander —
Mirka® PROS650CV.
This machine was developed by
Mirka’s industry leading design
team. It is packed with many features
that have made it an efficient
and effective sanding tool, perfect
for professional use.
Mirka® PROS has been specifically
developed to produce maximum
dust extraction, even at
reduced suction power.
Mirka® PROS features optimised
ergonomics that make it extremely
user-friendly. The design
incorporates an integrated cover,
which supports the operator’s
hand and protects it from outgoing
air discharge, reducing the
risk of cold finger — this enables
operators to comfortably use the
machine for longer periods. As an
additional safety feature, when
the support cover is raised the machine
is locked, allowing the disc
to be changed or an air inlet hose
to be connected.
The innovative features continue
with a ‘brake seal’ designed
to deliver unique performance
benefits. For example, in contrast
to conventional sanders, the brake
seal on the Mirka® PROS makes
the backing pad oscillate rather
than free spin when holding the
machine in the air. This eliminates
the possibility of causing deep
marks in the surface when the fast
rotating abrasive first touches the
surface to be sanded. In addition,
as soon as the tool is removed
from the work surface, the brake
seal immediately brakes the ‘rotation
speed’ of the backing pad. The
long-life brake seal also contributes
to improved dust extraction
efficiency by minimising the
internal suction leakage.
What is more, the Mirka® PROS
is constructed from high quality
materials that deliver long lasting
durability, ensuring outstanding
performance long into the future.
A new backing pad has also
been designed for the Mirka®
PROS. It features a central air inlet
which results in improved air flow
and helps extract dust away from
the centre of the tool even faster.
The new Mirka® PROS is testament
to Mirka’s commitment to
provide a total sanding solution
that delivers real cost reduction
benefits to its customers. It is designed
to work perfectly with
Mirka accessories and the revolutionary
NET sanding abrasives
range, including Autonet®,
Abranet® and Abranet® HD. Combined
with a dust extraction system
the benefits are: true
‘dust-free’ sanding; a cleaner work
environment; better control and a
high quality finish. In short, a total
sanding solution.
The new Mirka® PROS is available
in both 5 mm and 8 mm orbits
from all Mirka stockists.
WOOD WASTE & DUST CONTROL
Energy-saving extraction for Willerby Holiday Homes
WILLERBY Holiday Homes, the Hull-based
manufacturer of luxury holiday homes, has invested
in a new energy-efficient dust extraction
system which has been designed, supplied
and installed by Dust Control Systems.
Established just after the Second World War,
Willerby is believed to be the UK’s largest manufacturer
of holiday homes and lodges, selling its
extensive range across the UK and Europe. The
company is at the forefront of holiday home design
and manufacture, and is committed to the
pursuit of environmental excellence at its awardwinning,
energy-efficient factory, which employs
extensive recycling practices and waste
reduction processes.
The new dust extraction system comprises an
externally-sited Schuko EcoVar 2030 modular
chain filter which has a total airflow volume of
135,000 m 3 /hr. Filter cleaning is carried out by a
dual cleaning system which employs a cleaning fan
housed at the top of the filter, and mechanical
shaker system at the base. The energy-efficient system
employs three 55 kW direct-drive main fan
units, which replace the previous three 75 kW beltdriven
fans, and extract from a total of 40 processing machines. The filter has
rotary valve discharge into a 15 kW fan-powered closed-loop waste transfer
system which feeds waste directly into two large capacity boxcarts. The new
filter plant replaced the enormous drag chain filter, which had been built on
top of the factory’s maintenance shop. DCS disconnected the old plant, in
preparation for its removal, and installed three 710 mm diameter main ducting
runs from the new main fans to existing junctions within the factory.
A key feature of the energy-saving installation is the ECOGATE®
extraction-on-demand system, which constantly monitors the use of
each individual processing machine and automatically regulates the
speed of the relevant fan unit accordingly. The system employs an Ecogate
greenBOX MASTER SRL controller, motorised gates and sensors at
each machine, together with variable speed drives for the three main
fans. The required power requirement to each fan is determined by the
opening and closing of the motorised gates, thereby only using the exact
amount of power required and avoiding energy wastage.
Willerby Holiday Homes contracted DCS to install the new system during
the firm’s summer shutdown and Christian Wilson, facilities manager,
says: “The project required a lot of detailed planning and DCS worked together
with us from initial concept through to completion. They were
confident from the outset that they could achieve installation and commissioning
within the allotted timescale and that they could attain the
levels of savings that they forecasted. I’m pleased to report that they
scored highly on both counts: the transition from the old to the new system
was almost seamless. And, our production people just love the new
DCS EcoVar modular filter handles dust and chips from 40 machines.
system — it’s far more efficient than the old plant, it’s much quieter, and
it saves us a significant amount of expenditure on electricity.”
DCS engineers conservatively predicted that the new system would
save around £35,000 per year on energy usage, when compared to
Willerby’s old dust plant. Following review of stored data carried out after
one month’s operation, the annual savings prediction has now been adjusted
up to £46,000.
WOOD WASTE & DUST CONTROL
Dust extraction experience from Jeld-Wen
WITH A client portfolio as
blue chip as it comes, Dustraction’s
range of dust and
air pollution hardware, services
and equipment has
been deployed at one time
or another in the service of
almost all the production
machinery brands on the
display floor at this year’s
W12 exhibition. Managing
director, Steve Matuska, reports
business as usual in
difficult times.
Dustraction is one of
Britain’s pioneers in wood
waste extraction with a track
record going back more than
half a century and counting
among its customers in timber
and board names like Jeld-
Wen and Formica, and in specialist
manufacturing, Jaguar
Cars and Rolls Royce! At its factory
at Oadby on the Leicester
ring, Dustraction has a manufacturing
floor area of more
than 1,000 m 2 and some of the
Dustraction’s work with the Health & Safety Executive is ongoing — the goal
is to improve the monitoring of waste extraction from individual machines.
best and most up-to-date
computer controlled sheet
metal working machinery in
the business.
All extraction systems are
manufactured in-house, including
ruggedly constructed
paddle blade varieties for big
waste volumes — at SAM
Mouldings in Northern Ireland
we’re talking 2.5 tons per hour
of MDF dust — plus a huge
range of other fan types for
wood and panel waste in wide
ranging load capacities. High
volume cyclones are also now
manufactured in-house under
the Dustrax banner in order,
Steve Matuska says, to maintain
quality and efficiency
standards plus, of course,
ready availability.
Shop floor technology at
Dustraction includes computer-operated
plasma profiling
and a CNC press brake,
both of which are backed up
by an ongoing programme of
Oakfield Cabinets was generating around 4 tonnes of waste a week that was costing £20,000 a year to dispose of; that cost is now recouped
— and the factory is heated for free.
inward investment. It’s that, the inward
investment, plus unparalleled
manpower experience, that
keeps Dustraction at the cutting
edge of wood and panel waste extraction
for design and engineering
excellence.
Ducting bearing the Dustraction
WOOD WASTE & DUST CONTROL
Hot new product from Wood Waste Technology
LEADING manufacturer of waste
to energy solutions, Wood Waste
Technology Ltd, is launching a
new hot water boiler system to
compliment its current range of
wood waste heaters, shredders
and briquette machines — helping
companies to use their wood
waste to save money on heating
and skip costs.
With the Government’s Renewable
Heat Incentive (RHI) offering
substantial financial benefits to
companies for 20 years, there’s
never been a better time for UK
businesses to invest in new biomass
technology to produce heat
and hot water from their waste.
Wood Waste Technology has invested
years in research and development
to produce superior
quality biomass boilers at competitive
prices. Wood Waste Technology’s
new boiler system will open
up the market to allow smaller
companies, as well as larger corporations,
to benefit from renewable
energy hot water solutions.
The Wood Waste Technology boiler system offers three heating solutions
in one package, providing space heating to factory areas, traditional
radiator heating for offices and domestic hot water.
The team at Wood Waste Technology is proud to have created what it
believes may be the most efficient wood waste boiler system available
in the UK, if not Europe. The products have been designed and tested to
BSEN303-5-1999, the highest standard for efficiency and emissions, allowing
customers to maximise their return from the RHI scheme.
Built with UK wood manufacturers in mind, the boiler has fuel flexibility
so can burn any type of chipped or shredded wood waste, from dust
to rugged wood chips. As the official distributor for Gross UK, a German
manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters,
Wood Waste Technology also offers a range of shredding solutions
for use with its waste to heat systems.
The boilers are manufactured by Wood Waste Technology in the UK,
to the company’s exacting quality standards, and are built to last. The
team at Wood Waste Technology is very proud that all the wood
waste heaters it has sold to date are still in operation today — a
sign of the manufacturing excellence that Wood Waste Technology
has built its reputation on.
The units have been designed to be user friendly, and contain
many innovative features. For instance, the units have flexible
capability, so can run from 30% up to full capacity, allowing
the boiler to be turned down when factories are empty
overnight and on weekends. Not only does this make better use
of resources, it gives companies a greater return on each kilogram
of wood waste, and maximises possible RHI payments.
The boilers are available in various outputs, from 300 kW up
to 1 MW, to suit all business sizes. The touch screen PLC interfaces
make them easy to use, and they are also easy to maintain. Other
design features include a water cooled combustion chamber to
provide greater efficiency and extend the life of the system, and
low nitrogen oxide (NOx) output that falls within the lower limits
proposed by the Government in its forthcoming legislation.
Managing director of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft,
says: “We’re really excited by our new hot water boiler system, as
Wood Waste Technology can now offer the full spectrum of biomass
energy solutions, helping to protect businesses from
escalating heating bills and on-going waste disposal costs.”
Wood Waste Technology offers site survey, design, manufacture,
installation and on-going maintenance for new and old
units. To find out more about utilising wood waste more effectively
WINDOWS: DESIGN & MANUFACTURE
Every eight minutes!
WESTBURY Garden Rooms Ltd
has recently installed a Stegherr
KSF2/7E fully automatic glazing
bar machining centre in its new
manufacturing site in Essex.
Jonathan Hey started the then
named “Westbury Conservatories”
in 1988 after building a conservatory
for his mother: the business
grew mainly through recommendation,
and in 2001 he started Westbury
Windows and Joinery Ltd.
In 2011 a £2m investment was
started with the move to the new
site and the installation of a
Weinig Conturex, S & S frame
cramp and a biomass boiler. Included
in this investment was the
new Stegherr KSF2/7E.
The KSF2/7E has the well
proven four head halving joint
cutting system guaranteeing a
perfect joint on profiled bar without
any breakout. This machine
has the additional two head cutting
element to automatically
scribe the end of bars again without
breakout. The seventh unit is
an angle cutting saw that can be
adjusted to five different angles
and as an option can be controlled
by a servo motor to cut any angle
between –45° and +45°.
At the start of the cycle the work
piece is automatically fed into the
machine and positioned for each
process by the NC pusher.
The package offered by John
Penny Woodworking Machinery
Ltd includes machine commissioning
and full training by a
Stegherr engineer over two days.
Jonathan Hey has confirmed that
on day 2 they were producing and
fitting internal and external bars to
a glazed frame on average every
eight minutes: previously this
could take up to an hour!
W12 REVIEW
Many orders and enquiries for SCM Group at W12
OVERALL, SCM Group had a
very good W12 exhibition, with
many orders and enquiries received
over the four open days
on the stand that had a wide
range of machines on display
from SCM’s Premium range.
SCM’s trade account manager,
Roger Gabb, commented: “We
were very busy on all four days
with many customers visiting our
stand to view the latest developments
in the SCM range of Premium
Division machines. Our
demonstrators were always kept
busy which in turn led to orders for
CNC machining centres, edge banders,
planer moulders and classical
machines, with several being delivered
direct to customers from
the stand after the show.”
The Pratix ‘S’ CNC machining
centre was very popular, being an
entry level CNC machine for the
nesting of full size 8 ft x 4 ft panels
into component parts, and at a
price that is very affordable and includes
software for easy programming
on the machine.
With three edge banders on display
and running, the K260 EVO,
K600 and S1000, several machines
were sold as melamine tape, 3 mm
PVC/ABS and solid wood lippings
were applied to show the excellent
quality of finish obtained including
corner rounding. On the
K600, the RT-E panel edge trimming
device provides a perfect
edge to the panels before edge
gluing, due to the use of the front
copying devices that allows a constant
removal of material over the
entire panel length, maintaining
the same work piece geometry.
The new Profiset 60 Planer
Moulder demonstrated is designed
to be very sturdy with up
to six spindles available and has a
generous 230 x 120 mm capacity,
with feed speeds of 6/12 or variable
4-24 m/min. The new feed
system using Cardan joints and
gearboxes is the technological
heart of this machine providing
higher productivity and an even
better finish to the timber. Distinctive
features include pneumatic
pressure on the feed rollers and
the inverter for continuous speed
control guaranteeing powerful, efficient
and linear feeding.
Making its UK debut was the
Tech Z5 CNC machining centre.
With a five-axis routing head, it has
a table area of 5,200 x 1,550 mm
and is ideal for the production of
customised furniture components
and for the machining of panels. It
can also be equipped with devices
suitable for solid wood machining
especially for joinery companies
that manufacture stairs and doors.
High performance is guaranteed
with the “photo bumpers” safety
protection.
Maximum operator convenience
and flexibility of use is due
to the “PRISMA 5” routing head
that allows easy operation in a reduced
space without the risk of
collisions.
Several machines from the SCM
Classical and Minimax ranges
were displayed, with the TI 155EP
Class spindle moulder and SI
400EP Class sliding table panel
saw particularly popular.
Minimax machines also displayed
were very popular with the
smaller joinery manufacturers.
W12 has also been an opportunity
to show the new operating
system for the SCM Premium Division
now in place around the
world. Under the new organisation,
the SCM Distributor network
has a much higher involvement in
the sale and servicing of SCM Premium
Division machines, offering
customers a more personalised
approach. The ten SCM UK distributors
are usually no more than
one hours’ drive away from their
customers, guaranteeing a fast response
to sales enquiries and servicing
requests. Also, they
complement their portfolio with
other non-SCM products. Distributors
represent a ‘one stop shop’
opportunity which simplifies the
running of small and medium size
manufacturers in the woodworking
industry.
Roger Gabb concludes, “Considering
the economic climate, we
were very pleased with the W12
exhibition, with small and
medium sized manufacturers
prevalent, who were looking to invest
with the latest technology
now or over the next few months.
“Our excellent relationship with
our distributors who attended our
stand contributed to our success
and we will be very busy visiting
existing and new customers found
at the show during the next few
weeks to close more orders.”
W12 REVIEW
Joinerysoft looking forward to W14
THE WORKING WITH WOOD
(W12) exhibition at the NEC in
October proved successful for
software company Joinerysoft
Ltd, prompting advance booking
for W14.
Joinerysoft was promoting its
forthcoming release of JMS Version
4 and JMS Pro, which will further
enhance its complete
business software solution for bespoke
joinery manufacturing.
Providing cross sections, profiles
and 3D images, the new software
is eagerly awaited by the
industry and existing users of JMS
Version 2. Customers of Joinerysoft
have the added benefit of
receiving the new version free of
charge with their annual support
and updates package.
Joinerysoft managing director,
Alan Turner, said: “Though the
show as a whole seemed quieter
than in previous years, we still had
significant interest in our software
with enquiries remaining as
strong as any other year. Our new
version 4 was in demand with joinery
manufacturers taking advantage
of show discounts to
purchase on the stand. Over the
next few weeks we will be following
up the interest we received at
the show and expect many more
sales as a result of W12.”
This year Joinerysoft provided a separate stand specifically for its customers
at W12 enabling up to 15 joiners at at time to benefit from free
workshops running daily throughout the four day show. These workshops
provided training on the current JMS Version 2 and also a look at
the new features of JMS Version 4 and JMS Pro. Customers made the most
of this opportunity and welcomed the opportunity to see JMS Version 4
in action.
Providing a complete software solution from initial design through
manufacture to delivery, the new Joinery Management Software (JMS)
Version 4 and JMS Pro both offer greater flexibility within curved work,
and provide cut outs, cross sections and profiles as standard for all bespoke
timber joinery. JMS Pro in addition provides greater management
control and will typically suit joinery manufacturers with 10+ joiners.
JMS Pro features include:
● Links to accounting programs such as Sage and Quickbooks.
● Comparison of estimated with actual manufacturing time.
● Time tracking of jobs through production.
● Batching of jobs.
● Phase/splitting of jobs.
● Built in CRM system (track customer requirements).
● Company and user diary/To Do lists.
● Capacity Loading charts for the workshop/machines.
● ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning).
● Ability to view profiles at each process.
● Ability to draw or import a dfx file to produce any profile shape.
Attending W12, Nigel Foster from Phase One Joinery says, “I am very
happy with JMS and use it all the time. The workshops at
W12 were very informative and it was good to see what’s
going to be available. I am looking forward to receiving
cross sections because it will make my life much easier. Instead
of manually drawing cross sections for building control
I will be able to print them automatically within JMS
Version 4.”
Speaking at the newly introduced presentation theatre
at W12, Joinerysoft’s Alan Turner said, “The concept for the
presentation theatre is good and I am sure that once the
idea gets established they will be better attended. Those
that attended the Joinerysoft seminar on complying with
building regulations, specifically U-Values and CE markings,
certainly valued the opportunity to learn more.”
He adds, “The ‘Working with Wood’ show provides a significant
opportunity for joinery manufacturers to investigate
the best the industry has to offer. We remain committed to
the event and have already booked our space for 2014.”
W12 REVIEW
CD (UK) reports solid success at W12
GEOFF BAKER, co-founder and
chairman of CD (UK) Ltd, confirms
that the W12 exhibition
was a resounding success for
the company. As the UK distributor
of DuPont Corian® solid
surface materials and products,
as well as being the exclusive
distributor for several leading
machinery manufacturers, W12
proved the ideal platform to
showcase the company’s port -
folio of products and services.
CD (UK) presented its wares on
two separate stands: in the “Working
with Design” section, visitors
were treated to an array of stunning
products exemplifying the
endless design possibilities that
can be realised with Corian, and, in
the “Working with Wood” halls, the
company displayed a host of specialist
machinery and tools for use
Demonstrations of solid surface thermoforming and sanding
machinery proved to be a crowd-puller for CD (UK) Ltd at W12.
in solid surface fabrication. Situated
only a few steps apart, visitor
traffic between the two stands
was “greater than anticipated, and
further justified our decision to exhibit
in both areas,” said Mr Baker.
Visitors to the ‘Working with
Wood’ stand were able to explore
the comprehensive range of professional
tools for the solid surface
and woodworking sectors that are
distributed by CD (UK). Also featured
was a working demonstration
of the Elkom ‘Multitherm’
Thermoforming Centre which
showed how efficiently the combined
pre-heating station and vacuum
press can form and shape all
types of solid surface materials.
However, the highlight of the machinery
display was undoubtedly
the demonstration of the newlyintroduced
solid surface through-
in under a minute.
feed sanding machine. Named
‘SolidSurfacer’, this unique and
compact sander has been specially
developed for solid surface
material finishing. The multi-head
machine is capable of bringing
solid surface to an accurate calibrated
thickness and sanding to a
three grit 360/500 satin finish in a
single pass.
Eric Whorne, who manages the
Machinery Division, explains: “The
‘SolidSurfacer’ is an exciting new
concept which dramatically reduces
the time required to precisely
finish solid surface materials.
For example, a three metre long
worktop can now be processed in
one pass, and in under 60 seconds
— compare this with around 45
minutes using conventional methods
of finishing with handheld
machine tools.”
The ‘SolidSurfacer’ has a footprint
of just 1370 mm x 1800 mm
and, with a working width of 950
mm, it allows full sheets, worktop
runs of any length, and individual
pieces to be processed. Add to this
the constructional benefits that
calibrating solid surface to an accurate
thickness provides in the
final assembly stage, and the affordably-priced
machine becomes
an attractive proposition for solid
surface fabricators.
Mr Whorne adds: “Being able to
run the ‘SolidSurfacer’ and demonstrate
its unique qualities created lots
of interest and we will be busy over
the next few weeks following up a
good number of solid enquiries.”
New catalogue from Scott & Sargeant
THE FUTURE may not necessarily
be orange, but Scott & Sargeant’s
stand at W12 certainly was, as
the company took the opportunity
to launch the latest edition
of its machinery and tooling catalogue,
clad in a distinctive fluorescent
orange cover.
Packed with new products,
such as premier quality CMT sawblades,
a new range of iTECH
thicknessers and a new portfolio
of vacuum pressing equipment,
the catalogues proved immensely
popular with visitors.
Whilst the exhibition footfall
may have been down, sales director,
Paul Charnaud, was upbeat
about the quality of enquiries and
the volume of orders taken in four
busy days.
The ‘SolidSurfacer’ can calibrate and sand a 3 metre long worktop
“Certainly the exhibition was
smaller and less well attended
than in the past, but the percentage
of genuine enquiries was
pleasingly high, and those,
combined with the firm orders
taken at the show, certainly
proved the value of attending,”
says Mr Charnaud.
As well as having their own
stand, Scott & Sargeant’s sales
team were also present on the
SCM and Otto Martin stands,
where business was similarly brisk,
with orders taken for both classical
and CNC machinery.
W12 REVIEW
RW Machines at W12: innovation on display
Above, the infeed of the Anderson Selexx.
THE revolutionary CoJet 2612
flatbed inkjet printer made its UK
exhibition debut on the RW Machines
stand at this year’s W12.
This is technology that could ultimately
change forever the way
that decorative boards are prepared
for cabinet furniture making
or for custom interiors in kitchens,
bedrooms, bathrooms or the
shopfitting sector. This is high definition
printing of anything from
woodgrain images to complex
graphic designs in a huge range of
colours on flat wood based panels
for fitted or three dimensional furniture
making and including doors
of any shape or size. CoJet not
only prints with inks that are warranted
UV stable for eight years, it
can even reproduce texture on a
surface to mimic the feel of real
natural wood grains. Inkjet print
heads will overprint an image
using multiple passes to build a
surface with real touch depth.
The ability of CoJet to reproduce
a woodgrain texture is superb:
CoJet will also print to any
material — even sheet metals, ceramics
and glass; anything, in fact,
that may be deployed in a decorative
environment.
Pop-up pin technology on the
bed of the press enables simple repeat
positioning of work pieces,
making the CoJet 2612 a serious
production machine that is available
through RW Machines Ltd of
Bicester, who will be fully support-
Above, the CoJet 2612 flatbed inkjet printer with its ink trays on display, and below, an example of
the type of result the printer can produce.
ing CoJet for service, spares and
inks via RW’s highly regarded team
of service engineers.
Also shown for the first time at
W12 was a full-size Anderson Selexx
CNC nesting line with vacuum
loading and including a squaring
device on entry to position panels
without operator intervention and
with a scissor lift and pusher/
destacker for completed panels.
The speed of the Anderson Selexx
working solely in conjunction with
an edgebander could make a
beam saw redundant in many situations,
according to RW’s David
Thompson-Rowland.
A Giben Edge KS26J edge finishing
automat was shown in support
of a newly signed distribution
deal with an Italian supplier better
known for beam saws. The edgebander
exhibit at W12 had been
built especially for a UK customer
to process 2 mm edgebandings
and had been equipped with flat
and profile scrapers for a better
finish. Simplicity of operation is a
major feature of Giben Edge banding
— the screen controller is designed
for fast setup and easy
machine operation and this edgebander
is also considered unique
in trapping all edge trimmings
within the cabinet in support of a
cleaner working environment.
A new membrane press from
Orma on the RW stand was designed
for the application of decorative
coverings to flat and curved
panels. The Orma Air System Eco
25/14 press deploys one or two tables
in a shuttle system and extra
flanges can also adjust the chamber
height for pressing curved
panels with a maximum depth of
200 mm. An intermediate flange
can be used for high gloss work,
guaranteeing uniform tempera-
ture without bubbles or wrinkles
and improving the definition of
finish across all PVC foils.
Also new from RW Machines’
Italian principal Stema at W12 was
the new Multipoint three-axis machine;
the configuration at this
year’s show was for face and edge
boring panels with two independent
groups of tools for dowelling
and fittings insertion on shelves,
windows and doors. Groups of
tools can be configured to drill,
route and insert as needed.
Also bearing the Stema label was
the CB86 drilling and hinge insertion
machine working from the underside
of panels, drilling holes and
inserting hinge plates.
This machine from Stema can be
configured to work with any hinge
supplier just by changing the magazine
and the pusher. It was
equipped with three spindles for
hinges and two for plates plus a chip
extractor complete with dust collection
bags.
Spinamatic by the same maker
was shown for gluing and dowelling
and can be equipped with a choice
of pumps for working in conjunction
with a range of white adhesives.
Edge finishing shaped panels
has become big business for RW
Machines, reports David Thompson
Rowland, and two different
capability options
were
fielded at W12.
One was
from Vitap; —
the Eclipse
model at the
lower end of
the capability
spectrum and
Vector, developed in New Zealand,
at the other. First seen at W10 was
Vitap’s easy-to-use Eclipse contour
edgebander is now equipped with
pre-milling.
Both Vitap and Vector are designed
to edge finish contoured
panels, tracing the contour, applying
an edgeband and cutting
neatly on conclusion of the wrap.
With Vector the operator need
only position the panel for the
head to find the edge automatically
and then to complete the
process. A patented system keeps
the head pressed firmly against
the edge of the panel, controlling
both pressure and also speed to
ensure a very tight and perfect
bond.
Vector will apply PP, acrylic, PVC,
veneer and indeed almost any
W12 REVIEW
Bonacin Closer auto adjusts for height and length.
type of edge finish to the most
commonly used wood based
panels, including hollowcore.
An unfilled hotmelt adhesive of
good quality is recommended for
contours, says Vector, most of
which will be high value products
carrying better margins.
Also from Vitap is the new
Quartz, a small in-line edgebander
with buffing units top and bottom.
A glue joint and profile
scraper unit was shown on the
show machine with a trimmer and
end cutter and also pre-milling for
optimum edge quality.
This is a highly cost-effective,
small footprint edgebander designed
for processing all types of
finishing materials on small shop
floors.
In support of a very different
application was Bonacin Closer, a
cabinet clamp that is easily inserted
into any production line;
this electro-mechanical cabinet
clamp adjusts automatically for
both height and length using
photo electric cells.
Bonacin’s closer is adjustable for
pressure and is considered the ultimate
machine for high productivity
and low operating costs.
And lastly at W12, RW Machines
announced a new agency agreement
with Swiss veneer jointing and
splicing specialists, Fisher+Ruckle.
Managing director, Alexander
Baptista, said on the stand that a
Giacomo Bertone (right) with a specialist engineer from Vitap.
range of different machines will
make their UK entry under the
Omni label for low cost glue jointing
and longitudinal splicing applications
in smaller workshops.
The stand machine is the first of
several that will be available from
the Bicester-based distributor;
managing director, David Thompson
Rowland, said: “Omni represents
a stable of very good
machines that are designed to
make veneer working simpler and
more consistent.”
W12 REVIEW
A thank you from Hranipex to visitors
to its stand at W12
HRANIPEX Ltd reports a successful W12 exhibition at the NEC Birmingham
whilst enjoying a constant flow of visitors to its stand: the
four day event has so far proved itself to be successful and further
helped to highlight the company’s presence in the UK market.
Hranipex notes that the event was well attended by visitors from all
over the UK spanning from John o’Groats to Land’s End and ultimately
appreciates the top quality contacts the event has yielded.
W12 was a perfect place to showcase Hranipex’s vast range of ABS, design,
veneer and melamine collections and gave potential clients a
chance to view, touch and discuss with the sales representatives on hand.
This year’s W12 event also represented Hranipex chairman Zdenek
Ryzner’s first UK event and gave UK customers a chance to meet the man
behind the company. The event also highlights that the UK customer demands
fresh solutions to its edging headaches — the feedback was consistent
that furniture manufacturers require a diverse range of decors in
various dimensions without having to wait for long delivery times or
worry about large minimum order quantities — with Hranipex the minimum
order is kept low to give the customer the flexibility to use only
what they need when they need it.
The theme of the event was always “Simply more” — promoting over
900 ABS decors with next day service in multiple dimensions in quantities
from just one metre. The aim of the event was to promote the company’s
commitment to matching decors to the boards of all the world’s
leading board manufacturers from Egger to Krono span, Sonae, Finsa, etc,
matching each edge individually.
Hranipex matches each edge individually to ensure that the customer
gets the best possible edge for their requirements — no need to use just one oak to match
multiple oak boards from multiple board manufacturers as with Hranipex the customer has
over 60 oaks to choose from in the Express Collection alone and there is no need for the customer
to choose the match themselves — Hranipex has a solution with its edge banding
search facility on its website, which is updated daily.
As with the 2010 event, visitors to the Hranipex stand were treated to a relaxed atmosphere
and excellent hospitality — which forms the basis of the company's mission statement in the UK
— equal opportunities for customers big and small so regardless if you are a large producer or
independent joiner, you are guaranteed the same excellent service and treatment every time.
“Our visitors gave universal feedback that UK customers are generally impressed when
there is a new company with fresh ideas and alternatives to the normal supply and matching
headaches with new stock from Kronospan, Egger etc with 24 hour delivery. A company that
can do everything for a customer’s needs, a company with the available technology to produce
any edge with prompt response times,” commented
sales representative, Jonathan Allaker.
“The overall feedback is that customers are still
looking for a supplier that can cater for their every
requirement and would love to eliminate the need
to make ten phone calls to the various suppliers on
the UK market every time they need to buy an edge.
“The feeling is the customer has never been asked
the question — ‘what do you want?’. The Hranipex
model is to investigate each customer’s individual
needs and provide a truly unique bespoke customer
care experience!” he concludes.
Fashionable display
Expectations exceeded
HIGH TECHNOLOGY coatings
supplier, Movac Group, exhibited
within the Working with
Design area, with a show-stopper
fashion show themed under
the banner Movac — always at
the forefront of colour fashion,
and providing W12 with the
“eXtra” factor!
The stand comprised a central
catwalk structure leading out of a
circular entrance designed from
an element of the Movac logo,
onto the stage, using white minimalist
backdrops alongside the
company’s corporate red colour
and bold fashion model images.
The surrounding areas featured
seven striking mannequins coated
in various Sayerlack finishes, including
gold acrylic two pack lacquer,
pink water based crackle
lacquer and white gloss
polyurethane together with
clothes rails holding wooden coat
hangers sprayed in various Sayerlack
finishes with tags attached
providing details of the particular
coatings used, so that visitors
could ‘browse’ through them a
their leisure. A large ‘live video’
screen ran throughout the day, together
with touch screens, presenting
the new website, which
also incorporates the fashion
theme and images.
Movac then provided an entertaining
ten minute fashion show
twice a day, which never failed to
draw appreciative visitors to the
stand, with two models sporting
various wooden garments coated
in the company’s finishes, including
tabard-style outfits, natural
wood bangles and earrings using
various Sayerlack stains and lacquers
and wooden ties coated in
various colours in Sayerlack topcoat
and water based topcoat —
ARMAC MARTIN National Sales
Manager, Gary Barnes was very
pleased to talk to many customers
old and new at the recent
W12 exhibition.
“Nothing beats face to face discussions
and physically handling
products for feedback on new lines
and building relationships,” said
Gary, also commenting again that
the volume of enquiries harked
back to the good old days of exhibitions
in the 90s: all very heartening.
Whilst customers in the kitchen
market have driven new ranges
and developments over the past
few years it was domestic and contract
furniture manufacturers,
joiners and shopfitters that Armac
Martin targeted at the show.
With displays of new products
and stock lines of stays, magnetic
and specialist catches, hinges and
bespoke manufacturing, there
was something in the product
portfolio for all.
A brand new brochure is currently
being produced to showcase
all the new ranges, and PDFs
Talbott’s wood waste heating solutions are hot at W12
TALBOTT’S, the original British manufacturer of wood waste heating
solutions, received much interest at the recent W12 Working With
Wood exhibition.
At a time where making savings for companies is more important than
ever, using on site generated wood waste for heating is an ideal solution.
There are substantial savings to be made by eliminating wood waste disposal
costs and heating bills. There is also an increased awareness for incorporating
energy efficiency measures into businesses and this was
recognised at the show by Talbott’s stand staff.
A lot of companies were keen to discuss the renewable heat incentive,
which is a Government tariff scheme for producing renewable biomass
heating that also includes wood waste as a fuel.
As welll as many new prospective clients looking to save money, Talbott’s
also had many existing customers visit the stand, simply to say hello
and how pleased they are with their Talbott’s system.
Amy Fielding, commercial director for Talbott’s,
comments: “It’s great to receive so much positive
feedback all at once and makes our hard work and efforts
worthwhile. Since the show, we have already
converted numerous new enquiries into orders and
expect to receive many more for our broad selection
of wood waste heating systems.”
The Talbott’s range of wood waste air heaters and
boilers are available in a variety of sizes either as
simple manual fed units or automated solutions. They
are suitable to use hardwoods, softwoods, MDF and
chipboards to provide space or process heating. All
units are approved appliances for use within smoke
control areas and Talbott’s has ranges eligible to receive
the Renewable Heat Incentive. The company
also offers some of the most competitive rates available
for on going service, parts and maintenance.
£110,000 of Alphacam and Cabinet Vision orders at W12
VERO Software’s two leading
woodwork brands, Alphacam
and Cabinet Vision, took orders
worth over £110,000 at the W12
exhibition.
With W12 being the UK’s leading
exhibition for the joinery and
furniture manufacturing industries,
Cabinet Vision general manager,
Richard Chappell, says the
company regards it as a sales
event. “We’ve come to W12 with a
different look, a different attitude
and different feel, and taking over
£110,000 worth of orders showed
that exhibitions are not just places
to be seen. They are places to conduct
business.”
As well as the firm orders,
Alphacam and Cabinet Vision
combined had over 160 additional
leads. Alphacam general manager,
Nick Spurrett, was extremely
pleased to hear that many customers
have full order books. “Because
companies have a constant
stream of work they have money
to invest in the right software to
not only drive their new CNC machine
tools, but which drives their existing tools faster and better, increasing
productivity. That’s why both Alphacam and Cabinet Vision did
so well at W12.”
He says customers have more confidence in the future today than they
did at W10, and feels the market is buoyant.
W12 was the first opportunity for UK users to see the new and enhanced
functionality in the latest releases of both brands — Alphacam
2013 R1 and Cabinet Vision V8.
Visitors to the joint stand were impressed with Alphacam’s new reporting
function. “They told us that being able to create user configurable
reports and labels will improve both part and program traceability. They
can set up bespoke documentation for nested job reports, setup sheets,
tool listings and part labels,” says Nick Spurrett. The new tool path oscillation
function also caused widespread interest at the show. A sinusoidal
or zig-zag up and down movement can be applied to any contour toolpath,
utilising more of the tool’s effective cutting length which will improve
surface finish and extend
tool life.
And Richard Chappell says the
new rendering features in Cabinet
Vision V8 are the best ever. “Woodworking
manufacturers already
use rendering as a marketing tool.
Now those renderings which show
their customers exactly how the
cabinets will look in situ, are even
better.”
W12 was the first time in the UK
that Alphacam and Cabinet Vision
exhibited under the new Vero
branding, following the merger of
Vero and Planit last year. The software
was also used by machinery
manufacturer partners in machining
demonstrations on their own
stands, featuring nesting and part
machining.
After the success of W12 Alphacam
and Cabinet Vision look forward
to a strong finish to 2012 and
would like to take this opportunity
to thank their many UK customers
for their continued support.
W12 REVIEW
W12 exhibition success for Team Weinig
MALCOLM Cuthbertson, managing director of Weinig UK in Abingdon, was highly satisfied with the sales and record number of quality enquiries
received on the stand at W12. The Rubik’s Cube drew by far the most number of customers, with non-stop demonstrations from start to finish.
A record number of orders are expected when enquiries are followed up — additional to those placed at the exhibition. Other Weinig machines
on the stand also attracted interest and
orders — the advanced technology of
the 3D profiling Powermat was an ‘eye
opener’ to many moulder users opening
up new business opportunities.
Holz-Her products on show also impressed
visitors by their advanced technology,
innovative features and quality.
The edgebander technology in particular,
attracted a lot of attention. The Glu
Jet System, believed to be unique,
clearly distances Holz-Her from others
with its outstanding benefits: no glue
pot, high precision, takes only three
minutes to heat up and colour changes
in no time at all.
Holz-Her’s other machines: CNC
routers, wall saws and beam saws attracted
significant enquiries indicating
the demand for a competitive range of
quality machines supported by
prompt, individual expert advice on solutions
backed up by after-sales advice
service from Weinig UK in Abingdon.
Enthusiastic response
FERCELL ENGINEERING and
Weima reported a substantial
volume of enquiries particularly
in the first two days of W12, particularly
for systems representing
energy efficiency and
operational cost saving: which,
according to the company,
pretty much describes its range
of products and services.
The show saw the UK launch of
the Ultra Series Single Shaft Shredder
Ultra 60, 80, 100 and the
launch of the Fercell Wireless Networx
systems.
The launch of the Ultra single
shaft shredder series (illustrated)
from Weima met with an enthusiastic
response for a machine designed
especially for the UK SME
woodworking joinery factory.
New standard features include
the Weima designed and manufactured
WAP gearbox which, in
the past, has been reserved for
heavier industrial shredders.
Also included as standard is the
patented “V” rotor, delivering a
considerable throughput volume
and homogeneous fraction size.
The Fercell Wireless Networx
System demonstrator was also
very popular, with a number of
factory owners eager to view the
latest generation of wireless technology
for communication and
control of numerous processors
offering rapid deployment, easy
adjustment and remote diagnostics.
The system is claimed to offer
infinite expansion, and is compatible
with wired systems.
The Fercell Networx System
maximises performance and
extends the life of extraction systems,
while minimising operational
costs by isolating unused
suction points, increasing and
optimising suction rates, reducing
motor speeds, power consumption,
noise and maintenance, and
increased filter life.
Also attracting attention at W12
were the Sirrocco range of dryback
spray booths, now available
from Fercell Engineering with the
“SubSonic Pack”.
Incorporating the latest fan
technology, decibel levels are
greatly reduced for super quiet
operation, higher energy efficiency
and lower power consumption.
The structural design
has been improved, creating a
more compact unit but retaining
all the features this dryback spray
booth has come to be known for.
It represents quality built in England,
in a variety of materials of a
modular design and suited for use
in the harshest of environments.
Options available include single
and three phase supply, IP55 or
EExd DOL starter and thermal
overload, three disposable cartridge
filter types, filter monitoring,
EG energy switch, a variety of
lighting options and ancillary
equipment such as conveyors,
turntables and racking.
W12 REVIEW
Positive response for David Clouting at W12
The new stone designs produced an “excellent” response,
says commercial director, Edward Quant.
DAVID Clouting Ltd was pleased to see that the W12 exhibition had
maintained its standards, with visitor numbers and their relevance
to the company’s services providing a pleasing match. The business
is now following up on the many contacts made at the event, which
will require contact with
nearly 250 individuals and
companies.
Edward Quant, David
Clouting commercial director,
said: “Our various different
interior surfaces
attracted a wide and varied
audience. We were also delighted
with the response
from the shop fitting sector
to Interior Film, which provides
stunning designs and
textures to cover all surfaces
of interiors. Self-adhesive,
fire rated, applied to most
surfaces — it’s a perfect
product to decorate and fit
out buildings, saving time.”
Interior Film can be easily
fixed to the majority of substrates,
allowing shop fitters
to quickly transform any
room setting.
The selection of woods, stones, leathers, metals and decorative designs
can also be applied to furniture and fittings, providing further potential
to create unique settings with the minimum of disruption.
The response from visitors to W12 further endorsed the company’s enviable
reputation for being at the forefront of innovation. “Texture is increasingly
important and our Graphite and White solid colour with a new
horizontal emboss was a star of the exhibition,” said Mr Quant.
Two recent introductions, Coimbra Ash and African Walnut, also attracted
considerable interest,
he continued. Coimbra
Ash is matched to Egger’s
Sand Lyon Ash H1298 and
African Walnut is matched
to Kronospan’s African Walnut
D8311. The new options
are now being introduced
into the David Clouting
stock range.
“Paint — Innoface solid
colours and High Gloss solid
colours — are a key part of
the KBB product selection,
which David Clouting supports
with a large number of
stock colours. Mussel is
being introduced in High
Gloss to complement the Innoface
pvc that was
launched to match the Egger
U717 MFC,” said Mr Quant.
The feedback to two of the
company’s stone PVCs was
also described as “excellent” by Mr Quant. These are high quality reproductions
which provide panel manufacturers with effective natural materials.
Inaugural Design in Manufacturing Awards
CoffeeProof from Movac: Just one of the innovative entries in the
inaugural Design in Manufacturing Awards.
The winning award being presented to Jim and Neil Burgess of
Curvomatic by John Legg of Gearing Media.
chrome design created by COSMA,
which is easily fitted to a prerouted
groove on the top of a
plain white or toned MFC door.
Says EDP’s Terry Willett, “We believe
that this type of styling from
COSMA is exactly what Design in
Manufacturing is all about.”
For Movac, the shortlisting was
for CoffeeProof from Sayerlack, a
waterborne coating which, as its
name suggests, is able to resist coffee
stains. The company states that
just 24 hours after application, cold
coffee stains will not show: the
same applies to hot coffee spilt at
least 72 hours after application.
W12 REVIEW
The Kündig Brilliant on show at W12.
J & C O’MEARA was delighted with the interest in its full range of products at W12, with
the sales team’s feet barely touching the ground during the course of
the show.
The star of the show for the company
was the Genisis briquetter, pictured
below. Suitable for compacting various
materials such as light and heavy saw
dust with a minimum/maximum moisture content
of 8-14%, the briquetter is suitable for use
with cork dust, bark and off-cuts of natural fibre,
for example. The latest series are equipped with a
Siemens touch screen interface.
Alongside the well established Genisis panel saw range, pictured right, there was the first
showing of the new Genisis hinge drilling and boring machines including the unique Scorpion, a three
head borer specifically designed to make the pre drilling for cam and dowel fixings an easy task.
The hinge borers are available as a manual bench top
machine allowing it to be used for taking to site or as an
automatic machine with pneumatic clamping and foot
pedal operation. The machines can be specified to be used
for FGV, BLUM, Grass, Hettich, Häfele, etc.
Brilliant Kündig at W12
THE TEAM on the Kündig stand were kept busy throughout W12,
meeting up both with potential new customers as well as a lot of existing
customers who are very happy with their machines.
“On Sunday it was almost like Kündig club day!” commented Kündig
UK’s Carl O’Meara, adding that it was “fantastic to see all the existing
clients”, many of whom have been featured within the trade press. Busy
on most days from the time the show opened until it closed, Carl commented,
“It just seemed to be non-stop!”.
The star machine on the stand was the Kündig Brilliant: see page 16 for
a report on a satisfied customer who has recently purchased a Kündig Brilliant
machine complete with the lacquer finishing option.
“There were lots of enquiries,” Carl reports, adding that “The people we
spoke to were making serious enquiries: there was a lot of in-depth talk
about the capabilities of the various machines, and we are expecting a lot
of enquiries to follow during the coming months.”
He adds, “There was a high level of interest from high end, bespoke
manufacturers looking for a machine that could give a superior finish,
particularly when working with high end veneers and lacquer finishing.
This is exactly the position within the market where Kündig sits.”
The OMC press (pictured above) also proved popular, with a number of serious enquiries
being received, several of which arose as a result of the article featuring the press in the
October issue of this journal. Enquiries were also received for the vacuum press, as well as the
Hofmann range of heavy duty, high quality spindle moulders.
The company was delighted with the wide range of enquiries across its broad product range.
W12 REVIEW
Impressions of W12 from a first time exhibitor
W12 MARKED the first experience
of exhibiting for this publication
at any exhibition. In common
with many exhibitors, we have
been asked the question, “How
do you feel the show went?”.
Often this is measured in the
number of visitors to the stand,
how busy you were, your impression
of how busy the show was as
a whole, as well as orders taken.
My measure of success was how
accurately had I judged the number
of magazines I would be able
to distribute off the stand: since I
only had about 50 to take home
with me when I started with 1,000,
this was pretty good going!
With my daughter, Christina,
taking time off from her regular
restaurant job to come to the
show to assist on the stand on the
second and third days, I had the
opportunity to go out and about
and get a feel for how the show
was going for other exhibitors.
We were tucked away at the far
end of Working With Design, and
there is no doubt that Working
David Clouting was just one of the stands providing the opportunity
to keep up with the latest in design trends.
Live demonstrations, such as this one of the Vitap Eclipse on the RW Machines stand, are an
important part of any exhibition.
With Wood was busier. Several
stand holders reported being busy
on a regular basis from the time
the show opened until it closed,
and with others the best time to
talk to them was either in the first
hour or the final hour, before most
visitors arrived or after most had
left. In our location, the number of
visitors would fall off earlier in the
day: but I think that was in part because
we were at the edge. From
where I was positioned I could see
visitors further in the exhibition
congregating on other stands, but
not making it as far as our area.
In not coming this far out, they
missed out on some treats: such as
Television Lifts Ltd, situated opposite,
with its lifts ascending and
descending within built in cabinets,
showing their versatility; or
the castors on display on the Guy-
Raymond stand; or the range of
products exhibited by Mohawk
Finishing Products (UK) Ltd.
But it’s easily done: I know that
even after being round the show
several times, with specific destinations
in mind, I could be surprised
to find new stands at the
extremes of the Working With
Wood show that I had previously
been unaware of.
Moral of the story: When you
visit a show, try to make sure you
walk all the gangways. Otherwise,
you never know what unexpected
discovery you may miss out on!
The stand holders in Working
With Design had produced some
very attractive stands, and it was a
very pleasant show to walk
through. And from our stand, we
had a wonderful view looking further
out into the exhibition. As
well as the stands opposite, we
could see Mundy Veneer; David
Clouting; Movac; all with
attractive displays.
My impression from previous
shows is that numbers are down:
it will be interesting to see what
the official figures released by the
organisers are, both for people
attending and for numbers of
companies represented.
While there is concern in some
quarters that the fact that people
are scanned each time they enter
means that people may be
counted multiple times, the fact
that data for W10 is also available
showing the number of com -
panies, necessarily less than the
number of visitors, indicates that
the case of the Working With
Wood/Working With Design figures,
visitor numbers are an accurate
reflection of the number of
people attending the show, not
simply the number of times a
badge was scanned.
If the number of visitors is down
on previous years, this is no doubt
due to the fact that the economy
still needs to pick up, although
there were signs at the show from
W12 REVIEW
Television Lifts Ltd demonstrated mechanisms for raising and
lowering both televisions (right) and other units (left) concealed
within cabinets. Christina has decided that she wants one …
talking to visitors that business is
significantly better this autumn
than it had been earlier in the year:
has the turning point that will lead
to recovery been reached?
And the feed back on the quality
of visitors from any stand
holder that you speak to is overwhelmingly
positive: all report
valuable enquiries from those seriously
interested in taking purchasing
decisions, emphasising
the point that it is quality, not
quantity, that counts.
Exhibitions have a particularly
valuable role to play for the carpenters,
joiners, shopfitters,
kitchen fitters and furniture manufacturers
that make up the readership
of this publication. They
provide an opportunity to compare
machines from several competitors
side by side, to see in the
live demonstrations how equipment
will actually perform and get
a sense of the quality of the build.
At Working With Wood it was
possible to visit the SCM, Weinig,
Curvomatic won first prize in the inaugural Design in Manufacturing
Awards, with the award (pictured in the foreground) being
presented at Working With Design.
Just a sample of the range available on the Mundy Veneer stand.
Kündig, Schelling, TM Machinery,
Sagetech, RW Machinery, Felder
stands and many others and compare
and contrast the machines
you were interested in and maybe
discover something you had not
previously considered. Just look
through the pages of this review
section as well as last month’s preview
(available for free download
from our website) for a flavour of
what was on offer: there are too
many to list here!
In terms of software, Joinery -
soft, Cabinet Vision and Alphacam
were all present at Working With
Wood, along with many companies,
including Delcam and
Magi-Cut, on show in Working
With Design: a good chance to
compare and contrast the various
programs, to find the one that is
right for your needs.
Need a phase converter? The
Power Capacitors Ltd stand may
well have had something to match
your needs.
Interested in developing your
skills? Training provider Didac was
present, along with the British
Woodworking Federation, whose
new training initiative was
launched at the show.
Wanting to keep up to date
with the latest design trends? So
many of the stands at Working
With Design had so much that was
new and vibrant, it would be impossible
to mention them all.
The list goes on …
Wood waste control and dust
extraction are vital in any workshop:
the show included stands
from Dust Control Systems, Fercell,
Ecogate, Wood Waste Control
(Engineering) Ltd, Talbott’s, Air
Plants, Scanhugger, Wood Waste
Technology and, on the Schelling
stand, ASM: a great deal of variety
all under one roof for the four days
of the show.
The key question for any first
time exhibitor is, I guess, would I
exhibit again? The answer: yes, we
have already reserved our stand
for W14. At W12 the organisers
were very helpful and ensured
that everything ran smoothly, and
were a pleasure to work with.
It was good to meet readers of
this publication, and to see their
positive response to it. It was also
good to see the range of new technology
and equipment coming on
stream and, in time, going into
workshops up and down the country,
exemplified by the inaugural
Design in Manufacturing award,
presented at Working With Design.
Here’s looking forward to W14!
