Trends – Dr. Leon Kagan
9:10 Senior Friendly Smoking Cessation: Tobacco Control in
older Adults – Dr. Charl Els
Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of preventable death,
disease, and disability in Canada. The elderly population
poses special challenges for the healthcare provider when it
comes to tobacco control. This presentation will focus on the
challenges of safe and effective treatment of tobacco
dependence in older adults. A comprehensive approach to
tobacco control in this population will be presented.
10:30 On the Run Refreshment Break and Poster Viewing
11:00 Concurrent Sessions
A1.Stigma: An Ethical Problem – Cheryl Webster, Dipl
Psych Nrs, RN, PhD(c), Capital Health, Edmonton, AB
This presentation will challenge the audience to think about
stigma as an ethical issue. Ethicists using a relational ethic
framework believe that prejudice, oppression, discrimination
and stigma arise due to a lack of a relationship. Very few
researchers have discussed or explored the ethical consequences
of stigma from the perspective of those who do the
stigmatizing. When the stigmatizers are healthcare professionals
the negative effects can result in reduced treatment
efficacy and efficiency.
A2. A Road Less Travelled: Drumming for Health – Darlene
Brandt, BSW, RSW; Faika Satterthwaite, Reg. RTII; Mary Jo
Danko, BMR(OT), Rockyview General Hospital, Calgary, AB
Drumming and rhythm reconnects us to that universal rhythm
inside ourselves, the community and the world around us.
This presentation will be an interactive session based on a
specific step by step protocol, that has been used to introduce
drumming to an inpatient geriatric mental health population.
Our efforts are intended to serve as an incentive for others to
integrate group drumming as an adjunctive intervention within
traditional medicine.
A3. Nearing the End of the Road: What’s Important?
Relationships! – Carol Hoyt, MSW, RSW, Glenrose Rehabilitation
Hospital, Edmonton, AB
Establishing relationships with patients/family is the underpinning
to the work we do as professional health care workers.
Relationships are much more than the “dyad” of health care
worker and patient/family. This presentation will examine what
we as individuals and team can do to enhance our relationships
with patients/family and how we can assist in enhancing
their relationships through our therapeutic interventions.
12:00 Lunch at the Roadside Diner and Poster Viewing
1:00 Concurrent Sessions
B1. What About Me? The Termination of a Senior’s
Psychotherapy Group – Jodey Sharman, OT(C), Rockyview
General Hospital, Calgary, AB
This presentation will tell the story of the ending of a seniors
long term psychotherapy group due to mandate changes
in the department. The group members and therapists’
reactions, the therapeutic impact of the imposed ending, the
group’s attempts to advocate, and the therapists’ struggles
will be presented.
B2. Beginning the Dementia Journey: Support Groups
for People with Early Stage Dementia – Jackie Gendre,
BSc,HEc; Arlene Huhn, BPE; Alison McWalter, M. Phil.,
Registered Psychologist, Alzheimer Society of Alberta and
Northwest Territories, Edmonton, AB
Discover the social and psychological benefits of support
groups for people in the early stages of dementia and their
caregivers. The Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest
Territories will share their experience in developing and
facilitating support groups for these clients. Examples of
group work and participant experiences will be included.
B3. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Competency Assessment:
Journeying From the Psychological to the Narrative –
Angela Thachuk, PhD Candidate; Dr. Yvonne Legris, Royal
Alexandra Hospital, Edmonton, AB
This presentation will review the psychological assessment of
competency and the complimentary use of a narrative ethics
approach. The integration of both strategies lends itself to a
more comprehensive assessment that illustrates the fluid and
contextualized nature of competency. The simultaneous
application of these strategies will be described as well as the
anticipated results. Previous effects observed demonstrate
that this integrative approach to competency assessments
creates a greater forum for the voice of the patient to be
heard.
2:10 Concurrent Sessions
C1. If I Have to Turn Around One More Time: Why Families
Fight – Dr. Brian Mirtle; Doug Stein, RPN, RSW, Glenrose
Rehabilitation Hospital, Edmonton, AB
Families and older couples can experience difficulties negotiating
role transitions, shifts in the balance of power, and coping
with multiple losses and bereavements. When identified, these
dynamics can all be focal points for therapeutic interventions
by clinicians who work with elders and their families.

Poster Presentations
C2. The Chimo Project: Animal Assisted Therapy for
Mental Health – Kristine Aanderson, Program Manager,
Chimo Project, Edmonton, AB
The Chimo Project is an innovative non-profit organization
that facilitates the use of Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) to
help those with mental illness. With the help of the Chimo
Project, Alberta Hospital Edmonton (AHE) has instituted AAT
as a facility-wide treatment option. Initial evaluations of AHE
geriatric psychiatry clients in animal assisted therapy show
improvements in mood and most clients meeting or exceeding
their treatment goals. From the success of AAT at Alberta
Hospital Edmonton, the Chimo Project is expanding to
provide AAT at the Association of Adult Day Support Programs
(AADSP) and the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.
C3. Taking the High Road: Spirituality-Based Group
Psychotherapy for the Elderly – Dr. William Chimich; Rev.
Ken Herfindahl, Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, Edmonton, AB
This presentation will examine the clinical importance of
existential despair, depression and spirituality in late life.
Clinical observations and empirical findings suggest that
spirituality may facilitate the coping process, enhance quality
of life and serve as a resilient protective factor against
existential suffering and despair. During this session, a novel
spirituality-centered psychotherapy group for depressed
elderly patients will be described. Additionally, a clinical
framework for the enhancement of meaning, integrity and
hope in the elderly will be highlighted.
3:10 Grab and Go Refreshments
