valid for a l<strong>on</strong>g time, because from his collecti<strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> plants (some seen in Kew by <strong>the</strong> author), he was<br />
able “to impress his estimate <strong>of</strong> specific range <strong>on</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> phanerogamic flora <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
subc<strong>on</strong>tintent.” (Burkill,1992).<br />
A useful reference <strong>of</strong> significance to new<br />
collecti<strong>on</strong>s in general was borne in up<strong>on</strong> van<br />
Steenis: “large collecti<strong>on</strong>s (well identified) are<br />
useful; hundreds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>of</strong> a species are not too<br />
many.” And with <strong>the</strong> impending extincti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
some <strong>of</strong> our species in <strong>the</strong> country, <strong>the</strong> need for yet<br />
more collecti<strong>on</strong>s is still urgent.<br />
Increased new collecti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> active field<br />
botanists like Kostermans have c<strong>on</strong>tributed<br />
significantly to enlarge <strong>the</strong> inventory <strong>of</strong> many<br />
species, and had given him <strong>the</strong> distincti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
“having helped to bring toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> largest<br />
<strong>on</strong>e-man collecti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> plants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country “<br />
(1992).<br />
On <strong>the</strong> whole, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Flora</strong> Project’s work had<br />
still <strong>the</strong> advantage <strong>of</strong> many o<strong>the</strong>r overall, new<br />
material collected in floristic explorati<strong>on</strong>s during<br />
<strong>the</strong> accelerated period <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> twentieth century in<br />
<strong>the</strong> midst <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fast disappearance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> natural<br />
forests. Richards (1970) against <strong>the</strong> present<br />
destructi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vegetati<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong> tropics,<br />
comments <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> still remaining collecting<br />
opportunities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period, and remarks: “<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong> is unmistakable: now is <strong>the</strong> best<br />
opportunity for studying tropical botany --- <strong>the</strong>re<br />
will never be a better <strong>on</strong>e….<strong>the</strong>re is a heavy<br />
resp<strong>on</strong>sibility to use this brief moment well.” <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
related advantage <strong>of</strong> all such new collecti<strong>on</strong>s is<br />
that <strong>the</strong>y have invariably stepped up <strong>the</strong> progress<br />
in <strong>the</strong> revisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Flora</strong>; thus wrote Trimen in<br />
his time: “<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> compilati<strong>on</strong> and publicati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
revised list <strong>of</strong> plants <strong>of</strong> any country marks a new<br />
stage <strong>of</strong> progress in <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> its botany.”<br />
DESCRIPTIONS<br />
Descripti<strong>on</strong>s in <strong>the</strong> Revised <strong>Flora</strong>, <strong>the</strong> product<br />
<strong>of</strong> systematic studies <strong>of</strong> our plants, have been as<br />
complete and precise as those made by Trimen in<br />
his time, and have high-lighted <strong>the</strong> range <strong>of</strong><br />
tax<strong>on</strong>omic characters as far down as to those <strong>of</strong><br />
seed morphology, thus helping in distinctly<br />
circumscribing taxa and fur<strong>the</strong>r providing a<br />
reas<strong>on</strong>able portrait <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> related plants to <strong>the</strong><br />
reader.<br />
SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATIONS<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> lack <strong>of</strong> plant illustrati<strong>on</strong>s in <strong>the</strong> Revised<br />
<strong>Flora</strong>, except for a few examples, as seen, for<br />
instance, in those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gesneriaceae, Moraceae<br />
and Dioscoreaceae, has been a general drawback<br />
to <strong>the</strong> family treatments; this was chiefly due to<br />
<strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> a sufficient work time-scale in <strong>the</strong><br />
persevering efforts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual authors.<br />
In passing, menti<strong>on</strong> may also be made here <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> past set <strong>of</strong> scientific illustrati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> our plants,<br />
like that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reputed collecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> Harmanis de<br />
Alwis Seneviratne, <strong>the</strong> splendid artist <strong>of</strong><br />
Peradeniya under Alexander Mo<strong>on</strong>’s staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
time. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>se have been frequently c<strong>on</strong>sulted by <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Flora</strong> Project botanists. In all, <strong>the</strong> artist served at<br />
<strong>the</strong> herbarium <strong>of</strong> Peradeniya from 1823-1861, and<br />
was created a Mudaliyar in 1834. His prized<br />
collecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> drawings was well preserved in <strong>the</strong><br />
Nati<strong>on</strong>al Herbarium <strong>of</strong> Peradeniya all <strong>the</strong>se many<br />
years, but was suddenly removed in 1999 to <strong>the</strong><br />
Nati<strong>on</strong>al Museum <strong>of</strong> Colombo. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> unwise move,<br />
a loss to active botanists at <strong>the</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
Herbarium, was str<strong>on</strong>gly opposed by <strong>the</strong> scientific<br />
community <strong>of</strong> Peradeniya.<br />
DISTRIBUTION AND ECOLOGY<br />
As a result <strong>of</strong> extensive field explorati<strong>on</strong>s in<br />
<strong>the</strong> country, <strong>the</strong> respective ranges <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
geographical distributi<strong>on</strong> and ecological<br />
adaptability <strong>of</strong> plants have been more widened and<br />
given fur<strong>the</strong>r informati<strong>on</strong> than those noted in<br />
Trimen’s <strong>Flora</strong>.<br />
CRITICAL NOTES<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>se commentaries, arising from<br />
investigati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> new collecti<strong>on</strong>s especially, and<br />
appended separately to <strong>the</strong> descriptive accounts <strong>of</strong><br />
taxa, mark <strong>the</strong> original observati<strong>on</strong>s made by <strong>the</strong><br />
authors to bring out in relief a plant’s particular<br />
characteristics not emphasized ahead in <strong>the</strong><br />
author’s general account <strong>of</strong> it; in doing so <strong>the</strong><br />
authors have enhanced <strong>the</strong> reader’s knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />
many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong>n flowering plants. Some <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>se notes had been carefully recorded before in<br />
<strong>the</strong> Ceyl<strong>on</strong> Journal <strong>of</strong> Science (Biological<br />
Sciences).
