Scientific Context • Earth observing satellites are a unique tool with which to objectively monitor terrestrial environments at the global scale. • Temporal changes in the biosphere can be monitored using advanced methods to interpret remote sensing data. • The aim of these methods is to provide measurable parameters representing the state of the terrestrial surfaces. • These remote sensing products constitute reliable indicators of the evolution of the living biosphere. • In practice, one does acquire the measurements from the satellite, and would like to know what is going on in the environment: This is the inverse problem: Knowing the value of the electromagnetic measurements gathered in space, how can we derive the properties of the environment that were responsible for the radiation to reach the sensor? 2
