South West Peninsula Deanery Faculty Development News Feedback on recent courses attended Course 4: “Helped clarify structures— improved confidence” “It would be useful to discuss some real cases that have happened in the past, particularly how they were dealt with and what were the problems” “Helped define who to approach for help” “More aware now of careers guidance resources” “Very good interactive session” “Identified indicators for trainees in difficulty” “Good amount of information for reference for referral for advice” “Discussion format worked well” Extra topics that could have been covered: “Fitness to practice regulations, GMC role, further reading, references” “Demo of talking to a trainee without insight” Staff Highlight Kris Earl Front of House Administrator Born in Torquay and schooled in Plymouth, Kris is a bright, strong willed and independent individual. Coming from an estate agency background, Kris joined the South West Peninsula Deanery in November 2009 when the organisation relocated to their new premises on the Tamar Science Park. Although her main role is the Front of House Administrator she also provides support to the Business Support & Facilities Manager. Always looking for new challenges Kris recently completed her NVQ 3 in Administration. NHS South of England officially came into effect on 3rd October 2011, made up of three former strategic health authorities – NHS South Central, NHS South East Coast and NHS South West. The new “cluster” organisation held its first Board meeting in Newbury, confirming Dr Geoff Harris as Chair and Sir Ian Carruthers OBE as Chief Executive. Page 3 South West Peninsula Deanery Faculty Development News The Future—Dr Martin Davis, Associate Dean for Faculty Development The Deanery programme for Supervisor Training has been adapted in response to feedback from Supervisors attending the courses. The changes have reduced the amount of time to complete training and adjusted content to make it more applicable to your role and attempts to avoid duplication. It remains necessary for all named supervisors to have completed the required training by the end of 2013. Completion can be achieved by attending the courses the Deanery are running or providing evidence that you have completed equivalent training elsewhere. The details for the courses and providing evidence of equivalent are on the SWPD website. A number of Supervisors have enquired about the necessity for updating training and what format this would take. Once the initial training has been undertaken there is no expectation that individuals will need to repeat these courses. There will be a necessity to provide evidence of on-going engagement with the training process to ensure that your knowledge and expertise in postgraduate medical education is updated. The evidence for this can be tailored to meet the individual Supervisors needs e.g. attendance at national specialty meeting related to this topic, attendance at Deanery organised sessions on specific topic etc. The Deanery will not be prescriptive about this, but will require evidence of engagement on a regular basis, consistent with the job role you are undertaking. More detail on this will follow later in the year. The recognition and consequent approval of the trainer role in medical education is necessary to facilitate the provision of high quality postgraduate medical education. It is a priority of the GMC and the Deanery. If successfully implemented it should lead to an acknowledgement by your employer of its importance. More detail of this can be found on the GMC website. School Highlight—Paediatrics The School of Paediatrics has seen a consolidation of working processes with continuity provided by Michael Quinn as Head of School and Kumar Yadlapalli as Training Programme Director over the last 4 years. These have included introduction of annual within School appraisals of the Trust RCPCH tutors and TPD. One of the outcomes of these has been agreement by the Deanery to appoint an additional TPD to support the ST1 -3 training programme. The School continues to recruit enthusiastic and motivated trainees into the 8 year run through Paediatric programme. We conduct a local appointment process in Plymouth with a ratio of 2 applicants for every ST1 post equivalent to the national average. Following feedback from the Associate Deans for assessment about trainees’ perception of the ARCP process, we developed a change of approach in which each panel member was given responsibility for assessing the e portfolios of trainees prior to the panel review. Improved representation of all Trusts on the ARCP panel allowed for more time to give formative feedback having addressed the “tick-box” components of the exercise beforehand. This was noted by the external advisor from Wales who provided a very positive report on the process. The trainees appreciated the opportunity to discuss career progression. Our College has introduced a GMC approved pe- nultimate year assessment (START or Specialty Trainee Assessment of Readiness for Tenure) in ST7 to determine readiness for consultant practice. All trainees who have entered Level 3 training (ST6-8) on or after 1 August 2011 will be required to undertake START before applying for their CCT. The first assessments will take place on 9/10 th November 2012 in London having being piloted on 2 groups of trainees. START assesses many aspects of practice in 12 eight minute stations including handover, teaching, conflict/risk management and prescribing. All assessors receive training and there are 2 representatives from the Peninsula. There has been excellent engagement of Peninsula consultants with the deanery educational supervisor training programme indicating a clear desire of the vast majority to remain actively involved with educational supervision. Simulation training has moved forward with a clear School strategy for workplace based training in individual Trusts. This was the basis of the successful innovation fund bid which secured funding for Training the Trainers courses. There is interest in setting up our own Stepping up to Registrar (currently purchased from Severn) and Neonatal Key competencies courses. There were 3 applications to the Innovation fund this year.
