7 th and 8 th Grade Hunter Middle School Non-Fiction Book Suggestions
Summer 2012
Directions: All students must read a MINIMUM of THREE books on their level during the summer prior to entering the
7 th or 8 th grade. One book should be from the Summer Book Club Reading List, the second should be a fiction book of
choice, and the third should be a non-fiction book of choice. A fourth book can be completed for extra credit. Students
who complete five or more books and the corresponding assignments will be able to participate in Hunter Middle
School’s “Summer Reading Celebration” in the fall. There are corresponding assignments to complete with each
book. These assignments, as well as the summer book club list and suggested fiction titles list, can be found on our
website (www.hunterhawks.net). The following non-fiction books are suggestions, we encourage students to read books
that they are interested in, but it is also important for students to read books on their level. You do not have to read from
this list if you have a non-fiction book in mind. Most of our non-fiction book list is leveled from easiest to most
difficult; however some are not leveled. If you are unsure of your reading level, or the level of a particular
book remember this tip:
TIP: Remember the five finger rule. If you open a book to any page and make five or more mistakes while
reading the page, the book is probably too hard for you. READ ON YOUR LEVEL.
*Parents/Guardians: We strongly encourage you to be involved in your child’s book choices. Books vary in level
and content, please help your child make appropriate choices as this list accommodates the diversity of middle
school readers.
