artists and how Cezanne started this new art
style.
45 minutes - 1 hour
Middle School
(see attached)
Students will learn how to create six different
values from one pencil using crosshatching and
different amounts of pressure. They will also learn
how to shade using complementary colors.
Materials: PLEASE NOTE:
Some materials must be
acquired prior to this lesson
1) #2 regular drawing pencil and a set of colored
pencils
2) Drawing paper (newsprint is an inexpensive
paper to use)
Introductory activity
3) Optional "stump" or tortillon
(1) Begin by introducing Cezanne's paintings and
describe how he felt that apples "told" him that
they wanted their portraits painted. Also describe
what the Post-Impressionistic period of art was.
Core activity
(1) Have students pick up their drawing pencils
and instruct them on how they can get 6 different
color values from one pencil using the 3 types of
pressure-squeezing the pencil like you were
squeezing the neck of a chicken, holding the
pencil like you are writing a letter and holding the
pencil in such a way that if someone bumped you
it would fall out of your hand.
2) Instruct the students as to how a colored
pencil can be used in the same manner.
Closure activity
(3) Show students how to create shadows using
the cross-hatching method and the opposite color
on the color wheel to create great form and
texture.
Have students share their value projects and talk
about how they felt holding the pencil in different
ways. Let them describe the complementary
colors that they would use if they were drawing a
red, blue, or yellow piece of fruit.
Assessment
Teacher follow-up idea
Student follow-up activity
Students will learn how to create 6 different
values from one drawing pencil and use
crosshatching to describe an apple that has form
and shape by also combining a colored pencil the
color of the fruit and its complement.
Place some different pieces of fruit on a display
table and have students try to use this method to
create a realistic depiction of it.
Using fruit that you have at home, continue
practicing this method and try to combine colored
pencils in combination with the drawing pencil.
