misunderstanding of Phil’s character. He was not precisely<br />

secretive, and didn’t tend to lie about things like this. He<br />

could be evasive and difficult, sure, but his tendency was<br />

more to talk surprisingly openly to strangers, than to have<br />

big secrets carefully kept from friends and the world.<br />

No big deal. Just some comments for what it’s worth.<br />

Yeah, Phil’s “fear” and love of LSD can be felt in his books,<br />

but it is almost certain it can be felt as well in certain novels<br />

written before he ever took the stuff. (He intuited the<br />

experience before he had it chemically, maybe via a touch<br />

of schizophrenia or who knows what.) I haven’t got the<br />

time or all the right references nearby to give a full chronology<br />

at the moment, but some thoughts off the top of<br />

my head, grist for the mill.<br />

PS: if you do trip alone, be careful about reading <strong>PKD</strong><br />

novels while you do so....<br />
