Just last year we spoke about dreams, how they’re the children of our soul. How they give us the 

courage to think a little bigger, try a little harder, reach a little further. 

While we believe in dreaming big, we know that taking action is what really turns those dreams 

into tangible reality. The journey begins with one step, which leads to another, remains tempered 

with perseverance and unwavering hope, and then, at last, we’ve reached our destination side by side. 

Our journey toward a dream began last year when we broke ground on what will become the 

new Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. A big step, to be sure, but only the first one. Our community 

of supporters is guiding the way now through the actions they take. We’re more than inspired as 

they go beyond — as they move us beyond dreams and edge us toward the day we open our doors, 

leading us from our exceptional past toward our extraordinary future.

Letter From the president 

It certainly has been a year of progress for Elmhurst Memorial 

Healthcare. In May of 2008, we broke ground on the new Elmhurst 

Memorial Hospital. Today, the framework is in place, much of the 

brick work is completed and what was once just a vision has now 

become a reality. 

And while there is still much work to be done before we open in 

Fall 2011, we could not have gotten this far without the efforts of our 

employees, physicians, donors, volunteers and the entire construction 

team. So the journey continues — and your support and commitment 

over the next two years will be key as we move closer and closer to 

opening our new doors. 

Many people over the past several months have remarked to me 

that when they drive past the new site, they are taken aback — by the 

size, the quick progress, the promise that this building holds for the 

future health of our communities. We take great pride in those comments 

and are thankful to all those who recognize the benefits that our new 

facility will bring for many years to come.

Over the past year, we have been humbled and grateful for the 

work and dedication of our volunteers, our donors and our local 

communities, who have come together to support Elmhurst 

Memorial Healthcare. It is your vision, commitment and generosity 

that inspires us and encourages others to join our cause, to be a 

part of our history. Whether you supported one of our four special 

events, made an annual gift or donated in any other number of 

ways, we thank you. 

Our donors, both individuals and corporate, are paving the 

way as we move forward with the Exceptional Past, Extraordinary 

Future capital campaign. We are thankful for all of those who 

have contributed to the over $12 million received toward our 

goal. Please know that every gift, regardless of size, is both 

important and appreciated. 

As our journey toward the new Elmhurst Memorial Hospital 

continues, we have made many new friends and become 

reacquainted with old ones — each with a unique story and 

reason why they support our organization. In the pages ahead, 

you will meet some of these people and hear their stories. They 

think they are just ordinary people, but we feel differently — as 

they have given to the Foundation in truly extraordinary ways. 

As you read their stories, you will find a common thread that 

runs through all of them — one of generations. For many, 

Elmhurst Memorial Hospital has been part of their families, their 

workplace, their lives, for generations — we see this as an 

honor, a responsibility and a privilege. And now, we prepare 

to care for future generations with a state-of-the-art hospital and 

the same basic principle that was in place when the Hospital 

originally opened in 1926 — to provide the best possible care 

for our patients.

to the new hospital, in addition to giving as individuals and providing leadership

They see patients at vulnerable times, times that cannot be 

planned for and often are not prepared for. They see it all, 

treat it all and at the end of the day try and leave it all as they 

walk out the emergency room doors. But something brings them 

back — back for committee meetings and events on their days 

off, back for commitments made both as a group and as 

individuals. As Medical Director of Emergency Services, this 

selfless giving makes Dr. Fred Jacobs proud. As a longtime 

supporter of the Foundation, he understands that in giving, 

you also receive … and that’s a win-win for everyone.

Kickoff for Kids 

Everyone who came into Riley’s Gathering Place loved Diana 

Riley. Her smile filled the room, her kind nature warmed hearts, 

and children loved her as much as she loved them. Diana died 

suddenly last year, leaving behind devastated family members 

and friends. Steve, her husband of just three months, asked that 

all memorials support the charity Kickoff for Kids, which pledged 

$30,000 to create two Kid Zones in the new Hospital. Now, 

even in her death, children will still feel Diana’s compassion.

each year during the holidays, elmhurst resident art biddle mails a card to 

his surgeon, dr. gabriel ubatuba, which simply says, “i’m still alive.” he often 

sees his primary care physician, dr. phillip cozzi, “so he knows,” says biddle. 

When three generations rely on the same hospital for three 

decades, they get to know the place. And when one man credits 

his physicians for saving his life, it really gets personal. So in 

gratitude, Art Biddle and his wife made a donation and became 

part of the transformation. He did it to show his appreciation and 

his respect; he did it for the next generation. Now he brings his 

grandson, Liam, to watch the new building go up. Someday, 

Liam may be a grandfather, too, with his own stories to tell.

Although the Immaculate Conception High School’s volleyball 

teams are skilled competitors, the coaches know that they are 

not just building athletes — they are building character. The 

teams demonstrated this last fall by organizing the Volley for 

a Cure event at their school and raising $3,000 — more than 

they could have imagined — to support breast health services 

at the Hospital. While a net separated the girls from their rival 

school’s teams, a sense of community brought them together. 

That night, it was clear that this was more than just a game.

pride as she witnessed the excitement and drive of the girls as they worked 

together to create a truly memorable experience for a greater good.

We don’t automatically donate 

money to customers just because 

they’re a not-for-profit. We do “ it 

when we see a good cause. And the 

Hospital is a very good cause.

of meade electric. both meade electric and the 

lizzadro family have supported elmhurst 

memorial healthcare for many years, in many 

ways – including event support, annual giving 

and a capital campaign commitment. for them, 

it is an investment beyond family or work; it is 

an investment for generations to come. 

It was 1916 when a young Italian immigrant, 

Joseph Lizzadro, went to work digging trenches 

for Meade Electric. You probably could not have 

convinced him then that one day he would be 

chairman of the board. Now, three generations 

of Lizzadros maintain a tie to Meade and its 

closely related businesses, and charitably support 

solid organizations in need of help. Doing so is 

not always easy; investing in the future takes 

foresight and courage. But someone has to dig 

the trenches, and in this case, Meade has always 

been right there — a part of the Hospital’s past 

and now an invaluable part of our future. 

There are numerous ways that corporations 

can contribute to the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital 

Foundation including annual gifts, campaign 

support, special event sponsorships and underwriting, 

and in-kind donations for our live and silent auctions.

Nancy Borngraber was a no-nonsense type. She had already 

retired from nursing at Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare and 

was an active Guild member and volunteer when Lora Vega, 

current Director of Volunteer Services, joined the staff. Lora 

would remind her to turn in her hours for credit. Nancy would 

tell her that she wasn’t doing it for credit. Lora would visit Nancy 

when she became ill. And Nancy would ask her how she was. 

When Nancy died, she named the Foundation in her will, 

showing once again that she expected nothing in return.
