perspective against the complex background of disordered physiology which characterises the
pulmonary diseases. Efficient gas transfer across the alveolar membrane, effective distribution of
blood through the capillary bed and efficient alveolar ventilation are addressed. Overall ventilatory
capacity and the rationale of physiotherapy in pulmonary disease is discussed, and the need for
studies to demonstrate the value of breathing exercises in pulmonary disease is highlighted.
