A few months ago, I wrote about problems we
were experiencing with CAMS, and included the
following note –“Within such an organization, while
the structure and constitution may be appropriate,
micro-management and individual decisions
made by key individuals still have a great bearing
on the effectiveness of the organization. At the
moment I think CAMS is tending to lean in the
wrong direction.”
With the CEO, Graham Fountain now having left
to another pasture, it will be interesting to see
where the organization goes. I believe Graham
did have some good attributes and he certainly
changed the face of CAMS in the few years he
was there, but he also changed the image of CAMS
in a way that was leaving the members confused
and frustrated at times, and downright insulted
at other times.
When the organization is primarily there to service
the members and assist them in their desire
to enjoy their chosen form of motorsport, their
needs have to be paramount and we hope that
CAMS can get back to presenting this face to
the world. There is still every opportunity for
this to happen because they are not financially
broke (although a struggle each year) and they
have some very good people working there. It
is just a different type of leadership that is
needed, one that brings out the best in the staff
and the members, and is still able to deal with
the business of keeping CAMS respected, stable
and in credit.
I know it has been a difficult time for Angus Black,
our Victorian delegate to the CAMS Board, and for
David Bellenger who is Chairman of the Victorian
Sport and Development Council, but I have no doubt
they have not run out of steam yet, and will be in
there doing what they can to recover lost ground
and reinstate the goodwill that is necessary to keep
it all heading in the right direction. PIARC is still
prepared to strongly support the CAMS concept
and would hope that we get asked to assist when
that is appropriate.
The Victorian Task Force is still in existence and
it will be interesting to see where this goes now
that the Chairman (the CEO) is no longer in that
role. No findings or comments have been issued at
this time so we are yet to find out what direction
it is taking but I am led to believe they have had
a number of good submissions and a fair bit of
material to work on.
On another subject all together, the 75 th
Australian Grand Prix has been run and won, and
again we have presented a world-class event to the
fans. While there were some management issues
that need to be sorted out, the actual events on
the track all went off with the usual drama,
titillated by rain right at the start of the AGP itself.
With that, and the deletion of fuel stops, the race
maintained a high level of interest right through
and was one of the better GP in recent years.
Cont.
access to motor sport
The support events created their own dramas and
did not reflect too well on our local motor racing
scene. A number of events, primarily GT and Formula
Ford, had to be stopped with the red flag
and were not able to be re-started because of
time limitations. In each case above, the spread
of debris and oil was too extensive for it to be
cleaned up under the Safety Car control and hence
the red flags.
Race driving at this level must be about skill and
not raw aggression and most major incidents tend
to come from displays of aggression rather than
skill. Unfortunately, this appears to be a missed
lesson to too many drivers. The Brocks and Richards
of the world have always demonstrated the
highest level of skill and their clean racing never
left us disappointed or frustrated. Nor did it leave
other drivers with abandoned races, or with big
repair bills.
It is difficult for officials to control
over-aggression because it can be too subtle to
show up on the TV screen much of the time, but
my belief is that we must take more action. This
applies to wheels in the dirt, cutting corners,
dangerous re-entry, weaving, charging into spaces
too small to be possible and other similar actions
which we are all familiar with. We have to tone all
this down to what “we all” agree is tolerable for
the sake of the 95% of drivers who do not carry
out those practices.
To act further, I believe Race Control and
senior Track Officials need to sit down and fully
agree on what is considered unacceptable, then a
procedure needs to be put in place whereby Race
Control accepts reports from participating senior
trackside officials, and takes immediate action
against the driver/s involved. In case where there
is any doubt, there is still room for enquiries and
hearings, but where the expert witnesses have
no doubt, then action is necessary on the spot. A
common reaction to this concept is “what of the
driver is innocent and is still penalized?”
My answer is that currently we are seeing far too
many drivers penalized by being pushed off the
track, by having their cars damaged extensively,
by having their races messed up by over-aggressive
driving outside our own rules, and the risk of the
odd driver being penalized unfairly is a much more
remote chance than getting caught up in someone
else’s incident because they were allowed to get
away with aggressive behaviour too often.
Correspondence on the subject will be welcome.
Best regards,
Peter Nelson
A Quick Funny From Mark Sully
A Florida senior citizen drove his brand new
corvette convertible out of the dealership.
Taking off down the road, he floored it to 80
mph, enjoying the wind blowing through what
little hair he had left. “Amazing!” he thought
as he flew down HWY-75, pushing the pedal to
the metal even more!
Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw the
highway patrol behind him, blue lights flashing
and “I can get away from him, no problem!”
thought the elderly gent as he floored it to
100 mph, then 110, then 120.
Suddenly, he thought, “what am I doing? I’ m
too old for this nonsense!”, pulled over to the
side and waited for the Trooper to catch up.
Pulling in behind him, the Trooper walked up
to the drivers side of the Corvette, looked at
his watch and said, “Sir, my shift ends in 30
minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me one
good reason why you were speeding that I’ve
never heard before, I’ll let you go”.
The man, looking very seriously at the Trooper,
said, “Years ago, my wife ran off with a Florida
State Trooper. I thought you were bringing
her back”
“Have a good day, Sir,” said the Trooper.
A Load of Bull
access to motor sport
I am sitting here looking out the window at yet
another sunny Autumn Sunday, our second in a row
and begging the question after last Saturday and
Sunday being fantastic weather for our opening
round of the 2010 Victorian State Circuit racing
Championship, can next weekend’s Shannons
Nationals receive the same treatment.
Socially the news is good with the successful
launch of the Club’s new regalia at the March
Clubnight with a fashion parade being a first
from memory and The Bellenger Goodwood slide
night in April being most informative and relaxed
although it would appear aerial photography is not
one of David’s strong points, according to Jean.
For some reason the May’s Guest Speaker did
not make the Clubnight Promotional page but be
assured we have an excellent guest booked in
Darren Hossack who has raced everything from
Billy Karts to Superkarts and won championships,
from Formula Fords to Supercars, from Speedway
Speedcars to Speedway Sedans and is most
familiar to you all as a Sports Sedan National
Series Winner, in the John Gourlay Saab Chev
and now the fantastic Audi Chev.
If that is not enough entertainment then a
bigger dose is to come in June with John “Fatty”
Mann being our guest to continue our Heritage
Series of Speakers with his almost 50 years in
motor racing in more cars than you would like
to remember and most of them winners, many
at the Island.
Last weekends event was a fantastic start to
the 2010 Championship with 233 entries and
turned into a great weekend’s racing with good
entries in all categories with only two categories,
Sports Cars and Historic Touring Cars having
less than 24 cars, which speaks volumes for
the health of state level racing after our 249
entries for Island Magic only 5 months back. At
Island Magic, we had timing failures, indifferent
weather but generally a good crowd. This last
weekend we had no timing failures fantastic
weather a reasonable crowd, good racing a few
officials missing at the top end but very few
problems. Well done all.
With a few seniors missing a couple of people
stepped into the breach and acquitted themselves
well, with Roger Sinclair and Savas Toumanidis
stepping up to fill the Starter and Assistant
Starter roles quite competently and Dave
Balcombe picking up Sav’s normal role of rounding
up podium finishers whilst still being the one and
only Boundary Rider. Well done to those guys as
this sort of can do attitude makes our meetings
a success and good fun to boot.
I must also mention the pretty much solo stints
Peter and Dawn did at the gate in the absence of
Mrs Whitey who was basking in the Queensland
sun and with Marcia taking it a bit easier after
some recent surgery. Not that you can hold a
good woman down as Marcia was still churning
out the certificates for race winners. Timing
also was operating with smaller numbers but
was assisted by Jenny Pillekers who “quietly”
plodded away as the sole spotter. So quietly in
fact that John & Stephen went home without her.
Speaking of club members showing dedication
and great resolve, Graham Slater who recently
had his gall bladder removed only to discover
some cancerous spots on his liver decided the
only way to fight this insidious disease of cancer
was to have a race before undertaking more
treatment. Graham you may have been at the
back of the field for a change but the smile was
on the dial and that typifies your attitude to
life. Fight the good fight, our best wishes and
support are with you.
Of the 233 entries last weekend just under
10% were PIARC members and they all acquitted
themselves well regardless of where they may
have finished.
piarc notes
A Load of Bull Cont.
Our largest field was Improved Production
with 39 entries of which 5 were members,
headed by Gary McKay who had slaved away
all summer following his big Island Magic
shunt to once again present a pristine
and blindingly fast Torana XU1 which gave
him a 3 rd , 8 th and a fighting 6 th . Phil Dunkin
kept the Holden flag flying with one of his
understandably to infrequent appearances
bringing a 5 th and two podiums of 2 nd and 3 rd.
Wayne Always was a very consistent racer
with 4 th , 3 rd and 5 th , whilst the Kirkhams,
Phil and Declan scored DNF, 12 th & 12 th and
DNF, 19 th & 11 th respectively, a good result
for both after both cars being in disarray
after Race.1.
Ivan Klasan was our sole 944 racer who
suffered ECU failure in Race 1 and got hit
by the whole world in a race ending (for all)
accident that followed. Never say die Ivan
and his crew worked well into the night
using boxes of race tape and low and behold
managed to finish the 10lapper in 7 th .
Talking in Sports Car mode only Ted Huglin
back in the Ferrari 360GT (whilst awaiting
delivery of his new Lamborghini Gallardo)
and Mort Fitzgerald were our only reps, with
Ted finishing 6 th , 5 th and 4 th , whilst Mort had
a perfect score of 2 DNFs and 1 DNS to add
to his MG results of 1 st (albeit 5 seconds off
his lap record) and an uncharacteristic pair
of DNFs.
Our sole HQ and Formula Vee competitors
Adam Bywater and Anthony D’Anna added to
their records with 8 th , 18 th & 9 th for Adam
and 8 th , 4 th & DNF for Anthony.
In Historic Touring Cars 20% of the smallish
18 car field was PIARC, with Stephen Pillekers
scoring creditable 6 th , 6 th & 5 th whilst Mark
Brewster turned around a recent bout of
mechanical failures to score 10th, 9 th and
6 th indicating he is back and looking for
improvement. Mustang man David Moran was
performing well to stay out of trouble and
score a 10 th & 11 th before an unfortunate
DNF Whilst the aforementioned Graham
Slater kept whipping the # 47 Torana XU1 to
two 13ths and a fighting 7 th in the 10 lapper.
Neil Bryson had a hat trick of 3rds in his
Calibra Chev to be a model of consistency
and comeback man Chris Muscat in the Silver
Bullet RX7 had his hat trick of 1sts spoilt by a
flat tyre in Race 1. The other two races were
dominant wins after last years huge shunt at
Sandown ruined the year for the men from
Centreline.
The Formula Ford / Formula Ford 1600 setup
from last year has been revamped for this year
with the Formula Fords starting from the
front as a group and the state Championship
Formula Ford 1600 category Starting as the
second group, two rows behind. That has
proven a popular move as all the CAMS Rising
Stars were present to get beaten by young
PIARC Star Jesse Fenech in all except the
10 lapper when Matthew Brabham won and
Jesse had an off to finish a creditable 4 th .
Our other Formula Fordster was Brendan
Jones who was consistent in races 1 and 3
with 12 th & 14 th places but suffered a DNF in
race 2. Our 3 Formula Ford 1600 competitors
Ian MacMillan, Wayne Groeger and Jonothan
Miles finished FF1600/ Overall respectively
as follows: - 11/27, 11/25, & 13/27, 13/29,
13/27 & 15/29, with Jonothan DNF, DNF &
7/18. Now you really are confused I am sure.
Peter Brock
PIARC got an advance copy of BROCKY from David Hassall recently and we can thoroughly recommend it
to all lovers of our sport and of Peter Brock over the years. Peter was a good friend to the club, and many
of us have followed his racing ever since he started at Phillip Island in the A30 back in the 1960s. This
book follows his career in detail and the longer your history at the tracks is, the more you will enjoy this
picture of one of the generation’s Heroes. That is not to say that the younger fans will not enjoy the story
– it is a fascinating insight into Peter’s career and the people he raced against and David has done it well.
Considering the racing and winning he did at Phillip Island, it is a little disappointing not to have the circuit
mentioned at all, but the story does focus on Peter. In that, it is most satisfying – a reasonably light but
totally enjoyable tracing of the racing. As they say on TV – Order your copy now.
Since The Last Time We Met.....
A lot has happened and here are some of the
highlights.
MEETING AT CAMS (follow-up)
Following the “Protest Meeting” the Board of CAMS
has established a Task Force to investigate the
complaints, under conditions which the Victorian
Executive originally rejected as being to narrow
and needing an impartial chairman. Although the
Chairman remains, the conditions have been
broadened and it will be interesting to see how
serious the Board is about addressing the
problems. In the meantime, the CEO Graham
Fountain, has resigned and will take on the CEO role
at the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in April 2010 so
it will be interesting to see where this all take us.
PIARC SPRINT – Feb 13/14 Phillip Island.
The first sprints of the year got off well with
a busy weekend at the circuit. On Saturday we
had Superkart racing, a CAMS driver observation
session, and the usual track familiarization runs.
Sunday was the traditional Supersprints, using four
cars at a time.
SUPERBIKE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Phillip Island Feb. 26-28.
Another peak event for the circuit and one that
everyone should go to once in their lives to see
the track at its best. Event the weather was kind
apart from an incredible thunder storm and rain
on one of the nights – would have been rough in a
tent at the track. Over 60000 people turned up
over the three days and I have no doubt they all
went home happy.
AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX
at Albert Park – March 2010
Strongly supported by PIARC Senior Officials,
this event went off again as a spectacular start to
the motor racing year for most of us. Many of the
support events were marred by incidents which
required red flags, despite all the good effort by
Henk as Clerk of the Course and James Taylor running
the recovery radio. With the program as it is
at the AGP, if more than about ten minutes is lost
under red flag for a clean-up, the opportunity is
lost and the event cancelled. It is a terrible shame
for those who did not get involved in the incident
and the various categories are going to have to look
very seriously at their performances. However, it
was great practice for Jason Mackay who took over
as Chief of Recovery from Kage this year – quite an
introduction, and his team won the Stewards Cup
for their efforts with the cranes. The Grand Prix
itself was a great race, starting off as it did in the
rain, then running through for the full distance in
relatively good weather. Some of the management
of the event was not up to scratch and I am sure
that a lot of work will be put into this area between
now and next year.
Other events that have been held but without
notes being submitted (yet) includes the Historic
Race Meeting at Phillip Island on the week before
the AGP, and the 2010 Clipsal in Adelaide on the
weekend before that. Also of importance was the
Human Powered 24 hour marathon that Ewan Cole
presents each year in Wonthaggi – an event that now
has quite a few of our senior officials being involved.
Surely someone can put pen to paper (or finger to
the keyboard) and drop us a line about these event
that involve e many of our people.
Five Minute Jobs?
We’ve all of two-minute noodles that take over
five minutes to cook.
This five-minute job took well over that,
I got a phone call from a bus/coach company; I’ve
never done work for this company before and after
this job I really don’t want to do another job
for them. This guy stated it’s only a “five minute
job” all you I want you to do is wire up the rear
mount TV, we’ve wired it every way possible and
it doesn’t work.
When I got there sure enough the TV didn’t work
it was dead, no power to it. I’d managed to trace
one of the main earths (neg power) all the way
to the front of the coach; this involved removing
most of the inside overhead panels and ventilation
system. This was at the 16-hour point. The look
on the owner’s face was unexplainable, after he
saw the inside of his coach in bits but I had to
fix the problem.
I eventually found the problem in the 23 hour
point at the front of the coach, it turn out to be
a rusty earth bolt, which also prevented other
electrical items from not working properly. Not
only was the TV now working so was other electrics
in the coach. Including the fuel gauge that now
read properly
36 hrs later with the coach back together, I almost
had a happy customer (the invoice was negotiated
and paid). As for the old TV it worked on the bench
and in the coach. So much for a FIVE Minute Job
Remember "Back When??"
PIARC, SOME 30 YEARS AGO
(checking out from September 1977)
- #99 in the series
Big news of the month was that the 1978 Australian
Grand Prix had been allocated to PIARC at the
Phillip Island Circuit, and the plans were to run
this event at a date to be settled, and also to run
the 50 th Jubilee Australian Grand Prix celebrations
in March 1978, in conjunction with the Vintage
Sports Car Club who already had an enthusiastic
sponsor in Lance Dixon from Doncaster. The
Jubilee event was to comprise a run around the
original road course by historic race cars, led by
cars that actually raced on those roads in 1927 or
in the subsequent years before the event left the
Island. The Sunday was to be a full-blown historic
race meeting on the current track. As the club
magazine said in September 1977,
“1978 will be a very good year”.
As an aside from our plans, the Australian F5000
competitors had formed together into the “Australian
Formula One Group” chaired by Jon Davison.
Their plans were to have their cars known as
Australian F1, to organize better prize money for
the entrants, to have qualifying sessions for their
gridding (with a cut off point of 110% of the best
times, to have ll races over 120km and these race
would then count towards the ANF1 Championship,
and to have these races all be recognized as the
highest status in the country and not as support
events for other categories. PIARC was then and
would still be strongly behind such aims in general.
Muldy presented a great article on the current
status of motor racing in the state, with a blow
by blow account of who was buying what and doing
what to which. (Ed - Pity he is not still around – we
could do with more of that stuff.)
The PIARC Motorkhana set for a new venue at
the back of Springvale suffered from a few days
of rain and was washed out – to a point where the
only two cars that actually got through the gate
then got bogged and had to be hauled out by the
amused club members. Left with nothing to do for
the day, the members took their now dirty cars
across to the Berwick Airfield where the Light Car
Club of Australia was having their Motorkhana and
joined in with them. They felt a bit our of place
with their scruffy cars and their BBQ sausages
at a LCCA function, but they survived and even
admitted that some of the LCCA crew were actually
quite fast in the dirt.
“A Load of Bull” back in 1977 was not that much
different – with news of people and happenings
within the club. Amongst the committee at that
time were -
Geoff Bull – Club Captain/Treasurer
Alan Campbell – Comp. Secretary
Warren Reid – Planning Officer
Brian Ovenden – Social Secretary.
"Bits N Pieces"
from December 2009
access to motor sport
This week’s challenge is to identify this bit of roadway on Phillip Island.
Phillip Island as a community is firing off in all
directions, particularly noticeable with the number
of housing developments being established
currently. Admittedly they are all becoming a bit
suburban but they are attracting a new range of
interesting houses, great landscaping, and most
have public walkways and water features. Have
a look around sometime and join the many of us
who have properties there. To follow this line of
thought, have a look at the ad for the Eco Resort
in this magazine – we are not saying it is a good
or bad investment, but it is certainly well worth
looking at. We have quite a deal to do with the
Eco and with Dominic, the manager there. They
give discounts to PIARC members and officials
and competitors at most of out race meetings,
we use the facilities for evening drinks or document
checks at times. The whole development is
well worth having a look at, and as the trees grow
and soften the appearance of the buildings, it will
take on a whole new image.
Also on the books is the Cowes-Stony Point Ferry
with the Jetty Triangle still being considered for
the Phillip Island end of the trip. Right now they
are in the middle of protests about this, with the
Island Residents up in arms because the proposal
has a ferry terminal based on a new pier, about
10 metres away from the old pier, and with the
triangle carpark being dedicated to the ferry.
I think a car ferry would be an asset to the area
and I agree that it needs to be close to Cowes,
but not so that it ruins the current pier area at
all. Erewhon Point has also been suggested and
this is about 500 metres to the East of the old
pier, with vehicle access away from Thompson
Ave shops. At this time, I think I agree with
this concept.
The Isle of Wight Hotel is currently going back
to VCAT after the Bass Shire Council failed to
approve some amendments to the plans which
were originally approved back in 2005. Seems like
we will have to wait a bit longer for a improved
watering hole in Cowes. Been waiting a long time
already – like about forty years.
Woolworths are also working on a development in
Cowes, on the old Boomerang Caravan Park site.
Current argument is how to get the traffic off
Thompson Ave and traffic lights are one option
being considered. I think the whole traffic flow
into and through Cowes has to be reconsidered
before this happens – on weekends in summer,
the traffic into Cowes is at walking pace and
traffic lights in the middle of that will not help
the situation. Neither will a ferry station at the
jetty end of Thompson Ave unless other radical
changes are made as well. The traffic is not the
faintest problem in all the streets around the
main street and these have to be used to reduce
the main street bank-up.
Champions lining up to race V8s
As reported in the Age, April 22, 2010
SEVERAL high-profile international drivers, including former formula one world champion Jacques
Villeneuve, are expected to appear as guest drivers in the year’s Gold Coast V8 Supercars event.
Villeneuve, the 1997 world champion, and Australasian Indy-Car stars Will Power, Ryan Briscoe and
Scott Dixon are understood to be among those to be announced at today’s launch of the October
22-24 event.
Villeneuve, 39, who hasn’t had a full-time drive since leaving NASCAR last year, is expected to be
one of 18 drivers to share a drive with regular V* Supercar drivers.
Brett Murray, a member of the events management committee, said a world class field had been
assembled, “We have a mixture of former formula one drivers, Indy 500 championships, IndyCar
and Champ car champions, world touring car and British touring car champions,” he said.
The meeting will be classified as the V8 Supercars’ third endurance race of the season after the
Phillip Island 500 and Bathurst 1000. AAP
