Cyber Bullying Sessions
Thank you to Senior Constable Alan Clapham and Senior
Constable Mark Scambary for presenting 2 sessions to our
school last week on cyber bullying and cyber management.
The first session was with Year 5 and 6 students and I would
like to congratulate our students on their involvement. Our
45 minute session went very quickly with our students
wishing it could have continued. I would also like to thank
the parents who attended the following 45 minute session
followed by a delicious afternoon tea provided by the P & C.
Thank you for attending and the input you had during the
session, we appreciate you giving up your time to come and
discuss some very important issues for both school and
home. Thank you everyone.
Senior Constable Mark Scambary also continued his great
work with our school on Friday when he spoke to our
Kinder students about ‘keeping safe’. It is great to have this
involvement in our school.
P & C Meeting Last Night
Thank you to parents who attended our P & C Meeting last
night. The recent ‘Hat Survey’ was discussed with the
following recommendations made:
• The wide brim school hat will be a compulsory part of
our school uniform in 2014.
• Children already wearing school caps have until the
end of 2014 to change over to the school wide brim
hat ie we will have a transition period.
• New children enrolling at our school will only be sold
the school wide brim hat, all other hats and caps will
be phased out and not be repurchased.
• Coloured caps and hats should not be worn as only our
school hats are a part of our uniform.
This transition period will allow families time to convert to
the new compulsory school wide brim hat.
NAPLAN Testing
Just a reminder that NAPLAN testing for Yr 3 and Yr 5
students is taking place this week. Yesterday we had
Language and Writing, Reading was held today and
Numeracy is on tomorrow. Can I just remind parents that it
is very important that your children are prompt to school.
We also have a catch up day on Friday 17 th May who may
have missed any of these days.
Teacher Professional Learning – Share the Skills
We have a number of staff who are demonstrating lessons
for colleagues in our school and from visiting schools. I
would like to thank teachers: Liz Boyd, Di Monds, Vicki
Bywater, Maria Howard, Suzanne Capps, Chris Beard.
Teachers will also be visiting other schools to observe
lessons and meet with staff about excellent programs and
teaching strategies that we are sharing across the
Macarthur district next week. This is very exciting for our
school in terms of teacher development and a great
leadership opportunity.
Kind Regards,
Lyn Fraser, Principal
This is a very exciting opportunity for our Year 6 students
this year. It is being partly funded by school as we believe
this will be a valuable day for all of our Year 6 students and
look forward to full participation. Back at school we will be
developing this day and integrating the leadership skills with
other school programs.
TERM 2 WEEK 3 ∙ WEDNESDAY 15 MAY 2013
Safe Respectful Learner Awards: Term 2 2013
As per our previous note, changes have begun this term
with a transitional period that lasts for the remainder of
this year. The onus will now be on students to collect their
awards and take responsibility for handing them in to
receive a certificate or pin/badge.
To assist with a smooth transition to the new system:
• Students in Years K-2 will transfer to the new system.
• Students in Years 3-6 will continue to receive a
Trophy of Excellence.
• Year 6 may place a single award in the Magpie Box
(in a clip lock bag).
• In adjusting to the new system, some awards will be
returned unstamped and can be resubmitted.
• The SRL system is cyclical meaning there is no finite
end point whereas the Awards of Excellence were
cumulative. There are now no cumulative points.
All students will transfer to the new system by 2014.
Awards My Child Can Earn:
The Safe Respectful Learner (SRL) Award is replacing the
Merit Award currently received during weekly assemblies.
Leadership Awards are replacing the playground awards.
These are awarded both in the classroom and playground,
targeting cooperative behaviours and independent
leadership. On receiving 4 Leadership Awards, they are
handed in to the class teacher to receive an SRL Award.
Participation Awards are an addition to the current
system recognising a student’s dedication and effort for
participating in extra curricula activities e.g. debating,
band, choir, dance, etc.
SRL Badges are small pins that students can wear
everyday celebrating their achievements as Safe,
Respectful Learners. Students will need 2 big Achievement
Certificates to trade for a badge.
Zone Cross Country Friday 10 th May 2013
A clear blue sky and rather warm temps greeted competitors for the Razorback Zone Cross County on Friday.
Competitors, parents and teachers walked the course and then waited for the marshalling calls.
Most age events had around eighty runners so the starts were a bit hectic, with the junior competitors having to
compress together to make a turn three hundred metres from the start.
All Picton junior runners made it through safely!
Then it was the seniors turn, with their course different, to accommodate the extra kilometre. There was a fall!
Ethan Tutt went down, luckily in the soft sand at the start, however he bravely continued on with skin off his
shoulder.
Picton PS students achieved excellent results, with everyone approaching their events with a determined attitude to
achieve their personal best.
Well done to all for an awesome effort.
Zone Cross Country
On Friday the 10 th of May we (Brooke and Cassie) attended the Zone Cross Country at Camden.
Brooke’s Mum drove us to zone and it took about 45 minutes to get there from Wilton. We finally got there and it
was 8:30am.
We were about the 3 rd people there and we were so nervous but exited.
When the teachers arrived (Mr Boniface and Miss Jourdan) all the runners got their name tags.
We walked the track at about 10:00am and it felt like it took an hour to walk. The grass was so long that nearly
everyone’s shoes were black and dirty.
At about 11:00am it was the under 10’s race, our race. We lined up in what place we came in our school Cross
Country. Brooke 1st, Casey 2nd, Cassie 3rd and Danielle 4 th .
At the starting line the starter said ON YOUR MARKS and then blew his whistle. We were off! About 100 meters up
the track there was a small gate but everyone managed to get through safely.
It felt much longer than the school one probably because of the heat and it was one big lap not two small laps.
At the end of the race Cassie came 11 th , Brooke came 14 th , Casey came 15 th and Danielle came 41 st .
We all finished strongly and we got a bottle of water at the end. Only the top 8 go to regional, but we are going to
try and get in next year. The seniors raced at about 12:15. A lot of our seniors got through to the next level like
Sophie Smith 7th, Olivia Foster 2nd, Sam Griffiths 1 st and Alex Honan 3 rd . James Jones in our class came 6th and
Dylan Parrot in year 5 came 9 th and is the 1 st reserve for 11 boys.
At the end of the day all of our Picton runners were exhausted. They were all fantastic and they got to have a
sausage roll and a snack.
By Brooke Gechevski & Cassie Stein 4J
Alex Honan – 11yrs, 3 rd Place
Dylan Parrott – 11 yrs, 9 th Place
Congratulations to all of our wonderful participants and their fine results. Well done girls and boys! Ms Fraser

EXCITING BBQ NEWS
Last night, the P & C voted unanimously to purchase
a new commercial grade BBQ to use for our
fundraising events. Sadly, our 10 year old BBQ is
only running on three gas burners and has lost most
of its handles and a leg! Our purchase will be made
in the next fortnight and hopefully supplied in time
for our Tasty Tempter Day.
