The student research was completed as part of a graduate occupational safety course<br />

taught by associate professor Michael Behm. Behm said he chose to broadcast the<br />

program to fellow universities because the students' recommendations were so important.<br />

“If content from a unique, well-researched class project stays within our classroom at<br />

ECU, then we lose an opportunity to help others,” he said.<br />

“Football personnel know about the Notre Dame incident but may not be sure how to<br />

prevent it from happening in the future through specific safe work practices,” Behm said.<br />

Centennial Award winners recognized<br />

ECU marked its 104th year by celebrating teaching, research and service during its<br />

annual Founders Day and <strong>University</strong> Awards Celebration held April 26 in Hendrix<br />

Theatre.<br />

Among the awards presented were the Centennial Awards for Excellence recognizing<br />

four areas: service, leadership, ambition and spirit. These awards replace previous<br />

university honors — Founders Day, Chancellor, and Synergy awards.<br />

This year, 49 nominations were received for the 12 Centennial Awards for Excellence,<br />

which are given with up to three recipients per category, representing staff, faculty and<br />

others. Marianna Walker, chair of the faculty, and Phil Hulsey, chair of the Staff Senate,<br />

announced the winners.<br />

Service: Linda Mooney, Department of Sociology and faculty advisor for ECU Friends,<br />

faculty; Johnnie Turner, Health Sciences Campus Grounds supervisor, staff; Clayton<br />

Sessoms, director of Division of Continuing Studies and Summer School, other.<br />

Leadership: Todd Fraley, coordinator of undergraduate studies in the School of<br />

Communication, College of Fine Arts and Communications, faculty; Jan Foust,<br />

accountant with ECU Dowdy Student Stores, staff; Deborah Moody, assistant director of<br />

the Lucille Gorham Intergenerational Community Center, other.<br />

Ambition: Dr. David Collier, director of the Pediatric Healthy Weight Research and<br />

Treatment Center, Brody School of Medicine, faculty; Dr. Gregory Chadwick, associate<br />

dean for the School of Dental Medicine, other.<br />

Spirit: Carl Billingsley, School of Art and Design, College of Fine Arts and<br />

Communication, faculty; Dee Bowling, director of Student Financial Services, staff; and<br />

members of the ECU Pirate Summer Read Committee, other. Members of that committee<br />

are Michael Brown, Mary Beth Corbin, Tom Douglass, Karen Kus, Dionna Manning,<br />

Lauren Piner, Wendy Sharer, Karen Slough Smith, Jan Tovey (posthumous), Karen<br />

Warren, and Carol Woodruff.<br />

Geography professor honored for work<br />

ECU geography professor Derek H. Alderman was honored April 16 with the 2011<br />

Meredith F. Burrill Award, presented by the Association of American Geographers at the<br />

organization's annual meeting in Seattle, Wash.<br />

The national award recognizes exceptional work that integrates research and practical<br />

application while connecting with the community.
