Sports4Kids is bringing play back. 10 WINNING THE GAME Sports4Kids started with two schools in 1996. Ten years later, during the 2005-06 school year, Sports4Kids served 81 schools in the greater San Francisco Bay Area and Baltimore, Maryland. The success of the Sports4Kids program is due in part to an ongoing and thoughtful refinement of the teaching model over the last decade. The unique hands-on program has grown in both scope and scale to include five standard program components delivered during and after school. These components are facilitated by a Site Coordinator who works full days, Monday through Friday. RECESS During recess each Site Coordinator organizes the physical space of the playground to accommodate a safe and appropriate number of games. They teach rules to dozens of games over the course of the year and facilitate conflict resolution to encourage children to play on their own. CLASS GAME TIME Teachers and their students spend an hour with their Site Coordinator on a weekly or bi-weekly basis working through a carefullycrafted curriculum. The components of the curriculum include games, basic skill-building activities, and opportunities for cooperative play. JUNIOR COACH PROGRAM The Junior Coach program encourages older children to develop leadership skills by coaching other children. They receive specialized training on resolving conflicts and initiating games from their Site Coordinator. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM Four days a week, Sports4Kids offers a structured program in the after school hours that includes homework support, healthy snacks, and organized games. INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUES Girls and boys form teams to play sports like basketball, volleyball, and flag football in healthy competition with children from other schools. Parents and school staff attend games that emphasize having fun and building skills. 87% of principals at first year Sports4Kids schools report that the number of fights on the playground decreased from the prior year.
Sports4Kids 2006 sources and uses of funds THE GOAL OF THE GAMES Sports4Kids relies on a diversified funding model for sustainability. Schools pay 43% of the cost of the program which ensures a stable base of funding for growth. The other 57% is a mix of private foundation, government, corporate and individual support.
