A day out at Borrowdale Country Club

LAST weekend, Borrowdale Country
Club, high in the rolling hills of
what is almost certainly Harare’s
most sought after and expensive leafy
northern suburb, hosted a fund-raiser
which attracted support from across the
city…and really from the four corners of
the country thanks to a two-day Polocrosse
event.
Polocrosse is an action-packed, adrenaline-pumping
hybrid sport, based partly on
the far more costly horseback game of polo:
often described as the world’s most expensive
sport and lacrosse, a game invented by
Native Americans.
Saturday was a brilliant, cloud free
warm late autumn, early winter day with
not a cloud in the azure sky and barely a
breath of wind. Sunday was not so bright;
in fact it was grim, grey and unpleasantly
cold.
Borrowdale Country Club has very recently
repainted and the roads around it
smartly repaired and re-surfaced as the
club was used as an overflow car-park for
thousands of guests attending President
Mugabe’s daughter’s wedding. I couldn’t
make my mind up if it were nice to see
what happens to my taxpayer’s dollars or
whether I should be cross because of the utterly
deplorable state of most of our roads!
In addition to the thundering echo of
gleaming, glistening thoroughbred horses’
hooves and the dust as they charged, cantered
or trotted across the polo field, there
were polite comments and applause from
scores of tennis players and spectators and
the click of woods on the manicured bowling-green.
Many youngsters swam in a shaded pool
(certainly on the first day) and enjoyed a
jumping castle, face-painting and possibly
their first unforgettable taste of violently
violet-coloured candy floss.
Enthusiasts spent all day getting the aromatic
contents of their bubbling cast iron
pots just right for the late afternoon judging
of a potjie competition. These are growing
in popularity throughout southern Africa
and I’ve been invited to help judge one
soon at Old Miltonians’ Club in Bulawayo.
Of course you can’t sample a potjie’s
goodness until it’s actually been judged (Pieter
Lombard, chairman of Harare Sports
Club was chief judge), so hungry members
and visitors during the day enjoyed burgers
and bacon-and-egg rolls cooked by club
staff or steak rolls, burgers and hot dogs
from a braai at the Polocrosse section.
A magnificent and enormous porker pig
was slowly spit-roasted to mouth-watering
excellence by young master butcher, “AJ”
Raybouldt, who also worked on a steamed
whole lamb, great chunks of wonderful
meat were served in floury hamburger
rolls.
There was music and dancing across the
club’s rolling acres, including a professional
disco by Jumping Jill; an on-going indoor
pool competition and, according to the posters,
a display of vintage cars. (Maybe that
was on the Sunday?)
At night, the sky was lit up for kilometres
by a massive bonfire, but due to the
presence of the skittish, highly strung, Polocrosse
ponies, no fireworks.
I was very glad we went on the sunny
Saturday and kept warm in more workaday
Ha-ha-ha-rare (Africa;s fun capital) on the
depressingly miserable Sunday!

Secret Street Crew (Premiere): Ashley Banjo takes on the challenge
of teaching five unfit and uncoordinated beer drinking darts players
from Stockport into a genuine street dance crew. Over a three week
period these darts players meet up for secret rehearsals so that they
can surprise their family, friends and other darts players at a big
darts tournament, with a specially choreographed routine taught by
Ashley. From 25 May at 18:00 CAT.
Chicago PD (Premiere): In the series premiere, after a slew of
brutal slayings, District 21, led by Sergeant Hank Voight goes after
a Columbian drug cartel cleaning house in Chicago. They discover
D’Anthony who proves to be an asset in the investigation. At District,
complicated histories and unit rivalries surface which could end up
costing them one of their own. Meanwhile, Rookie Kyle Ruzek is
pulled from the police academy by Olinsky to join the team. It airs
from Tuesday 27 May at 19:30 CAT.
