TEACHING FORMAT & KEY DATES Lectures: There will be 13, two-hour lectures starting in Teaching Week 1. Timetable details are available on mySI-net (https://www.sinet.uq.edu.au). Tutorials: There will be 12, one-hour tutorials. Students can sign up for tutorial sessions on mySI-net (https://www.sinet.uq.edu.au) AFTER THE FIRST LECTURE. Key Dates: Students are advised to consult the Course Co-ordinator if they encounter difficulties in submitting assessment by the due dates: • Lectures begin in Teaching Week 1 (week commencing 27 February). • Tutorials begin in Teaching Week 2 (week commencing 6 March). • The deadline for adding or changing semester 1 courses is 10 March. • The deadline for dropping a semester 1 course without financial penalty is 31 March. • Mid-semester break is 17 April – 22 April. • The deadline for dropping a semester 1 course without academic penalty is 30 April. • The TUTORIAL PAPER (see ‘Assessment’ below) is due at your tutorial in week 6 (week beginning Monday 3 April). • The ESSAY (see ‘Assessment’ below) is due by 3pm on Friday 12 May. • End of semester revision period is 5-9 June, 2006. • An EXAMINATION will be scheduled by the University for the end of the semester examination period (10-24 June, 2006). You may elect to do a 2nd essay in place of the exam; the 2nd essay is due by 3pm on Friday 9 June. COURSE DESCRIPTION POLS1301 is an introductory study of the main avenues of political thought in the contemporary world and aims to familiarise students with key aspects of liberalism, conservatism, socialism, democracy, fundamentalism, nationalism, totalitarianism, anarchism, feminism, ecologism and multiculturalism. Every society has an ideology that forms the basis of the majority ‘public opinion’ or common sense, a basis that usually remains invisible to most people within the society. In modern western societies, liberalism and democracy are usually the dominant ideologies although nationalism, conservatism, socialism (particularly in its social democratic form), feminism, and ecologism are also important. An understanding of political ideologies will assist our understanding of important current events and of international problems. The course assumes no prior knowledge in political ideologies.
