With <strong>the</strong> number of starters<br />

dimin<strong>is</strong>hing in arithmetic<br />

progression <strong>as</strong> stage followed<br />

stage, London <strong>to</strong> Monte Carlo<br />

looked a very long way. Despite<br />

earnest press reports on heavy<br />

se<strong>as</strong>, conditions for <strong>the</strong> first<br />

few legs were placid by <strong>the</strong><br />

standards <strong>that</strong> both B<strong>is</strong>cay and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Engl<strong>is</strong>h Channel can<br />

produce. But, in a boat <strong>that</strong> can<br />

do 60 <strong>to</strong> 70 knots plus, even a<br />

popple can be shattering, <strong>as</strong><br />

several of <strong>the</strong> 22 ori{rrral<br />

starters soon d<strong>is</strong>covered.<br />

<strong>To</strong> <strong>say</strong> <strong>that</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>race</strong> <strong>is</strong><br />

ambitious <strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong> put it mildly. A<br />

p<strong>as</strong>sage of th<strong>is</strong> length <strong>is</strong> a maior<br />

undertaking for any craft. The<br />

<strong>question</strong> <strong>inevitably</strong> ar<strong>is</strong>es <strong>as</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r such a course <strong>is</strong>n't<br />

mofe suited <strong>to</strong> slower, more<br />

<strong>resilient</strong>, mo<strong>to</strong>r crru<strong>is</strong>ers,<br />

prepared for staying at sea for<br />

longer stages, and equipped <strong>to</strong><br />

take <strong>the</strong> full brunt of <strong>the</strong><br />

Atlantic.<br />

llrhat went on in <strong>the</strong> opening<br />

legs points <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> relative<br />

vulnerability of <strong>the</strong> high speed<br />

d<strong>as</strong>her, however powerful it<br />

may be and however <strong>to</strong>ugh its<br />

crew. By Bilbao, nins entries<br />

had fallen out, leaving 13 <strong>to</strong><br />

continue <strong>to</strong>wards Gib and,<br />

hopefully, <strong>the</strong> Gulf of Lions,<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r region of windy ferocity.<br />

Here in an interim report, Ray<br />

Bulman looks over <strong>the</strong> first four<br />

legs of <strong>the</strong> course, between<br />

London and Bilbao. R"y,<br />

covering <strong>the</strong> event by helicopter,<br />

will deliver a fur<strong>the</strong>r report,<br />

and a <strong>race</strong> round up, in our<br />

FOLLOWING <strong>the</strong> big build-up and pre-<strong>race</strong> publicity surrounding<br />

<strong>the</strong> London/Monte-Carlo marathon<br />

-<br />

and <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>appointingly<br />

small field of 22 starters<br />

-<br />

it <strong>is</strong> now almost<br />

certain <strong>that</strong> what looked like becoming a non-event might<br />

become a <strong>race</strong> of some stature.<br />

Only 13 craft completed <strong>the</strong> fourth stage <strong>to</strong> Bilbao. in<br />

Spain, and two of <strong>the</strong>se were so-called second cl<strong>as</strong>s entries<br />

because <strong>the</strong>ir drivers had trailed <strong>the</strong>ir boats by road after<br />

mechanical trouble on previous stages.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> 22 entries were sent on <strong>the</strong>ir way in Barking<br />

Reach by HRH Princess Margaret on Saturday, June 1O'<br />

not only did several thousand Londoners turn out <strong>to</strong> wave<br />

participants all <strong>the</strong> way <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> start line, but countless runabout<br />

owners made it an excuse <strong>to</strong> shoot up and down <strong>the</strong><br />

river in escort.<br />

What may have seemed an impressive sight in <strong>the</strong> comparative<br />

safety of <strong>the</strong> river, w<strong>as</strong> soon sorted out when <strong>the</strong><br />

leaders reached <strong>the</strong> open sea. Five dropped out on <strong>that</strong> first<br />

stage alone, some through carelessness.<br />

Without <strong>question</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>as</strong>test craft must have been Tim<br />

Powell's 32ft. Canadian Moppie' But although he led <strong>the</strong><br />

field along <strong>the</strong> south co<strong>as</strong>t, th<strong>is</strong> veteran driver ran aground<br />

off Selsey Bill and almost swept <strong>the</strong> bot<strong>to</strong>m of h<strong>is</strong> craft<br />

clean of shafts, propellers, and rudder. Therefore, within<br />

<strong>the</strong> first 2OO miles one of <strong>the</strong> hot favourites w<strong>as</strong> forced <strong>to</strong><br />

1st stage: London<br />

- Cowes<br />

Just after 1Oam. Princess Margaret dropped <strong>the</strong> flag on<br />

what w<strong>as</strong> <strong>to</strong> be <strong>the</strong> start of <strong>the</strong> longest ever offshore powerboat<br />

<strong>race</strong>. At 2700 miles, it surp<strong>as</strong>sed <strong>the</strong> 1969 Round-<br />

Britain by over 1000 miles.<br />

The early lead w<strong>as</strong> taken byTim Powell's Bertram followed<br />

13 minutes later by Richard Lawson's quadruple Mercury<br />

outboard powered Jaffa Orange Juice. Designed by Ray<br />

Hunt and built by Souter of Cowes, th<strong>is</strong> boat had been built<br />

especially for th<strong>is</strong> event, <strong>as</strong> w<strong>as</strong> P<strong>as</strong>coe Watson'sAvenger<br />

Perhaps <strong>the</strong> most d<strong>is</strong>appointed competi<strong>to</strong>rs were Timo<br />

Makinen and P<strong>as</strong>coe Watson, whose Dutch built Ford<br />

Cammenga w<strong>as</strong> late in delivery, forcing P<strong>as</strong>coe <strong>to</strong> purch<strong>as</strong>e<br />

Ronnie Hoare's Shead-designed aluminium Unohoo at<strong>the</strong><br />

l<strong>as</strong>t minute. Unfortunately, l<strong>as</strong>t minute preparations of th<strong>is</strong><br />

craft slowed her on th<strong>is</strong> leg.<br />

Re-engined with Ford diesels. Ralph Hil<strong>to</strong>n's HfS -<br />

th<strong>is</strong> stage and on <strong>the</strong> forced retirement of Canadian Moppie,<br />

THE London <strong>to</strong> Monte-Carlo, <strong>the</strong> powerboating<br />

foolhardy, impossible ambition when it w<strong>as</strong><br />

The 1969 Don Shead designed, Souter<br />

Trophy <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r with f5OOO, plus enough<br />

additional silverware <strong>to</strong> fill a small van. She<br />

had been superbly driven rn a clear-headed<br />

manner by her three-man crew Mike Bellamy,<br />

Eddie Chater and Jim Brooker. Her <strong>to</strong>tal elaosed<br />

time for <strong>the</strong> course of 71hr. 35min.<br />

56sec. w<strong>as</strong> almost nine hours ahead of <strong>the</strong><br />

second craft home. Th<strong>is</strong> huge lead, which she<br />

gained some time earlier, w<strong>as</strong> sensibly maintained<br />

and never once were <strong>the</strong>y tempted <strong>to</strong><br />

improve it at possible cost of mechanical<br />

forged ahead.<br />

Second overall olace w<strong>as</strong> an absolutely<br />

fant<strong>as</strong>tic achievement for <strong>the</strong> ltalian<br />

speedboat firm of Riva, and, among many<br />

things, did much <strong>to</strong> prove <strong>that</strong> <strong>the</strong> reliability of<br />

an old, well-tried design, hull material, type of<br />

engine and simple transm<strong>is</strong>sion can still pay<br />

dividends.<br />

It w<strong>as</strong> taken by <strong>the</strong> four-year-old Riva<br />

runabout Zoom driven by Gianfranco Rossi,<br />

Rena<strong>to</strong> Mazzolini and Et<strong>to</strong>re Andenna entered<br />

under Monaco colours. She had ploughed her<br />

way south through sea conditions for which<br />

she w<strong>as</strong> never intended, Her tvvo large<br />

350 hp Riva petrol engines b<strong>as</strong>ed on GM<br />

blocks were run well below peak performance<br />

and, coupled with conventional shaft transm<strong>is</strong>sion,<br />

give her <strong>the</strong> reliability lacked by<br />

many of her rivals.<br />

More than one pundit shrugged her off <strong>as</strong> a<br />

joke when she arrived for scrutineering at<br />

Putney prior <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>race</strong>, while o<strong>the</strong>rs gave her<br />

little chance of getting beyond Dover, but she<br />

slipped in<strong>to</strong> second place after La Rochelle<br />

and stayed <strong>the</strong>re in an almost unchallengeable<br />

position until <strong>the</strong> end.<br />

The only real r<strong>is</strong>k <strong>to</strong> Zoom came in <strong>the</strong> first<br />

leg <strong>to</strong> Cowes where her crew suffered badly<br />

from cold, not real<strong>is</strong>ing how big <strong>the</strong><br />

temperature difference w<strong>as</strong> between <strong>the</strong><br />

Mediterranean and Brit<strong>is</strong>h waters; but <strong>the</strong>y<br />

soon overcame th<strong>is</strong> by purch<strong>as</strong>ing wet suits<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y proudly wore all <strong>the</strong> way <strong>to</strong><br />

Speedm<strong>as</strong>ter outdrive legs. Caution on <strong>the</strong><br />

part of her driver did much <strong>to</strong>ward getting her<br />

trouble. She w<strong>as</strong> seldom driven flat out and<br />

w<strong>as</strong> held back even more after her driver<br />

cracked three ribs at La Coruna when Mrss<br />

WD4O slipped from <strong>the</strong> slings of a crane with<br />

Oskar aboard. But for th<strong>is</strong> accident <strong>the</strong> first<br />

One must not overlook <strong>the</strong> performances of<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r unoenalized fin<strong>is</strong>hers: Alan<br />

Palengat's Double Century<br />

-<br />

all Ford diesel<br />

oowered.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> w<strong>as</strong> David Palengat's first real<br />

powerboat <strong>race</strong>. Normally he <strong>is</strong> a keen ocean<br />

racing enthusi<strong>as</strong>t and certainly looked more<br />

fitting <strong>to</strong> <strong>that</strong> sport when he turned up at <strong>the</strong><br />

early morning briefings. David, dressed<br />

impeccably in reefer jacket and yachting cap<br />

more fitting <strong>to</strong> a Cowes yacht club than <strong>the</strong><br />

wet suited drtvers around him, added a<br />

certain dignity <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> occ<strong>as</strong>ion, and had he not<br />

carried gallons of sherry aboard, which he<br />

dealt out in large quantities <strong>to</strong> h<strong>is</strong> fellow<br />

competi<strong>to</strong>rs at each s<strong>to</strong>pping place, h<strong>is</strong> time<br />

of 102hr. 38min. 49sec. may well have been<br />

improved upon. He and h<strong>is</strong> crew were not<br />

only first cl<strong>as</strong>s competi<strong>to</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong>y set a fine<br />

example <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> field at scrutineering etc. and<br />

obeved <strong>the</strong> rule-book <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> letter.<br />

The greatest loss in <strong>the</strong> <strong>race</strong> w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> sinking<br />

of Double Century's closest competi<strong>to</strong>r<br />

Spirit of Michaelhouse. She suddenly<br />

- sprang a leak on route for Alicante and her<br />

five man crew which included Brit<strong>is</strong>h<br />

powerboating veterans - Peter Hicks and Ron<br />

Watts were picked up by Double Century<br />

running - just ahead ot her. Spirit of Michaelhouse<br />

w<strong>as</strong> a 31ft. Fairey Huntsman cru<strong>is</strong>er<br />

and a s<strong>is</strong>tership <strong>to</strong> Double Century except she<br />

w<strong>as</strong> powered by twin Perkins diesels. She<br />

w<strong>as</strong> running <strong>as</strong> a South African entry and w<strong>as</strong><br />

sponsored by many followers on a mileage<br />

completed b<strong>as</strong><strong>is</strong> <strong>as</strong> in a charity walk<br />

and on reaching - <strong>the</strong> fin<strong>is</strong>h s<strong>to</strong>od <strong>to</strong> collect -<br />

almost fSO,OOO which w<strong>as</strong> <strong>to</strong> be presented<br />

<strong>to</strong> Michaelhouse Boys School in South Africa<br />

<strong>to</strong>ward <strong>the</strong> cost of building a new wing.<br />

The <strong>race</strong> proved a great success for Ford<br />

diesel power but a complete d<strong>is</strong><strong>as</strong>ter for<br />

Mercury outboards. Not one boat using <strong>the</strong>se<br />

engines fin<strong>is</strong>hed without carrying a time<br />

penalty, and those <strong>that</strong> reached Monte-Carlo<br />

onlv arrived because <strong>the</strong>ir crews had often<br />

spent <strong>the</strong> night rebuilding <strong>the</strong> power heads<br />

etc. Nearly all used up <strong>the</strong> host of spare parts<br />

carried in <strong>the</strong>ir land support vehicles, and<br />

seldom were <strong>the</strong>se quadruple-engined rrgs<br />

running with all mo<strong>to</strong>rs functioning.<br />

The event w<strong>as</strong> a mammoth exerc<strong>is</strong>e in<br />

organ<strong>is</strong>ation and involved not only <strong>the</strong><br />

Offshore Powerboat Club led bv John and<br />

Hilary Chitty, but two coach loads of officials<br />

who travelled hundreds of miles. olus <strong>the</strong><br />

crew of <strong>the</strong> sole official rescue boat Titanic<br />

Loo and <strong>the</strong> men aboard <strong>the</strong> individual<br />

support teams <strong>that</strong> most competi<strong>to</strong>rs had on<br />

shore. Perhaps most important of all, without<br />

<strong>the</strong> faith of Barry Bridgland, chairman of Port<br />

Richborough, it would never have got off <strong>the</strong><br />

ground. Not only did h<strong>is</strong> company sponsor <strong>the</strong><br />

event, but at <strong>the</strong> Monte-Carlo prizegiving he<br />

After limping in <strong>to</strong> Opor<strong>to</strong> well down <strong>the</strong> field,<br />

repairs were h<strong>as</strong>tily carried out <strong>to</strong> Jaffa<br />

Orange Juice and by morning she w<strong>as</strong> ready<br />

<strong>to</strong> start for C<strong>as</strong>ca<strong>is</strong>. But within a few miles<br />

she began <strong>to</strong> suffer from a whole series of<br />

mechanical faults -<br />

<strong>as</strong> did Who Dares -<br />

which had crept in<strong>to</strong> Opor<strong>to</strong> over 12 hours<br />

late. Both <strong>the</strong>se craft were forced <strong>to</strong> run for<br />

Figueira da Foz, about 80 miles north of<br />

C<strong>as</strong>ca<strong>is</strong>, where <strong>the</strong>y fell far<strong>the</strong>r and far<strong>the</strong>r<br />

but <strong>the</strong> se<strong>as</strong> were<br />

almost flat calm and <strong>the</strong> sun at l<strong>as</strong>t began <strong>to</strong><br />

make itself felt. Little trouble w<strong>as</strong> experienced<br />

here and <strong>the</strong> section w<strong>as</strong> won by Conserve or<br />

Per<strong>is</strong>h. M<strong>is</strong>s WD-4O arrived 12 minutes later<br />

followed by Zoom with HIS fourth.<br />

Next morning, when drivers arrived for<br />

early morning briefing <strong>the</strong>y found Jaffa<br />

Orange Juice alongside. She had made <strong>the</strong><br />

harbour at 4am but at <strong>the</strong> cost of ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

broken crankshaft. However, Who Dares wilh<br />

V<strong>is</strong>count Slim's <strong>to</strong>ugh SAS crew aboard w<strong>as</strong><br />

meanwhile underway again 'and by nightfall<br />

had completed 400 miles only s<strong>to</strong>pping briefly<br />

for fuel on <strong>the</strong> way. When <strong>the</strong>y saw <strong>the</strong> plight<br />

of Jaffa Orange Juice on arrival at Portimao<br />

<strong>the</strong>y offered her <strong>the</strong>ir l<strong>as</strong>t spare crankshaft<br />

and it w<strong>as</strong> th<strong>is</strong> unself<strong>is</strong>h gesture <strong>that</strong> put<br />

Little happened on th<strong>is</strong> section which <strong>to</strong>ok<br />

only real c<strong>as</strong>ualty w<strong>as</strong> Conserve or Per<strong>is</strong>h<br />

which lost <strong>the</strong> use of one of her engines due<br />

<strong>to</strong> a broken propeller bush<br />

-<br />

probably costing<br />

her <strong>the</strong> chance of winning <strong>the</strong> stage prize.<br />

M<strong>is</strong>s WD-4O again <strong>to</strong>ok <strong>the</strong> honours, th<strong>is</strong><br />

Jaffa Orange Juice <strong>to</strong>ok <strong>the</strong> lead and<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> section w<strong>as</strong> later reported by drivers <strong>to</strong><br />

be one of <strong>the</strong> roughest so far and it w<strong>as</strong><br />

Michaelhouse sank. Conserve or Per<strong>is</strong>h fell<br />

back <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> rough going loosened one of her<br />

mo<strong>to</strong>rs, while Oskar Trost began suffering<br />

again from <strong>the</strong> effects of h<strong>is</strong> strained ribs<br />

although he still managed <strong>to</strong> fin<strong>is</strong>h third.<br />

The only o<strong>the</strong>r problem<br />

when HIS picked up a rope round her<br />

The run <strong>to</strong> Barcelona w<strong>as</strong> flat calm and <strong>the</strong><br />

although she w<strong>as</strong> <strong>to</strong>wed by Titanic <strong>To</strong>o at<br />

Stage 13 and 14: Barcelona<br />

- La Grand Motte -<br />

Monte-Carlo<br />

The leg <strong>to</strong> La Grand Motte across <strong>the</strong> Gulf of<br />

Laons w<strong>as</strong> perhaps <strong>the</strong> roughest of <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

voyage. V<strong>is</strong>count Slim's crew in Who Dares<br />

blew an engine just after <strong>the</strong> start and<br />

returned <strong>to</strong> Barcelona, where <strong>the</strong>y joined<br />

Conserve or Per<strong>is</strong>h among a mountain of<br />

Mercury bits and pieces. Both craft later<br />

started, Conserve or Per<strong>is</strong>h making La Grand<br />

Motte. but Who Dares fin<strong>is</strong>hed her <strong>race</strong> for<br />

good in Puer<strong>to</strong> De Selv<strong>as</strong>, 10 miles inside<br />

Spain.<br />

Several tried <strong>to</strong> make <strong>the</strong> direct crossing of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gulf but all gave up <strong>the</strong> attempt because<br />

of <strong>the</strong> huge se<strong>as</strong>, including HIS which used<br />

<strong>to</strong>o much fuel and w<strong>as</strong> forced <strong>to</strong> enter La<br />

Nouvelle 70 miles <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> west <strong>to</strong> <strong>to</strong>p up her<br />

tanks. Jaffa Orange Juice w<strong>as</strong> again first th<strong>is</strong><br />

time followed bv Zoom and M<strong>is</strong>s WD-4O.<br />

The final section w<strong>as</strong> something of an<br />

anti-climax. The sea w<strong>as</strong> flat calm after <strong>the</strong><br />

first few miles or so and <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r very hot<br />

indeed, but even so, Conserve or Per<strong>is</strong>h still<br />

suffered engine trouble and went in<strong>to</strong> Port<br />

Beu for hurried reoairs.<br />

HIS led <strong>the</strong> section most of <strong>the</strong> way but<br />

Jaffa Orange Jutce rooK over <strong>the</strong> lead just<br />

west of Cannes and held it <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> end, so<br />

winning all <strong>the</strong> Mediterranean legs after<br />

rejoining <strong>the</strong> <strong>race</strong> at Marbella.<br />

HIS <strong>to</strong>ok second place with M<strong>is</strong>s WD-4O<br />
