Taking the Long View
Listening to the past -
Leading for the future
Dear Friends of Presbyterian Homes & Services,
One of the greatest strengths I have found in Presbyterian Homes & Services
(PHS) is its ability to take the long view. While so many organizations are required
to think quarter to quarter and even day to day, PHS is able to focus broadly
on the organization’s mission to enrich the lives of older adults through services
and communities that reflect the love of God. Over the long haul, PHS has
demonstrated its aptitude for operational and financial balance, ensuring that
our residents and clients are well served.
This approach has sustained PHS through the numerous economic ups and downs
of the past 50+ years. In the current economy, such capability is more important
than ever. The board of directors is confident that PHS will continue to navigate
with integrity and stewardship through a turbulent climate and maintain its course
of excellence. Our ministry is clear, our business practices sound, our financial
position solid and our patron base growing. If any senior housing and services
provider is positioned to effectively serve older adults today and tomorrow,
I believe it is PHS.
This edition of Perspectives narrates that long view both behind and before us.
We are starting to provide for a new generation of residents and clients, and to
introduce PHS to the generation that will follow. We are listening, learning and
shaping our communities and services accordingly in a continued commitment
to promote and uphold the freedom and independent choice of older adults.
Taking the long view requires the board of directors to thoughtfully oversee the
organization’s performance while lifting our eyes to the future. We cannot do
this without the commitment of the PHS staff, loyalty of volunteers, generosity
of donors, and confidence of residents and their families.
While the times are uncertain, PHS holds on to the hope and certainty of Jesus
Christ and his faithfulness to us. On behalf of the board, I thank you for your
continued trust and ask for your prayer. We look forward to sharing this ministry
in 2010 and for many years to come.
Sharing God’s love together,
Care Comes Home
Olivia Erickson doesn’t often
ask for help. At age 73, she is
active in her community and
church, drives wherever she
wishes and makes her own
decisions.
Olivia and her husband, Gene, were wise
to move two years ago into a townhome
in Maplewood, Minnesota, designed to
support them as they grow old together.
Their plan is to live in their own home for
as long as confidently and comfortably
possible. That plan was put to the test
when Olivia needed major foot surgery last
Creative Independence gives older adults
the freedom to live well at home.
September. Following her hospital stay,
she was in transitional care at Presbyterian
Homes of Roseville when she learned that
Creative Independence ® , the in-home care
division of Presbyterian Homes & Services
(PHS), could help her get back home and
back on her feet.
As a member of the Presbyterian Homes
& Services family, Creative Independence
emerges from a mission and commitment
to extend high quality care into the homes
of older adults. Creative Independence
offers innovative personalized care plans
designed to deliver just the services
needed by an individual to give them the
freedom to live well at home.
In the past, if an older adult suffered a
serious injury or chronic illness, it signaled
that it was time to move in with family
or go to into a long-term care facility.
Presbyterian Home Care was formed in
1980 to provide care to persons who were
on a PHS community’s wait list, until such
time as the person could move in.
Today, for many people, that is no longer
the case. Older adults are looking for
support to live independently even as they
begin to need help with everyday tasks.
Creative Independence was organized in
2008 in response to this growing trend. In
2009 its client base grew from 50 to over
400. “It’s a way to introduce PHS and its
approach to providing care to individuals,
perhaps well before they have considered
other living options,” said Beckie Conway,
Creative Independence Executive Director.
People often have assumptions about
how they will be treated by home care
providers. Olivia admits she was anxious
that someone would come into her home
and take over - telling her what she could
and could not do. When Bethany Krueger,
Creative Independence Home Health Aide
arrived, she quickly put Olivia at ease. “I’m
a guest in her home,” said Krueger. “Olivia
was inviting me in and trusting me. My
job was to find out what her goals were
to regain her health.” Krueger reassured
that while she provided the skill, Olivia
controlled her own recovery.
“Bethany was very professional and very
kind,” remarked Olivia. Krueger assisted
her with bathing and dressing, medication
set-up, exercises, checked and re-wrapped
the bandage on her foot, and recorded her
vitals. She also helped with light chores
around the house at Olivia’s request.
Krueger was one of Olivia’s care team
that also included a care manager, nurse,
and physical and occupational therapists
who worked together to deliver her
personalized and coordinated care. Olivia
felt a good rapport with all the members
of the team. “I was very happy with their
service. I had high expectations and they
got results for me.”
Olivia shared small
victories with team
members each time she
reached a goal, such as
moving from walker to
cane, to free-standing.
“On my last visit she
expressed how much she
appreciated my services,”
recalled Krueger. “It was
a really good moment
for me to know that I
provided good service
for her.”
Creative Independence offers home care
services for short-term recovery from an
illness or injury to help older adults, like
Olivia, until they feel stronger and regain
their independence. For those whose
needs are greater, Creative Independence
offers long-term care services aimed at
helping clients learn to manage their
health and maintain their optimal wellbeing
while remaining in their homes.
The highly trained care providers visit
clients who only need a few hours of
home care per month as well as clients
who need care several hours a day, 7
days a week, and any level in between.
“This is where we live up to our name,”
said Conway. “We say to our clients,
‘Let’s be creative to see how we can
support you to stay in your own home
at your highest level of independence.’
That’s what it’s all about.”
Conway sees changes in culture related
to aging and health care. She envisions
Creative Independence eventually
providing massage therapy, alternative
medicines, and spiritual support such
as chaplain visits. “We’re a faith-based
organization that understands wellness as
holistic. I think that’s something unique
that we can offer to clients in the future.”
Across Generations
at Presbyterian Homes of Arden Hills
George Knieriemen’s family has been part of Presbyterian Homes for over 40 years.
p
George and Cheryl
Knieriemen
George Knieriemen’s
parents, Norma
and George, lived at
Presbyterian Homes
of Arden Hills
in the 1970’s.

Long before the Rev. George
Knieriemen, Jr. came to live at
Presbyterian Homes of Arden
Hills, he was an active member
of its community in almost
every way possible.
He has been a pastor to residents, son
of residents, family member of staff,
volunteer, and donor. Now he remains
active in the life of the community as a
resident.
George and his wife, Cheryl, came from New
Jersey to Minnesota in 1968 for George to
serve as pastor of North Como Presbyterian
Church in Roseville, Minnesota. George
became professionally acquainted with
The Presbyterian Home, now Presbyterian
Homes of Arden Hills, through his ministry
to church members who lived there. He
visited regularly and was occasionally
invited to lead chapel services.
George became more personally involved
when his own parents, Norma and George
Knieriemen, Sr., moved from New Jersey
to The Presbyterian Home in 1971 to
be closer to George and Cheryl. Many
changes happened during their residency
including the addition of Newton Wing
and the McKnight Care Center. “Without
moving they lived in three different places
– so to speak” said George. “They lived in
The Presbyterian Home, then Lakeview,
then Johanna Shores. All the while they
were still in Room #62,” He laughed
recalling earlier names that have graced
Presbyterian Homes of Arden Hills. As
their needs increased, they moved to the
McKnight Care Center. George Sr. lived to
be 89 and Norma 90.
Linda Knieriemen, George’s daughter
remembers that when her grandparents
lived at The Presbyterian Home, the
family, who didn’t own a cabin “up north”,
fondly nicknamed it “The Lake”. “So, I
might say that I went up to the Lake
to see Granny and Pop-Pop,” she said.
Now a Presbyterian minister serving a
congregation in Holland, Michigan, Linda
worked with the Arden Hills culinary staff
during her teen years. George’s other
daughter, Marily, with whom he often
travels abroad, is currently serving in Niger,
Africa as Country Director for Helen Keller
International Health.
In the 1980’s, George’s wife Cheryl was
employed for 11 years as Arden Hills’
Volunteer Coordinator. After she had
stood by him for so long in
the role of a pastor’s wife,
George enjoyed being
Cheryl’s “sidekick”. “It
p
George scans the daily news
in preparation to lead the Current
Events discussion group.
made me feel good that she had her own
position and profile.” When he retired, “she
immediately recruited me,” said George.
For 20 years now he has led the Friday
morning Current Events discussion once
a month. Lakeview residents gather for a
stimulating presentation and conversation
about what is happening locally and
globally. “George is an asset to our
community because he is upbeat, funloving
and always shares a smile with staff
members and residents alike,” said Kay
Rehnberg, who is the current Volunteer
Co-coordinator.
“For years we assumed that Arden Hills
would be our future residence,” said
George. However their move into Lakeview
happened very quickly after Cheryl suffered
her first stroke in 2005. “When my parents
made their move in the midst of a crisis for
both of them,” said Linda, “Presbyterian
Homes was their respite.” They knew
many of the staff, some who went back
to the days when George’s parents were
residents. Linda feels that the transition
was eased by having a familiarity with the
location, the building, the staff and the
ethos of the place. “In short,” she said, “the
Knieriemens trust Presbyterian Homes.”
Cheryl’s time as a resident was brief. After
repeated strokes, she moved to McKnight
Care Center while George remained in
Lakeview. Cheryl passed away in 2007.
After so many years and ways of
involvement, George’s experience as
a resident ratifies and strengthens the
relationship built over many years. “I have
been impressed with the philosophy and
commitment of PHS to provide exceptional
care,” he reflected, “and now I have my
own experience as a resident with the way
it’s carried out by the staff. I see it from the
other side.”
“I have been impressed with the philosophy
and commitment of PHS to provide exceptional
care, and now I have my own experience as
a resident.” ~George Knieriemen
He has appreciated the faith-based culture
of PHS. “Christian values are demonstrated
here in the way people are treated,” he
said. George is especially pleased with
the religious and ethnic diversity.
“Often the staff members from Asia
and Africa are Christian, reflecting our
missionary heritage,” he noticed, “But
we also have staff members who
practice other faiths. I hope that they
feel as welcome and comfortable as I
know they are competent.”
“Watching PHS grow from the Arden
Hills campus to a 3-state region,” George
continued, “makes me feel pretty good
about the progress of the organization.”
So good that he joined the Triangle of
Caring Friends by including PHS in his
will. He is also a member of the Lillias
Joy Society for his generous donation to
the annual fund. “As a pastor, most of my
giving has been to the congregation I’ve
served,” said George, “but I want to go
beyond that. So PHS is another important
organization I support at what I hope is a
meaningful level.”
The Year
in Review
The aging of our population is creating
significant needs in our nation and the states
where Presbyterian Homes & Services serves.
“And whatever
you do, whether in
word or deed, do
it all in the name
of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to
God the Father
through him.”
– Colossians 3:17 NIV
SPRING 2010
We are entrusted with Christ’s call to
serve the spiritual, physical, social, and
emotional well-being of older adults and in
so doing, to help meet these emerging and
unprecedented societal needs.
Many of the older adults we serve,
employees we partner with, and volunteers
who make a marked difference have been
impacted adversely by the economic
downturn, the affects of which we
continue to experience. More changes are
imminent as state governments struggle
to meet basic needs in sustainable ways,
while facing historic budget deficits.
Fortunately, PHS is positioned to serve
older adults effectively within this climate
and its challenges.
In 2009, we adopted a new mission
statement to focus clearly on our purpose
in the midst of these challenges. Our
mission is to enrich the lives of older
adults through services and communities
that reflect the love of God. Our vision is
to provide more choices and opportunities
for more older adults to live well; all within
our values of compassion, service, people,
stewardship, Christian ministry, and
growth & innovation. Our mission, vision,
and values are reflected in a number
of ways through the stories told in this
edition of Perspectives.
While we have grown and been blessed
in many ways, we have also increased our
efforts in 2009 to be a leading provider
in home and community-based services.
We were among the first long-term care
organizations in the nation to have a
Medicare-certified home care agency and,
in our history, we have pioneered a number
of community-based programs. Creative
Independence and Creative Senior Dining
were trademarked in 2009 and we continue
to extend our legacy of innovation. Sharon
Klefsaas, Executive Director of Operations,
and Bill Hagstrom, Director of Creative
Senior Dining, will introduce you to these
initiatives in more detail on the next page.
We, at PHS, are called and motivated to be
visionary and innovative. We are also called
to provide services of all kinds for older
adults at all income levels. Twenty percent
of those we serve today are very low
income, and one-third of our communities
offer choices designed for moderateincome
people. In addition, we will continue
to influence policy, remain service-minded,
and effective in a dramatically changing
social and economic landscape.
“We were among the first longterm
care organization in the
nation to have a Medicarecertified
home care agency
and, in our history, we have
pioneered a number of
community-based programs.”
Prayerfully, we are committed to honor and
fulfill Christ’s call to be faithful stewards
so that we may be a blessing and make a
meaningful difference in the lives of our
residents and their families, our volunteers
and staff, and the greater community.
Creative Independence In-Home Care
Living well at home
Medicare funded in-home services of
Creative Independence (CI) have seen a
year of changes. In 2009, the client base
has grown from 75 active clients to 450
active clients currently. We have provided
services for 1,725 persons over the last
12-month period. The primary area of
growth was from the PHS assisted living
residents. Transitional Care referrals have
increased and our work with the Living at
Home Block Nurse Program in the St. Paul
area is broadening our reach.
Creative Independence staff has also
changed and grown. Our staff, which
includes case managers, RN’s, LPN’s;
physical, occupational and speech
therapists; nutritionists, home health
aides and home care aides, work together
as a team to deliver care that demonstrates
the mission and values of PHS.
Creative Senior Dining
Serving meals with a smile
2009 was a year of startup and growth
for Creative Senior Dining. Through
partnerships with the Metropolitan Area
Agency on Aging and others, Creative
Senior Dining has served almost 400,000
meals to the low and very low-income
seniors in the Twin Cities communities.
In the first year, Creative Senior Dining
focused on diversity and quality of service.
We have transformed our 22 congregate
meals sites from disposable kitchen
products with lower quality food to sites
focused on serving the best quality food
possible on real plates with real flatware.
We have added sites that cater to Jewish,
Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Native
We implemented an electronic medical
record system, including laptop computers
for all CI professional staff. We completed
our transition to the new OASIS-c
document for assessment of clients who
pay for services through federal support.
Creative Independence goals for the
upcoming year include marketing and
expansion of services to PHS residents,
Creative Senior Dining clients, Transitional
Care patients, local counties, the
Carondelet Village Consortium and the
Metro Area Living At Home Block Nurse
Programs. We will focus on standardization
of processes, application of more quality
systems especially in fiscal management
areas, a customer satisfaction survey
process, and integrated case plans
focused on decreasing hospitalization and
maximized medication management.
American seniors in the community, and
are looking forward to adding more diverse
locations in 2010.
Creative Senior Dining plans to expand the
number of seniors served this year. In 2010
we hope to serve over 500,000 meals to
over 5,000 seniors. To do this, we have
added a central kitchen to produce our own
meals and will utilize this kitchen in order to
grow additional congregate meal locations
and increase our Home Delivered Meals
program. We will also be launching an Online
Home Delivered Meal ordering program,
which will be piloted in the Highland Park
neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota.
Endowment
Endowment funds are an important source of stability and strength,
and will continue to grow in importance as the older adult population increases.
Gifts placed in endowment funds are held in trust and never spent. They are invested under the advisement
of the Finance Committee of our Board of Directors. The earnings from Endowment provide a permanent source
of revenue for mission benevolence, mission development, and quality of life enhancements.
To ensure its continued growth, Presbyterian Homes invests in Endowment, 10 percent of all unrestricted gifts
greater than $10,000 and less than $200,000 and 100 percent of all unrestricted gifts greater than $200,000.
In addition, we always honor donors’ wishes to have their gifts designated to Endowment.
Endowment provides long range stability, solid programs, and the flexibility for innovation while allowing PHS to
maintain its quality of care and services even during economic downturns. It allows PHS to practice philanthropy
and fulfill mission in every program area.
