About us 

SIK-Holz ® is a privately owned, medium-sized 

company in Flaeming, a region in Eastern Germany, 

south of Berlin. More than 22 years ago, 

a dairy farm turned into a master enterprise for 

wood sculptures with the central focus on planning, 

designing and production of customised 

children‘s playground equipment made from 

Robinia wood. The name SIK-Holz ® stands not 

only for individual products made of Robinia 

wood, it also stands for circa 240 people who 

manufacture these products. 

The individual design of the playground equipment 

requires a high level of versatility and creativity 

of our employees in direct as well as in 

administrative work. However, with every new 

project we can draw on tried and tested standards. 

While this basis is an essential source 

for new designs. Every new creation contains 

elements of traditional forms, procedures and 

knowledge. 

These are mostly carpenters, cabinet makers and 

wood sculptors, but also locksmiths, merchants 

and engineers. All of them exercise a high degree 

of responsibility which contributes to the 

success of the company. At SIK-Holz ® you find all 

services under one roof – from the planning of 

playground equipment to its installation on site. 

In the individual manufacturing processes you 

can follow the making of a product from a log to 

the finished piece of equipment.

SIK-Holz ® 

The customised planning of play areas is a dynamic 

and creative process that is based on 

reciprocity. By considering the needs of every 

single client we want to reach a new level of 

quality. Every piece of equipment is a custommade 

original of our craftsmanship. 

Our chief consultants have years of experience 

in designing playground equipment or have a 

degree in landscape architecture. Furthermore 

they are qualified safety inspectors for playgrounds 

and have relevant experience and 

knowledge in dealing with wood constructions. 

Their approach is very flexible and they are able 

to adjust to the demands of our clients and the 

conditions of new eco-social environments. 

In order to ensure the quality of our products 

in the future, initial and further vocational training 

plays an essential role at SIK-Holz ® . Furthermore 

we want young people to enjoy the 

activities of craftsmen or merchants in order to 

prepare them for an interesting professional life. 

In our company there are currently 20 young 

people being trained to become carpenters, 

wood sculptors or 

office management 

assistants.

During the planning of playground areas it is 

important to us that the different conditional, 

constitutional, social and physical requirements 

for children are being considered. Through customised 

planning of separate play areas we 

provide interesting and distinct sequences of 

play. We create playgrounds in which the balance 

between adventure and security is ensured 

throughout.

In our playgrounds, children do not move little 

virtual monsters through ‘Cyber Space’. Children 

aren’t being moved by devices, but they themselves 

have to actively move about. They interact

by discovering and using wooden, metal, 

earthen and also plastic objects. Everything 

is given its special character and is correspondingly 

interesting to children. Social skills can 

be learnt through interaction in the playground. 

Playing together in the sand box already teaches 

cultural interaction. 

Exercise, communication and development of 

the senses are the main concerns during the 

development of our playgrounds. Children are 

encouraged to learn, to set their own limits. 

Movement and courage are required.

… at any time, at any place 

Children play anywhere where there is something 

to discover. Under every stone, under 

every leaf, there are some creepy crawlies to be 

found. A child’s world of adventure starts at the 

front door. The city as a living space is, mathematically 

speaking, a three dimensional object. 

Within this object children move in all directions 

with incredible mobility. And playgrounds are 

more than just an area to play. Not only do they 

allow children to fly through the air on swings, 

but children can also gain experiences through 

sensual perception of sounds and smells or social 

communication in exchanges with other 

children. 

When children roam through our urban areas, 

maybe on the way to kindergarten, from 

one playground to another, or when strolling 

through town with their parents, then the road 

or path become a play area. As they ramble 

through town, children use roads and paths to 

get from one attraction to the next. The passageways 

of children criss-cross through our cities 

like secret spider webs. And at each intersection 

a child has to make a decision. Cross the road? 

Sink Wellingtons in a pond? Play hopscotch in 

the pedestrian area? … 

On these rambles the intersections of paths 

also develop neuralgic values. They essentially 

become synapses at which information is exchanged. 

Here children find out: What’s going 

on today? Where can I meet my friends? Where 

is the best slide? Has the new playground already 

opened? The information value alone makes 

these intersections highly interesting. They are 

somewhat mysterious. The signs are barely recognisable 

for adults. They are magical places. 

Small meeting points where children play. 

During the development of a city as a living 

space, it is important to know the areas where 

children roam, and to protect these from road 

traffic. Play areas in cities need to be connected 

to roaming areas to achieve a new quality of 

stay. This is why city development needs to follow 

new strategies and methods to achieve a 

new quality of urban life. 

’Spielleitplannung’, ordered planning of play, is 

an instrument which helps enforce children’s 

rights in towns and communities.

Robinia (Robinia pseudoacacia L.)

(GB), black locust, yellow locust (USA), robinia 

(NL, I), ak t (CS), bagrem, robinija (YU), salcam 

(RO), akacja biala (PL) ... 

Geographic distribution and importance to forestry: 

The Robinia tree comes originally from 

North America. It was named after Jean Robin, 

the court gardener in Paris, who brought the 

tree to France at the beginning of the 17th century. 

Robinias were originally introduced due to 

their beauty to be used as ornamental trees and 

in avenues. Their commercial properties were 

only discovered later. 

In the past Robinias were considered to have 

little value for forestry despite the fact that they 

grow very fast. Since the middle of the 19th century, 

when Robinias were increasingly planted, 

it was their ecological value that caused this development. 

Due to the extensive root system the trees are 

well suited to fix sandy soils. Robinias are also 

able to improve soils with their oxygen fixing 

abilities. It was only in the 20th century that 

Robinias became of importance to the forestry 

industry, mostly in Brandenburg, Hungary, Romania, 

the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Overall 

Robinias now cover almost 2 million ha world 

wide, ranking third amongst deciduous plantation 

trees after Eucalyptus and Poplars.

The term pseudo acacia indicates the similarity 

that exists between Robinias and Acacias, 

which are also legume bearing trees. A further 

characteristic are the pinnate leaves and flowers 

growing in bunches. However, Robinias and 

Acacias differ in their distribution. While Acacias 

occur in Middle- and South America, Africa, 

South Asia and Australia, in an area that 

stretches either side of the equator, Robinias 

are found further north. Their American name 

‘Black Locust’, originates in the fact that the 

fruits, which when dry still remain on the leaves 

of the tree long after it has shed its leaves, bear 

a strong resemblance to locusts. 

» Robinia wood is the material we use to make dreams come true. These are fantastic creations

Robinia wood develops a distinct colouration 

which contrasts sharply with the remarkably 

narrow (usually about 1cm) splint. Robinia 

wood is very heavy and hence is very solid, 

considerably more solid than oak for 

example. It is difficult to split, 

tough and flexible as well 

as pliable. It distinguishes 

itself through aboveaverage 

resistance across 

the fibres when exposed 

to dynamic stresses. The 

core of the Robinia wood 

has a high natural protection 

against wood damaging 

fungi and insects. Robinia 

is the only European wood 

that is categorised in the resistance 

class 1 (according to DIN EN 350-2). Hence Robinia 

wood can be used for outdoor structures 

without protective treatment, making it a great 

alternative to tropical woods. Robinia wood is 

more steadfast than any other type of wood and 

even bad quality wood lasts on average 20 in 

the ground. 

We use the wood in the construction of play 

grounds as, according to DIN EN 1176 1-7, it can 

be used without chemical treatment. 

Growth: Robinias grown in Europe reach 

a trunk height of 20 - 25 m 

and a diameter of 30 - 40 cm 

at optimum cutting age of 

about 40 - 50 years. The 

trunks have a tendency 

towards curved growth 

and irregular shapes and 

knots. Careful selection 

and care can positively 

influence shape and dimension. 

Branch-free log 

length at optimum cutting age 

can amount to 8-10 m. The current 

length of commercial logs is 2.5-4 m and a diameter 

of 25-40 cm.

Uses: Permitting quality of growth and measurements, 

Robinia wood has many uses due to 

its above-average qualities in relation to being 

tough, steadfast and durable. Traditional uses, 

for example as fencing posts, in mining or as 

firewood, are fading into the background more 

and more. In recent years the wood is increasingly 

being used for high quality products. This 

includes use in outdoor constructions which are 

both biologically and mechanically demanding.

SUSTAINABILITY 

Eco-label Documentation on the basis of European 

or international standardisation is not always 

economic in craftsmanship. Therefore – modelled 

after EMAS and DIN ISO 14001 – Brandenburg has 

established a reasonable system that is accommodated 

to the size of enterprises. This system comprises 

the awarding of the “Brandenburger Umweltsiegel 

im Handwerk” (Brandenburg‘s eco-label 

in craftsmanship), which is based on a successful 

checking of the environmental management system. 

This eco-label represents an evaluation of 

the business‘s environmental 

situation. The 

objective of the “Umweltsiegel” 

is to implement 

components 

of an environmental 

management system in 

a cost and time saving 

manner. The system is 

implemented through 

an accommodated and simple objective-orientated 

procedure without any loss of quality compared 

to other environmental

for its environmental

by the Potsdam Chamber of 

Crafts and Trades and the 

Brandenburg Ministry of Environment, 

Health and Consumer 

Protection in 2010. 

FSC One of the most important, worldwide operating 

organisations that have dealt with the sustainable 

development of forests for a long time 

is the FSC. of the Forest Stewardship Council is the 

preservation of forests. The FSC wants to achieve 

this objective not only by the protection of forests 

by law, but also by promoting a responsible 

forestry. Strict criteria guide the management of 

forests to avoid uncontrolled deforestation, the 

violation of human rights and environmental pollution.

leave our sculptures and equipment their individual

The natural form and structure of the wood isnot 

only considered during the development of 

our sculptures, play equipment and furniture for 

urban spaces, but it shapes the unique character 

and the expression of our objects. Still, our good 

understanding of shape prevents us from jeopardising 

the usefulness of the development from 

‘Too much Design’, following the ‘Form follows 

Function’ principle at all times. Children easily 

recognise the purpose and function of their play 

equipment. For us, design is useful art which 

helps us to create more safety where ‘just a safety 

cover’ isn’t enough. 

The appearance of our equipment makes it look 

like it was designed by children. Joints and connections 

reflect solid craftsmanship through refined 

technical, well designed solutions as well as 

high-standard construction. Content and shape 

always create a clear unit as only a safe design is 

a good design. 

Today, our environment is mostly shaped by rational, 

right-angled structures. In nature these shapes 

do not occur, which means they are essentially 

foreign to humans. Hence we consciously 

design our children’s play equipment to create an 

interesting dynamic in living spaces and achieve 

a harmonious interaction in urban settings. We 

are flexible in terms of expression and ensure the 

individual requirements of every different situation 

are met. We greatly enjoy creating entire play 

ground landscapes.

requires a flexible and dynamic result development. 

We have, more so than any other company, 

significantly shaped the market for the past 20

SIK-Holz ® 

colours 

Colours can both positively and negatively influence 

optical perception. Certain colour combinations 

direct the eye and can hence draw attention 

to a situation or a place. 

The use of colour can enhance the effect, that is 

to say the composition, of a playground. This gives 

the planner the opportunity to use colour to 

emphasise sections of the playground and hence 

further stimulate the children as they play. 

We use a solvent free herb varnish to colour all 

large equipment pieces and for most large play 

structures. Equipment with springs and smaller 

equipment is, according to their natural colouration, 

painted with water soluble acrylic paints 

and waxed afterwards. Our colours are salivaand 

sweat-proof and due to the composition of 

raw materials particularly suitable for children. 

All equipment is painted according to catalogue 

images, either in one colour or in a number of 

different colours. 

Upon request equipment can also be delivered 

unpainted or painted according to colour combinations 

of your choice. In both cases this needs 

to be included in writing in the order form. 

A reapplication of paint is recommended every 2 

- 5 years, depending on situation of the equipment 

and level of staining.

installation 

All play equipment is generally assembled in 

our buildings. For transport they are, as far as 

necessary, dissembled and marked according to 

their origin. Instructions are provided for their 

installation. 

Our company offers installation of elaborate and 

complex equipment. The costs for installation 

vary according to type and size of the equipment 

as well as installation location. We are more than 

happy to give you a quote for this. This offer is 

independent from the delivery and requires a 

separate contract.

The calculations of the installation cost in based 

on normal soil conditions up to a depth of 1.0 m 

and soil category 3 according to DIN 18300. Access 

for trucks up to 15 t needs to be possible, as well 

as installation by wheel loader or crane. SIK- 

Holz ® provides the measurement and installation 

of the delivered goods using statically sufficient 

points of support present on site. These have to 

be provided by the client.

SIK-Holz ® 

maintenance and care 

For playground equipment the same rules applies 

as for every other natural relationship. It 

requires care and maintenance from time to 

time. 

Control and maintenance are two important 

factors that play a large roll in the safety of 

playground equipment. Parents and children 

rely on the fact that playgrounds provide wellconstructed 

as well as regularly controlled and 

maintained equipment. 

The playground provider is obliged to ensure regular 

controls and following maintenance and 

their documentation. A checklist for appropriate 

maintenance is supplied at delivery or collection 

of every piece of equipment. This lists the types 

of controls required (visual or operational) and 

the exact time intervals (weekly, monthly, and 

annually) for the controls. 

Maintenance of equipment is not legally required. 

In relation to investment, regular care 

can extend the durability of the equipment and 

have positive effects on play and living areas 

around the playground.

Maintenance Work-shop 

In our two-day work shop we will provide you 

with theoretical knowledge and practical proficiency 

in playground maintenance. The complete 

work-shop program as well as the next workshop

Depending on location, deposits from air, rain 

and soil can cause pollution and provide an ideal 

breeding ground for fungi and mosses. Sun, 

frost and desiccation can also lead to changes 

of the surface. 

Cleaning and a new coat of paint on the equipment 

would be beneficial every 2 to 5 years. The 

frequency at which care will be required will decrease, 

as with every time the surfaces are cared

The duties of a play space planner, are to improve the 

eco-social living enviroment with the help of children‘s 

playground equipment by making it interesting and 

varied, creating as well an age-appropriate and richly 

varied play opportunity as a high quality amenity in 

playgrounds, parks and residential enviroments. 

The preceding chapters provide a variety of basic elements 

for the planning and design of these areas. 

Each year, we develop in close cooperation with local 

residents, children and designers in many places

Age range: 

The indication of the recommended age range is based 

on experience. With the combination of single play 

elements, interesting play opportunities can be created, 

suitable for a wider age range.

Installation times: 

The times indicated by us are met by normal-equipped 

installation companies.mThe requirement for carrying 

out a proper installation are described in the opening 

credits. For proper installation are provided on page 

16. In case of installations by hand or under difficult 

conditions more time should be allowed. 

Free height of fall: 

The free height of fall is the greatest vertical distance 

from the clearly intended body support to the impact 

area below. In determining the free height of fall, the 

possible movements of the equipment and of the user 

shall be taken into account.(standing, sitting, hanging). 

In general, this means that the maximum distance shall 

be taken. Note: the intended body support includes those 

standing surfaces to which access is provided. 

Foundations: 

Foundations apply to concrete quality C20/24 according 

to DIN 1045. In case of equipment being delivered with a 

ground anchor, a soil cover of at least 25 cm is required 

to ensure safety. The construction of the ground anchor 

can be taken from group 11. 

Weight: 

The weight measurements of the entire construction 

and the separate parts are important in the planning of 

transportation and installation of structures. The use of 

naturally grown wood, the diameter of which can vary, 

causes slight differences and variations in the actual 

weight of structures. 

Surfacing: 

The following table provides an overview of the 

numerical codes of the surface materials used in the 

catalogue and their minimum thickness. 100mm are 

to be added to loose filling material to compensate for 

spreading out through play.
