Wollongong is the largest city in the
Illawarra region and is located
approximately 80km south of
Sydney. The urban growth boundary
is naturally limited as it is set on a
narrow coastal plain bordered by
the Illawarra escarpment to the
west and the Pacific Ocean to the
east.
Wollongong is the third largest city
in New South Wales and the ninth
largest city in Australia. Built on the
back of the mining industry, the
Wollongong economy has grown to
become diverse and sophisticated.
It is undoubtedly the industrial and
commercial centre of the Illawarra
region and the economy of
Wollongong remains stable, despite
the current global uncertainties.
Wollongong also has a strong
tertiary education presence with the
University of Wollongong located at
the foothills of Mount Keira.
It has a student base of over 20,000,
which amounts to a significant
addition to the potential tenant
pool in Wollongong.
There are five department stores,
more than 60 super markets and
grocery stores and 1,400 retail
outlets in the area.
The area is well serviced by public
transport being serviced by the
South Coast railway line. Passenger
rail services connect Wollongong to
Nowra and Kiama in the south and
Sydney in the north. Wollongong
railway station also serves as the
hub for the bus network.
Wollongong is also serviced by
Wollongong airport for its air travel
needs.
