FOREWORD<br />

The sem<strong>in</strong>ar today is part of the project aims at enhanc<strong>in</strong>g the knowledge of H<strong>on</strong>g<br />

K<strong>on</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>on</strong> state-of-the-art technology <strong>and</strong> experience <strong>in</strong> civil <strong>and</strong> geotechnical<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Japan</strong>, especially <strong>on</strong> the latest <strong>in</strong>novative technology <strong>on</strong> the c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of<br />

tunnels.<br />

<strong>Japan</strong> has been well-known for its tunnel design <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> technology. We are<br />

thus very fortunate that a delegati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>Japan</strong>ese tunnel experts have k<strong>in</strong>dly accepted our<br />

<strong>in</strong>vitati<strong>on</strong> to share their experience <strong>on</strong> tunnel design <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> latest technology by<br />

present<strong>in</strong>g their papers <strong>in</strong> the sem<strong>in</strong>ar.<br />

The f<strong>in</strong>ancial fund<strong>in</strong>g from the Government of H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g Special Adm<strong>in</strong>istrative Regi<strong>on</strong><br />

under the Professi<strong>on</strong>al Services Development Assistance Scheme to support this sem<strong>in</strong>ar<br />

THE JAPANESE GEOTECHNICAL SOCIETY<br />

On the occasi<strong>on</strong> of the “<str<strong>on</strong>g>Sem<strong>in</strong>ar</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> Tunnell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Technologies</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Japan</strong> <strong>and</strong> H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g”,<br />

I would like to offer my c<strong>on</strong>gratulati<strong>on</strong>s to the H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g Geotechnical Society <strong>and</strong> the<br />

H<strong>on</strong>g K<strong>on</strong>g Instituti<strong>on</strong> of Eng<strong>in</strong>eers.<br />

The <strong>Japan</strong>ese Geotechnical Society (JGS) was set up <strong>in</strong> 1949 with 122 members to promote<br />

technical advances <strong>and</strong> research activities <strong>in</strong> the field of geotechnical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

As a member society of the Internati<strong>on</strong>al Society for Soil Mechanics <strong>and</strong> Geotechnical<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, the society now has about 10,000 members <strong>and</strong> has become <strong>on</strong>e of the most<br />

active <strong>and</strong> largest societies am<strong>on</strong>g over 100 societies <strong>in</strong> <strong>Japan</strong>.<br />

This time I feel h<strong>on</strong>ored that three experts from the JGS were <strong>in</strong>vited to this important<br />

sem<strong>in</strong>ar. S<strong>in</strong>ce they actively work <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>uously c<strong>on</strong>tribute to the field of the tunnell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

technology <strong>in</strong> <strong>Japan</strong>, I would expect that their presentati<strong>on</strong>s provide helpful <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong><br />
