2007-2008 Annual Report

Dear Friends & Supporters, 

The Center for Puppetry Arts has grown and 

matured as a unique Atlanta arts organization over 

our 29-year history. Today we are the largest nonprofit 

organization devoted to the art of puppetry 

in the U.S. One of our greatest strengths is that we 

have never waivered from our core mission – to 

educate and entertain the young and old through 

the magic of puppetry. 

The 2007-08 fiscal year was an exceptional one – 

with new honors and accolades and the offer of an 

incredible gift. The Center is entering an exciting 

new phase in its history. Not only are we reaching 

a new generation – the sons and daughters of 

the first children to enter our doors – we’re also 

expanding our reach with interactive technology 

and successfully connecting to new audiences 

through expanded programming. 

Without a doubt, one of the most momentous 

events in our history occurred this year. The 

selection of the Center by the family of Jim 

Henson as the proposed destination for their 

definitive collection honoring Jim Henson’s legacy 

is an incredible honor and an institution-changing 

gift. His creations have touched millions of people 

around the world. He was a genius of a man and 

also my dear friend. As we plan the construction of 

a new wing for these 500-700 objects and archival 

materials, we urge the community to rise to the 

challenge and join us in making the Center an 

international destination. 

The Henson objects will join what is already the 

nation’s most extensive collection of puppets from 

around the world. We recognize the incredible 

responsibility of safeguarding these rare and valuable 

artifacts; one of our goals is to achieve professional 

accreditation by the American Association of 

Museums (AAM). Thanks to the support of the 

Institute of Museum & Library Sciences and the 

National Endowment for the Humanities, we have 

begun taking the first steps in this process with 

grants to conduct detailed condition surveys and 

an inventory of our museum collection. 

Recognition of the Center as a valuable arts 

resource continues to grow with the presentation 

of our second Teacher’s Choice Award, Best Content 

Provider: Fine Arts Museum for our Distance 

Learning Program. Ten years ago, when we started 

taking the Center to children via interactive videoconferencing, 

it was cutting-edge. Since then, the 

demand for our arts-infused education programs 

exceeded the capacity of our single studio. Thanks 

to an Excelerator Grant from AT&T in 2007, we 

were able to add a second Distance Learning studio 

and provide much needed free programming to 

underserved Georgia schools. 

These are just a few of the highlights of our 

exceptional year, which you can read about inside 

this report. None of this would have been possible 

without the support of our many donors, audience 

members and visitors to our exhibits, our hard 

working volunteers and our talented and dedicated 

staff members. Thank you all for making the Center 

the most magical place in Atlanta!

About the Center for Puppetry Arts 

On September 23, 1978, Kermit the Frog, accompanied by his creator, Jim Henson, cut the 

ceremonial ribbon, officially opening the Center for Puppetry Arts. Founded by Vincent 

Anthony, Barbara and Bill Wylly Executive Director, the Center is the largest organization 

in the United States dedicated to the art form of puppetry and focuses on three areas of 

programming: performance, museum and education. 

Housed in a former school building to which $9 million in renovations have been made, 

the three-story Center includes the 350-seat Mainstage Theater, 170-seat Downstairs 

Theater, 70-seat Theater III, Love Family Atrium, permanent museum, special exhibits, library, 

Distance Learning Video Teleconferencing studios, workshop classrooms, multi-purpose 

room, Museum Store, and administrative offices. 

Each year, the Center for Puppetry Arts brings quality family programming to Atlanta. 

National traveling puppetry troupes set up shop at the Center during the family-oriented 

SummerFest. The Family Series provides a collection of adapted classic stories and new 

works performed in a variety of puppetry styles by the Center company as well as visiting 

artists. The New Directions Series, which is geared toward teen and adult audiences, is also 

comprised of shows by the Center company and visiting artists from around the country. 

In addition to presenting riveting productions, the Center also houses three museum gallery 

spaces and offers a variety of classes and workshops for adults and children alike. Puppets: 

The Power of Wonder is an inviting, interactive museum that provides hands-on, educational 

fun with over 350 puppets from around the world. Additional puppets and objects are on 

display in special exhibits throughout the building. 

The Center’s Education Program offers workshops for children and adults as well as 

special programs for teachers. Create-A-Puppet Workshops, thematically offered in 

conjunction with each SummerFest and Family Series performance, allow participants to 

make a puppet relating to the show. Educational Outreach programs, available throughout 

the metro Atlanta area, focus on the global aspects of puppetry. The Center’s 

Distance Learning program, which provides two-way interactive educational programming 

via videoconferencing technology, enables the Center to broaden its services to schools, 

libraries, and other agencies across the United States and abroad. Distance Learning has 

served 38 states, 3 countries, and over 80,000 students and teachers since the program’s 

inception. All of the Center’s educational activities meet Georgia performance and 

curriculum standards in Language Arts, Fine Arts, and character education.

The Center also serves as the headquarters of UNIMA-USA, the American branch 

of the organization Union Internationale de la Marionnette, the world’s oldest 

theater organization. 

Thanks to a generous grant from The 

Goizueta Foundation, the Girl Scouts of 

Northwest Georgia were able to take a free 

trip to the Center during the 2007-08 Season.

Distance Learning 

The Center’s unique Distance Learning Program, a dynamic, interactive virtual field 

trip experience, continues to present arts-infused programming to participants across 

North America and beyond. During the 2007-08 Season, the studio presented 889 

programs. Schools, libraries, senior centers, museums and children’s hospitals were 

some of the sites served. The program was honored with the 2008 Teacher’s Choice 

Award for Best Content Provider - Fine Arts Museum category. The Center was also 

honored with the 2007-08 CILC Pinnacle Award as a top ten content provider in North 

America. Both awards are voted upon by educators and administrators. 

Since 1998, the Distance Learning Program has used interactive videoconferencing 

to primarily reach rural and underserved audiences that are unable to access the 

Center’s hands-on educational programs due to time, distance, and/or financial barriers. 

Participants can learn about science, social studies, language arts, puppetry in 

other cultures, and other topics through these engaging, innovative programs tailored 

toward various age levels and audiences.

AT&T - Excelerator grant 

AT&T’s generous contribution of an Excelerator grant of $14,500 in 2007 helped to fund the 

creation of a second Distance Learning studio at the Center and the provision of free Distance 

Learning workshops to underserved Georgia schools. As a result, the grant was instrumental in 

the Center’s ability to increase the capacity of its Distance Learning Program in order to provide 

44 workshops of hands-on, curriculum-based arts education activities to a total of 810 students 

in underserved schools across Georgia. 

Tandberg Gift 

In 2007, the Distance Learning Program received a new videoconferencing unit under the 

Tandberg Content Provider Loaner Program. Only three content providers were chosen 

nationally to receive this generous gift. The Center was the only organization to receive the 

loan for two years due to the stellar reputation of the program. We could not have opened the 

second studio without this generous sponsorship. 

Meet the Director! 

Bobby Box, director of Tales of Edgar Allan Poe, one of the Center’s New Directions Series shows, 

gave students a behind-the-scenes look at classic literature brought to life on the puppet stage. 

Students engaged in a dialogue with Box about Poe’s work and discussed design concepts 

of the performance. DVD clips of show excerpts, models of the stage design and puppets 

from the performance enhanced this program for the participants. Students viewed excerpts 

from some of the following 

scenes: The Tell-Tale Heart, 

The Raven, The Bells, The 

Black Cat, and M.S. in a Bottle.

Outreach 

During the 2007-08 fiscal year, the Center for 

Puppetry Arts’ Outreach Program conducted 

29 curriculum-based workshops in and 

around Metro Atlanta. Educators and students 

learned with hands-on demonstrations using 

both replica and authentic puppets from 

around the world. In addition, students built and 

decorated puppets and learned simple puppet 

manipulation. These activities were provided to 

numerous public and private schools; community 

and governmental organizations, like Coweta 

County Department of Family and Children 

Services; and summer camps, reaching an 

impressive 2,500 people.

The Outreach Program also continued its 

relationship with two locations of Camp Kudzu, 

a non-profit organization providing education, 

recreation and peer-networking programs for 

children living with type 1 Diabetes in Georgia.

The Future 

Jim Henson Wing 

When the Center for Puppetry Arts 

opened its doors in 1978, Jim Henson and 

Kermit the Frog were there to cut the 

ceremonial ribbon. Twenty-nine years later, 

the Henson family chose the Center as the 

proposed destination for their definitive 

collection honoring Jim Henson’s legacy.

This momentous gift of between 500 

and 700 puppets, props, scenic elements, 

posters, sketches, drawings, films and 

videos will be housed in a future Jim Henson 

Wing, to be included in the Center’s new 

museum space, tentatively scheduled to 

open in 2012. 

On Long-Term Display 

On July 25, 2007, Cheryl Henson was at the Center to open Jim Henson: A Man & His Frog, 

inaugurating a series of special exhibitions leading to the proposed Jim Henson Wing at the 

Center for Puppetry Arts. Jim Henson: A Man & His Frog profiles Jim Henson and the world’s 

most famous frog. Photographs of the two, dating back to their early days with Sam and Friends, 

accompany a magnificent photo-display puppet of Kermit the Frog and a special portrait of 

Kermit and Miss Piggy as Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara. 

On Long-Term Display 

On Sunday, September 23, 2007, the Center celebrated its 29th anniversary with a very 

special event: the opening of the new special exhibit, Jim Henson: Puppeteer. Jane and Heather 

Henson cut the ribbon to open the exhibit, followed by a special Q&A panel where they were 

joined by members of The Jim Henson Legacy, exhibit curator Bradford Clark and Vincent 

Anthony, the Executive Director of the Center.

The exhibit features many puppets that Jim created or performed including Ernie, Rowlf the 

Dog, the La Choy Dragon, Dr. Teeth, the Swedish Chef, and Bugsy Them. In addition to these 

puppets, the exhibit features personal archival photographs, quotes, a behind-the-scenes video 

and seldom seen designs, doodles, and sketches.

Permanent & Special Exhibits 

Puppets: The Power of Wonder 

Rated by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution as “one of the top five exhibits in Georgia,” and by 

MSN.com as one of the top 10 children’s museums in the United States, Puppets: The Power 

of Wonder is a hands-on museum displaying more than 350 puppets from various time 

periods and countries around the world. The Center’s permanent exhibit was curated by 

Dr. Michael Malkin, Professor of Theatre, California Polytechnic State University. 

Puppets: The Power of Wonder includes Chinese hand puppets, Indonesian shadow puppets, 

African rod puppets, and puppets from many other countries. Also featured are American 

puppets such as a Skeksis and Fishface from Jim Henson’s fantasy productions The Dark 

Crystal and Labyrinth, and two “Pigs in Space” from The Muppet Show. 

Salem the Talking Cat: 

Seven Years of “Sabrina” Magic! 

June 22, 2007 - June 29, 2008 

Through the courtesy of CBS Paramount 

Television, the Center became the home to 

Salem Saberhagen, the wisecracking cablecontrolled 

cat from the hit TV series Sabrina 

the Teenage Witch. On display were two versions 

of the Salem puppet, his girlfriend Hillary, the 

infamous “waffle Salem” and costumes, props 

and assorted memorabilia from the 1996- 

2003 show run. The exhibit was curated by the 

lead puppeteer of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, 

Thom Fountain. 

Museum News 

Jeremy Underwood joined the Center in 

August 2007 as Curator of Exhibits. He 

received a Master of Arts degree in Museology 

from the University of Florida and has worked 

in art museums, natural history museums, and 

historic homes in Florida and Georgia. 

Melissa McCarriagher started at the Center 

in January 2008 as the Assistant Museum 

Registrar. She came to us from the Ringling 

Museum of Art’s Circus Museum where 

she held the position of Tibbals Collection 

Manager. She holds a BFA in ceramic art from 

Alfred University where she also worked as a 

gallery assistant. 

A long-term goal of the museum program is 

to achieve professional accreditation by the 

American Association of Museums (AAM). 

AAM accreditation is the seal of approval from 

the museum field that recognizes a museum’s 

commitment to excellence, collections care, 

accountability, and continued institutional 

improvement. AAM’s accreditation program 

is the museum field’s primary instrument for 

quality assurance and public accountability. 

All of the improvements being made by the 

museum staff will increase the museum’s 

accountability and prepare the museum for 

AAM accreditation. The Center plans to 

begin the formal application process after the 

opening of the future Jim Henson Wing.

Off-Site Exhibits 

Along with the Center’s on-site exhibits, puppets from the museum collection are on display at 

several locations throughout Atlanta. 

AtlanTix, Underground Atlanta 

Underground Atlanta, a historic retail and entertainment center in Downtown, is also 

home to AtlanTix, a half-price ticket booth run by the Atlanta Coalition of Performing Arts. 

Visitors to Underground and the booth can view several of the Center’s puppets, including 

Leonardo Da Vinci from Avanti, Da Vinci!, as well as a Gent from the Opening Ceremonies of the 

1996 Olympics. 

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport 

Travelers can take a refreshing break while entering or exiting the airport’s International 

Terminal and view several cases of puppets from the Center’s permanent collection. The puppets 

represent puppetry styles several countries, including Indonesia, China and Egypt. 

WSB-TV 

On September 29, 1948, WSB-TV went on the air. Among the programs that viewers watched 

that night was a children’s television show, Woody Willow & Friends, with marionettes manipulated 

by Don and Ruth Gilpin. In 1983, the Gilpins donated puppets and memorabilia from the show 

to the Center’s permanent collection. Today, some of those puppets, including Woody Willow 

himself, are on display at the television station. 

Research Library 

The Center for Puppetry Arts’ research library is the largest library dedicated solely to 

puppetry arts in the country and possibly the world. The library collection consists of over 

2,000 books, periodicals, and audio/visual materials. The library is also the repository for the 

Center for Puppetry Arts archives, containing information and material from the Center’s 

opening in 1978 through today as well as archival videos of Center performances. The research 

library is utilized by scholars, students, teachers, and puppeteers from around the world.

During the 2007-08 Season, Center visitors enjoyed over 700 performances, including the 

debut of two world premieres by Artistic Director Jon Ludwig: Duke Ellington’s Cat and 

Cinderella Della Circus. The Center Company presented four Family Series shows for patrons 

of all ages and two New Directions Series (NDS) shows for teens and adults, including a 

reprisal of Bobby Box’s critically acclaimed Anne Frank: Within & Without, which played to 

sold-out audiences in 2006.

“Ever since I was blown away by the life-sized, break-dancing 

skeletons of Heaven and Hell Tour in 1991, I’ve eagerly 

followed the Center for Puppetry Arts’ original work, 

particularly the creations of Artistic Director Jon Ludwig.”

Jon Ludwig, Artistic Director, is an accomplished performer, director 

and theater designer, and has worked at the Center for Puppetry Arts 

since 1978. Ludwig has written and directed more than 15 unique shows 

for the Center’s Family Series and New Directions Series. Avanti, Da 

Vinci! The Secret Adventures of Leonardo da Vinci, which he co-wrote with 

Jason von Hinezmeyer, sold out its world premiere in Atlanta before 

traveling to the Slovak Republic in 2004. Six of Ludwig’s productions, 

including his NDS shows Safe as Milk and Heaven and Hell Tour and his 

family shows Duke Ellington’s Cat and American Tall Tales, have received 

UNIMA-USA Citations of Excellence in the Art of Puppetry, which are 

considered to be puppetry’s highest honor.

The puppets used in Center Company shows are designed, built, painted, and 

costumed by hand in the on-site Puppet Shop. During interviews with The 

Atlanta-Journal Constitution and Atlanta Magazine, Jason von Hinezmeyer, Resident 

Puppet Builder, and Jon Ludwig, Artistic Director, talked about what it’s like to 

create the Center’s performance puppets.

How much does it cost to 

create the average puppet? 

Jason: From $20 to hundreds 

of thousands of dollars. A lot 

of times, it’s not the materials, 

it’s the time that goes into it. 

Jon: It’s the craftsmanship. 

You can build them out of 

papier-mâché and wood and 

stuff out of the junk yard, and 

it’ll cost hardly anything, but 

it’s the labor involved − and 

the artistry. There aren’t many 

good builders. Jason’s one of 

the best in the country. 

What is the most 

challenging part of 

your job? 

Jason: There are so many 

different things you have to 

know how to do − sewing, 

sculpting, casting, painting. 

Builders also have to deal 

with the size and weight of 

the puppet, not to mention 

the challenges of budgets 

and deadlines. 

What do you learn to 

prepare for this kind 

of career? 

Jason: One of the important 

things about the University 

of Connecticut [the only U.S. 

university to offer a degree in 

puppetry] is that every class 

is about building AND 

performing. 

Jon: To me, the true definition 

of a puppeteer is somebody 

that can do it all: build it, 

perform it, write for it − and 

that’s the attraction.

Visiting Artists 

Throughout the 2007-08 Season, the Center hosted a variety of artists from around North America. The Center kicked off the season 

with SummerFest, which featured a series of two-week performances by three visiting puppet troupes. Audiences were delighted with wellknown 

folk and fairy tales and one not-so-well-known-but-totally-hilarious story about the legendary Banana Kid. 

This season was significant in that a concerted effort was made to reach out to all of the 

diverse cultural groups who call Atlanta home. Anansi the Spider and Duke Ellington’s Cat 

illustrated the amazing contributions of African and African-American communities, while 

La Cucarachita Martina (Martina, the Little Roach) and The Encounter of Juan Bobo and Pedro 

Animal helped to reach out to Atlanta’s Spanish-speaking communities. Besides just enchanting 

audiences, these performances also marked an important step toward the Center’s 

commitment to programming which celebrates cultural diversity within our community. 

As part of the New Directions Series (NDS), Paul Zaloom entertained the adult crowd with 

a modern adaptation of a Middle Eastern “Karagoz” shadow play. In addition, Xperimental 

Puppetry Theatre (XPT) brought together artists and students from across disciplines to 

explore and experiment with the vast menagerie of styles within the art of puppetry. For 

over twenty years, XPT has fostered the development and imagination of countless artists in 

Atlanta and beyond.

The Center received great press coverage for all activities! This year we 

continued to enjoy the help of Manning Selvage & Lee and together garnered 

approximately 200 media placements, including print coverage in The Atlanta 

Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Latino, Creative Loafing, The New York Times, and others, 

as well as coverage on TV stations WAGA Fox 5 and CNN. 

Notable coverage included: 

• The New York Times broke news of the proposed Henson Wing 

to the nation with an article on the cover of the Arts section. 

Locally, news of the Wing broke with an article written by 

Kirsten Tagami of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The story 

was on the cover of the Arts section with subsequent stories 

on all broadcast news channels, while Atlanta Peach Magazine 

featured a double-page spread, “The Muppets Take Atlanta.” 

• Keisha Williams’ Focus Atlanta and Atlanta Daily World 

covered the Shoemaker & the Elves Children’s Shoe Drive. 

• The Center was featured in several Latino news media. 

La Cucarachita Martina (Martina, the Little Roach) got cover 

articles in both Mundo Hispanico and Atlanta Latino. 

Additionally, La Vision covered The Encounter of Juan Bobo 

& Pedro Animal with a feature article and a ticket giveaway 

contest. 

• PSAs for La Cucarachita Martina and Juan Bobo were 

recorded in Spanish and played on Viva Atlanta, La 

Raza and El Patron. 

• Duke Ellington’s Cat, Anne Frank: Within & Without 

and Cinderella Della Circus received rarely given 

“A” ratings from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution 

(AJC) critic. Cinderella Della Circus was featured

section just before the show opened.

Grants & Funding Highlights 

The Goizueta Foundation 

The Center for Puppetry Arts is currently in the second year of a $503,103 grant from The Goizueta Foundation, which aims to support 

educational programs that promote sustainable change and have a long-term impact in the community. 

Part of the grant helps to support development, production, and marketing costs for three literature- and history-based family productions 

through 2009. Many arts and arts education activities are no longer available in public schools because of downsizing and budget cuts. The 

Center’s Family Series productions provide an important service to schools by addressing an area of Georgia’s required curriculum that 

many lack the resources to teach on their own. 

The remainder of the grant helps the Center with an exciting new audience development initiative. The Center is always working to reach 

new and more diverse audiences. This funding helps the Center provide free tickets and transportation scholarships, particularly to groups 

serving in the Latino and Asian-American communities who would like to visit the Center but find the costs of transport and tickets difficult 

to work into their already tight budgets.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the 

primary source of federal support for the nation’s 

122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The Institute’s 

mission is to create strong libraries and museums that 

connect people to information and ideas.

In 2007, the Institute of Museum and Library Services generously awarded a 

Conservation Project Support grant in the amount of $17,250 to help the 

Center’s Museum Program conduct a detailed condition survey of its Asian 

collection of 650 puppets and related performing objects. Renée Stein served 

as Consulting Conservator and Elizabeth Nunan, who is pursuing her M.A./ 

C.A.S. in Art Conservation at Buffalo State College in Buffalo, NY, served as the 

Conservation Intern. They worked with Museum Program staff to plan and 

conduct the survey, which took place over a one-year period beginning 

September 1, 2007 and ending August 31, 2008. The condition survey 

consisted of an assessment of each object in the Asian collection, the 

development of treatment recommendations, the testing of proposed treatments 

and housing techniques for a small group of representative objects, and a staff 

development workshop. 

National Endowment for the Humanities 

In 2007, the Center was awarded a Preservation Assistance Grant 

of $5,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) 

to engage Renée Stein as Consulting Conservator to conduct a 

detailed condition survey of 250 other puppets and related 

performing objects selected from the Center’s Museum collection. 

These objects have been prioritized for display in a new long-term 

exhibition of the Center’s permanent collection that is currently 

being planned (assisted in part by a generous NEH Museum Planning 

Grant), which will explore puppetry’s diverse roles in the human 

experience across global history. Scholars and puppetry experts 

working with the Center have deemed these objects to be critical 

to the exhibition’s content. When the assessment is complete, the 

Center will be better able to determine how to best stabilize and 

preserve these objects for public display.

String Fling Gala 2007 

Guests were transported to Brazil at the Carnaval 

themed String Fling Gala 2007 held at the Georgia 

Tech Hotel and Conference Center’s Grand Ballroom 

on September 15. The event’s 300 guests enjoyed a 

fine meal and a special performance featuring a lifesized 

Carmen Miranda puppet by Teatro SEA from 

New York City. 

Live and silent auction items included an exclusive 

tour of the Sesame Street Studios, getaways to France 

and Italy, as well as art, jewelry and entertainment 

items – all to benefit a good cause. More than 

$250,000 was raised from the event, making it the 

Center’s most successful Gala to date. Funds from 

the Gala help ensure the Center is one of the most 

accessible arts organizations in Atlanta and support 

education and other programming.

agencies, and individuals. Major funding for the Center is provided by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners under the guidance of the Fulton County
