A brand new business is starting up at <strong>Purchase</strong>. Herb and Flow is the result of<br />
the partnership between Katherine Lo and Ruben Murrero, who decided to put<br />
their graphic design skills to use in a way that might earn them some profit. The<br />
merchandise is t-shirts designed by Lo and Murrero focused on things that will appeal<br />
to <strong>Purchase</strong> students with the hope of branching out to non-<strong>Purchase</strong> related designs<br />
if the shirts become popular.<br />
The merchandise is set to debut at Pre-shock. When Lo and Murrero approached<br />
WPSR, the <strong>Purchase</strong> radio station and host of the Pre-shock event, WPSR asked them<br />
to design a t-shirt to fit in with the Preshock<br />
campaign, which is “Pre-pear for<br />
Pre-shock.” As they are debuting their<br />
t-shirts at <strong>this</strong> event, they have plans for<br />
other Culture Shock related shirts to<br />
produce, such as one that says “Toxic Shock<br />
Syndrome,” and another that says, “Culture<br />
Shock Treatment.” <strong>In</strong> addition to their event<br />
-specific t-shirts, they also are going to be<br />
selling <strong>Purchase</strong> t-shirts with things like<br />
“Where the Olde Parties At,” and, “No I<br />
don’t have an extra cig.”<br />
Lo is more focused on the typographic<br />
aspect of the design. She focuses on which<br />
fonts are used and how they are laid out.<br />
It is with her silkscreen that they intend<br />
to manufacture the first run of shirts. Lo<br />
currently owns black white and red fabric<br />
inks. Their initial designs will be limited to those colors, but as with other aspects of<br />
the venture, if successful there will be expansion into other colors. Murrero is more<br />
focused on the embellishments and final designs of the t-shirt. He is providing the funds<br />
for the purchase of the blank t-shirts to be silk-screened. They work collaboratively on<br />
the final stencil, but Murrero likes to design by hand so he is doing some of the new<br />
designs by hand and then scanning them into a computer before the final stencil is<br />
printed. He also designs the website and is in the process of designing the final logo<br />
for the company.<br />
So far there are no product images up on the Herb and Flow website,<br />
but that is expected to change very soon. After the debut at Pre-shock, the<br />
main method of sale will be the website. Herb and Flow also intends to make<br />
appearances at <strong>Purchase</strong> flea markets. After the initial debut, they intend to<br />
distribute business cards.<br />
The shirts will be selling for $8 and, for an additional fee, Herb and Flow<br />
will make a custom design.<br />
