1.) Bring five cups of water to a boil, add a dash
of salt, and throw in the rice. Cover the pot, turn
the heat down on low, and let it sit for around
twenty to thirty minutes- don’t be afraid to
check it once in a while.
Regular white rice takes a very short time
to cook, around twenty to thirty minutes—the
same goes for Jasmine and Basmati as well.
Brown rice however, usually takes about 40
minutes to an hour and a half (depending) to
cook, and wild rice will often take well over an
hour. Either way, you might want to check the
back of your rice package well before you start
cooking (since it nearly always has the instructions
on it,) and plan ahead.
Note: When making rice, two cups of water
per one cup of rice is a good rule of thumb.
2) Chop up the onion and garlic and set them
aside. Meanwhile, heat up a little bit of oil (you
don’t need a lot!) in a good-sized pot on the
stove. Once the pot gets hot, throw in the garlic
and onions, cooking them for a couple of minutes
till the onion begins looking transparent
(or begins to yellow, whatever happens first). If
you wanted to throw in some other veggies, this
would be a good time to do so. Depending on
what they are, you can throw them in after the
onions and garlic (e.g. peppers, squash, zucchini,
tomatoes, etc.) or throw them in before
hand (such as your bigger and heavier veggies
like potatoes).
3.) Open up the cans and throw in all the beans.
If you want their consistency to be a bit thicker,
you can drain some of the liquid that comes in
the can (though preferably not all of it). Beans
will come pre-cooked in the can (and are usually
pre-salted as well), so essentially you’re
just heating them up in the pot. So go ahead,
toss them all in and mix it up real well. With
black beans sometimes I like to mash them
up a little bit with a spoon, just before they’re
done cooking. This will also help thicken up
their consistency if you like (and is also a great
way to turn your delicious cooked beans into
an equally delicious bean dip, by the way).
4.) When the beans seem nice and hot, after
maybe 5-10 minutes of cooking over that medium
heat, add your salt, pepper and spices to
the pot (best a little bit at a time). Now you’re
ready to eat. If you had planned well, the rice
will hopefully already be done by this point. So
now just serve it up and bask in the glory of
your own home cooked meal!
Note: You can eat beans straight from a can, in
case one is truly hungry. This little trick has
provided me a number of impromptu dinners
when the occasion called for such drastic measures.

Nice choice! I think I would have to go with
Rocky from Rocky and Bullwinkle and Gerald
from Hey Arnold. Okay, so it’s September
and people are still talking about The Dark
Knight. Don’t you think enough is enough?
NO WAY! I grew up reading Batman comics,
and I still do. The last movie was amazing;
Heath Ledger did such an amazing job. That
movie was so intense; I saw it twice in the same
day [kind of nerdy pathetic laugh]
I guess you’re the nerd and I’m the causal
Batman fan. I thought it was great. Katie
Holmes was hotter than Maggie Gyllenhal,
Heath should win an award but if someone
else asks me what I think could have been
more visually pleasing I’m going Christian
Bale on his or her mother.
Yeah Katie Holmes is hot, but Maggie Gyllenhal
has this really unique hotness/classiness to her.

I think she looks like a young grandma.

Counterfeiters, now that’s some compelling
shit.
I’ve never heard of them are they a band?
Nope, It’s this movie about a labor camp
during the holocaust. Speaking of hip new
bands, you’re in a band, right?
Yeah I play bass in Brick Physics, which is
a band here at Purchase, as well as playing
guitar in Liberte a band I’ve got back home.

SO graffiti art has had a pretty big impact
on the skateboarding world, which comes
first for you, and when did you realize you
would never do a 900.
[Brohym-Laughs] I just recently stopped
skateboarding a couple years ago, and I still
have a deep appreciation for it and enjoy
just cruising on my board. I’m more into art
nowadays and ollying a 20 step was never
my idea of a great time. I guess more creative
creating something with a brush rather than
grinding a rail.

you represent a club, but chances are most of
you are in at least one club at Purchase. Talk
to your president. Tell them you want to be the
CoCOaS representative, or at least that you
want to learn more about what happens there.
If you still don’t feel like going that’s fine.
But I will be here every other week keeping
board when I was in 8 th grade. It seems like
skateboarding has lost some of it’s intrigue
over the years, or maybe that’s just me?
I agree, I think it’s dying down but I think it
could be a good thing. Because now it’s moving
away from the mainstream and back down
to the “underground” where it first started.
It’s definitely better for the true skateboard
culture.
Favorite Tony Hawk video game?
I only had the first one, keeping it OG.
After number 5, I gave up. There are only
so many virtual skateboarding tricks I
can do before I stop believing. There’s a
pretty prevalent group of skateboarders on
campus and it seems like there’s maybe 5
or 6 football players, Why not build a skate
park instead of an Astroturf field?
I think the Astroturf was a waste of money, no
offense to the athletes who raised the money
because I think that’s pretty impressive but
Astroturf? Skateboarding is huge here at
purchase. It would be cool to build a park
rather than some shitty ramps in the stood and
a football field for our non-existent football
team.
Word, I think we should have an Astroturf
skate park? How does that sound?
I think you’re onto something. Can we talk
about the art club for a minute? I like going to
art club, obviously because I’m an artist and
I think everyone should really hit that up this
semester. The arts will change your life Sam.
Yeah, I’m into Picasso and Dali, but isn’t
everyone else just ripping them off?
Have you been to the exhibit at the MOMA?
There are some neat films that Dali directed; I
had no idea he was into films. They were pretty
surreal [artist joke]. If you haven’t checked it
out make sure you go soon. Picasso himself
said, “Good artists copy, great artists steal.”
