Parra Pedal, safer cycling in Western Sydney
NSW Government will
contribute $350,000 funding to the
‘Parra Pedal’ for the Amy Gillett
Foundation event, to be held on Sunday
13 February 2011.
Launched by Roads Minister David
Borger, the event will be a fun way to
promote safe bike-riding, using extensive
off-road facilities built in western Sydney
over the past decade and is the first
time a major cycling event dedicated
specifically to attract the 2 million people
of Greater Western Sydney.
The Parra Pedal for the Amy Gillett
Foundation route is designed so that
cyclists with different levels of skill and
confidence can select a ride that suits
their capabilities.
“There will be two main loops,
measuring approximately 20 km and
40 km, the rides start and finish in
Parramatta Park.
Amy Gillett Foundation Patron Simon
Gillett said the Parra Pedal is an effective
way of beginning the process of safe
cycling in an effort to reduce the number
of cyclist deaths and injuries on NSW
roads. Mr Gillett said an increase in the
number of bike sales in recent years has
reinforced the notion that cycling is a
more convenient, healthier and more
environmentally friendly alternative to
driving short distances.
“What’s more important to the Amy
Gillett Foundation is that both cyclists
and motorists share the road safely by
obeying the road rules and respecting
each other,” he said.
CEO of Bicycle New South Wales
Omar Khalifa said the event will
highlight what can be achieved through
planning, investment and education.
“As the peak body, we focus many of
our programs on advocating for better
cycle ways and encouraging more
people to cycle safely – whether for
recreation or commuting,” Mr Khalifa
said.
The Parra Pedal launch coincides
with NSW Bike Week - a state-wide
NSW Government initiative that raises
the profile of cycling as a healthy, easy,
low cost and environmentally friendly
alternative to the car for short trips.
Mountain Biking gets a boost
Sydney mountain biking
was given a boost recently when
Hornsby Council voted to support the
establishment of a facility within the
Hornsby Park / Old Mans Valley area
(subject to funding).
Hornsby Shire Mountain Bike
Alliance will be assisting Council with
the design and construction of trails.
“It’s a facility - not just a XC trail”,
said Campbell King from the Alliance.
“So there will be various trail types and
features incorporated. Berms, rollers,
jumps, skill park features.”
Unfortunately however, Hornsby
Council is still looking for funding for
the new facility which will be be reliant
on grants and community muscle.
You can register your willingness to
help with construction on the HSMBA
website http://hsmba.info
For the time, being Hornsby Council
has put on hold the World Trail route to
Westleigh. NPWS are producing new
guidelines for land managers and this
will hopefully give Council confidence
in tackling more sensitive trails. HSMBA
will continue to lobby Council to open
up routes from as many suburbs as
Australia’sToughest
Cycle Challenge?
Fitz’s Challenge is on again -
Sunday 31 October 2010. Canberra’s
biggest and best known long-distance
one-day participation event offers you
the choice of four fantastic challenges:
It is not for the faint-hearted and
includes some of the toughest climbs in
the Canberra region.
Test your skills, fitness and endurance
by taking on the Brindabella Ranges
in one of 4 challenges. 2010 will be its
23nd year.
This challenge is still unique in its
combination of terrain, distance and
weather!
Four Challenges to Test You
If you are looking for a physical
challenge to push yourself and test your
capabilities, the Fitz’s Challenge is for
you. Dare to cycle above your limits and
achieve your personal goals. There are
four challenges to suit different levels of
experience and interest:
1. FITZ’S EPIC 207 km, a hill grinding
odyssey
2. FITZ’S CLASSIC 165 km, a
daunting challenge with plenty of
climbing
possible to the trail network.
“Council understand that mountain
biking is hugely popular in Sydney.
Two years ago they would only have
considered it a fringe sport. So thanks
to all those individuals and also to the
schools that took the time to write to
Council lifting the profile of our sport.”
said Campbell.
3. THARWA 105 km, this one will
sneak up on the complacent
4. TIDBINBILLA 50 km, designed
specifically to challenge newcomers
These rides are not races or time
trials. They are non-competitive long
distance tours by bicycle, called
‘randonnees’ where you ride at your
own pace to finish within the time limit.
Rides are open to all reasonably fit
riders.
Fitz’s Epic 207 km has Audax brevet
status and is a qualifying ride for those
wishing to enter the Audax Alpine
Classic ACE 250 km (held at Bright Vic.
in January).
easier than many people might think. For
trips of less than 10 km, riding a bike will
often get you to work cheaper and faster
and will keep you healthy. Better still it’s
a zero emission transport option.”
“If you haven’t yet got the confidence
to ride a bike to work, sign up for a
free City of Sydney Cycling Confidence
course so you can join us on October
13,” Ms Moore said.
The courses are run every Saturday
and Sunday at Sydney Park to teach
safe and responsible cycling to an ever
increasing number of enthusiasts.
More than 550 people have done
the course since June 2009. Seventy per
cent of participants are female and eight
percent are aged over 55, with the oldest
participant, so far, aged 83.
Nearly a quarter of participants
drove a car to work before taking the
you on your bike and giving something
back to the environment.
Krista Bernard has an indomitable
cycling history. In Australia, she
traversed the Nullabor and Central
Deserts on dirt tracks, has ridden the
entire length of the east coast, and
cycled around Tasmania. Pedaling
15,000km across 19 countries – from
Indonesia to Egypt – won her the
prestigious ‘Young Adventurer of the
Year Award’ in 2000 by the Australian
Geographic Society. Krista and her
partner, Daniel Coward recently
returned from an 8,811 kilometre
fundraising expedition from London
to the Himalayas that was inspired
by Krista’s first world cycle and their
“The popularity of these courses
shows that people are keen to get
around the City by bike because it’s an
efficient alternative transport option,” Ms
Moore said.
More than 150,000 Australian
workers are expected to hop on their
bikes for the annual Ride to Work Day.
The City will hand out refreshments
at two sites covering the eastern and
western flanks of the city; Hyde Park
South and Union Street Pyrmont.
City of Sydney Cycling Ambassadors
Nell Schofield and Ian Roberts will be
on hand to give tips to new riders.
The breakfasts are a small way to
Bikes to get the kids &
shopping around
A new bike library in Newtown,
the first of its kind in Australia, will
loan Cargo bikes and bike trailers for
transporting bulky items or beloved
children. The library was opened
recently by Lord Mayor Clover Moore
MP.
“We are offering an affordable,
convenient, healthy and environmentally
friendly alternative to running errands in
cars. This unique library will encourage
more people to use bikes to get around
their local area,” said Ms Moore.
The Watershed Bike Library builds on
the growing popularity of commuter and
recreational bike riding in inner Sydney.
Sam Iskander, Mayor of Marrickville
said: “This is an innovative concept
that encourages the local community
to relinquish the car and borrow a
specialised cargo bicycle or trailer for up
to three days instead.”
“The Bike Library will expand the
imaginations of local residents on what is
possible to achieve by bicycle.”
The fleet consists of specialist cargo
bikes and trailers to allow cyclists to
carry equipment and objects that might
otherwise require a car; from shopping to
household items and more.
The Watershed*, in partnership with
Bike Sydney, will run the Bike Library for
a 12 month trial period. It consists of two
cargo bikes and a number of specialist
trailers.
Anyone can become a member for a
small fee, items are available for up to
three days loan, and the first three hours
are free.
Borrowers can use the City of Sydney
cycling map to plan their route, explore
local back streets, and avoid roads with
heavy traffic.
*The Watershed is a green living centre
at 218 King Street Newtown, jointly
managed by Marrickville and City of
Sydney Councils.
life’s better on a bike
Memorable Cycling in Beautiful Sulawesi
Lesley Hale
Around May 2009, an email
from a friend of a friend appeared
in my mailbox suggesting I might
be interested in the supported rides
described at the www.cycleindonesia.
com.au website.
Having traveled in Bali about 20 years
ago, revisiting Indonesia was not on
my agenda, but this attractive and userfriendly
website kindled a latent curiosity
about our large northerly neighbor and
reminded me of a cycling trip I enjoyed
in Thailand a few years ago. Contact
with Colin Freestone from Sydney (Mr
Cycle Indonesia) about the format of
his recent and proposed trips further
stimulated my interest and left me
relaxed about the style of his operation.
When I realized that my diary could
not fit the timetable for his August 2009
coastal cycling trip with snorkeling
and yoga elements, Colin mentioned
the trip he was planning to Toraja in
February 2010 and kept in touch via
individualized email. His personal
engagement helps potential group
members determine whether it is the
right trip for them (and vice versa),
then get to know him, and proceed to
commitment.
At this time I learned that
bushwalking friends who spent a month
backpacking in the Torajan Highlands
in the 1970s, had really loved the area
and its people. So in late October, after
my train journey along the Silk Route,
I resumed an enthusiastic dialogue
with Colin, aware that I really needed
to get on my bike (literally!) to finalize
arrangements.
About the bike:
That was the major challenge for me
as a solo (and senior female) traveler
because I knew I could not manage the
boxed bike and luggage through airports
here and there, especially as I would
need overnight stays for connecting
flights. It was too late for Colin to
arrange a purchase/resale deal for me in
Indonesia, and rentals are not an option
there.
Colin put me in touch with a
Melbourne couple who had signed on
for the trip but they were not concerned
about bike boxes because they were
serious bike-tourers who had been
cycling independently overseas for years
using fold-up bikes, with panniers.
Then the light came on for me: a
good fold-up bike is a real touring bike,
not a commuter toy, and might enable
a keen (but aging) traveler like me to
join far away cycle tours in the future.
I also learned that the Bike Friday (BF)
logo reproduced at Colin’s website
represented more than a bike club;
it is a very reputable US company
manufacturing collapsible bike models
for every occasion - and Colin was
expecting Xmas delivery of his third
Friday to take him to Toraja.
Next day I was discussing my
requirements and measurements
(including the cog count) with Colin’s BF
contact Peter Berra, in Oregon and the
12
result was a Bike Friday Pocket Crusoe
(assembled to match the gearing and
riding position of my recent flat-bar road
bike), delivered mid-January in its own
wheeled suitcase with a video on “what
to do next“.
That gave me ten days for
familiarization and testing, and
confidence building. I was most
impressed with its performance (despite
those tiny 20” diameter wheels) but
rather nervous about mine, given the
expectation of 300km on the first three
days with average daily ascents of 900m
in the tropics - but I did it with the help
of my physio’s training strategy.
Now for the trip:
I flew Garuda (which allows 15kg
extra free luggage allowance for sporting
equipment) and enjoyed two-night
stopovers in Jakarta on the way there
and Yogyakarta on the way home,
wheeling the bike in its suitcase with
other luggage on my back.
The Australian airport check-in staff
asked me to open the suitcase to prove
it contained a bike (the Indonesians took
my word for it). Colin had prepared the
ground for our first group meeting in
Makassar, the evening before the first
cycle day, by encouraging us during
preparations to provide a photo and
personal profile for a shared website.
On arrival bikes were unpacked/
assembled, checked and adjusted;
riders were briefed on safety, support,
protocols, etc; and our cultural
education commenced over dinner
where we were encouraged to eat the
traditional way - by hand. Colin, an
accredited teacher of English and Bahasa
(and trainee Yoga instructor) has had
a long association with Indonesia and
is still contracted to the Indonesian
Government to place referred students
in overseas education institutions. He is
strongly motivated to share his love of
the country and its people (his wife is
Indonesian-born) with small groups of
fellow cyclists, and in recent years has
developed and tested several itineraries
for Sulawesi.
The final itinerary for this 12-day
trip through rural and remote mountain
villages included 764 km over 8.5 riding
days, plus 1.5 trekking/rafting days, 1
rest day, and a bus day of 150k to finish
it off. (The outward route on the original
plan had to be modified after access to
the east coast was closed by a landslide.
This meant longer days at the start
because the time-frame was constrained
by participants’ linked airline flights.)
Our route was designed to maximize
time in the highlands to experience
the unique culture of the people and
their beautiful landscape. The trip was
truly remarkable, taking us through the
coastal Buginese (Muslim) region to
the forested highlands where Torajan
(Christian and animist) communities
are recognizable by their stunning
architecture: traditional ancestral
houses stand high on wooden piles,
with exterior walls that are incised with
red, black, and yellow detailed wood
carvings, and topped by a layered split
bamboo roof shaped in a sweeping
curved arc.
We had a break mid-way trekking
through forests and steeply terraced
paddy fields to stay in these houses with
a clan at Limbong, and completed the
circuit next day by white-water rafting
down the river (reached after another
two hours trekking), past tall waterfalls.
Our favorite memory from the
trip was the unscheduled visit to an
impressively joyful orphanage where
the children who had been at school
for the morning shift treated us to an
afternoon concert of music and dancing
with their bamboo orchestra . Other
highlights were the massive livestock
market at Rantepao (held every six
days!) where very expensive buffalo and
fattened pigs are on sale for ceremonial
purposes; and a few hours (on our rest
day) as recognized guests at a weeklong
funeral for a 100 year old woman
and her slightly younger brother when
endless processions of traditionally
dressed groups of mourners presented
their buffalo and pig gifts for subsequent
butchering and distribution.
Funerals seem to be a major
economic industry here and while
at Limbong we were invited into the
house next door to pay our respects
to another one hundred year old lady
who had been waiting four months (and
was expected to wait another four) for
her funeral by which time the expected
number of livestock might be pledged/
funded. While in limbo, this “sick
person” waited (preserved by formalin)
in her draped coffin in a traditionally
decorated attic-room where offerings of
food and flowers were presented daily
by the family (three generations of which
were living in the village).
13
life’s better on a bike
The ride was fully supported with
front and rear vehicles, a mechanic, and
all food and (non-alcoholic) drinks. Rest
stops were planned to suit the terrain,
weather, time of day, length of ride, and
condition of the riders, sometimes after
30km, sometimes every 5 km. Colin’s
attitude was “it’s not a race, go at your
own pace, and my aim is to get us all
there”. The leading van-driver would
pull over at each rest stop and flag down
the riders; sometimes riders might have
a quick nap in a bamboo shelter while
water bottles were filled and fruit/cakes
distributed.
As Colin was keen for us to interact
with the local people, he put some effort
into Bahasa language sessions (Counting
101; Greetings 101 and 102; Ordering
food and drinks etc) at early rest stops
and over pre-dinner drinks. When it was
time to get on our bikes again he would
trigger a Bahasa numbering-off around
the group, much to the delight of local
onlookers.
Accommodation in Makassar on
arrival, and several nights in Rantepao
(Toraja’s major town) was four-star,
European style. Elsewhere, it was ‘best
available’ which generally meant an
Indonesian-style guest house with mandi
bathing (see footnote), sometimes as
ensuite, but also included a chief ‘s
house and a rice granary where couples
could still have their own room.
The food was always “village style“,
pre-arranged by Colin, and we loved it.
Breakfast was generally “nasi goreng” or
“chicken porridge”, except in the remote
trekking village where we were amazed
by boiled eggs and bread and jam as
well; lunch would usually be a big bowl
CONTINUED ON P.14

life’s better on a bike
Cycling Sulawesi
CONTINUED FROM P.13
of clear soup with lots of vegetables, and
rice on the side; dinner would comprise
fish or chicken, rice or noodles, and
vegetables. Fruit was available at all
meals and we generally had a huge
bunch of bananas in the front van
(which also carried a case of beer when
necessary).
We had ten riders on the trip: a
retired couple from Ohio on blue Bike
Fridays; a retired couple from Melbourne
on collapsible Birdies; Colin and I on red
Fridays; and four on conventional bikes,
the younger Canberra pair (Scott and
Ms Ibi) generally leading the pack on
their road bikes with two Pauls (Sydney,
Canberra) on hybrids bringing up the
rear.
We remained fit and healthy except
for the youngest/fittest member of the
group who traveled asleep in the sag
wagon for two days with a fever (due
we think to his sampling of the locally
fermented spirits). Then he got back on
his road-bike to complete the 150km
final day with Ibi on a busy highway
undergoing roadwork while the rest of
us traveled in the minibus. But, after
all, as a bike racer (and proprietor of
ONYAbike Tuggeranong Cycles in
Canberra) he was a cut above the rest.
Riding through Indonesian
communities was a delight because
there was no antipathy from other roadtraffic:
we were cheered on by schoolkids
along the roadside and overtaking
motor-bikes and 4WD vehicles whose
passengers sometimes leaned out with
cameras to capture the spectacle of
“not-young westerners using motorless
bikes to climb through their
mountains!”
We saw no vehicle accidents (nor
examples of bodywork damage) as those
at the wheel seem to have their own
code for letting others know who will
have right of way, the shared aim being
to get everyone through painlessly and
efficiently. The roads were described as
sealed, which is true until they become
unsealed by inadequate drainage: water
flooding over paddy fields washes away
the soft under-layer which originally
filled the gaps between the large rocks
positioned as the base.
So in the more remote and hilly areas
we sometimes had to negotiate small
rock-filled craters and a bit of gravel.
There was only one puncture (from
a pinched tube) and one “head-overhandlebars”
from an unseen downhill
bump (with rider back on his bike next
day when the shock from missing skin
had worn off). While cycling happily in
this foreign land, I often found myself
musing about how privileged I felt to be
sharing Colin’s meticulously orchestrated
journey with his charmingly attentive
support crew and a cohesive group of
companions, several of whom had done
“a Colin trip” six months earlier.
Managing a group adventure
like this is a gargantuan task, and
Colin coped with all eventualities
expertly and sensitively. Somehow,
everyone’s preferences seemed to be
accommodated throughout.
Conclusion:
I recommend these trips to anyone
who is willing to cover a possibly
challenging route, in a tropical
environment. Colin is an excellent group
manager who aims to get everyone to
the finish, smiling; and that is how it
unfolded for our group of strong and not
so strong, older and younger riders.
The equator goes through Sulawesi,
so it always hot; but the wet season rains
can make it marginally less hot than the
mid-year dry season. We had minor
showers a couple of times while riding
in February, and one downpour while in
a restaurant at lunchtime; the real rain
seemed to come at the end of each day’s
ride, or overnight.
The South South Sulawesi trip of
525km over 9days in July 2010 is a rerun
of Colin’s 2009 coastal trip, and a bit
easier than Toraja. Several of us from
the Torajan trip are keen to see what the
itinerary looks like for his 2011 Central
Sulawesi trip!
Note: “mandi” is a large cold water
tank, from which you scoop water with
a ladle, or what looks like a plastic
saucepan. Once wet, you soap yourself
down and then rinse off with more water
from the mandi. You certainly do not
climb into the mandi.” The squat toilet
was also flushed by this method which
meant it was always clean.
A Picture Speaks a Thousand Words
BIKESydney is experimenting
with using video to demonstrate,
illustrate, engage and inspire. In early
September we launched the first
BIKESydney video which calls for
feedback on the City of Sydney’s new
shared path markings. It was hosted
on YouTube and released on Facebook,
and the BIKESydney and Sydney Cyclist
websites.
The film was made using a (very)
basic digital camera and edited using
Microsoft Movie Maker (software freely
available on many PCs). It took about 12
hours to produce.
To watch the video and provide
feedback on the trial see
http://bikesydney.org/new10/?p=749
BIKESydney will be making more
videos – we hope future projects
will communicate the joy of riding a
bike and explore issues of relevance
to cyclists. The emphasis will be on
producing videos quickly and inspiring
others to create their own videos.
Perhaps you’ve some experience in
filming or post production – even if it’s
at a amateur hobby level. Perhaps not...
SMART COMMUTING, CASE STUDY #4
Ride2Work @ Novartis
by Brenda Mattick
It was the frustration of sitting
in traffic on his way to work and
“spending 20-25 minutes to get
through the last 400 metres” that led
Mitch Kirkman to search for a better
route – by bike.
He was amazed to discover
Shrimpton’s Creek Cycleway, a shared
user path which follows the creek and
goes right under Epping Road – but is
hidden from the motorists stuck in the
‘car park’ above.
Mitch is manager of process
training and quality with Novartis
Pharmaceuticals in the hi-tech industrial
area of Macquarie Park (north west
Sydney).
With its corporate headquarters
in Switzerland, Novartis has a ‘global
environmental policy’ (new cars must
be hybrids or diesel) and the company
supports access to medicine for poor
people in developing countries for
the treatment of malaria, leprosy and
leukemia, for example.
Already a keen recreational cyclist,
Mitch hadn’t previously considered cycle
commuting until that ‘ah ha’ moment
came while he was stuck in traffic: “this
is crazy!”.
He figured out the best bike route
from his home near Gladesville to the
newly discovered cycleway and was
soon riding to work 2-3 times per week.
He wanted to encourage others to
‘give it a go’ and ran lunchtime cycling
workshops, obtained updated maps and
lobbied management.
Cycling policy & program
Although supportive in principle,
company management wanted more
information about the possible risks
of encouraging cycling commuting,
so Mitch “had to find ways to mitigate
the risks — come up with data around
accident rates, for example”. Fortunately
his managing director at the time was
also a cyclist (who rode with the Pollie
Pedal) and they put together a cycling
policy.
Some of the strategies to allay
corporate concerns about fitness, safety
and route finding included:
The NSW Health Physical Readiness
Questionnaire was adapted for Novartis
staff.
Workshops on bicycle safety checks
and maintenance were run in-house.
The showers were upgraded (for both
cyclists and staff who run or go to the
gym).
A local ‘bike hire guy’ lent bikes to
interested staff and Mitch helped guide
the group to the nearby Shrimpton’s
Creek Cycleway.
“Good corporate responsibility
initiatives and environmental awareness
fits with the cycling program in
Novartis”, said Mitch. To be part of this
program, staff had to keep a log and
cycle at least 20 days per year.
Novartis supports staff who ride to
work by providing the following:
✔ free Bicycle NSW membership
✔ safety equipment up to $500 (eg high
vis gear, good set of high output LEDs,
helmets)
✔ a six-month loan to buy a bike
✔ free yearly bike maintenance
✔ ongoing replacement of safety
equipment.
Ride to work rates
At the program’s peak in 2008 four
staff members (out of around 200 staff
at the Macquarie Park site) were riding
to work at least twice a week. And
Novartis cycle commuters join with
fellow tech park neighbours at Optus’
Ride to Work Day breakfast.
However Novartis ride to work
rates “are at a low ebb at the moment”
due to staff changes, increased family
commitments (including before school
activities) and the lack of safe separated
cycleways.
Signage and cycleway issues
Although Mitch said that “Ryde
council is trying to improve cycle
facilities” and Novartis employees
“come from all over the place”, traffic
congestion is a huge problem. “There’s
gridlock here in peak hours – even with
the new [Macquarie Park] train station.
“Half the traffic causing the problem is
going through rather than to this area.”
There’s a new cycleway along
Epping Road but “not all the dots are
joined”. And although Mitch has noticed
“a huge increase in the number of
cyclists whizzing past on the Shrimpton
Cycleway”, it floods if it rains.
Even when cycle facilities are
available, few people seem to know
they exist. “Cycle paths need to be easy
to find; if they are not visible from the
road they should be clearly signposted.”
Too often Mitch has seen cyclists using
the footpath along the busy main road,
clearly oblivious to the fact that a safe,
16
Mitch Kirkman: cycling commuter and
advocate
separated cycleway is nearby.
“If footpaths can be used this should
be clearly indicated”, he adds. “And for
some people, even a quiet backstreet
isn’t an option, so it would be nice to
have all cycleways off-road.”
Mitch encourages people to join
their local Bicycle User Group, cycle on
weekends and get to know the routes.
“Try driving to the train station to avoid
the worst part of the commute and
“change the single modality mentality”.
Company management in Sydney
initiated a local environmental
committee and Mitch was a founding
member. Now Safe Cycle Commuting is
an HR Policy on the Novartis intranet’s
environment section — and Mitch will
be lobbying for it to get attention: “more
and more people are using a company’s
environmental stance as an important
recruitment strategy.”
life’s BUGS better CONTACTS on a bike
The Bicycle User Groups (BUGs) listed here focus on cycling-related issues in
their area. Many have representatives on local council bicycle committees and
are an excellent source of information on local cycling issues. Most BUGs also
conduct social rides as listed in the Rides Calendar. All BUG representatives are
volunteers and Bicycle NSW acknowledges their assistance and the vital role
they play in our campaigns. BUGs marked * are affiliated with Bicycle NSW.
