Minister inaugurates centre to 

combat drug trafficking in GCC

Secretary-General of the Gulf 

Cooperation Council Dr Abdullatif 

bin Rashid al Zayani inaugurated 

the GCC Drugs Prevention 

Information Centre on Thursday. 

“The inauguration of this centre 

represents an important step that 

epitomises the level of cooperation 

among the GCC states on security 

matters,” Dr Zayani said at the 

event. 

He thanked the Emir His 

Highness Sheikh Hamad bin 

Khalifa al Thani and the government 

of Qatar for hosting the centre. 

MOVE AGAINST DRUG TRAFFICKING 

“Location of this centre in Qatar 

shows the country’s commitment to 

developing cooperation among the 

GCC nations,” he said. 

Zayani also lauded the Minister of 

State for Interior Affairs for the 

efforts invested by the ministry in 

making the centre a success. 

“The centre is now fully ready to 

combat drug trafficking that threatens 

Gulf societies,” he said. 

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, 

the Minister of State for 

Interior Affairs and the secretarygeneral 

toured the centre’s facilities, 

which include an operations 

coordination unit and a state-ofthe-art 

conference room. They also 

perused the centre’s website. 

The GCC Drugs Prevention 

Information Centre represents the 

culmination of the cooperation 

among the GCC states in combating 

drugs, the idea for which was first 

conceived in 2007. In 2010, the

decision was made to establish the 

centre to facilitate exchange of 

information among member-states. 

The centre is intended to coordinate 

the efforts of member-state 

security forces to combat drug trafficking 

and optimise drug prevention 

efforts in the region. 

Such coordinated efforts have 

recently borne fruit when 23 individuals 

trafficking various illegal 

substances in the Gulf region were 

arrested. 

In addition, the centre will train 

members of the local and regional 

security forces in order to better 

equip them for the specialised 

duties of drug prevention. Three 

courses were organised for that 

purpose last year. 

An agreement is also underway 

with the United Nations’ Office on 

Drugs and Crime to provide training 

and technical support to the 

centre is in the offing. 

Besides, a memorandum of 

understanding will be signed 

between the centre and Interpol in a 

step to coordinate drug prevention 

efforts between regional and international 

security forces. 

DIA records 17.4% 

rise in passenger 

traffic in 2012

THE Doha International 

Airport (DIA) recorded 17.4 

percent rise in passenger 

inflow in 2012 compared to 

15.16 percent it witnessed 

in 2011. 

According to a statement 

released by the DIA, the airport 

catered to over 21 million 

passengers in 2012. 

The airport is expecting a 

significant increase this 

year, the release said. 

“The increase came at the 

time Qatar is gearing up to 

open the new Hamad 

International Airport that 

is expected to receive its 

first commercial flight in 

April. The first phase of the 

airport will be open to 12 

commercial airlines. Qatar 

Airways will begin its operations 

in the second half of 

this year. 

Constructions at the new 

airport started eight years 

ago with an estimated cost 

of $15 billion. The new airport 

has the capacity of 28 

million passengers annually. 

The number is expected 

to increase to 50 million 

passengers following the 

completion of other expansion 

projects in 2015. 

Meanwhile, the Doha 

International Airport 

(DIA) has urged passengers 

to avail themselves of 

the online check-in and 

arrive at least three hours 

before their departure 

time as increased queuing 

times are expected at the 

terminals. 

The airport is anticipating 

a rise in passenger traffic 

at the departure terminals 

as schools across the 

country will begin midterm 

holidays from February 10. 

The airport management 

has promised to deploy 

more staff at the departure 

and arrival terminals and 

open more check-in counters 

at the departure 

lounges to reduce queues, 

ensuring that passengers 

continue to enjoy a pleasant 

experience at the airport.

for 2013 awards

Summit for Education 

(WISE) on Thursday 

opened the submission for 

the 2013 awards. 

The WISE Awards seek to 

highlight innovative initiatives 

in education from 

around the world. 

Finalists and winning 

projects of the WISE 

Awards demonstrate both 

real-world solutions to current 

educational challenges 

and serve as examples that 

can potentially be replicated 

in other parts of the world. 

Applicants are urged to 

submit details of their projects 

on the WISE Awards

31. A shortlist of 12 finalists 

will be announced in June, 

after which a jury of international 

education experts will 

choose six winning projects. 

Selected in September, they 

will be showcased at the 

2013 WISE Summit in 

Doha, slated to take place 

from October 29 to 31, 2013. 

Each WISE Awards winning 

project will receive 

$20,000 and benefit from 

global visibility via the 

WISE network: A community 

of more than 9,000 

education experts and practitioners 

from 152 countries. 

The winning teams and 

finalists will thus have an 

opportunity to promote 

their achievements and 

establish new partnerships 

that could lead to the growth 

and replication of projects in 

other educational contexts 

and regions of the world.

Al Hamam gets QR1bn Ashghal project 


DOHA 

THE Public Works 

Authority (Ashghal) has 

announced infrastructural 

projects worth more than 

QR1 billion for Rawdat Al 

Hamam area, says an Al 

Watan report. 

The project including road 

and sanitation networks will 

be implemented by the second 

quarter of this year and 

serve 4,000 housing units in 

the locality. 

It is worth mentioning 

that Ashghal’s total cost over 

local road networks and sanitation 

service projects is set 

to reach QR50 billion. 

Meanwhile, Ashghal is 

negotiating with about 200 

companies to implement its 

projects in five different 

regions: north of Qatar, 

south of Qatar, north of 

Doha, south of Doha and 

west of Doha. 

Currently, tenders are 

being released and companies 

of international repute 

are vying with one another

The projects marked for 

north of Qatar are expected 

to cost QR 6.6 billion whereas 

in south of Qatar it would 

cost around QR5.8 billion. 

In north of Doha, the infrastructural 

projects will cost 

around QR10.2 billion, in 

south QR 14.3 billion and in 

west QR10 billion. 

Besides past infrastructure 

projects, Ashghal is now 

working on many development 

projects in the country 

and maintenance of local 

roads in residential areas 

project is one of them. Many 

specialised construction 

companies are conducting 

studies on the condition of 

roads and preparing reports 

in order to make maintenance 

more effective. 

Four new tenders have 

been set and that include 

conditions and criteria for 

the implementation of the 

road rehabilitation projects, 

which consist of maintaining 

traffic conduct, studying the 

establishment of bypass 

roads and traffic signals, in 

addition to carrying out 

works on sewerage, water, 

electricity and the lighting 

networks. 

Recently, Ashghal implemented 

a highway maintenance 

project, which will 

take around one and a half 

years to finish. 

This project also includes 

maintenance of roads and 

bridges on Salwa 

International Highway, 

Dukhan Highway, Mesaieed 

Road and Wakra Road in 

addition to the smaller roads 

that connect to the highways. 

The project comes within 

the general plan framework 

implemented by Ashghal to 

maintain traffic safety. It has 

been designed by Ashghal in 

close coordination with the 

ministry of interior and the 

ministry of municipal affairs 

and urban planning.

MEMBERS of the ‘Mouth and 

Foot Painting Artists’ (MFPA), 

an India-based organisation, 

demonstrated their unique 

ability to over 2,000 students 

from 18 schools and colleges 

across Qatar at a special workshop 

on Thursday. 

The event was held at the 

Hamad Bin Khalifa University 

(HBKU). It was among a series 

of events organised by HOPE 

Qatar in line with the year’s 

edition of ‘Message of HOPE’, 

an annual event aimed at 

showcasing role models and 

internationally-acclaimed personalities. 

The year’s ambassadors of 

HOPE, M V Ravindran, 

Ganesh Kumar, Manoj 

Bhingare and Manjibhai L 

Ramani, engaged the youngsters 

through a live demonstration 

of their painting skills 

and sharing of their inspiring 

life stories. 

The programme featured an 

art contest in which some of 

the students where challenged 

to create artworks without 

using their hands, an experience 

new to all of the participants.

The artists are lucky that 

they can do this,” said

use of their hands. I tried it

experience of drawing with her 

mouth as an interesting activity. 

“I never thought I could 

paint with my mouth,” said the 

eight-year-old student, who 

also dreams of becoming a 

painter.

Women’s rights spark heated debate

WOMEN’S rights and freedom 

sparked a heated discussion 

during a debate hosted by 

the Cultural Creativity Centre 

recently. 

Conducted by Kholoud al 

Suaidi, a journalist in a local 

newspaper, the debate highlighted 

concerns regarding 

the anticipation for women’s 

freedom. 

Kholoud opened the discussion 

with a support for 

women’s rights. She, however, 

explained that there was no 

absolute freedom. 

“Women’s rights and freedoms 

tend to be a controversial 

topic in our society 

because we do not have a common 

definition of freedom. 

Some people call for freedom 

in the context of western idea 

that does not fit into our society 

while others reject the concept 

of freedom entirely to 

avoid any controversy,” she 

explained. 

“Today, I call for moderate 

course, which fall within our 

social guidelines and do not 

violate women’s rights. 

Women have proven to be 

competent in all aspects of 

society. Thus, they must be 

able to exercise their rights 

and become active members 

of the society,” she said. 

Participants in the event 

outlined the benefits and 

drawbacks associated with 

unconditional freedom. 

For Moza al Eshaq, director 

of the center, the focus of the 

debate should move beyond 

the superficial meaning of 

freedom. 

“I think that at this point in 

time, we should be having a 

debate about the deep meaning 

of freedom. What exactly is 

the meaning of freedom? We 

should be discussing women’s 

intellectual freedom and how 

they can utilise their freedoms 

to help Qatar achieve its 2030 

vision,” she explained. 

The Cultural Creativity 

Centre was established in 

2005. It organises various cultural 

services, including workshops 

and conferences. 

The centre attracts youth 

aged 15 and above with weekly 

symposiums focusing on 

various topics. It also offers 

workshops on short story 

writing, poetry and media 

production, among others.

health’ has attracted over 

13,000 individuals comprising 

60 percent Qataris of all 

ages since its launch six weeks 

ago, and the number is rising 

every single day. 

The initiative, which is 

sponsored 

by 

Commercialbank Qatar, 

RasGas and Qtel, is aimed at 

engaging the people of 

Qatar in a self-managed lifelong 

plan based on a moderate 

amount of daily healthy 

activity.

Kuwari said, “At Aspire Zone, 

we continuously aim to find 

ways in which we can inspire 

members of the Qatari community 

to enhance their fitness 

levels and transition 

smoothly into a healthier 

lifestyle. To do so, we build on 

all our accumulated knowledge,

Commenting on the initiative,

that the impact of increasing 

movement on an individual’s 

health doesn’t manifest until 

they have started walking

Qatar Tennis Federation 

(QTF), for five-day programme 

of wide-ranging 

entertainment and sporting 

activities from February 12. 

The programme will take 

place on Palm Island to 

highlight natural sites in 

Qatar. 

The activities will be supported 

by the Private 

Engineering Office and 

Tennis Academy. 

During the events, the 

Private Engineering Office 

will provide private old sailboat-the 

dhows, which is 

part of the civilisational and 

cultural heritage of the State 

of Qatar. 

Qatar’s National Sports 

Day (NSD), a national holiday 

to celebrate sports of 

every kind, also aims to 

encourage everyone to take 

up sports to reap the health 

benefits of regular exercise. 

QTA’s participation serves 

to highlight Doha’s emergence 

as the region’s sports 

capital and QTA’s bid to 

make sports tourism a key 

part of the sector in Qatar. 

QTA’s Director of 

Tourism Abdullah al Badr 

said: “The significance of 

National Sports Day lies in 

spreading awareness about 

the need to embrace a 

healthy lifestyle through 

sport. At the same time, it 

serves to underline QTA’s 

strategy to promote sports 

tourism in the country.” 

The programme will take 

place on Palm Island and 

include theatre performances 

to keep children entertained, 

alongside clowns 

and face painting, while 

mini tennis courts and 

beach tennis, a first in 

Qatar, will provide the spur 

for them to take part in 

sports on the day.

Zainal said that the programme 

will be from 

February 12 to February 16 

from 10 am to 3 pm, under 

the supervision of QTF 

trainers and workers, to 

offer the best service to the 

participants and to answer 

their queries. 

He added that the Qatar 

Tennis Federation is always 

keen to support and contribute 

to elevate the level of 

sports in Qatar and highlight 

its accomplishments 

internationally. 

“The organisation aims at 

expanding the base of sports 

participation among individuals 

and encourages 

them to exercise, especially 

when it comes to tennis 

which has evolved significantly 

in Qatar. 

“This is very well noticed, 

with Doha hosting international 

tennis players. The 

QTF is organising the 

“Qatar Total Open 2013” at 

Khalifa International 

Tennis and Squash Complex 

from February 11 to 

February 17.” 

22% residents 

changed diets 

after first Sports 

Day event: QSA

A RECENT survey conducted 

by the Qatar Statistics 

Authority has revealed that 

22 percent of the respondents 

have transformed 

their diet after the first 

National Sports Day celebration 

held last year to keep 

them fit. 

The Sports Public Opinion 

Survey further points out 

that after the 1st National 

Sports Day Celebration, 36 

percent made exercises part 

of their daily routine and 42 

percent became much interested 

in getting their body 

into shape. 

The Sports Public Opinion 

Survey was conducted on 

various sports practices in 

the country and reveals the 

number of sports participants 

by age group, how 

much people spend on 

sports, favorite places and 

times to exercise, and the 

number of sports participants 

in the 1st National 

Sports Day held last year. 

According to the survey, 

89.2 percent of the respondents 

participated in one 

form of sport or the other 

and youth between 20 and 

29 years old accounted for 

35 percent. Among these 

Qataris made up for 36 percent 

and non-Qataris 

accounted for 34 percent. 

Of all the sports, walking 

and jogging were the most 

popular practiced sports 

with Qatari practitioners 

leading by 59 percent and 

non-Qataris constituting 

49.3 percent. 

In terms of educational 

status, the majority of sport 

practitioners were Qatari 

and non-Qatari degree holders. 

Qataris with a bachelor’s 

or higher degree constituted 

77 percent of total participants 

in sports with women 

representing 60.5 percent. 

Non-Qataris on the other 

hand accounted for 78.3 percent 

of sports practitioners, 

of which women made up 

for 23.2 percent. 

As to the type of exercise, 

walking and jogging were 

the most popular sports 

practiced by those with a

The survey also found that 

35.2 percent Qataris and 41 

percent non-Qataris spent 

below QR1,000 on sports 

equipments. 

Barwa Bank staff gears up for marathon 


DOHA 

BARWA Bank is supporting 

Ziyad Rahim, its head of 

Market Risk, as he attempts to 

enter into the Guinness Book 

of World Records by completing 

the Marathon Grand Slam 

in the fastest time. 

The Grand Slam entails 

completing a marathon on 

all seven continents of the 

world and the North Pole. 

The current record is 324 

days and Ziyad is planning to 

complete the Grand Slam in 

only 44 days. 

Last year, Ziyad became the 

first Qatari resident to complete 

a marathon on all seven 

continents. In 2012, he also 

completed the 250km 

Marathon Des Sables, considered 

the toughest footrace on 

Earth, while raising awareness 

about Noma disease in West 

Africa. 

The World Record attempt 

will begin in Antarctica on 

February 25 and conclude at 

the geographic North Pole on 

April 9. 

In between the two events, 

Ziyad will participate in Punta 

Arenas marathon in Chile on 

February 28, Cyprus 


DOHA 

SALAM International will 

organise a range of sporting 

activities on February 12. 

The events will include 

table tennis at The Gate shopping 

centre, a bowling competition 

in Gondolania, 

Villaggio and basketball 

games in the Industrial Area. 

Salam staff will also participate 

in the sports walk on the 

Corniche. 

The table tennis event is 

being held in collaboration 

with the Qatar Table Tennis 

Association and Qatar

marathon on March 30 and 

the Dead Sea marathon on

As part of his attempt on the 

record, Ziyad will be raising 

awareness for Care Pakistan, a 

Women’s Sport Committee, 

who have provided Salam 

International with all the 

tables and equipment. Two 

professional players from 

Qatar Women’s Sport 

Committee will also be playing 

a demonstration game to 

kick off the activities.

support the Emiri decree concerning 

Sport Day. The event 

is essential to raise awareness 

about the importance of 

sport, which is of great benefit 

to the physical and mental 

health of everyone. We

part of an overall healthy 

lifestyle. Sport and good 

not-for-profit organisation 

that provides free education 

for the poor in Pakistan. 

Commenting on the challenge, 

Ziyad admits that it will 

be a tough ask to run eight 

marathons in less than eight 

weeks. He thinks travelling 

as well as jet lag to be the 

biggest challenge in attempting 

this record. Due to work 

and family commitments, 

most of his journeys will be 

over the weekend. 

He went on to say, “The flying 

time including transits 

over the eight week period will 

be between 300 to 330 hours. 

My trips to Los Angeles, 

Auckland, Cape Town and 

Cyprus are at the weekend. So, 

I will be flying for 20 hours, 

run a marathon and immediately 

fly another 20 hours to 

get back to the office”. 

The other challenge facing 

the long-distance runner is 

the constant variation in temperatures. 

Some of his races 

will take place in 30 degree C 

while temperatures in 

Antarctica and the North Pole 

can drop to minus 50 degree 

C. The North Pole marathon 

is the only marathon that is 

not run on land but on the 

frozen Arctic Ocean in 

extreme temperatures.
