Teachers hone
debating skill
at TESOL meet
OVER 100 DOCTORS TO TAKE PART

QATAR TESOL, an organisation
that focuses on
teachers who teach English
to non-native English
speakers, recently held its
eighth international conference
at the College of
North Atlantic, in Doha.
The conference with
Learner Motivation,
Involvement, and
Autonomy’, as its main
theme featured a demo
debate titled ‘Visas are necessary
for our country’s
safety’, organised by
QatarDebate, an initiative
of Qatar Foundation.
There were also concurrent
sessions during which
participants chose short
topics to debate. The sessions
were designed to help
teachers and other educators
hone their debating
skills in classrooms either
through formal debates or
by using argumentation
and rebuttal to teach academic
subjects.

of Arabic Programmes,
Kelley Bieringer, head of
English Programmes,
Anna Kerr and Tasniem
Hussain, English Debate
Coaches at QatarDebate
Centre, participated in the
two-day conference.
Kelly Bieringer said that
QatarDebate was proud to
be a part of such an important
academic conference.
“QatarDebate places a
high value on language
skills, so the collaboration
of our organisation is a
perfect fit. Teachers
learned how to bring
debating skills into their
classrooms to help students
become more confident
speakers. Debate
also keeps students interested
in learning.
Hopefully, there will be
more debate- based programmes
in classes around
the region, ”she said.
She said that the conference
organisers were to
hold an event like this
because they see it as a
method to involve the
audience and allow them
to experience a fun and
educational activity that
can be replicated in the
classroom.
“People retain knowledge
by doing something as
opposed to just seeing or
hearing it. Active learning
is what happens when participating
in this type of
debates. Most participants
are used to sitting and listening
at conferences and
not participating directly.
This was an exception as all
the participants got the
opportunity to interact during
the debate,” she added.
Trainers Anna and
Tasneem spoke on the
topic ‘Debate in the
Classroom as an
Extracurricular Activity’
which focused on how
debate, as an extracurricular
activity outside of the
classroom, supports and
strengthens educational
goals within the classroom.
Around 450 teachers from
various subjects attended
the event.

IIA free medical camp on April 20

INDIAN Islamic Association
(IIA) will be organising its
annual free medical camp at
Tariq Bin Ziyad Independent
School for Boys on April 20.
The one-day annual event,
currently in its 11th year, is
being organised in partnership
with the Indian Medical
Association (IMA), Supreme
Council of Health (SCH) and
Hamad Medical Corporation
(HMC) with Qtel as the
event’s main sponsor.
Over 5,000 low-income
expatriates from India,
Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh
and Sri Lanka are expected
to benefit from the event.
Addressing a press conference
on Monday, President
of IIA Abdurahman Ahmad
KT said that a total of 1300
participants have already
registered for free medical
check-ups at the camp.
“In addition, over 100 doctors
and 150 paramedical staffs
from the Indian Medical
Association, Hamad Medical
Corporation and Qatar
Petroleum’s Medical Services
Department will take part in
the programme,” he said.

The medical camp will feature
blood sugar and cholesterol
tests, oral cancer screening,
ultrasound scanning as
well as eye and ECG tests for
participants, in addition to
consultation and counselling.
President of Indian Medical
Association Krishnakumar
said that this year’s programme
would also feature, for
the first time, a back-pain clinic
aimed at taking care of all
back-pain related complaints
of the participants.
“Back pain has been identified
as one of the common
health problem noticeable
among the low-income earners,
due to the nature of their
work, hence the necessity to set
up a clinic to attend to such
issues ” he said.
According to him, health
problems such as ‘cancer
screening’, ‘life style diseases’,
‘organ donation’ and
‘approaches to a healthy heart’,
‘teenage girls – gynaecological
problems’ will be dealt with by
medical experts at the event.
He said that health cards
and medicines will also be distributed
freely to needy
patients while a health exhibition
will be organised on the
sidelines of the camp
Qatar Red Crescent Society,
Qatar Diabetic Association,
Qatar Traffic Department and
Weil Cornell Medical College
will also be participating in the
event alongside a number of
private clinics in the country.
The programme will start
by 9am and is likely to be
attended by diplomats as well
as officials.

Qtel slashes GCC data roaming charges to QR3 per MB

major reduction in the price
of data roaming throughout
the GCC for both Hala and
Shahry customers.
“From today, customers
will be able to use data
throughout the region for just
QR3 per MB, a massive
reduction on the standard
price of QR15 per MB. The
reduced price rate is available
for all customers until May 14
2012,” said a Qtel press
release, on Monday.
According to the release,
the reduction is in response to
