National Police Remembrance Day
appreciation for the police with much
applause.
Assistant Commissioner Carroll took
the salute for the colour party and
contingent as the march terminated
near St John’s Anglican Church. The
church service was well attended by
local dignitaries, politicians, family and
friends, who all reflected on this sombre
occasion. We will remember them.
MAREEBA
A crowd of approximately 100
community members and police
attended the Police Remembrance Day
service held at St Thomas’s Catholic
Church in Mareeba. They came to pay
their respects to the officers who have
lost their lives in the line of duty and
through natural causes.
A key part of the Mareeba District
service is a candle-lighting ceremony
for each fallen officer within the
District. Where possible, family
members light the candles for the
officers.
This year was special because local
police were contacted by a relative
of Sub Inspector Dyas, who was
murdered in 1881. They were able
to attend and light a candle for him
during the ceremony.
This is the first time a relative has
been located for Sub Inspector Dyas,
and it was a very moving moment for
the family.
