Its Official - Dave Batt It’s Official - Dave Batt by Paula Doneman In 2002, the international spotlight once again shone on Bundaberg region with the horrific murder of Caroline Stuttle. “There have been quite a few big internal matters – there were two deaths in custody in the watch-house and another where a motorcyclist who drove off from an RBT was killed. There was also the fatal shooting of the son of (convicted drug trafficker) Alby Rhodes. We were concerned about retribution from his father and so we had the CSIU go to the jail and explain what happened, that his son had pulled a gun on a police officer. We wanted him to get word out to other criminals not to be gunning for police. He (Alby) did not have any issue with the shooting.’’ • Certificate from Derbyshire received during his UK trip In his career as a detective in the sugar cane city of Bundaberg, Dave Batt has investigated crimes on an international scale. First there was the Childers backpacker hostel fire in 2000, in which 15 people burned to death when Robert Long set the Palace ablaze. Then in 2002, the international spotlight once again shone on Bundaberg region with the horrific murder of Caroline Stuttle. The 19-year-old backpacker from Yorkshire was headed for the Great Barrier Reef when she stopped in Bundaberg. Ms Stuttle was robbed and thrown from a bridge. Detective Sergeant Batt and Homicide Detective Senior Sergeant Terry Lawrence, were two of the lead investigators who worked the case for two years. In 2004, her killer, Ian Douglas Previte, was jailed for life. In the year between those investigations, in February 2001, Det-Sgt Batt became a QPUE Branch Secretary when no one else wanted the job. “I have been doing the job since then, doing a lot of interviews and providing advice to members for almost 10 years,’’ Det-Sgt Batt said. Det-Sgt Batt has also been a Peer Support Officer since the late 1990s. He was sworn into the Police Service in 1990 and worked in Gladstone, Woodridge, Upper Mt Gravatt and Southbank when it opened, before eventually returning to his hometown of Bundaberg in 1994. He moved into the CIB a year later. “I basically went back to Bundaberg for family reasons, to spend time with my extended family,’’ he said. “Being a branch official has been a good exercise. The biggest issue is ensuring members know that you are available and to contact you before being interviewed. We are available 24 hours a day. The worst thing is coming into work in the morning at 8am and being told of an incident involving a member that happened at 4am,’’ he said. Its Official - Dave Batt • Visiting Carolines’ Rainbow • AC Certificate for Stuttle took a much-needed break from his 11 years in the CIB, and relieved at the local PCYC where he eventually became the permanent Branch Manager for the next two and a half years. Sgt Batt’s love of sport made the job all the more interesting and he enjoyed the challenge of running a non-profit organisation. “It was a big learning curve and I got even further involved with the community. I was president of a local rugby league club from 1998 to 2004 and in late 2004 was elected on the board for the Across The Waves Sports Club, which has around 15,000 members,’’ he said. • AC Certificate Batt, Williams & Borland have been involved with CHOGM and looking after the Chinese President during his trip to Cairns and Port Douglas. We had two days in London so the Royal Protection Unit gave us a behind-the-scenes tour in Buckingham Palace, and the second day was spent with the PM Protection Team who gave us a personal tour of 10 Downing St,’’ he said. In 2008, Det-Sgt Batt decided to diversify and try his hand at local government politics, winning Division 8 for the Bundaberg • Meeting the Stuttle family Regional Council. After discussions with Assistant Commissioner Graham Rynders, Det-Sgt Batt said he was able to work part-time for the QPS and as a local councillor. “I am back at the Bundaberg Child Protection Investigation Unit looking after ANCOR, the reportable sex offenders, and have also been doing brief management. I still find time to do my union duties as Branch Secretary as well,’’ he said. • Bundy CPIU In 2007, opportunity once again presented itself when Det-Sgt Batt was nominated and selected for a Rotary Exchange to Nottingham in the UK for a month to study policing. While there he visited Ms Stuttle’s parents and the foundation they established in her memory to raise awareness for travellers’ safety. Through his international colleagues in protective duty, Det-Sgt Batt was treated to an inside glimpse of the police details which look after the British Royal family and Prime Minister. “I have been doing Close Personal Protection part-time since 1998 and Queensland Police Union Journal May 2010 23
