Urgent Duty Driving
A/C Lewis has informed me that she
considers urgent duty driving and
pursuits one of the greatest risks
in policing, and therefore she will
be concentrating on ensuring that
the urgent duty driving policy is
stringently followed.
Red light cameras take two
photographs, so the QPS is able to
work out your speed going through a
red light.
Policy requires you to stop at all red
lights. Take care writing your reports.
Remember that the first paragraph is
the disclaimer from the union diary, so
it can’t be used against you in a court
of law.
One officer recently negotiated 24
traffic control lights, including four
with red light cameras, on his way to
a Code 2 disturbance.
To ensure an accurate report is
written, ask to see the photograph.
As for pursuits, more and more
are coming back for investigation,
especially the attempted intercepts
and evade police. Refresh your
memory of the pursuit categories and
what are non-pursuit matters.
Remember you must have your lights
and sirens on for a period of time to
provide evidence of an evade police.
In relation to pursuits, it is my opinion
not to pursue.
The QPS provides you with the
justification for when you can
commence a pursuit and when a
pursuit can continue, but there is no
training to end a pursuit. The majority
of pursuits move too quickly for
stingers. So unless offenders give
up (not likely) or crash, what is your
end game to bring the pursuit to a
satisfactory conclusion?
There is none and you have not been
trained in any. You are not taught the
PITT manoeuvre like American police.
Once the QPS provides an acceptable
end solution to pursuits, I will then
review my position.
Metro South Region
But currently you do not have the
legislative protection against civil and
criminal matters arising from doing
your job to engage in this high-risk
activity.
Remember, if you have any
problems I am a phone call
away.
