QUEENS MAN ARRAIGNED ON CHARGES OF VIOLENTLY ASSAULTING
EX-WIFE ON GRAND CENTRAL PARKWAY
Victim Treated For Broken Leg and Facial Injuries
Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown today announced that a 51-year-old Hollis man
has been arraigned on charges of having violently assaulted his ex-wife on the Grand Central
Parkway as she drove him to work during the morning rush hour earlier this week.
“At a time of day when the Grand Central Parkway is packed with motor vehicle traffic, this
incident could have had a much worse outcome,” said District Attorney Brown. “The defendant’s
alleged actions potentially could have jeopardized the lives of a great many innocent people in
addition to that of his former wife. I commend all those who pulled over to offer assistance and
prevented a greater tragedy from occurring.”
The District Attorney identified the defendant as Ameer Khairullah, 51, of 196-18
McLaughlin Avenue in the Hollis section of Queens. Khairullah was arraigned last night before
Queens Criminal Court Judge Toko Serita on charges of second- and third-degree assault and felony
leaving the scene without reporting. Khairullah, who faces up to seven years in prison if convicted,
was ordered held on $100,000 bond/$50,000 cash bail and to return to court on September 2, 2010.
District Attorney Brown said that, according to the charges, Bebe Khairullah, 44, was driving
a Toyota 4Runner westbound near 172 nd Street on the Grand Central Parkway at approximately 7:25
a.m. on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, when her ex-husband, Ameer Khairullah, who was sitting in
the front passenger seat, stated that his seat was reclined and accused Ms. Khairullah of having had
a sexual encounter with another man in the seat. It is alleged that immediately thereafter the
defendant punched her twice in the face while she was driving.
It is additionally alleged that the defendant then grabbed the steering wheel and moved it
back and forth, causing the vehicle to move erratically from side to side on the parkway. At this
point, according to the charges, Ms. Khairullah attempted to slow the vehicle by pressing the brake
pedal but the defendant allegedly put his foot on the accelerator and pressed it to the floor. With the
vehicle still in motion, Ms. Khairullah opened her driver’s side door and screamed for help with the
defendant allegedly pressing his body against hers. It is alleged that the defendant continued to press
up against Ms. Khairullah when he then jerked the steering wheel in the opposite direction, causing
her to fall onto the roadway and be run over by her own vehicle.
It is further alleged that another westbound driver – New York City Buildings Department
Deputy Commissioner and former New York state trooper Eugene Corcoran – saw the Toyota roll
over Ms. Khairullah’s body and exited his 2009 Ford Escape to render aid. As he did so, the Toyota
allegedly accelerated and collided with his vehicle, which caused the vehicle to strike him and throw
him into a guardrail.
Ms. Khairullah and Mr. Corcoran were transported to a local Queens hospital. Ms.
Khairullah was treated for a broken femur, a laceration to the bridge of her nose, swelling to her nose
and substantial pain. Mr. Corcoran was treated for bruising to his neck, as well as substantial pain
to his body.
The investigation was conducted by detectives assigned to the New York City Police
Department’s 107 th Precinct.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Scott E. Kessler, Bureau Chief
of the District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Bureau, and the overall supervision of Executive
Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Charles A. Testagrossa and Deputy Executive Assistant
District Attorney for Major Crimes Daniel A. Saunders.
It should be noted that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation and that a defendant is
presumed innocent until proven guilty.
