QUEENS MAN ARRAIGNED ON CHARGES OF VIOLENTLY ASSAULTING<br />

EX-WIFE ON GRAND CENTRAL PARKWAY<br />

<strong>Victim</strong> <strong>Treated</strong> <strong>For</strong> <strong>Broken</strong> <strong>Leg</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Facial</strong> <strong>Injuries</strong><br />

<strong>Queens</strong> District Attorney Richard A. Brown today announced that a 51-year-old Hollis man<br />

has been arraigned on charges of having violently assaulted his ex-wife on the Gr<strong>and</strong> Central<br />

Parkway as she drove him to work during the morning rush hour earlier this week.<br />

“At a time of day when the Gr<strong>and</strong> Central Parkway is packed with motor vehicle traffic, this<br />

incident could have had a much worse outcome,” said District Attorney Brown. “The defendant’s<br />

alleged actions potentially could have jeopardized the lives of a great many innocent people in<br />

addition to that of his former wife. I commend all those who pulled over to offer assistance <strong>and</strong><br />

prevented a greater tragedy from occurring.”<br />

The District Attorney identified the defendant as Ameer Khairullah, 51, of 196-18<br />

McLaughlin Avenue in the Hollis section of <strong>Queens</strong>. Khairullah was arraigned last night before<br />

<strong>Queens</strong> Criminal Court Judge Toko Serita on charges of second- <strong>and</strong> third-degree assault <strong>and</strong> felony<br />

leaving the scene without reporting. Khairullah, who faces up to seven years in prison if convicted,<br />

was ordered held on $100,000 bond/$50,000 cash bail <strong>and</strong> to return to court on September 2, 2010.<br />

District Attorney Brown said that, according to the charges, Bebe Khairullah, 44, was driving<br />

a Toyota 4Runner westbound near 172 nd Street on the Gr<strong>and</strong> Central Parkway at approximately 7:25<br />

a.m. on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, when her ex-husb<strong>and</strong>, Ameer Khairullah, who was sitting in<br />

the front passenger seat, stated that his seat was reclined <strong>and</strong> accused Ms. Khairullah of having had<br />

a sexual encounter with another man in the seat. It is alleged that immediately thereafter the<br />

defendant punched her twice in the face while she was driving.<br />

It is additionally alleged that the defendant then grabbed the steering wheel <strong>and</strong> moved it<br />

back <strong>and</strong> forth, causing the vehicle to move erratically from side to side on the parkway. At this<br />

point, according to the charges, Ms. Khairullah attempted to slow the vehicle by pressing the brake<br />

pedal but the defendant allegedly put his foot on the accelerator <strong>and</strong> pressed it to the floor. With the<br />

vehicle still in motion, Ms. Khairullah opened her driver’s side door <strong>and</strong> screamed for help with the<br />

defendant allegedly pressing his body against hers. It is alleged that the defendant continued to press<br />

up against Ms. Khairullah when he then jerked the steering wheel in the opposite direction, causing<br />

her to fall onto the roadway <strong>and</strong> be run over by her own vehicle.<br />

It is further alleged that another westbound driver – New York City Buildings Department<br />

Deputy Commissioner <strong>and</strong> former New York state trooper Eugene Corcoran – saw the Toyota roll<br />

over Ms. Khairullah’s body <strong>and</strong> exited his 2009 <strong>For</strong>d Escape to render aid. As he did so, the Toyota<br />

allegedly accelerated <strong>and</strong> collided with his vehicle, which caused the vehicle to strike him <strong>and</strong> throw<br />

him into a guardrail.<br />

Ms. Khairullah <strong>and</strong> Mr. Corcoran were transported to a local <strong>Queens</strong> hospital. Ms.<br />

Khairullah was treated for a broken femur, a laceration to the bridge of her nose, swelling to her nose<br />

<strong>and</strong> substantial pain. Mr. Corcoran was treated for bruising to his neck, as well as substantial pain<br />

to his body.<br />

The investigation was conducted by detectives assigned to the New York City Police<br />

Department’s 107 th Precinct.<br />

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Scott E. Kessler, Bureau Chief<br />

of the District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Bureau, <strong>and</strong> the overall supervision of Executive<br />

Assistant District Attorney for Major Crimes Charles A. Testagrossa <strong>and</strong> Deputy Executive Assistant<br />

District Attorney for Major Crimes Daniel A. Saunders.<br />

It should be noted that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation <strong>and</strong> that a defendant is<br />

presumed innocent until proven guilty.<br />
