The 2009 RA Squash Calcutta

About the Calcutta:
We are very excited to announce the return of the Calcutta to the RA Squash
Club this year. The Calcutta is a fun tournament where 32 players of various
levels are “sold” to investors at an auction prior to the start of the
tournament.
The rules of squash are modified as outlined below and the 32 players are
assigned handicaps to provide an even playing field for all. The players then
compete in a tournament that runs from Friday, April 24 th to April 26 th to see
who wins the squash component of the event.
The investors compete in an auction held at the RA on Tuesday April 21 st to
buy the players they feel will take best advantage of the handicaps and rule
changes. Once the auction is complete, the investors then become interested
stakeholders in the outcomes of the matches that follow.
A Karakal squash racquet door prize will be given away at the end of the
auction. All participating players and investors are eligible.
Everyone is encouraged to participate in the Calcutta. The event is
guaranteed to produce some very interesting and exciting match-ups – both
at the auction and during the tournament.
10% of the total proceeds raised through the auction will be directed at the
winner’s discretion to a charity of his/her choice or to the RA Squash Club
for future program development. The remaining 90% will be distributed to
owners of the finalists on the main and consolation draws.

modifications, the players and corresponding handicaps follow.

1 (The 2009 RA Squash Calcutta)

Auction Format:
- Held in Canada Room on Tuesday April 21 st . Bar Opens at 7:00 p.m.
- Auction commences at 8:00 p.m. A draw for Karakal racquet to follow.
- 32 players with handicaps are up for auction
- Each player’s name is drawn and sold to the highest bidder
- Bidding is conducted prior to establishment of the position in the draw.
Sequence as Follows:
- player’s name is drawn from hat
- bidding commences (minimum bid $50)
- once the selected player is auctioned off, positioning of player within
draw is drawn from a second hat
- Start over with another player’s name
The auctioneer will inform all participants of the auction rules.
The owner of each player is obligated to sell a minimum of 25% of his/her
share to the purchased player, should they request. This transaction must
occur prior to start of play on Friday April 24 th .
All money to be paid immediately by Cash or Cheque to
the Official Calcutta Treasurer (Bruce Burnet)
Auctioneer:
The auctioneer for the evening will be the honorable Steve Byrne.
Distribution of Prize Money:
10% of the total revenue will be directed by the winner to either of (a) the
RA Squash Club (future programs); or (b) a charity of his/her choice.
The remaining 90% (the “Purse”) will be distributed as follows:

Official Rules for the Calcutta:
- American scoring, first to 11 points. No set points. A point is scored
every rally, whether serving or receiving.
- Matches are best three (3) out of five (5) except as noted below:
- If one player is a + handicap and the other a – handicap then the player
with a + handicap must win only two (2) games and the player with a –
handicap must win three (3) out of five (5).
- If both players have a – handicap, the weaker player starts at zero (0) and
the differential is maintained.
A Referee / Scorekeeper will be on hand for each match.
