Final
v Clifton
v Winchester
v Eton
v Uppingham
Richard Palmer (Hon. Sec. ORGS) and Christopher Clarke (Hon. Sec. Bernard Darwin)
A winning 8 foot putt by Michael Kfouri on the Thursday evening gave Radley a win over
Winchester and set up a successful tie with Eton on Friday morning for a place in the final against
Uppingham. With Uppingham having a strong top pair in Chris Gotla and Chris Flather – there
were mutterings at lunch to “sacrifice” the two Hon. Secretaries (pictured above) at top. We took the
advice of our wise and experienced President, Christopher Ball and went into the final with an
unchanged team. Michael Kfouri had bruised a rib falling at home earlier in the week. He arrived at
the course on Friday unable to play and Radley were very relieved to have Christopher Clarke as a
very able replacement. Christopher, despite having the responsibility of running the tournament,
played superbly in the morning with Richard Palmer. Richard having played 36 holes the day before,
was showing signs of wear and mutterings about “very large whiskies” as he set off to stay with his
sister. Whisky must have amazing reviving qualities.
After a good start by the top pair, Bailey
seriously tested his partners patience with
some poor shots. Putting and chipping was
good. Radley lost the 13 th and 14 th to go back
to 1 up with 4 to play. Seward rose to the
challenge sinking a 10 ft putt at 15 for a birdie
4 – 2 up. He then hit the shot of the year. 16 th
par 3, two tier green, pin at the back 168 yds.
A truly magnificent tee shot from Seward to 6
inches conceded by Uppingham who failed to
hole from 20 feet. Radley had now leveled the
tie, the second pair having lost a tough match.
Ball and Ritchie, 2 up on the 17 th tee.
Uppingham made a wining 4 at 17 th and
Ritchie had a 5 putt on 18 for a 4 and a win.
The putt agonisingly slid past. We have been
here before…………
Radley
Uppingham

Hon. Sec. marches up to final green
Uppingham found the bunker off the 19 th tee and
Radley pulled up just short of the bunker on a tricky
downhill lie. Ball moved the ball just 20 yards to the
down slope at the front of the green from where
Ritchie played a majestic chip. Uppingham putting up
to a similar distance – hole halved. There cannot be a
safer pair of hands than our President Christopher
Ball. 2 nd at Woking a long par 3, up hill and the
ground is damp. Uppingham’s hit their tee shot short
left. Having been short with a 3 wood earlier in the
day, Ball took out his driver. Knowing he might have
too much club – he choked down, teed up one club
length back from the tee box and put Radley in a
winning position 15 ft from the pin. Ritchie rolled his
putt up to allow our President the final word. ( I am
sure he would have been very happy not to have the
final word!) Sir Archie, I hope you were watching.
Floreat Radley.
