Engineering a better society
2012 Annual Soirée and Exhibition
Thursday 24 May 2012
Hosted by Cardiff University
In the presence of HRH The Princess Royal, Royal Fellow
Venue: City Hall, Cardiff

The Royal Academy of Engineering Summer Soirée
Cardiff University is honoured to be hosting the Academy’s 2012 Summer Soirée and Exhibition. We look forward to
welcoming guests to experience Cardiff University’s innovative approach, and celebrate the successes achieved
through partnership with industry.
Engineering a better society
The Cardiff University exhibition will highlight the crucial role of engineers in developing solutions to a diverse range
of environmental, social, health and economic challenges. The exhibition will present examples of the University’s
achievements across three key themes: energy; the environment and healthy living.
Cardiff approaches research as a collaborative and innovative enterprise, involving, amongst others, industrial
partners, research organisations and other Universities. We are delighted that partner Universities Bath, Bristol, Exeter
and Swansea will also feature in the exhibition.

Cardiff School of Engineering
Engineering has been taught at Cardiff since 1893. Today, the Cardiff School of Engineering is a large and vibrant school,
recognised as one of the best engineering schools in the UK for its research, teaching and facilities. Visit our world-leading
facilities and meet some of our engineers working in multidisciplinary research institutes tackling issues which range from
energy to communications and from materials to healthcare.
Morgan-Botti Lightning Laboratory
The Morgan-Botti Lightning Laboratory, with around £1.6 million joint funding by the Welsh Government and EADS Innovation
Works, is the most advanced university-based lightning test facility in the UK. It is able to generate up to 200,000 amps. The
facility complements the expertise within the Cardiff School of Engineering’s High Voltage Energy Systems research group, and
combined with the practical knowledge of EADS, provides a unique research and testing facility for businesses in Wales involved
in composite materials and structures.

Travelling to Cardiff
Cardiff, Europe’s youngest capital, is situated in South Wales and is easy to reach
from anywhere in the UK. Just two hours away from the centre of London by
rail or road and two and a half hours’ drive away from Heathrow, Cardiff is
accessible whether you plan to get here by car, plane or train.
Arriving by car:
Cardiff is right on the national motorway system, with the M4 running through
the north of the city, making London a comfortable drive away.
From the Midlands, the North of England and Scotland it is a straightforward
drive via the M6, M5 and M50/M4. From the South and South West of England
the approach is by M5 and M4. Access from West Wales is by M4. If you enter
Wales via the M4 Second Severn Crossing or the M48 Severn Bridge you will
need to pay a toll. The Severn Crossing toll for cars entering Wales is £6 (please
note that it is not possible to pay by card).
Arriving by air:
Cardiff is served by its own international airport with regular direct flights from
the UK, located 12 miles west of Cardiff city centre, and just 10 miles from
Junction 33.
Arriving by rail:
High-speed InterCity trains link most cities around the country with Cardiff. The
journey time from London Paddington to Cardiff is just over two hours and
trains depart every 30 minutes during the day. You will arrive at Cardiff's Central
Train Station, Wales' busiest train station. The Grade II listed building is in the
centre of Cardiff and is minutes away from the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff's
major shopping areas and hotels.
The Royal Academy
of Engineering
As the UK’s national academy for engineering, we bring together the most successful and talented engineers
from across the engineering sectors for a shared purpose: to advance and promote excellence in engineering. We
provide analysis and policy support to promote the UK’s role as a great place from which to do business. We take
a lead on engineering education and we invest in the UK’s world class research base to underpin innovation. We
work to improve public awareness and understanding of engineering. We are a national academy with a global
outlook and use our international partnerships to ensure that the UK benefits from international networks,
expertise and investment.
The Academy’s work programmes are driven by four strategic challenges, each of which provides a key
contribution to a strong and vibrant engineering sector and to the health and wealth of society.
Drive faster and more balanced economic growth
The strategic challenge is to improve the capacity of UK
entrepreneurs and enterprises to create innovative
products and services, increase wealth and employment
and rebalance the economy in favour of productive
industry.
Foster better education and skills
The strategic challenge is to create a system of
engineering education and training that satisfies
the aspirations of young people while delivering
the high calibre engineers and technicians that
businesses need.
Lead the profession
The strategic challenge is to harness the collective
expertise, energy and capacity of the engineering
profession to enhance the UK’s economic and social
development .
Promote engineering at the heart of society
The strategic challenge is to improve
public understanding of engineering, increase
awareness of how engineering impacts on lives and
increase public recognition for our most talented
engineers.
