I hope all of our members enjoyed the Thanksgiving Holiday. The buffet was
well attended but play on the golf course was light as families spent time
together. The day before Thanksgiving and the day after are usually very
busy days for the golf course. This year was no different as the weather was
perfect for golf.
We have been busy at the club and I’d like to thank Josh and his crew. Adam
Brianne and his staff, Karen, the Langdon
golf shop staff and cart attendants, and the office
staff for all of their work during this holiday period.
The new golf course maintenance equipment should be arriving soon and the new golf carts should arrive
This has been a challenging year for the golf business, especially in Texas with the crazy weather we had. We
are continuing to make improvements to Harbor Lakes to enhance your experience. I’m happy to report that
we had many guests here over the Thanksgiving Holiday that were very impressed with your club and several
TURF TALK
Ch
B1048
Page 3
Looks like 2011 is about to come to an end! It has been a rough year for the golf course. Following what
was one of the worst winters in history, was a summer packed full of heat and almost completely absent
of rain! As you may remember our greens took a pretty big hit from the extremely cold temperatures early
in the year. We had several large areas of winterkill that we have since fully recovered from. Due to the
with the sodium rich waters of Lake Granbury.
Our little
spring.
high temperatures that came early in the summer, this recovery process took a little longer than expected,
but the greens are healthy and in great shape going into fall. For the most part, the rest of the course has
remained in fairly good shape considering the battles we have fought with Mother Nature this year.
Most of you have probably noticed already the work we are doing on hole #14. Our goal is to have all of
the bare spots we have lost resodded and completely playable by spring. Now with the effluent water
available for irrigation purposes, we should start to see an increase in turf quality around the course. The
effluent will also aid in our efforts to maintain healthy turf in areas that have since died due to irrigating
I would like to personally thank you as members for taking such great care of the course while you are
playing. Your help raking sand traps, filling divots, and repairing ball marks goes a long way enabling our
crew to focus on other aspects of course maintenance. I would like to ask for your continued help with
traffic patterns around the golf course. Trying to avoid high traffic areas while driving around the course
will help us in reducing the wear that the course experiences throughout the winter months and into
I would also like to announce the addition of Darren Hazel to our golf course maintenance team. He will
be serving as Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. He has been here for a few weeks now and has been
doing an amazing job. He will be a great asset for Harbor Lakes and I encourage you as members to stop
and meet Darren if you have an opportunity!
As winter draws near many people have asked me why I water the greens immediately before a freeze.
This is because the water will freeze and act as an insulator to the more severe temperatures and wind
that can cause winter desiccation of the grass around the course. So as homeowners, it is just as important
to protect your lawn when there are extreme cold temperatures in the forecast.
As always feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have about the golf course or even your
home lawn!
Josh Thompson
Superintendent

FOOD AND BEVERAGE TABLE Our little
Make your reservations today for New Year’ Eve Masquerade Party ,Bling in the New Year
Hope everyone had a great Turkey Day! I know I sure enjoyed it, just wish I had room for more! Ok, so the new wine list is in place
and has had some great reviews so far. Now we have lots of wines from the old wine list we need to move out. So for the month of
December the club is offering half off the old selections until they are gone. Christmas is right around the corner too! Absolutely
my most enjoyable holiday of the year. The club has plenty of fun activities planned for the month, Breakfast with Santa, Membership
Christmas Party (which is guaranteed to surpass last years), and some great nightly dinner specials! So bring your family and
join us to celebrate! Here is a fun recipe to play with this month. Serve with your family Christmas meal!
Potato Gatto
• 2 1/2 pounds potatoes, scrubbed
• 2 tablespoons plain bread crumbs
• 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, softened
• 2/3 cup warm milk
• 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons freshly grated pecorino Romano or Parmigiano-Reggiano
• 1 large egg, beaten
• 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, cut into 1/2-inch dice
• 4 ounces sliced Genoa or other Italian-style salami and/or prosciutto, chopped
Place the potatoes in a large saucepan with cold water covering them completely. Cover the pan and bring the water to a simmer over
medium-high heat. Cook the potatoes until they are tender when pierced with a knife, about 20 to 30 minutes. Drain them and let them cool
slightly. Generously butter a 2-quart baking dish. Sprinkle the dish with the bread crumbs, turning it to spread the crumbs evenly. When the
potatoes are cool enough to handle, remove the skins. Place the potatoes in a bowl and mash them until smooth. Stir in 3 tablespoons of
the butter, the milk, 1 cup of the grated cheese, the egg, the nutmeg, and salt and pepper to taste. Fold in the mozzarella and meat. Heat
the oven to 400º. Spread the mixture evenly in the dish, dot with the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter, and sprinkle with the remaining 2
tablespoons of grated cheese. (This dish can be prepared to this point and refrigerated for up to 24 hours.) Bake the dish until the top is
browned and the center is hot, 40 to 45 minutes (50 minutes if it was refrigerated). Let it cool for 10 minutes before serving. Serves 10.
Happy Holidays!
See you around the club, Chef Adam

Our little
Well, now that we’ve filled up on turkey and dressing, and loosened
a notch or two in our belts, lo and behold Christmas is right around the
corner! As the golf year wraps up I would like to take this opportunity to
tell everyone about our upcoming Balloon Sale on Tuesday, December
6th from 5:30-7pm. There will be wine and cheese and you can see all
the goodies that we have in the golf shop that are available to you and
yours. If we don’t have what you are looking for feel free to ask and we
can make arrangements to fill all of Santa’s list. Also, I would like to let
everyone know that once we put up our golf shop Christmas tree we will
be taking donations for the Royal Family
Kids Camp to help benefit those less
fortunate than us. So, if you’d like, swing
by and leave something that will
definitely put a smile on a child’s face
this Christmas!
Happy Holidays!!!
