the fair garden blooms
The legendary young adult
librarian Margaret Edwards, in
her 1969 book The Fair Garden
and the Swarm of Beasts, referred
to the library as the “garden” and
said her life was enriched by the
swarm of teenage “beasts” who
used the Pratt Library every day
and the young adult librarians who inspired them to read.
The Library’s commitment to young adults has a long
history. The Office of School and Student Services began
in the 1930s and flourishes today. Last year, it coordinated
a successful campaign to register Baltimore City 9th
graders for library cards. The campaign will continue this
upcoming school year hoping to register more teens.
Miss Edwards’ protégé Sara “Bunny” Siebert maintained
the Pratt’s commitment to young adults. After her
death, Ms. Siebert continued the legacy, with a generous
donation to the Pratt’s Young Adult Services, a part of
which is currently being used to refurbish the Student
Express section of the Central Library and provide free YA
programming at all Pratt locations.
I believe Ms. Siebert and Ms. Edwards would be pleased
with this great legacy. We thank them for a gift that will
allow the Pratt to continue a proud tradition for these
wonderful “beasts.”
Carla D. Hayden Chief Executive Officer
brown lecture series presents
Eugene Robinson, Pulitzer Prize-winning
columnist and author
Tuesday, October 12, 7 p.m.,
Central Library, Wheeler Auditorium
Eugene Robinson won the Pulitzer Prize in 2009 for his
insightful commentary on race, President Obama, and the
2008 election. He has reported for the Washington Post for
over 25 years and writes a twice-weekly column.
In his new book, Disintegration: The Splintering of Black America, Robinson argues
that, over decades of desegregation, affirmative action, and immigration, the concept
of “Black America” has shattered, and America’s agenda for racial progress has fundamentally changed. Now,
instead of one “Black America,” there are four distinct groups: a mainstream middle-class majority; a large
abandoned minority with less hope than ever of escaping poverty; a small transcendent elite with enormous
wealth and power; and newly emergent groups of mixed-race individuals and recent black immigrants who
question what “black” even means.
Leonard T. Miller, president of Miller Racing Group
and author of Racing While Black: How an African-
American Stock Car Team Made Its Mark on NASCAR
Tuesday, October 19, 7 p.m.,
Central Library, Wheeler Auditorium
In the vastly white, Southern world of NASCAR, black drivers
are rare and black-owned teams nearly nonexistent. During
his decade and a half owning and running Miller Racing, Leonard T. Miller made
it his goal to win NASCAR races and create opportunities for black drivers. His new
book, Racing While Black, chronicles the travails of selling marketing plans to skeptics
and scraping by on the thinnest of budgets, as well as the triumphs of speeding to victory
and changing the way racing fans view skin color.
Leonard T. Miller spent 21 years as a commercial airline pilot. He and his father, Leonard W. Miller, own
Miller Racing Group and were the first African-Americans to win a track championship in NASCAR history.
The Brown Lecture Series is supported by a generous gift from Eddie C. and C. Sylvia Brown Family Foundation.
