Ray Kamalay, a pr<strong>of</strong>essional musician for<br />
more than 35 years, traces the development<br />
<strong>of</strong> early American music from its<br />
links to slavery to the early jazz age. This<br />
slide illustrated lecture discusses freedom,<br />
ancient and modern slavery, the Haitian<br />
Revolution, the origin <strong>of</strong> blackface, spirituals,<br />
blues, minstrel shows, ragtime and<br />
jazz. Kamalay will also perform examples<br />
