Although no one knows his name or where he comes from, his heroism makes him a living legend to the people. (Directed by Zhang Yimou, China, 1994, 130 min., color, in Mandarin with English subtitles) Beach Blanket Bingo: A Summer Reading Program for Adults June 12 – August 7 For readers ages 18 years and older Summer reading clubs aren’t just for kids and teens – adults can join the fun this summer with “Beach Blanket Bingo.” Pick up a reading log at any Pratt location and record all the good books you read (or listen to) over the summer. You can even write minireviews for posting on branch blogs! Return your reading log by August 7, and your entry will be included in drawings for fun prizes. G I V I N G @ T H E P R A T T Help Support Pratt’s Summer Learning Opportunities It’s April and Pratt’s Summer Learning Opportunities are just around the corner! Last summer, over 50,000 children and teens, many of whom reside in underserved areas, participated in Pratt Programs. National studies indicate that children from fragile communities are at greater risk than their more affluent counterparts for “summer Did you know? In 2009: • More than 50,000 children and teens participated in Pratt’s Summer Learning Opportunities • 15,200 children and teens, many from underserved areas, registered for the Summer Reading Program • Sixty percent of participants completed the eight book reading requirement slide,” a loss of academic skills that often can not be regained. Pratt’s Summer Learning Opportunities help students continue to learn, so when schools resume children are ready to return with minimal or no “summer slide.” Summer Learning Opportunities include Summer Reading, a branch-based program that provides incentive and theme-based reading activities to encourage children and teens to read at least one book a week during the eight week session. The Library also offers the Summer Reading Program to 70 other non- Library sites, including day camps, faith-based camps, and school and day care centers, to ensure that their young participants have the same opportunities for reading practice as children who attend Pratt Library branch programs. A full range of cultural enrichment activities are also scheduled throughout the Library system. Research indicates that children exposed to live art performances from professional musicians, story tellers and ethnic dancers are likely to engage in these activities on their own. Similarly, these library based programs are likely to lead children and teens to apply for library cards, to check out books, and to use Pratt computers. Summer learning programs at the Pratt cost approximately $60 per child. Because public funding does not support Summer Learning Opportunities, won’t you consider sponsoring a child or teen? To Kill a Mockingbird 50th Anniversary Celebration Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, was published in 1960.
