The Reinhardt Story Continues...
This year we celebrate the tenth year of operation for the Falany Performing Arts Center.
The beautiful building is home to the Eulene Holmes Murray Department of Music, our communication program
and 30+ professional performances which make up the Concert Artist Series, the Georgia Artist Series and the
Entertainment Series. In addition, another series of more than 30 performances are offered each year by our
exceptional student and faculty soloists and ensembles. The Falany Center represents for me the spirit of Reinhardt.
It was envisioned with hope for the future and has been nurtured by unwavering commitment and dedication.
What was once a dream is now a reality. That is truly the Reinhardt story.
Impressive benchmarks have been set.
As we complete our first year as Reinhardt University, we do so with the largest
enrollment and the largest graduating class in our history. We will break ground
this fall for a new residence hall, football stadium and athletic field house, and we
have already begun recruiting athletes for Reinhardt football. Mark your calendars
for our first home game in the fall of 2013.
We offer students an exceptional educational experience.
The foundation of our educational experience is the long held values of faith
that have been central to this institution and always will be. We offer students
challenge and opportunity in a spirit of support and encouragement. No one does
what we do better than us.
We are all excited by our University’s vision of the future.
We have more dreams to make reality. Our exciting future is dependent on the
good works of our faculty and staff and on the prayerful generosity of everyone
who supports what we do for our students and our community.
We need you. We need your support.
Consider today what you can do for Reinhardt and follow through on that
commitment throughout this year and in the years to come.
Thank you for all you do for your Reinhardt University.
School of Arts & Humanities
We have “a fine cadre of teacher-scholars/artists who give
their time and talent to mentor students, often one on
one. Our students are artists and scholar researchers aimed
toward an exciting future we can only begin to imagine.”
Dr. A. Wayne Glowka, Dean
Promoting life-long learning is the main emphasis in the School of Arts & Humanities.
The faculty provides opportunities for students to develop skills in critical analysis,
problem solving, verbal and visual communication and the use of technology for
communication. These skills help students more easily adapt to rapid advances in
knowledge and technology.
An important part of the school’s offerings lies in the arts: In studio art and in
digital art and graphic design, students get a foundation in design theory as they work
in varied media, from drawing and ceramics to digital image manipulation.
Communication students explore the theories of their discipline as they try their
hands at video and audio production. They also explore web design and social media,
which are increasingly important for businesses and organizations.
The English program has recently added a creative writing concentration. Students
develop their talents in poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction and scripts. They give readings
and can publish their work in Sanctuary, Reinhardt’s literary magazine, which
includes excellent student writings, artwork and photographs.
Theatre studies, a new program, includes acting, directing, technical design and
literary analysis. A 24-hour play festival involving Reinhardt students, high school
students and professional theatre directors is being planned. To help the burgeoning
theatre program, a Stage Arts Center is being considered. The projected building
would seat 150 and provide support space for the theatre program. –AWG & LHT
McCamish School of Business
“An appreciation of learning and of
serving others is fostered in the School
as students are prepared for a diverse
business world.”
The McCamish School
of Business has a longstanding
reputation
for preparing students
with the skills needed to
successfully join multinational
corporations,
Dr. Donald D. Wilson, Jr., Interim Dean
manage and/or own a
small business, or pursue advanced degrees right after graduation. The dedicated faculty,
many of whom were previously in the business world themselves, bring years of corporate
experience to complement the knowledge, skills, theories and history taught in
their classes.
Professional preparation is provided in the classroom, as well as through internships
and participation in the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) organization. SIFE
gives students an opportunity to network, build their resumes, participate in competition
and serve their communities. In April 2011, the SIFE team won first place in their
regional competition and went on to compete on the national level.
The School facilitates activities sponsored by the Knox Foundation for Ethics,
which includes an annual ethics panel of local business leaders and an ethics essay
contest for students. The Foundation was established by the late Mr. Peter S. Knox, a
loyal trustee, in support of ethics education in business and other areas at Reinhardt.
The School has a large population of nontraditional students, many of whom take
classes at the University’s North Fulton Center in Alpharetta, Ga., and at extended
sites in Marietta and Cartersville, Ga. In spring 2011, the School graduated its third
Master of Business Administration cohort; a fourth cohort is nearing completion of
the program, and a fifth is underway. Growing in interest, the School’s specialized
programs in organizational management & leadership and public safety management
& leadership have seen more than 200 students graduate. –LHT
Alexa Huston ’11
When she entered RU, Alexa Huston
’11 set her sights on making the
most of her college experience, and
she accomplished everything she set
out to do.
“I wanted to be successful academically,
but I also wanted to be
actively involved on campus,” said
Huston. “I feel like I achieved those
goals by being active in SIFE (Students
in Free Enterprise) and SGA,
representing Reinhardt as Miss Reinhardt
University and maintaining
a 4.0 GPA.”
She says that her experiences at
Reinhardt “gave me what I will need
to be successful in my future career.
I have not only learned the theories
of business practices, but I’ve also
had the opportunity to put these
theories into practice with handson
projects and an internship.”
Three days after graduating,
Huston was hired by Cherokee
County Government in procurement
and risk management after
successfully completing an internship
there in spring 2011. –LHT
School of Mathematics and Sciences
“Individual attention is really a key here. It’s a constant
that runs through all our programs.”
The programs offered by the School of
Mathematics and Sciences differ greatly,
but two constants are individual attention
and the unique learning opportunities
the programs offer.
“In biology, we have students who
are publishing papers in peer-reviewed
journals with their professors,” said Dr.
William J. DeAngelis, dean. “That is a
really big deal for math and science. In
psychology and sociology, we try to get
our students to do research, particularly
if they are interested in graduate school.
That’s a one-on-one thing; that’s what we
specialize in. When we interview faculty,
one thing we look for is a willingness to
work with students, to bring them into
research, and to help students with their
own research.”
This student-centered focus is also reflected
in the design of the new science
building, for which donors are being
sought..“Students need space for research,
and the design reflects this critical
need,” he said.
Programs of Study
A political science major is new for
fall 2011, and specific pre-professional
concentrations like dentistry, medicine
and pharmacy within the biology program
were added in recent years. Students
are no longer marking Reinhardt off their
lists because we don’t offer programs for
future doctors, physical therapists, vets or
researchers, he said.
DeAngelis hopes to start a science
advisory board to help raise awareness
and funds and build job and internship
relationships. He wants to involve people
from off campus who can provide a realworld
perspective.
“In everything we do, we ask, ‘How
can we best prepare our students? How
can we ensure they have the skills they’ll
need to be successful in their field?’” he
said. “We’re pushing our students to succeed,
and they are meeting our expectations.”
Wanted for fall 2011: low brass, male voices for the choir
and string players for the orchestra.
Mark Adams ’06
School of Music
Dr. Dennis K. McIntire,
interim dean of the School
of Music, sounds like a
head football coach outlining
his team’s needs.
With a powerhouse program
already in place, he’s
working to “fill the holes
and build quality.”
Increasing numbers of music majors are being drawn by Reinhardt’s exceptional
programs, faculty and facilities. “Word about the quality of what we’re doing has
gotten out, and the rest of Georgia has become aware,” he said. “This spring we
graduated 17; that’s how many total music majors we had in the fall of 2003.”
With 100 undergraduate and 18 graduate students, the faculty’s expectations are
clear. “Some schools are looking for a diamond that just needs a bit of polish. We
welcome those, but we can also take a diamond in the rough because we’re strong
enough teachers. We’re looking for students with a monster drive in the area of music.
In four years, we know we can shape and polish that ‘stone’ to a high gloss.”
Being a successful music major takes discipline and self motivation, hours of
daily practice, rehearsals for multiple ensembles and a dedication to hard work.
“We want students with a high level of ‘want to’ because without that, they’re not
going to succeed,” McIntire said. “We ask, ‘How good do you want to be?’ We can
provide you with all the instruction in the world and great classes, but how good
you become depends on how much time you are willing to practice.’”
Reinhardt’s music education program offers extensive hands-on learning. Many
students are in schools their first semester. They also gain experience through musical
conventions, workshops, master classes and sessions with renowned composers
and performers who visit Reinhardt.
Though no new programs are on the drawing board, McIntire said the idea of
music theater has been “kicked around because it would marry well” with the vocal
performance major. Right now he is enjoying recruiting for and shaping a successful
program. “We’re getting ready to turn our discipline over to these children, and
we’re kind of picky about who will get it,” he said. — MSW
Dr. Dennis K. McIntire, Interim Dean
Master of Music
(conducting; music education;
Roswell High School’s new band director
learned prioritization and time management
as a Reinhardt music major and
student leader.
He has big shoes to fill, but he knows
he has mentors to call. Associate Professor
of Music Dr. David Gregory was
highly instrumental in Adams’ getting
his first job. “I graduated in December
2006, and within a few weeks, I had a
job. That’s ridiculous. In the middle of
the school year, to get a full-time teaching
job, it was unheard of.”
He credits Dr. Dennis McIntire,
interim dean of the School of Music,
with keeping him at Reinhardt. Adams
thought he would have to transfer after
his sophomore year because Reinhardt
didn’t have a music education program,
“but Dr. McIntire came in and within
one year, he got the music ed program
set up, so I have a lot to thank him for.”
He keeps in close touch with both
men, and they were at Adams’ first middle
school band concert. Gregory also
holds a clinic for Adams’ band each year.
“He does it, and he won’t let me pay him
either,” he said with a big grin. “He says,
‘You were a student of mine. You always
will be. I’m going to do this.’”
Adams returned to Reinhardt this
summer to pursue a Master of Music.
“I was going somewhere else so I could
learn from different professors, but I
realized Reinhardt is a different institution
than when I was here in 2006. Only
two faculty that I’ll take classes from in
my master’s program taught me as an
undergrad. Plus I know the faculty is
phenominal... and it costs less [than the
other school].”
Adams has clear goals. “The band’s
slogan is ‘A passion for excellence,’ and
I’ve seen the excellence, and then I’ve
seen the passion. For me, I want the passion
for excellence. I want them to do
their best and be proud of it... It’s not all
about winning, but isn’t it a little more
fun when you do win,” he said, with another
big grin! — MSW
The School offers several undergraduate
education majors, and students in
these programs go through three stages of
instruction: Stage I – initial PSOE admittance;
Stage II – DATA Block; and Stage
III – Candidate Teaching. For each stage,
students must meet proficiencies to advance
to the next level.
The stages of dvelopment allow students
to discover a passion for teaching.
From Stage I through Stage III, students
have the opportunity to observe, assist,
Explore Military History
at Reinhardt’s Library
Thanks to two generous donations, the Hill Freeman Library
and Spruill Learning Center now has one of the region’s
finest military history collections.
(top) Don Welsey-Brown named his
impressive donation, the Triplett Memorial
Military History Collection, after
his family.
(bottom) Reinhardt’s military history
materials range from the American
Revolution to today.
Want to read first-hand memories from
Civil War veterans? Battle assessments
from the Eastern Front... in German? Or
see a movie blockbuster like Saving Private
Ryan or Dances with Wolves?
Reinhardt’s Triplett Memorial Military
History Collection contains all these, and
much more. Its 5000 books, 300 films,
artwork, maps and memorabilia span from
the American Revolution to today.
The collection began with a large
gift from Don Wesley-Brown of Bartow
County. A 101st Airborne veteran and a
passionate military history buff, he decided
to give his collection to Reinhardt
after a chance drive through Waleska. He
believes his beloved donation has found
the perfect home.
Robert and Mary Poe of Ball Ground,
Ga., expanded the holdings by giving
almost 1100 books that had belonged to
her late brother, Frank James Farkus III.
Farkus fought in WW II in the U.S. Army’s
160th Engineer Combat Battalion,
served under Gen. George Patton and
helped liberate France.
The collection has not yet been completely
valued, but Library Director Michael
Martinez calls it priceless. “I feel
countries are measured by... episodes contained
in their past, especially in wartime,”
he said. “It brings out the best in the population,
the government, and of course,
the warriors. [The Triplett Collection] is a
very rich, vibrant, robust collection... It’s
priceless in scholarship, priceless in value,
and priceless in the depth and quality of
the work.”
Wesley-Brown continues to bring in
more materials. “Just set another shelf
aside for me,” he quipped, “because I’ll be
coming back with more.” — AMM
Meet Reinhardt’s Grad Students
A glimpse of the Reinhardt University graduate students reflects a
determined population with backgrounds and goals as varied as the
degrees they are pursuing...
MBA
Justin Wilson
Class of 2011
Justin Wilson began his career with the
U.S. Army Military Police in 1991. This
experience led him to the Georgia State
University police and, in 1997, to Alpharetta
Public Safety where he is now
homeland security coordinator, criminal
intelligence unit commander, records division
commander and emergency manager
for the city of Alpharetta.
After completing a bachelor’s degree
in organizational leadership from Reinhardt
in 2007, Wilson decided to pursue
an MBA.
While many public safety professionals
choose advanced degrees in public administration,
Wilson decided on the MBA at
Reinhardt: “To truly grow I needed to step
out of my comfort zone and learn more
about the business environment. The Reinhardt
MBA has provided me with the opportunity
to broaden my knowledge... and
to learn valuable real-world lessons from
my classmates and professors.”
After graduation, Wilson hopes to
move into senior management and continue
his career at the municipal or federal
level. After retiring from law enforcement,
he would like to start a consulting company
in the areas of continuity of operations
planning, physical security and disaster
preparedness and recovery. — POC
Cynthia DeFoor
Class of 2012
After 28 years as an independent music
teacher in Florida and Georgia and an extensive
background in accompanying and
collaborative music in both chamber and
orchestral settings, Cynthia DeFoor decided
to pursue a Master of Music in Piano
Pedagogy at Reinhardt.
“I was attracted to the master’s program
at Reinhardt because my undergraduate
degree is a Bachelor of Music in Piano Pedagogy,
“ said DeFoor. “The beautiful Falany
Hall and the extraordinary faculty I would
be working with underscored my decision
to audition.”
DeFoor was appointed staff accompanist
at Young Harris College in 1998 and
adjunct instructor of music in 2000. She
maintains close ties to her discipline as a
member of local, state and national music
teachers’ associations, by teaching students
in a private piano studio and as organist/choirmaster
at St. Claire’s Episcopal
Church in Blairsville, Ga.
DeFoor’s final project in the master’s
program is a lecture/piano recital that she
hopes to continue to perform in the future.
and pedagogy for independent and
higher education applications.” — POC
MAT
B. Lynnette McCann
Class of 2012
With an undergraduate degree in business
administration, Lynnette McCann’s career
has spanned several industries, including
her current role as an office support manager
for an engineering firm. Years ago she
started graduate school, but her plans were
put on hold due to frequent moves for her
husband’s job and her children’s needs.
Volunteering in the classroom peaked
her interest. “With my children in college
and no relocation in sight, now is the time
for me. I looked at numerous programs,
but I just kept coming back to Reinhardt’s
MAT. Everything about it appealed to me;
I could continue working; the tuition was
affordable; it did not require an education
undergraduate degree, and I loved the idea
of being a teacher,” she said.
“The further I get into the MAT program,
the more passionate I become about
teaching and the more confident I am that
I made the right decision. The professors in
the Price School of Education are experienced
teachers, very caring, and really want
their students to succeed,” she added.
She is looking forward to graduation in
April of 2012. “I will be really excited to
have an elementary classroom of my own,”
said McCann. — POC
New Students & Alumni Choose Reinhardt for Graduate Study
New Office of Graduate Studies
Supports Programmatic Growth
(Top) Master of Music student Julia
Barnstead presents a conducting
assignment. MM students attend full-time
during the summer but take only one
evening course for fall and spring terms.
(Bottom) MBA student Donald Wilson
discusses IKEA’s marketing strategies
in a recent class. MBA students attend
class one night a week in the 19-month
program.
Reinhardt is adding graduate programs,
and new students and returning alumni
are important parts of the mix.
“In addition to students new to Reinhardt,
we’re welcoming back alumni like
Jessica Burris Akers ’05 MBA ’11 and
Mark Adams ’06. They know the outstanding
quality of their undergraduate degree,
and they trust Reinhardt to also provide a
high quality graduate degree,” said Associate
Vice President for Graduate Studies
Dr. Margaret M. Morlier. “An elementary
school teacher told me recently that her
school is encouraging everyone to learn
differentiated instruction. She was ahead of
the game because she learned it as an undergraduate
at Reinhardt.”
Morlier, an English professor, is spearheading
the new graduate studies office.
“We help students transition back into college
at the graduate level,” she said. “More
and more students are realizing they need
to go back to school to update their skills
or knowledge, or both, and the Graduate
Studies office is the first point of contact
for all our graduate programs.”
Reinhardt’s five graduate programs include
the Master of Business Administration,
MBA; the Master of Arts in Teaching
for Early Childhood Education, MAT;
the Master of Music in piano pedagogy,
conducting or music education, MM; the
Master of Education in Early Childhood
Education, M.Ed.; and the Master of Education
in Special Education. The last two
degrees have been approved by SACS and
will launch in fall 2012.
Reinhardt’s program growth is based on
predictions that the adult student population
will grow a hundred fold in the next
decade, and that graduate demand will increase
45-65 percent, said Margaret “Peg”
O’Connor, associate vice president for academic
affairs. Grad students already make
up 10 percent of Reinhardt’s population.
Administrators are exploring additional
graduate opportunities in homeland security
and public administration to meet hiring
needs in public safety and health care.
Future programs may also offer more
online options to meet the needs of students
whose locations or schedules cannot
accommodate face to face instruction, like
those in the military or in public safety,
O’Connor said.
MAT Graduates 1st Class
As the 30 proud MAT grads accepted their diplomas, the cheers from the
crowd were a bit different. “We love you, Mama! Way to go, Dad!” With
their families’ support, Reinhardt’s MAT graduates had taken the next step.
Selected to speak at commencement, Karyn Hunt MAT ’11, said, “We
had full, busy lives when something in us told us that we wanted more. We
had the desire to make our lives better for ourselves and our families. We
wanted to change careers or advance in our current ones... Our perseverance
and diligence paid off. We are proud of our amazing accomplishments
and, most importantly, the role models we have become for our families.”
Nancy Carter, PSOE director of graduate studies/assessment, commended
the class. “Their maturity and growth, as well as their deep understanding
of responsive teaching, have validated the purpose of our MAT
program. They have taught us the true meaning of hard work and dedication...
We are confident these MAT graduates will make a difference.”
The program, designed for adult students, includes three semesters (fall/
spring) of courses, and one semester (spring) of full-time student teaching.
Classes are offered at night. –– MSW
Celebrating Our 10th Season
“If the next 10 years are anything like the last, then the success
of student musicians, breadth of performing talent and growth
of patrons and visitors is sure to surpass all expectations!”
With its marble
atrium, exquisite
tunable
350-seat concert hall,
classrooms, faculty studios,
private practice
rooms, and impressive
television and radio
production facilities for
communications students,
the Floyd A. and Fay W. Falany
Performing Arts Center was
a dream come true 10 years ago for many
who had spent years planning for such a
space. On February 16, 2012, the Center
will celebrate its 10th anniversary.
In the past 10 years, the stage has seen
performers from local sensations to awardwinning
regional and national groups.
With the vision of the Falany Performing
Arts Center Advisory Board and local support,
the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
was first brought to the
Center in 2004.
“The Symphony musicians
were so impressed
by the acoustics in the
hall, at intermission they
were asking to perform
in it again,” said Dr.
Ricardo Sanchez, FPAC
director. “They also performed
here in 2005, 2009,
and 2010, and they opened the
2011-’12 season with a concert on
July 22, 2011!”
Concerts are presented annually
by many Georgia groups, including
the Georgia Festival Chorus, the Atlanta
Mandolin Orchestra and the
U.S. Army Ground Forces Symphonic
Band. On the global level, performers
have included young violinist Mayuko
Kamio, winner of the Gold Medal at
the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow;
Phylicia Rashad, Emmy awardwinning
actress and singer;
Celtic Crossroads from
Ireland, and tribute shows
to Patsy Cline and Johnny
Cash.
Over the years, the Center
has received grants from
the Georgia Grassroots Arts
Program, the Georgia Council
for the Arts and the New England
Foundation for the Arts. Its donor base
has increased from 21 — the Charter members listed
on a plaque in the C. Ken White Atrium—to 97
patrons in 2010-’11.
As concert attendance and patron support have
increased, even better recognized talent is being
brought to the Center’s stage. In March 2012, the
Center will present the Vienna Boys Choir. After
opening tickets sales to patrons, the event was sold
out. Sanchez hopes to bring similar talent to the
Center every year as a special Patron’s event.
To establish another source of funding, the
Center will inaugurate and co-sponsor with Northside
Hosptial-Cherokee an annual New Year’s Eve
fund raiser this year at the Conference Center at
The Bluffs in Canton, Ga.
Since 2002, Reinhardt’s School of Music has
grown in size and reputation with 100 majors, a
concert choir, symphony orchestra, wind ensemble,
jazz ensemble and several chamber groups. The
concert series, which grew to 18 programs during
the Center’s first full year of concerts (2003-2004),
now consists of more than 40 concerts and programs
each year.
“If the next 10 years at the
Center are anything like the
last,” said Sanchez, “then the
success of student musicians,
breadth of performing talent
and growth of patrons and
visitors is sure to surpass all
expectations.” – RDS

Ministerial Golf Tournament
The Tourney Welcomed 30 More Players and Nine New Churches
The 18th annual Ministerial Golf Tournament,
played at Big Canoe in Jasper, Ga.,
on May 24, was an enormous success.
The Tourney had 30 more players this
year than last, and welcomed nine churches
which were new to the tournament. More
than $25,000 was raised for scholarships
for students receiving United Methodist
scholarships and for those pursuing a fulltime
career in the ministry.
The foursome of Johnny Conner, Ron
Flowers, Van Williams and Jay Hodges,
representing Northside United Methodist
Church (Atlanta, Ga.), won First Low
Gross, while the First Low Net award went
to Phil Schroeder, Jerry Kopydlowski,
Grady Mosley and E.R. Mitchell, from
Cascade United Methodist Church (Atlanta,
Ga.).
“One of our strongest selling points for
support of the golf outing is that 100 percent
of every dollar raised goes directly to
student scholarships,” said the Rev. Dr. Ron
Flowers, golf tournament chairman and
retired pastor. “People know a good cause
when they see it, and they want to support
it and make a difference in the lives of these
outstanding students.” –LHT
Year in Review
In our first year as a University, we welcomed
1224 students, the largest enrollment to date.
Athletics are a vital aspect of this community.
Reinhardt had 240 scholarship athletes in 16 sports. Our teams were very
successful with men’s basketball and men’s golf finishing second in the conference
tournament, and the women’s softball team was season champ (14-0
conference and 40-11 for season), won the conference championship, ranked
as high as 14th in the nation, and competed in the national tournament (see
p. 37). Interest and excitement are also being generated by the addition of
football, a football field, a field house and a new residence hall. (see p. 36).
Now Offering 46 Programs
SACS has approved three new programs:
Bachelor of Science in Political Science, Master of
Education in Early Childhood Education and Master
of Education in Special Education. (see p. 9).
Your “Yes” Will Make a Difference
Please help provide Reinhardt’s margin of excellence
by supporting the Annual Fund... And by saying “yes!”
Shortly you’ll receive a request to give to
Reinhardt’s Annual Fund Campaign. AFC
gifts provide about five percent of our annual
budget, and gifts of cash, stock and
mutual funds provide that extra boost that
makes the Reinhardt experience so unique
and life-changing. When you are asked, I
hope you’ll say “yes”... and then go one step
further. Here are three ways you can say
“yes” that will complement your AFC gift:
Yes - I’ll refer a student!
If you know someone who would
benefit from the unique educational
experience that is Reinhardt, tell him
or her about us. Encourage him/her to
attend an admissions preview day or
tour the campus. Or send the student’s
name and contact information to the
admissions office. We’ll take it from there.
Yes - I’ll attend an event. Choose
from scores of happenings, from Falany
Performing Arts Center performances
and Funk Heritage Center programs,
to athletic events and alumni
gatherings, like Homecoming. See
reinhardt.edu for specifics.
Help Yourself &
Reinhardt University
Through Planned Giving
Learn now prudent planning
can assist Reinhardt students and
boost your current income.
Planned Giving involves strategically handling
your financial matters so gifts to charitable
organizations are tax advantaged. The
current U.S. Tax Code is written to reward
such behaviors, and Director of Development
Bruce Bynum will gladly work with
you as you make these important decisions.
Several of the most popular planned giving
vehicles include:
your will,
charitable gift annuities, and
charitable remainder trusts.
Depending on your personal circumstances,
one or more of these may help
achieve your goals. These vehicles can be
designed to help you now or through your
estate plan. The best way to know what
to give, when to give, and how to give is
through well researched planning. The
results can be beyond what you thought
possible. They can be crafted to help you,
a surviving spouse, children, other family
members and/or your heirs.
Effective planned giving vehicles are
designed to benefit both the donor and
Reinhardt. One recent example involves a
Reinhardt friend I’ll call Pat. She had a sizeable
asset that had a great deal of long-term
capital gain in it and generated 0-2% income
annually. Pat needed the income and
would welcome a bit more, but she wanted
to eventually help Reinhardt students.
We met to explore asset reallocation,
and I learned Pat wanted to avoid the sizable
capital gains tax that would be due on
the asset’s sale. By working closely, we were
able to design a special agreement that eliminated
the capital gains tax due upon the sale
of the asset, increased her current income to
5%, gave her a sizable current income tax
charitable deduction, reduced her possible
future estate taxes, and eventually will leave
an impressive gift for the University. Pat was
more than pleased with the arrangement.
To explore a planned giving agreement
that will meet your goals and needs and
assist Reinhardt University, please contact
Ann Bailey MBA ’10
“People who want to start a business need to go
through the Reinhardt MBA Program - in 18 months
you are immersed in every aspect of how to run your
own business.”
It doesn’t take long in talking with Ann Bailey to realize that she was destined
to be an artist. Her mother is a watercolor artist, her father is a woodworker and
furniture builder, and her husband is a photographer who also produces handmade
books and woodblock prints.
Bailey has an extraordinary talent for calligraphy, but she doesn’t just write fancy
words. She starts with unique papers she has been given or collected from all over
the world and creates a mat based on a certain look or color theme. Next she chooses
words or phrases from one of the many books she has read or collected in her home
library. The end result is a beautiful work of inspirational art.
A project manager for Wallace, a training tax credit company, Bailey was a member
of Reinhardt’s second MBA class. She is working on her doctorate with Regent
University and one day hopes to teach on the university level.
MBA students at Reinhardt base their assignments on a fictitious or real business
they are interested in, and Bailey based her assignments on an art gallery she planned
to open. She created a business plan that required no lease (the gallery is in the lower
level of their home) and no paid employees (she and her husband work there after
their full-time jobs).
On May 1, 2010, the same day Ann received her MBA, she invited her classmates
and MBA professors to the official opening of “Ann Art Gallery”. As they walked in,
they said, “This is real; you really were basing your plan on a real business!”
So if you are traveling near Canton between 2 and 6 p.m. on a Sunday, set your
GPS to 1643 Upper Burris Road and take a short detour to check out Ann’s beautiful
calligraphy art. Or make an appointment. It’s well worth the trip! — JWM
Driving Toward a Championship in Men’s Golf
The men’s golf team finished 30th in the nation and fell just short of a return trip to the
NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships, but it was well represented by First Team
All-American Zach Lindsey, who qualified for the tournament after receiving one of just
two individual at-large bids. A sophomore, Lindsey has twice earned All-AAC recognition.
He was one of 11 individual players chosen to compete at the NAIA nationals. Lindsey
ended with a 72.48 scoring average, the fourth best in the country at the NAIA level. He
was Reinhardt’s first golfer to receive All-American recognition from the NAIA. — SPR
Men’s Soccer Have Solid Start
The 2010 men’s soccer squad, under head coach Dan Farnham, got off to a solid 3-0-1 start but won just
three of its last 12 regular season contests. The Eagles finished 1-6 in the conference for seventh place and
headed to the AAC Tournament at 6-8-2 overall. In the championship game, with the winner receiving
the conference’s automatic bid to the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship event, the Eagles had
their late-season run come to an end with a 1-0 overtime loss to Bryan College. — SPR
4-7 Overall Record for 2011; player recruitment continues.
Emily Collins, (left), a sophomore from Snellville,
Ga., is a team leader. The first women’s lacrosse
player to sign with Reinhardt, she had an
exceptional season and was a First Team All-
National Women’s Lacrosse League selection.
With head coach Alyson Whitley, Reinhardt
concluded its first season of intercollegiate
competition in women’s lacrosse
with a 4-7 overall record in 2011.
In the first women’s lacrosse game in
the University’s history, the Lady Eagles
recorded a decisive 17-4 win at home over
Davenport University on Feb. 20. After
defeating Robert Morris University from
Illinois by the score of 20-3 in a National
Women’s Lacrosse League contest on
March 6, Reinhardt stood at 3-2 on the
year. Injuries and the lack of depth, however,
led to the Lady Eagles losing five of
their last six games.
Reinhardt was led by freshman Emily
Collins, a midfielder from Snellville,
Ga. Collins, a First Team All-NWLL performer,
paced the team in goals (49), assists
(nine), points (58), shots (88), ground balls
(77) and draw controls (23).
team all-league selection. Earning spots on
the NWLL honorable mention list were senior
Jaybriel Guyton, and freshmen Ashley
Davis, Ciara Hilburn and Anna Solomon.
Whitley is busy recruiting players for
the 2012 campaign, which starts in February.
She hopes to increase the number of
players and is planning for an even more
successful second year. – SPR
RU Football Kicks Off
The Reinhardt Board of Trustees approved
the addition of football on March 18,
2011. Bill Popp, director of athletics (from
left); William G. Hasty, Jr. ’67, Trustee
chair; and Dr. J. Thomas Isherwood, president,
helped announce the decision.
With a 20,000 square foot field house planned, more than 100
football recruits expected in the next two years, and Coach Dr.
Danny Cronic at the helm, RU Football is headed to the gridiron in
September 2013.
36
On March 18, the Reinhardt Board of
Trustees voted to approve football as an intercollegiate
sport at the University. Football
became the 17th sports program in
which Reinhardt offers scholarships.
“The decision by the Board of Trustees
to bring intercollegiate football to Reinhardt
is a challenging and exciting adventure,”
President Dr. J. Thomas Isherwood
said. “We will begin recruiting football
student-athletes, and we will have our first
game in September 2013. Saturday afternoons
will never be the same in Waleska!”
After the initial decision was made, the
next step was to hire a head football coach
to lead the program. A search committee
of students, faculty and staff carefully reviewed
a number of applications before Dr.
Danny Cronic was named as the Eagles’
first head football coach on May 19.
Cronic, who officially began his new
position at Reinhardt on July 1, is a member
of the Coweta County and Cherokee
County Halls of Fame. He brings 36 years
of football coaching experience, including
30 as a head coach, to the University’s
brand new program.
“I feel honored… it’s like a dream come
true,” Cronic said. “I feel like there’s some
spiritual involvement. I love to put together
a team. I enjoy mentoring young men,
especially those who have the same belief
system that I do.”
As a high school head coach, Cronic
put together a record of 223-113. He
comes to Reinhardt from The Heritage
School in Newnan after a long and successful
stint as the head coach at East Coweta
High School. In 18 seasons at East Coweta,
Cronic posted a 148-60 record with
16 state playoff berths. He also served as
the head coach at Forsyth County High
School, LaGrange High School and nearby
Cherokee High School.
Cronic has collegiate coaching experience
as an assistant at West Georgia College
(now the University of West Georgia)
and Middle Tennessee State University. He
was a walk-on player at The University of
Georgia with head coach Vince Dooley’s
first team and went on to earn his bachelor’s,
master’s and specialist degrees in education.
He received a doctorate in physical
education from Middle Tennessee State.
Cronic has hit the ground running and
has hired asssitant coaches Rusty Wright as
defensive coordinator and Will Heath as
the receivers’ coach.
Planning is moving forward on an
athletic field house of 20,000 square feet
“I feel honored... it’s like a dream come true. I enjoy
mentoring young men, especially those who have the
same belief system I do.”
Dr. Danny Cronic, head football coach
that includes offices, locker rooms, a large
weight room, an athletic training area,
meeting and storage space, public restrooms
and a concession stand for football,
men’s and women’s soccer, baseball and
softball. Ground should be broken on the
project in early fall, and it will be complete
by spring 2012. – SPR

Crawford was chosen as the AAC Coach
of the Year for the second season in a row
while sophomore pitcher Maddie Monroe
was again selected as the AAC Pitcher of
the Year after winning the same honor as
a freshman. Other All-AAC performers
included junior catcher Ashley Kennedy,
senior infielder Cali Lovett, junior utility
player Nikki Roddy, junior outfielder
Andrea Thibaudeau and junior infielder
outfielder Bailey Arnaud, senior catcher/
third baseman Morgan Basone, sophomore
