2.1.3.6 .FERTILITY IN CF
Most female CF patients have no difficulties to become pregnant. Parenthood
with CF, however, implicates other serious problems.
Due to the growing life expectancy “parenthood” has become an issue for many CF
patients, even though “having a child” involves a number of problems not only for the
mother during pregnancy and birth, but also for both parents afterwards because of
the possibly short life span. 95% of all male CF patients are infertile due to a
verifiable obstructive azoospermia or bilaterally lacking vas deferens. 27 .
Nevertheless it is possible to re-establish fertility by means of surgical intervention. 28 .
Female CF patients usually do not have any problems to become pregnant.
Dependent on the health status of the mother the perinatal mortality ranges around
35%. 29 .
“Many pregnancies are completed surprisingly well and without major consequences
despite a reduced pulmonary function.” 30
