Gifted Education Overview
Revere Local School District has realigned
district services to follow the State of Ohio
guidelines to identify potentially gifted students.
Ohio law does not mandate services for gifted
students. Each school district must determine
what services will be provided as well as the
criteria that a student must meet in order to
qualify for such services.
Identification of Gifted Students
“Gifted” means students who perform or
show potential for performing at
remarkably high levels of accomplishment
when compared to others of their age,
experience, or environment.
Superior Cognitive Identification
A child shall be identified as exhibiting “superior
cognitive ability” in grades K - 1 with a score of
128 or above and in grades 2 - 8 with a 129 or
above on the CogAT ability test or a standardized
test of intelligence within the last 24 months.
Specific Academic Identification
A child shall be identified as exhibiting “specific
academic ability” if the child performs at or above
the ninety-fifth percentile on a nationally-normed
achievement test within the last 24 months.
Creative Thinking Ability
A child shall be identified as exhibiting “creative
thinking ability” if the child scored a 115 on an
ability or intelligence test and a sufficient score on
an ODE-approved checklist.
Visual and Performing Arts
A child shall be identified as exhibiting “visual
or performing arts ability” by demonstrating
through a display of work, an audition, or
performance with superior ability and a
sufficient score on an ODE-approved checklist.
Gifted Services in Revere
Grades K - 1
In grades K-1, identified gifted students and high-ability
learners will be cluster-grouped in classrooms and
receive differentiated instruction from their classroom
teachers with support from the Gifted Specialist.
Grades 2 - 5
In grades 2 - 5, identified gifted students who meet
the “District Criteria for Direct Services” will receive
direct services in reading /language arts and mathematics
from the Gifted Specialist on a regular basis.
Also, in grades 2 - 5, identified gifted students who
do not meet the District Criteria for Direct Services
will be cluster-grouped and will receive differentiated
instruction from their classroom teacher, with support
from the Gifted Specialist.
Grades 6 - 8
In grades 6 - 8, identified gifted students who meet
district criteria for direct services will be eligible to
participate in Gifted Enrichment Options (GEO) during
their study period.
Also, in grades 6 - 8, honors classes in reading, language
arts and mathematics are also offered to students who
meet criteria designated by the middle school. An
accelerated math sequence is also offered to qualified
students.
Grades 9 - 12

participate in challenging coursework and extracurricular
activities. Please see the high school course
catalog and the guidance department for details.

Reading Services
Grades 2-5 Criteria for Direct Services with GIS
CogAT/Ability Composite score of 129-131
plus a 95% ITBS Reading score
CogAT/Ability Composite score of 132 and above
plus a 90% ITBS Reading score
Math Services
Grades 2-5 Criteria for Direct Services with GIS
CogAT/Ability Composite score of 129-131
plus a 95% ITBS Math score
plus a minimum 85% ITBS Reading score
or
CogAT/Ability Composite score of 132 and above
plus a 90% ITBS Math score
plus a minimum 85% ITBS Reading score
Revere Middle School Criteria
CogAT/Ability Composite score of 129 and above
for GEO (Gifted Enrichment Options)
