IN RECOGNITION
2001 SE Tibet and NW Yunnan Expedition -- please donate.
Steve Hootman of the RSF writes: "I am leading a group into new areas of SE Tibet and NW Yunnan this October. We should find
well over 100 species. Would the ARS be interested in buying a large seed subscription for next year's seed list. It should be a good
haul as I was in the same area just this past spring and found many good things and sites."
The Seed Exchange believes that subscribing to seed collecting expeditions is the best way to improve upon what is now under
cultivation.
Please help out and become a donor. The Exchange is operating with very limited funds and we would like to purchase a subscription
to Steve Hootman's expedition.
Further on in the catalog we state: "If you donate a minimum of $20.00 to go to our next partially funded expedition you will become
a contributor to the exchange for the year in which your donation is put to that end. In so doing you will now have all the benefits due
any contributor." For "expedition sponsorship", donations of $40.00 and greater, we will grant contributor status for both the year in
which your donation is put to that end and the following year.

The seed exchange's most eminent list. Freely, they have chosen to share their good work with all ARS members. We thank them for
this gift rich in promise.
PLEASE NOTE
1. CONTRIBUTORS - your orders will be filled first. Please, if using Email: for subject type "Contributor order"; if using post
indicate "Contributor" on the envelope. Doing so will allow us to easily create a fair distribution "pool" balancing the Email with mail
from Asia, Europe, down under, west and east coasts, etc....
2. For the initial distribution, which ends on April 30, 2001, ONLY members of the American Rhododendron Society may order from
this catalog.
3. ANYONE may order from this catalog beginning May 1, 2001.
4. All distribution will END June 20, 2001.
5. Check back at our web sites as we may have late arriving seed listed and a "closeout special" offer:
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/rhodo/ARS_SEED/
http://www.rhododendron.dk/ARS_seed_2001.html
http://www.rhododendron.org/seedexchange.htm
At the close of all distribution, excellent seed usually is left over. We will offer this seed on the web at $1.00 per packet. We hope to
have our on line lists modified to reflect only the seed batches that remain available.
We recognize that many members do not have on line access (in the USA free access to the Internet is available through the public
library system; worldwide, we would expect to find similar free service). The seed exchange can only work the "closeout special" sale
on the Internet. Any member who fails to obtain access to the Internet and is willing to order "blind" may request a minimum number
of 20 packets (all 20 can be all of one lot number i.e.: 20 pkts. of lot#6) plus $3.00 added for postage and other expenses, beginning
June 21, 2001. (Exception, contributors may order any amount of packets and if this is less than 20, postage and other expenses is
$2.00)
Payment must accompany your order. No refunds will be sent, we will make substitutions for seed requested that's sold out.
This "special closeout" will end on September 20, 2001. You will expedite distribution if you include a self-addressed mailing label
with your order.
6. This catalog will appear on the web prior to its printed edition; however, distribution will begin only after we've received orders
from the furthest regions and from those who only have access to regular mail service. Typically, in the past, this has been in mid-
February. Please submit your order as soon as possible; many lot numbers are in short supply.
TO PLACE YOUR ORDER
1. Please use the order blank provided. Fill out this form in numeric order of seed lot number.
2. You may select one packet of as many seed lots as you desire. Quantity of seed per packet is a function of the quantity of seed
available.
3. Please use the space provided on the order form to list alternatives to your first choice selections. Also please, check the box to
indicate if the distribution team may make additional substitutions to fill your order.
4. Pay with check in US dollars on deposit in the United States. No cash please. We are seeking to eliminate the need to send refunds.
Therefore, we are asking that you do not fill in the amount of your check; but rather mark across the top of your check " NOT TO
EXCEED $.........". We can then fill in the adjusted amount. Doing otherwise we will either credit your account or we will send a
refund if over $5.00. Please indicate your preference, credit account or refund, on the order form.
Checks should be made out to: ARS Seed Exchange.

5. A.R.S. MEMBER'S ORDERS FROM OUTSIDE THE U.S.A.
Swedish chapter members: if you pay your treasurer, please check "Bill Swedish Chapter" on your order form.
Danish chapter members: if you pay your treasurer, please check "Bill Danish Chapter" on your order form.
Scottish chapter members: you are to SIMULTANEOUSLY SEND YOUR CHAPTER A CHEQUE OR MONEY ORDER OR CASH
FOR THE FULL AMOUNT OF THE SEED YOU HAVE LISTED AT THE SAME TIME AS YOU PASS YOUR SEED LISTING TO
THE A.R.S. SEED EXCHANGE. Any difference in final cost of the seed supplied by the A.R.S. could be refunded to U.K. Members
by the Chapter, or in the case of their Overseas Members be credited to their account.
Please tick the appropriate box on the order form. ALL PAYMENTS TO THE SECRETARY AND TREASURER OF THE
SCOTTISH CHAPTER ARE TO BE IN STERLING AND CHEQUES TO BE AT THE EXCHANGE RATE OF US $1.35 TO THE
NON-CHAPTER A.R.S. MEMBER'S ORDERS FROM OUTSIDE THE USA MAY PAY UPON RECEIPT OF SEED. If payment is by
POSTAL MONEY ORDER please ADD $2.00 to the total cost. (Exception, contributors pay no additional fee.) This is the amount of
the Bank Fee charged the Exchange.
Credit Card Payment. This method may appear complicated; however, a few trial runs in 2000 have shown it works well.
1. You must be a member of the ARS to pay by credit card.
2. The Fax Method, is the only way that we can accept credit cards.
3. There is a $10.00 handling fee for the Fax Method. This fee is automatically added to your bill.
The Fax Method of Payment ($10.00 Handling fee automatically added).
1. In ordering your seeds tell us that you choose to pay via the Fax Method.
2. a). If you ordered seed via Email, we will send you our Fax Form via Email for you to print. The fax number of our executive
director, Dee Daneri, will be on the form. Please fill in all the required information, sign and fax to Dee.
b). If you ordered seed via the traditional post, you will find the fax form in the envelope with your seed. Please complete, sign and
fax to Dee.
6. Cost: all seed lots are $3.50 per packet. Postage and other expenses are $3.00.
7. Mail orders to:
ARS Seed Exchange
PO Box 284
East Quogue, N.Y. 11942-0284
USA
or submit Email orders to: Arsseed@aol.com
8. You will expedite distribution if you include a self-addressed mailing label with your order.

9. Contributors have the benefit of having their requests filled first and thus stand a better chance of obtaining their choice of seed. We
are willing to extend to all members another way in which to become a contributor. If you donate a minimum of $20.00 to go to our
next partially funded expedition you will become a contributor to the exchange for the year in which your donation is put to that end.
In so doing you will now have all the benefits due any contributor. Please indicate the amount of your donation on the order form.
This is how the catalog is arranged:
Contributor, Country
species seed, hand pollinated (hp) * 1 or controlled pollination (cp) * 2
species seed, collected wild (cw)
species seed, self fertile (op, self fertile) or open pollinated (op)
hybrid seed, hand pollinated (hp)
companion plant seed (Comp. – prefix)
* 1 all seed lots not marked 'selfed', 'cp', 'cw', 'op', or 'op, self fertile' are hand pollinated, hp will not be written.
* 2 cp = "Controlled Pollination" which differs from HP in that the stigma is physically covered after pollination. This covering is
meant to act as an extra protection against accidental contamination with unknown pollen.
Some contributors have supplied us with a list of "little known hybrids" they have used. This list will immediately follow the
contributor's seed lot numbers.
Every effort is made to avoid spelling errors; species are listed under the name supplied by the contributor and thus vary as to
classification system. Not all hybrid names are registered or found in other reference works.
Survey: Please respond to the catalog format and Internet access and selfed seed survey to be found on the reverse of the order form.
Please keep your catalog for future reference as orders are filled by lot number only.
A SPECIAL THANKS to all contributors who remain the foundation of the seed exchange. We are also grateful to webmasters Marc
Colombel of France, Hans Eiberg of Denmark, and Bob Weissman and Don Smart of the United States. The work by England's
Graham Lock with the hard copy catalog is also greatly appreciated. Werner Brack, a former seed exchange staff member, continues in
his labor at the exchange and is now proof reader of catalog entries, we gratefully acknowledge and applaud his long continuing
dedication to the SE. All are ARS members.

ARS POLLEN BANK
The ARS Pollen Bank exists to provide hybridizers with pollen from plants they do not or cannot grow themselves. Voluntary
contributions of pollen are sent to me anytime during the year, where they are recorded and kept dry and frozen. PLEASE DONATE!
If you would like collection and storage information, I have an instruction sheet available by e-mail (preferably), fax or snail mail.
Once a year, usually around January, I send out a list of pollen sent to me during the previous year, including donor information, to
anyone who: ordered pollen in the past, donated pollen, or requested a list during the past few years.
The current price for a capsule of pollen is $3.00, plus $1.00 per order for shipping. This money just barely pays for supplies, this is
not a profit-making venture for the Society.
I keep excess pollen from previous years, but have not listed it again. Much of this pollen is probably still good, as I have used 3 and 4
year old pollen with success. Exactly how long it can remain viable I have no way to know. If there is something you want and don't
see on the current list, ask I may have it. Also, if you have interesting plants, would like to share pollen but don't want to collect it, I
could put together a list of gardens where people could collect pollen themselves with your permission. For example, Hank
Schannen's large collection in NJ is open by appointment for this.
If you would like a list, contact me:
Ronald R. Rabideau, E-mail rarefind@earthlink.net ,
c/o Rare Find Nursery, phone (732)-833-0613
957 Patterson Rd., fax (732)-833-1965
Jackson,
NJ 08527.
I request of people purchasing pollen a wish list so donors have an idea what pollen folks want.
especially hardy ones.
