Time to
think
RHYL High students are helping
shake-off the stigma attached with
attending a school that was once in
special measures.
A new student-led revolution is
taking place with pupils having a
say in where the school is going
and how the school operates. This
sense of empowerment has been
witnessed with the establishment
of a Student Revolution Team and
School Council.
“Our kids now believe that Rhyl
High School is theirs,” said
Headteacher Claire Armitstead.
“We now have happy, fulfilled students,
ambitious about their education
and their future.”
The Student Council have been
involved in staff appointments,
with candidates including headteacher
Claire Armitstead quizzed
by its members.
They have also shared the
school’s experiences of Estyn
Inspections, including the team’s
final visit visit which saw the
school withdrawn from special
measures.

said: “Every one of us has said we feel closer
as a school and ‘we’re in it together’.
“As students we now feel that Rhyl High School is
a desired place to be. “Pupils now have a say in
where the school is going and how the school
operates and this results in a better working environment for all.
“Over the years, people may have questioned our ability to do
well, but in our hearts we KNOW they’re wrong.
“Rhyl High School and Rhyl itself have faced many difficulties in
the past few years, but now with inspiration and the desire to succeed,
the pupils and staff have come together to form a new working
partnership.
“Rhyl High School is the way forward……the way schools should
be!
“We would like to say a big thank you to all staff including our
inspirational new headteacher, Mrs Armitstead. We are lucky
enough to have excellent sports facilities and the opportunities like
taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. We now have many
opportunities that we never had before like being part of our
Student Revolution Team and the school feels more like a family to
us.

“Failure of a school? Underachieving?
“Well if you do, you’re wrong.
“That is our history, NOT our future.”

the community itself. It has recently
taken on its biggest challenge to
date and been handed responsibility
for capturing the new spirit of
Rhyl High School.
It has been placed in charge of
designing the school’s new uniform
to reflect its new found sense
of pride and freshness.
Maybe surprisingly, draft designs
have not taken their inspiration
from urban street clothing using
outlandish materials but instead
have proved very traditional -
Easing the way
THE move to secondary can be daunting
for some children but Rhyl High
School is helping to ease the journey
with older pupils taking new starters
under their wing.
The school’s Peer Mentoring programme
is there to help the pupils of
Rhyl High School feel safer, happier
and more confident.
The idea behind Peer Mentoring is to
allow everyone to enjoy high school
and not be scared by it.
Peer Mentors act as guides for new
starters and serve as a friendly face
when graduating from primary school.
