However Rhyl High School is helping inspire this group of individuals and put them on their own path to success. Its Re-engagement Scheme is turning around the lives of its pupils and winning students praise and plaudits. West Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme RH448923 v1 SH ■ Army backed personal development courses (above) and football skills courses with Rhyl Football Club (below) are some of out-of-classroom experiences offered to pupils and giving them the vital skills which you can’t pick up in a classroom. These include Deeside College, Coleg Llandrillo, Rhyl Football Club, and the Army. The effect has been startling with these pupils already identified by some as potentially tomorrow’s NEET’S (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) exceeding their teachers’ and peers’ expectations. The scheme is offered to all Year 11 pupils wishing to engage in vocational learning as an integrated art of their local curriculum. Its aim is to identify and enhance a young person’s potential, boost their confidence, build their self esteem, and maximise their potential, communication skills and personal development. One of best examples of a course being offered through the Reengagement Scheme is its Army backed personal development course. The course, delivered in partnership with North Wales Training and The Army Careers Service and using the British Army’s widely regarded set of values and standards,results in formally accredited nationally recognised qualifications. Learners take part in a range of training and learning opportunities such as map reading, fieldcraft, drill, first aid and command tasks. The course also includes a fun week away where they are given the chance to put what they have learned into practice. 6.7 % of land and one in six properties in Wales is at risk of flooding . In 2008,Welsh Assembly Government successfully bid for £30 million of European Convergence Funding for a Strategic Flood and Coastal Risk Management Project.To deliver the Project,WAG invited proposals for schemes and in January 2009, Denbighshire County Council was informed that their bid for the West Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme had been successful. The West Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme will reduce flood risk for up 2139 residential and 560 commercial premises currently at risk of flooding. In addition to the proposed engineering works, local residents can, by taking simple steps, reduce the extent of damage to their property.This project will engage the local community to enhance public resilience to flooding. Martin Wright Associates are currently working with the schools in Rhyl to raise awareness of flooding and its consequences.As part of this scheme a competition to design a logo was launched in July 2010.The winning entrant was from Rhyl High School.As well as all winning entrants receiving a prize,Rhyl High School was chosen as the site for a fully operational Weather Station, which will be used both for the scheme and educational purposes.We look forward to working with Rhyl High School and all other schools in Rhyl during this important flood risk management scheme. This scheme is being promoted by Denbighshire County Council, with the objective of significantly improving coastal defences and reducing the risk of flooding in West Rhyl. The Journal Wednesday, September 29, 2010 29 Come to school and you may win a holiday RHYL High School is using a reward system to motivate pupils and turn around its attendance records. Pupils are allocated a house when they arrive and can gain points for themselves through attendance, attainment and positive behaviour, contributing towards the house as a whole. The school hosts reward ceremonies throughout the year in which pupils and form classes are presented prizes including days out to theme parks and other attractions as part of its successful Rewards System. Pupils who attain 100 per cent attendance this year are being offered the chance to win a holiday for a family of six to the Isle of Wight. Not every pupil can achieve 100 per cent attendance so each and every pupil has an attendance target based on their own individual circumstances and they then reap rewards when they meet or exceed their target. The idea behind the Rewards System is to set children goals and challenges and are part of our reward system. And it appears to be working with attendance levels averaging a tremendous 95 per cent this year compared with figures in the early 80s in only a couple of years ago. Each year group has a Progress Manager who closely monitors attendance, punctuality and attainment and works with Rhyl High School’s Study Support Centre to ensure every child reaches their maximum potential throughout their school career. New strategies are due to be launched to further improve attendance with the support of our parents, the children. Examresults continue to improve E XAM results along with league tables are used as a measure of the success of a school. Denbighshire Voluntary Services Council In recent years Rhyl High School has been recording some of its best-ever results. Its Key Stage 3 results for 2010 were outstanding, reflecting of the hard work of students and staff. The percentage of students who achieved Level 5 or above at the end of Year 9 also showed a tremendous improvement with results now better than a number of similar schools across Wales. These improvements are reflected in Rhyl High School’s GCSE results which have shown sustained improvements over the last two years. This has inspired confidence among staff and school leaders, ensuring each individual follows the correct learning path Volunteering…. It’s a fun and rewarding way to spend some of your spare time and it opens your eyes to other things that are going on in your community. It can challenge you and you can make new friends. It will also be beneficial for your CV if you are applying for employment, college or university. You can register as a Millennium Volunteer if you are 16 to 25, or a Young Volunteer in Denbighshire if you are under 16, and get certificates and recognition for any volunteering you are doing now or in the future. This year Rhyl High School chalked up its best set of A Level results with students going on to achieve their ambitions and study in some of Britain’s top universities. What your club can do for you Following a successful start to Rhyl Football in the Communities Intermediate Labour Market (ILM) scheme, we are now looking for further Volunteers to gain access to other schemes and courses run by Rhyl FCITC. The Everton Foundation- Open to 16 to 18year olds who could be unemployed, have left school or are looking to go into Coaching or Teaching, For those who do not meet the required academic level, the Foundation will look to offer other courses with qualifications. Other studies include Planning and Delivering sports coaching, Safety and Ethics in sports coaching. Learners who do not hold Maths and English at GCSE grade C or above will be required to complete key skills in application of number and communication at level 1. Future Jobs Scheme - The Future Jobs Fund (FJF) was announced in 2009. By the end of March 2011 the existing bids will have funded over 100,000 jobs, mainly aimed at 18-24 year olds who have been out of work for six months and claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance. Strikers - The hard working staff of 'Strikers' help local young adults learn basic skills such as reading, Numeracy & Literacy that they have missed out on for various reasons. As well as this, the students gain some much needed motivation & confidence and interactive skills to help them get on with their lives. All of this is done through the huge language of football and each course lasts just 45 hours over three weeks. ILM Scheme - Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) is providing £120,000 funding. Lone parents, ex-offenders and people over 50 are among those taking part. Part of that training will involve viewing and developing the marketing strategies of Rhyl FC and Rhyl FC ITC, also giving coaching sessions and organising competitions for junior teams from Rhyl West and Bruton Park, two of the most disadvantaged communities in Wales. They will receive training to gain Level 1 coaching qualifications. The programme is aiming to give all those involved new qualifications and support more than half into permanent jobs.
