Licensing is a diffi cult business, and over the years it’s only gotten harder. It used to be that you had a single point of contact, but these days it’s more<br />
likely there’s a committee of different companies who are all involved in the production. One company is selected to be the “lead” when it comes to<br />
licensing, sometimes with different leads handling different global territories.<br />
What this means in general is that when you’re trying to license a series today, you have someone you’re working with, but they may not have the fi nal<br />
say. Instead, they may have to take your offer back to a group, all of whom must agree. Even if that group agrees, they may still have to get additional<br />
agreement from other parties involved in the production, or even the original director, producer, or author. For older series, the people involved in the<br />
anime may have left the company, it might not be known who the licensing lead was, or the licensing rights may have reverted to another party.<br />
Sometimes it seems as though it may never be possible to work though all of the things required to fi nalize a deal. However, in the last year, we’ve been<br />
able to fi nish deals on a number of programs that I’ve been working on for years!<br />
I’m excited we’ve been able to acquire The Rose of Versailles for release, with the fi rst box set coming in May. Created by Ryoko Ikeda, this long-awaited<br />
title has long been a fan favorite, and we’re super-exited to be able to bring it to you. Check out the article on page 4 to learn more about this seminal<br />
shojo show!<br />
Also coming this year is the Osamu Tezuka classic Princess Knight. This program, which has not been available since its syndication in the 1970s, will be<br />
presented with its original English audio.<br />
Finally, coming this fall, we’ll bring you the original Space Adventure Cobra TV series. Based on the best-selling manga by Buichi Terasawa, Cobra has<br />
been on many fans’ must-see list for years! One man and his android companion are all that stand between the human race and a ruthless criminal gang<br />
of space pirates.<br />
I’ve got many other exciting things in store for you, but I’ll hold on to them for the next catalog. In the meantime, I want to thank you as always for your<br />
