Communication Submitted by Trish Montgomery, RCA Secretary The RCA Communication Committee (staff – Cheryl Dukarski and resident members: Gina Iacone, Tom Lovasko, Carl Ludewig, Bob Novic, Nancy Tiernan, Hugh Vallely, Ed Watson) met January 9, 2013 to review communication strategies for Riverwood residents. Methods of providing information to residents include e-mail blasts regarding governance activities, including Highlights of RCA Board meetings, and general activities sponsored by the RCA (Riverwood Community Association). The Heron is published 9 times a year and, in addition to general information, includes information related to the Riverwood golf course. Periodic Orientation sessions are sponsored for new residents and renters to inform them of the amenities as well as major rules and policies related to the Riverwood community. A resident directory is published once yearly and community forums are held on an “as needed” basis. The Riverwood Web Site (Riverwoodflorida.org) is up-dated almost daily and is a comprehensive source of information related to governance, activity center weekly events, and special events and galas. The Committee reviewed the issue of signs being placed at various locations within Riverwood announcing private or neighborhood events. The covenants specifically prohibit any type of signs in the community (14.24.1). There was lengthy discussion about the possibility of changing the covenants and/or developing policies regarding signs. It was the general consensus of the Committee that it would be very difficult to develop guidelines that would be satisfactory and not result in problems. All neighborhoods have similar problems keeping their residents informed about neighborhood events. The Committee members suggested that individual neighborhoods encourage their residents to open and read their e-mails. Paper notices or phone calls can be made by individual neighborhood officers or social committee members to those residents who do not have access to e-mail. The RCA has similar problems with keeping residents informed. Please open and read e-mails sent from the RCA. If you are a part-time resident, please notify the office of your address changes so the Heron or other mailings will reach you. If you reside in Canada and do not receive the Heron, remember it is accessible (along with all other community information) on the Riverwood Web Site. The bottom line: Communication is a two-way street. Information can be provided, but it is the resident’s responsibility to access it. Activity Center Parking: For sold out events at the Activity Center keep in mind that we have limited parking on campus. To reduce congestion we ask those who can to carpool, drive your golf cart, or use the Willow Bend parking area. Please do not park on Riverwood Drive or on Stonebridge Lane. 2013/2014 Activity Center Calendar Reminder: Any resident wanting to suggest or schedule an event or entertainer for the Activity Center for next season 2013/2014 must submit your request in writing to the Activities Director by May 1st. Over 60 ROMP members attended the Welcome Back Social on January 13th. We had brief presentations regarding fund raisers and volunteer opportunities at the SunCoast Humane Society and the Animal Welfare League of Port Charlotte. ROMP members voted to give our yearly donation of $250 to each organization. ROMP members actively using the Dog Park were reminded that the $20 yearly fee is due (checks made out to the RCDD). Now that we have almost 100 families on the e-mail list, ROMP is looking for volunteers for a Social Committee. If you are interested in serving on the Social Committee, or if any resident has questions regarding the Dog Park, please contact Trish Montgomery (766-0452). Due to our weather, 2013 could be a smoky spring and summer in our area. Our wonderful sub-tropical winter weather is interrupted every 5-10 days by cold fronts invading from the north. The stumps were ground down and sod will be installed shortly to restore the area. Jamie Scudera, with Charlotte County, provided a list of trees to the Landscape Committee that could be used as replacements should that decision be made. Discussions continue to decide what options might be selected when the resources become available. A Revitalization Plan for the median will be developed that is in keeping with the high standards of Riverwood’s landscaping and submitted to the Finance Committee for consideration for the 2014 budget.
